You can't tell from the picture but inside dwells one of the most incredible surf and turf burritos ever. + It's HUGE!

Talk about a HIDDEN JEM. Right next to a gas station isn't usually someplace you find AWESOME food but this is one of those exceptions. Having set my Apple Maps before reading the description of the restaurant, my wife and I set our course on the way back from the San Diego Zoo. I didn't want to get home too late and the parking situation for the better restaurants near the zoo didn't look promising so we decided to go further away from San Diego to find a place on the way home near the 5 freeway. Cancun may not look like much but the food is pretty freaking amazing. My surf and turf burrito filled with generous amounts of shrimp and carne asada was incredible. Adding sour cream and guacamole just put it on another level. No burritos like this near my home. My wife's shrimp plate was also a winner. Lots of shrimp. My wife's only gripe was not enough rice and beans. Even the side of corn tortillas was moist and tasty. I'm not sure if they make their own tortillas but it seemed like it. Even the french fries are incredible. Nice and crispy but not dry. I thought I'd still be hungry after just the burrito but I had no idea what a monster it is. Even after eating 3/4 of it, the remainder was still heavy. The older lady working the register is so sweet. A little hard to understand since she has a thick accent but very nice and helpful. The cook was cool too. Very happy when I stopped before leaving to tell them the food was "delicioso". Don't let the gas station scare you away. The food is jammin'! I plan on stopping by again when I attend Comic-con next year.

    Tucked away... love that.

When we first moved to Carlsbad 10 years ago, I went on my search for Carnitas. My yelpers led me to Cancun. The picture of my Carnitas burrito comes up on the homepage of Yelp quite a bit, so today I thought let me go in order my burrito and show the beautiful family and friends that take care of me at Cancun. I walked in today and took my surprise. The entire family and friends were at a table eating lunch, so I showed them a picture on the front page of Yelp. They got almost emotional with pride, so today I ordered the same burrito I've gotten for 10 years and enjoyed it even more.

Been around for a while so not sure Id qualify it as a "hidden gem" despite being attached to a gas station but thats not a first. The service is great, plenty of space to eat inside or out, food hits the spot, legit hot sauces, decent prices... checks my boxes for a 5 star taco shop. Seems family owned? I think when you can say "no complaints", that means perfect IMO.

Cancun Mexican and Seafood is an authentic Mexican restaurant with great flavors and nice and fast customer service. The place has both indoor and outdoor seating, and the decor is vibrant. I placed a phone pickup order. When I went to the restaurant, my order was ready and well-packed. The restaurant was very clean and organized. I missed the restaurant from the last time I was in Carlsbad, so I ordered a few dishes: -Grilled fish taco -Adobada taco -Carnitas taco -Grilled fish burrito -Veggie burrito with jalapeno on the side -Filete pescado grilled plate - Carne asada plate The food was fresh, savory, and flavorful. The portions were huge. I really love this restaurant. Stop by to try their authentic food if you are nearby.

I'm not sure why people in the reviews call this a hidden gem. I Definitely cannot relate. The food was mediocre at best. The fish tacos were really unimpressive... there was more breading than fish as you can see in my photo and they really didn't put much of the fish taco sauce on it. Over all, the food kind of lacked flavor especially from a Mexican spot. I'm really not looking forward to the smell of my husbands flatulence later... it seems the quality and enjoyment of the food was not worth the consequences that come along with it.

Latest visit was terrible. Not sure if the ownership changed. The tacos were super expensive $5.50 each and they are super tiny. The tortilla is basically cheap mass produced low quality machine made processed food. There was a tiny piece of meat in the taco, barely taste anything. The soup was really bad, I found more than 1 piece of hair in there. Short and thick, it was absolutely disgusting. Avoid! Really terrible!

Looking for a good California burrito? This is the spot. Want a good surf and turf burrito, this is the spot. Ceviche was good too if you want seafood. It's on the side of the gas station. Honestly, I came bc I was staying at a nearby hotel and this was within walking and biking distance. I had fancier food the night before and it kind of sucked. I needed to eat something redeeming and this was it. Salsa red and green for the win. 4 tvs to watch and lots of seating inside. Everything was clean and they have free water.

Really great service. Fast and delicious . Glad we stopped here for burritos. My husband got the surf and turf burrito and he finished before I could even take a photo. Great flavors. Outdoor seating was covered.

    The salsa in question.

The food was not good. It's wired that even if you're eating in the restaurant, your food is still served in takeout containers.

I ordered the mahi mahi fish tacos and a house coffee. The coffee was actually pretty good! Cream and sugar were delivered separately to finish with your preference. As for the tacos, it was okay. The fish was a bit dry for my liking, cabbage could have been chopped with more finesse, and I wished they QC'd their limes a bit before putting them on the plate. Both were bone dry and I had to ask for more. Moreover, the cilantro lime rice was also a bit bland. It needed salt to lift the flavors in my opinion. There weren't even flecks of green if it was supposed to be cilantro? I tried boyfriend's veggie hash but was disappointed to find that it was almost all potatoes. Having said that, it was an extremely generous portion so he was filled up. While I didn't try it, our friend that had the chorizo hash also said it was okay so I'm guessing the ratio wasn't quite right. Anyways, ask for their chili sauce on the side, that's actually quite surprising. It had really good heat and was more like a chili crisp than a vinegary hot sauce. The plates that did score favorably at the table were the carne chilaquiles and the divorced eggs.

Luckily we were given the tip to try El Nopalito which is located just off the northbound Santa Fe Drive exit on the 5. You might want to look at google maps if you don't know the area which is in an older somewhat run down strip mall. Don't let that fool you though, appearances can be deceiving. Indise El Nopalito is clean and fairly large, probably seating around sixty. The kitchen can be viewed from where you order, which I like. We ordered nothing but tacos for starters to see what we liked, they have 21 types of tacos on the menu, so we chose Carnitas, Carne Asada, and El Pastor. Good choices all, freshly made, well seasoned, great toppings and big portions. The two of us were almost full just eating the three tacos. But no, we wanted more, so we ordered the Mole Oaxaca (Red Mole) which was excellent. A very complex taste with cinnamon and chile. Three tacos and the mole finished us. The service was friendly and prompt and I enjoyed sitting there because there was much to see. When we walked in it was a few minutes before noon. We were really surprised because there were about thirty high school students there mostly having sodas and tacos. Within ten minutes they all disappeared to go back to school. The restaurant was almost empty for a few minutes and then many Mexican Landscape Workers came for lunch. At one point there were over twenty people in line and the restaurant was full! This all in the space of fifteen minutes. They did not order tacos, but the daily specials, stews, soups, etc. They were friendly too and there was a great atmosphere. We were impressed by the taste of the food, the great selection, and all we saw. Ignore my other reviews for Mexican restaurants in the Encinitas/Leucadia area, this is our new favorite! We will try to be there about 11:40 again.
