My friend and I have been looking to try kickboxing so we stopped by the Monday 3PM kickboxing…read moreclass. Our instructor was Niko and there was another instructor who helped do demonstrations. We began the class with an alternating jumprope/punching warm up (about 10 minutes) and transitioned to punching with gloves in partners after. Because it was both my friend and my second time kickboxing ever, Niko helped hold the pads for us and went over the basics. Majority of the others in the class seemed pretty experienced and were able to jump into the more complex combos that Niko was providing. I appreciated how Niko was so helpful and encouraging, even though my friend and I had much less experience than those around us. In the short period of time, we were able to learn and practice jabs, crosses, hooks, knees, and kicks. After about 40 minutes of using the gloves, we ended with a quick 5 minute ab workout. Overall, such a solid workout, way to relieve stress and build confidence. Even through attending one day, you can tell everyone in the gym is pushing themselves and constantly seeking to improve, which makes it a great place to learn and be challenged. Quick note on parking: street parking (most of the spots nearby are 1 hour maximum, which works out since the class lasts for an hour)

For years I watched Orangetheory locations popping up all over LA and thought, "Cute. Whatever that…read moreis." I was perfectly happy with my barre, hot yoga and Peloton. Then this bitch hit menopause. And because apparently menopause needed a little razzle-dazzle, breast cancer joined the party. Suddenly my menopause doctor at UCLA, my medical oncologist AND my OB-GYN were all saying the same thing: Jennifer, you need to lift heavy weights. Excuse me?? I am NOT a gym girl. Gyms make me feel like everyone knows what they're doing except me. I don't want to wander around pretending I understand machinery. I need leadership. I need instructions. I need someone to lovingly bark at me and tell me what to pick up and when to put it down. Enter Orangetheory Koreatown. I texted, they invited me in, and dammit--I fell in love. The studio is super clean, easy to get to, there's FREE VALIDATED PARKING just steps away (an aphrodisiac for any Angeleno), great music and wonderful people. Tori made me feel immediately welcome, and Jasmin lovingly kicked my tush without once making me feel like the middle-aged woman who wandered into the wrong room. Turns out I don't hate lifting weights. I just needed someone to tell me what the hell to do. Literally just what the doctor ordered.

Gave OT a shot and it was a good experience. You have a partner and switch off on cardio/weight…read moretraining exercises. The reason I knocked off 2 stars was there are screens demonstrating the weight workout you're supposed to do but they are behind 2 cylinder blocks which makes it very difficult to see.

Olivia Scott's Piloxing class is what I semi-jokingly refer to as "Black Swan meets the Spartan…read moreWomen.". It is tough, exacting, it never gets easier, and I have found it irresistible for all those reasons, and because it works. I feel -and am - stronger, lighter, more flexible, mentally prepared for challenges, and calm enough to take it all on. You will sweat in this class. You will not stop moving. You will jump high, you will balance, you will move faster than you thought possible doing boxing exercises, you will hold yourself in plank pose on your elbows until you can't take it, and you will do some more. At the end of class, you will feel very accomplished, and you will be. The odd thing is, I am not, like Olivia, a former dancer, or someone for whom fitness dictates every aspect of their lives. I have never particularly liked exercise, although I have done a lot of yoga, which is a nice complement to Piloxing. But this is an exercise class that is actually transformational. It isn't a supplement or an add-on. It is the real deal, and will get results. Classes are very small, which is a big plus. There are no show-offs or room for obnoxious people - we just do our best to follow Olivia! She is a great motivator - she pushes people who need it, and encourages those who need a different approach. Also, she actually puts herself through the routine as well, which makes a big difference. Olivia is happy to modify for injuries, but you will still get a challenging workout, to say the least. I should also add that I have NEVER been sore from a Piloxing session, not even at the beginning. It is that good for me!
