I hate to give negative reviews but... We just stopped in for some margaritas on the patio overlooking Coper Creek Lake. They had a special on margs so we ordered those. What we got was a very syrupy, sweet and almost non alcoholic version of a margarita. If there was any tequila in there it was a drop or two. I asked for 'mas tequila' and it never came... We have been here before a few times and had a pretty good experience sitting at the bar, but something has changed since it reopened. We ordered some guacamole and it was very plain. Even the salsa lacked the flavors we were expecting. I hate to be so negative, but when there are so many Mexican Restaurant options in Des Moines - you have to do better. The patio was dirty and neglected with trash and debris blowing around and and patio furniture all need attention and cleaning. But hey the the company and view was great! Hopefully this restaurant gets back on track, we love a good Mexican restaurant but we will most likely not go back to this one again. read more

2nd time here on a Wednesday for lunch. The service was great, we were seated immediately and they greeted us w chips & salsa. Food is good and portion size is huge for the price! Their hot sauce is authentic & spicy. 2nd time ordering the nacho fajitas and they didn't skim out on the meat (chicken & steak)! Our kids shared the burrito and they both agreed that it was good, but nothing too special, they liked the nacho fajitas more. Best Mexican you can go to in Des Moines. Free Salsa and chips are something to look forward to. I recommend ordering the queso dip or the chori queso which is the Mexican sausage chopped in the cheese that goes well with the chips. My favorite beverage is their horchata. Their portion size is great and the quality taste of their food is amazing. I have never been disappointed here. They're doing something right. I found out on the south side they have a brother restaurant off of army post "Primos Tex Mex" as well. Overall great restaurant and great staff. read more

On a Sunday evening we stopped in before a show that we were headed to. We had a table of seven and although the interior is small and the parking is limited they were able to get us seated quickly. Chips and salsa were on the table right away. We also got our cheese sauce and fresh guacamole. I have to say that it was some of the best tasting guacamole Ive had. The portions are very big for the pricing. I got the Pleasant Hill Special (New) Four Little Chimichangas, Two Chicken And Two Beef, Topped With Cheese Sauce And Enchilada Sauce. Served With Tossed Salad The service was really good, he was really kind and able help with menu choices. I couldn't eat it all. I had to box up some to take home. They are worth a trip to this side of town if you dont normally come out this way. I want to come back with warmer weather and try out the patio. read more

Great chips and salsa but that's where it ends. Enchiladas were tasteless, dry non seasoned ground beef, flavorless red sauce. Others in our group complained of tasteless entrees and sparse ingredients like shrimp in the seafood burritos. Waiter never came to ask how we were. Had to ask for every little thing, more chips, salsa, etc. and that was as he walked by never even stopping as we called out to him. $10.50 for a watered down 28 oz. Margarita which I was not asked as to what sizes available. All-in-all, a very mediocre experience opposed to some of the glowing reviews we read from a year ago. Will not be back. read more

Ordered delivery from here through DoorDash. I was super hungry so I wanted a lot of food. Girlfriend told me to get the Chori Pollo, and being the type of boyfriend who does what he's told, and the fact that I LOVE the idea of piling meat on top of meat, I chose that. Couldn't be happier with that choice. Chicken was done perfectly and the chorizo was spot-on. As for the portion size, with the rice and beans which came with it, I almost couldn't eat it all. I'll definitely be back. Only downside, girlfriend ordered fajitas which were missing after the delivery dude had left. Not sure if that's on the restaurant or the Dasher. This is officially my favorite Mexican restaurant. Excellent food, large servings, perfectly spiced queso and I can't say enough about the chips!! Light, airy, perfectly crisp. This was a take out order so we had extra chips. First time ever I was able to reheat chips and have them taste as good as or better than fresh!! Love coming here to dine on the patio - such a nice escape on a beautiful day to pretend you're not in Iowa for a minute :) The food is fresh and we've always received great service each time we've visited with the extremely friendly staff. Service on the patio may be a little slower, but I think that is to be said of any restaurant with a patio that does not have a separate server station located right on the patio. I definitely recommend the mojarra frita here!! Cooked to perfection - not over fried and the perfect size of fish s selected. We've enjoyed just about everything we've tried on the menu here, but I keep coming back to the mojarra because it's their best dish!! honestly probably the worst food I've had in my life and money down the drain. literally gave me shredded lettuce 2 cucumber slices, and an orange slice and called it a salad.... I also have a severe dairy allergy and when my "salad" was brought out it had cheese all over it after asking for no cheese when I ordered, when they took it back to "remake" it and when it comes back to me it looked like they just picked off the cheese cause there was still cheese in it even when I made them aware of my severe allergy my food was still cross contaminated. my husband got tacos and the meat in the steak tacos wasn't cooked whatsoever, and that was a replacement for the birra tacos that also wasn't cooked properly and he couldn't even Finnish. the rice was so hard he couldn't even eat it because it was overcooked. it's honestly the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant and the worst food we have had in our lives. read more

We used to go here weekly, for great Mexican fare. The food is very very good, but the service has really sucked the last 4 or 5 times, so we stopped going. The greasy quesadilla Veracruz is PERFECT for someone who likes to separate their food groups, shrimp on one side, mushrooms on the other. Ordered corn tortillas with carne asada...got flour for the greasy fried carne asada. Waitress was polite and caught the tortillas, but too late. No drink refresh for the diet coke, spending her time cleaning... We eat a LOT of Mexican food, this was a disappointment. read more

Stopped at La Feria towards the end of lunch time today. Greeted and seated immediately. There were perhaps as dozen other tables seated. The half of the restaurant we were in was about half full. My husband noted that some of the decorations on the walls were from the Italian (?) restaurant that used to be here. We were greeted by the waiter, given chips and salsa, and our drink order was taken. Drinks arrived shortly thereafter. My husband and I both got lime house margs on the rocks. They arrived in water goblets, not the traditional margarita glasses. This had nothing to do with how they were, just an observation. They tasted slightly better than normal, margarita-mix-from-the-bottle mix. We asked for cheese dip, it arrived and then we placed our entree orders. The cheese dip was pretty usual but tasty. The chips didn't taste like they came from a bag, fresher and crisper than bagged chips. The salsa was more runny than it was thick, but had a good, fresh flavor. It wasn't overpowered with cilantro, which I hate. Our entrees arrived quickly. My husband got the #1, which was two enchiladas (he got beef), a taco (beef), and refried beans (he could have chosen rice instead). He said his food was bland, but edible. I got the steak tacos (softshell) covered in cheese sauce lunch special. The order came with two, along with sides of rice and beans. The steak was wonderfully seared and I thought it had good flavor. We both noted that all the taco and enchilada shells seemed to be homemade, which was nice. My rice was fluffy, flavorful, and well cooked. I thought the beans were pretty typical. The service was quick, but the food was pretty typical. Nothing special except for the homemade shells. Not a bad meal, we just weren't wowed by anything unusual or super good. $27 for two lunches and margaritas. read more

Great spot for some very solid Mexican food. Was in the area due to a basketball tourney. Good chips and salsa, very good sized cervesas (beers) and our chori-pollo was very tasty. The restaurant (a basic but nice type) was busy despite the later-ish hour but we got a table right away. Chips and salsa were delivered immediately upon seating. I made reservations for 25 at La Feria for a Bridal Shower last weekend. They had everything set up in the party room and waiting when I arrived. We ended up taking over several other tables for gifts, etc and were there for 3 hours. The service was fantastic, the food and drinks were wonderful, and the whole experience was impressive. If you visit La Feria I highly recommend the guacamole. It comes chunky in a mortar with a pestle, so you can smash it more if you want. I didn't, I loved the chunkiness of it. It had great flavor with plenty of garlic, onions, and jalapenos. I had three street tacos, two steak, one shrimp. Nothing spectacular, but not bad either. My dinning partners had burritos and a shrimp quesadilla. Both looked good, but not worth a revisit. I've had and seen very similar dishes at any so-so Mexican restaurant. What will get me back here is the great patio on the lake, guacamole, and the Margaritas and the reason I gave them 3 stars and not 1. Great to start a night out or meet friends for a drink. Wanted a girls night out for taco Tuesday and was sadly disappointed. The service was not good what do ever. It almost seemed as if they all were a little sad/mad. We were hoping for some good authentic tacos and again we were sadly disappointed. The tacos came with only flour tortillas and little to now meat. Every time we asked for a service such as extra cilantro, water or more salsa we were sent with a attitude and the feeling of being unwanted. Service was also quite slow yet was not very busy. I'm originally from El Paso Texas, so I don't like to rate Mexican restaurants in Des Moines. It's just not fair to them, I'm very biased. I'm influenced by New Mexico , Tex-Mex and actual Mexican cuisines. I've gone to almost all of the Mexican restaurants in this wonderful city and it just doesn't end well. This place is one of the better ones, but in all honesty it would go out of business if it was in southwest Texas. It would have to change a lot of ingredients for it to survive. I went here with a group of friends. Ok, first thing. The salsa they give you with chips. I once had Hispanic co-workers who told me that using tomato sauce in a Mexican dish is a big NO NO! So, I have developed a finely tuned palate for distinguishing this. Guess what, their salsa is FRESH INGREDIENTS, NO CHEATING WITH TOMATO SAUCE! YAY!!!!! Extensive menu. I ordered Enchiladas Verde, and it was delicious! A little heavy on the cilantro as the cilantro taste was obvious, but it was still delicious! I ordered one of their specialty margaritas, a Peach Margarita (I wasn't driving!). Wow, it was thick and great! It was thick enough to allow me to nurse it through the meal and didn't need to waste money on another drink! One of my friends shamelessly ordered a HUGE margarita, holy cow, I'm glad I didn't order that one. I was riding with friends, so I didn't notice whether or not an RV could park there. For my first 36 visits, I would have given La Feria four stars based on good, flavorful food at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, I had something wrong with my order on the 37th visit and was treated so rudely and horribly, I will never go back. I let the waiter know about a mistake with my order--wasn't rude, wasn't mad, wasn't asking for my food to be comped--and he treated me like I was lying. They double charged me for a combo that they didn't even give me all the food that came in one single combo and had an issue about refunding money they mistakenly charged me.
