Pretty decent Mexican food in Altoona. The space is good after a nice remodel but it is very loud in there. There was a birthday party and a TV playing loud music while we dined. The service is good and we had a quick turn around from ordering, but we went at an off hour. I had the steak, chicken, shrimp quesadilla with rice. It was good and the portions are enormous.

Hands down the very best Mexican food Iowa has to offer. The chips are crispy, warm, and fresh. The cheese dip is flavorful and not watered down. The food is well prepared and I appreciate that it seems to take a few more minutes than the typical fast food speed at other similar restaurants. The service is attentive and feels genuine. Good people. Great food.

**Casa Agave - Good food, mixed results** The dining areas offer vast open rooms with lots of light and plenty of space for big parties. Our experience at Casa Agave was a bit of a mixed bag. The service was excellent, and our host was friendly and attentive. The Texas fajitas were cooked perfectly and the shrimp was delicious. The birria tacos were a delicious surprise. The pitcher of margaritas was refreshing, though very light on the alcohol. They were really pushing their $16 margaritas... Unfortunately, the chips were a disappointment - some were fresh and crispy, while others were stale. The salsa was also very mild, lacking in flavor. Overall, the food was good, but not exceptional. Would return for the fajitas and tacos, but would probably notify the staff about the stale chips next time.

The best Mexican place in Altoona - new location and the staff is incredibly friendly and sweet. Our service is amazing, and we judge highly the salsa and chips. It is incredibly and their queso speaks for itself. The food is delicious and we've been back many times, it's lovely the amount of space they have for seating and that it is spread out, allowing me to be able to hear my date and the large windows make for great people watching. I highly recommend everyone tries out Casa Agave!!!

This place has been open more than a month. The food is good, but the service is still problematic. My wife arrived before I did today. She asked for 2 waters. She was brought 1 glass of water and 2 straws. She asked someone else for another water. Only after I showed up and she asked again did they bring out another water. Then we ordered. She ordered a cheese enchilada and a side of rice. I ordered my "usual," which is a vegetable fajita with chicken added (I like the vegetables). Someone had to come out and confirm or clarify my order. I've probably ordered this dish at this restaurant 3 of the last 4 Friday nights. I repeated exactly the same order I gave the waiter and that seemed to be good enough. Then the food came out, and we had absolutely no complaints about the taste, texture, or presentation. However, once we were done we were in for a wait. After waiting more than 15 minutes after the dishes were cleared, we still had no bill and the waiter had not come back to the table. While we were waiting, I kept watching the other waiters going back and forth to the tables they were working. I also noticed some distinctive glasses on the bar from a couple that paid and left at least half an hour earlier. I couldn't help noticing that another couple at the table next to us was also having an issue. One of their entrees was brought to the table, but the other was not. Enough time passed that the person who didn't receive his food decided to cancel his order. At that point, we decided to go to the cash register to pay. The person working the cash register could not find our bill in the system until our waiter eventually came over to help find it. We have eaten here at least half a dozen times (probably more than that) because my wife loves the food. Every time we've eaten here, the food has been delicious but there has been some kind of issue with the service. Today she told me we don't have to go back.

Service was top notch, food fast & fresh, drinks = tipsy. First time but definitely not the last. I know there are a lot of Mexican options and a lot are the "same" but sometimes "one" just stands out.

Textured soy protein. Fake ground beef.

Please be advised that they use soy protein in their "ground beef." TVP is reconstituted soy protein that you add water to. TVP looks like extremely fine ground beef, much too fine to be a real meat product. I was wondering why my beef taco was leaking water and enchilada had no flavor. I'm highly allergic to soy & this almost landed me in the hospital with extreme digestive issues. Apparently this TVP is common in restaurants here. It's the texture of Alpo canned dog food. Hope this saves someone a lot of grief.

They are related, but Fiesta in Pleasant Hill is the shunned and estranged disappointment cousin of Fiesta North Liberty. The service was slow. The food didn't have much depth of flavor. A chicken quesadilla for the four year old, grandpa got pork tacos, grandma got a steak burrito, my husband got birria Ramen, and I got seafood enchiladas. We also got 2 margaritas to go. And a few dips and salsas. The portions were huge especially the Ramen. Everyone liked what they ordered. The guacamole was great too. My seafood enchiladas had a great creamy sauce and the crab and shrimp were well cooked. The margaritas were very strong! The only thing we did not like was the avocado salsa, and the chips tasted a little stale. It was very watery and bland.

I hate to give negative reviews but…read more.. We just stopped in for some margaritas on the patio overlooking Coper Creek Lake. They had a special on margs so we ordered those. What we got was a very syrupy, sweet and almost non alcoholic version of a margarita. If there was any tequila in there it was a drop or two. I asked for 'mas tequila' and it never came... We have been here before a few times and had a pretty good experience sitting at the bar, but something has changed since it reopened. We ordered some guacamole and it was very plain. Even the salsa lacked the flavors we were expecting. I hate to be so negative, but when there are so many Mexican Restaurant options in Des Moines - you have to do better. The patio was dirty and neglected with trash and debris blowing around and and patio furniture all need attention and cleaning. But hey the the company and view was great! Hopefully this restaurant gets back on track, we love a good Mexican restaurant but we will most likely not go back to this one again.

So, we ventured down the bike trail from Ankeny to Bondurant to try a restaurant we hadn't previously visited. It's a cute little spot in a strip mall off Highway 330, but we arrived on bikes via the back streets. We had the choice of the patio, the main seating area, or the bar. We chose the bar so we could watch all the activity. The place was about half full, but it was eerily quiet, so we jokingly asked where the mariachi band was. The hostess eventually turned on some music, but we could barely hear it, which left us feeling a little less festive. The service was a bit slow, even though they weren't very busy--especially considering what day it was. We actually witnessed some ladies leave after being ignored for too long. I'm not sure what was going on there. But one friendly waiter finally brought us a first round of margaritas ($7.59 on special) and some chips and salsa (complimentary). The margaritas were big and delicious! The chips were fresh, and the salsa--although bland, in my opinion--was fresh and good enough (I added some El Yucateco to spice mine up!). It took quite a while to get our order in, and I originally wanted the ceviche, but was sadly told they didn't have it. So I ordered the Chicken Street Tacos ($14.90), which arrived with just a few small onion slices and no cilantro. :( Kim opted for the Chicken Quesadilla appetizer ($10.59). Once the food arrived, we quickly understood why the ratings aren't all five stars. The quesadilla was super plain, and the chicken in both dishes lacked flavor and wasn't very tender. I had a side of pinto beans that were good but also lacked seasoning. The best things on my plate were the tortillas and the fried jalapeño. We opted for two more margaritas, and Kim switched it up to a Margarona ($12.99)! Like I said, the drinks were good, and our waiter warmed up a bit, adding a touch of personality to the evening. We left feeling full, yet a bit disappointed that we didn't discover the kind of Mexican food gem that would make it worth the travel in the future. It was passable, but nothing I'd make a special trip for.
