The recently renovated the space and it now feels so much better! There are much more spaces to do conditioning work and to do free weights too. They have better machines compared to the Loop LA Fitness, and the space feels bigger, too. For the price, the free 2 hour parking, and chill staff, I'd recommend this as a solid low price gym! The gym itself is fine, standard LA Fitness. The bathroom (men's at least) has a layout quirk that makes parts of it smell so strongly of urine and BO that it's hard to breathe. There's the main area with lockers, and then the bathrooms, showers, and saunas are behind another door. I think it's because of the door and therefore the bathrooms being in an enclosed space, but Jesus Christ the stench is so strong. I'm not expecting it to smell like flowers but I try to not use the bathroom here if possible. I can tell they try and clean it because sometimes smell of pee and sweat combines with a really strong chemical cleaner smell. Which is slightly better I guess... read more

This place SUCKS ever since it was bought by LA FITNESS. Specifically, the hours are ridiculous...they close at 9 pm on Friday!?! WTF??? When it was XSport it was open 24/7 at least stay open until 11pm. They close even earlier on the weekends, at 7pm. This place is no longer worth the monthly fee....i'm over them. read more

This gym would be a great gym if the facilities worked, the staff wasn't rude, and you could show up and get a workout in the posted hours that the gym is open. But everything is broken, especially the pool/hot tub. And the staff is rude and goes as far as setting clocks ahead and closing parts of the gym early on certain nights so they can leave early. This is true at many locations and you often have to call 5 to 6 LA Fitness locations to find a working pool or hot tub. Good luck finding both. I originally signed up for an Xsport membership because they were 24/7 and LA Fitness has notoriously horrible hours. This is made worse at this location because they have a British Swim School that comes in from 4pm - 8pm most days which is the ideal workout time. On Sundays it's doubly bad because the gym has a ridiculous closing time of 8:00 p.m. on weekends. I'm in a weird situation where it's life or death that I recover liver health and I need to do tons of aerobic exercise but have had several knee surgeries and so I swim. The gym is regularly choas. I've been assaulted, witnessed assaults, been threatened by crazy members, the hot tub and pool have been broken for ~6 months of my first year membership at this and most other locations. Their locker room showers didn't have hot water for the first nine months. The hot tub regularly has dirt floating on top because no one showers. They let creepy men wear their street underwear into the pool and hot tub without showering constantly. I can't convince my girlfriend to come to the pool anymore because she's so grossed out by the men doing this. The pool water is cloudy and dark. They've even started setting the clocks forward so that they can close the pool more than 30 minutes before the posted closing time. This happened a few times last fall and I spoke with the GM who said it wasn't supposed to be that way and it stopped happening. Zero rules that would matter to the quality of the gym experience are enforced but tonight the pool closes at 9:20pm and we pretend it's 9:30pm by setting clocks ahead. Oh, and it's not every night it's just when the staff decides to power trip. Ok, thanks LA Fitness. Most nights (and I swim until close almost every night during the week) someone comes in about 5 minutes before close and lets everyone know they need to get out and I throw on my clothes and walk out the door by closing time. I often leave and the locker rooms are still packed with folks from the regular gym because they do not clear that out until exactly closing time. I've now stayed to watch and most nights that group leaves 10 to 15 minutes after closing time. The sauna rats are the worst. It would be nice if the facilities worked and I could rely on the posted hours so that I could plan my day. I signed up for a gym location that I could walk to and they've closed that gym and so I have to drive to this gym which means I have to work around my partner's schedule because we share a car and they take it for work. Because this is not a 24-hour gym like I signed up for it would be great if it was open until the stated closing time. Hold people accountable if they are leaving after closing time but don't be closing facilities 40 minutes before closing time and setting your clocks 10 minutes ahead to gaslight people. All this gym needs to do to be four stars (five stars would be to be open until 1am nightly) is to have working facilities and stick to their stated hours. read more

Love working out here cause of the vast amount of machines they have! The workout area is always clean and staff is helpful and courteous. Bathrooms sometimes needs more frequent cleaning but I can't blame this on them and I put it on some members who don't clean after themselves. I do see staff cleaning the bathrooms but I just see some members who tend to not care about how they clean after themselves! Overall I recommend this location. I had a truly disappointing experience at the LA Fitness on Roosevelt and Canal in Chicago, mainly due to the extremely unprofessional and rude behavior of the manager, Adrian. My friend Bryan and I came in today with valid guest passes and a real intention to try the gym before signing up. Instead of being greeted or given any kind of helpful direction, Adrian approached us while on the phone and bluntly asked, "You guys signing up?" in a cold, dismissive tone. I explained that we had guest passes and were very interested in joining after checking out the facility. His response? "If you're not joining, it's going to be $20 for day passes." Still no welcome, no explanation, no offer to show us around -- nothing but attitude. We were told the only option was to wait 15-30 minutes to speak with someone, even though Adrian and another employee were clearly not busy and spent their time staring at us from behind the desk or awkwardly walking around without ever offering assistance. After standing around being ignored, we eventually decided to just pay for the day passes. My friend approached the desk, and Adrian seemed annoyed and told us again to "keep waiting." When we finally paid, Adrian looked over and asked the desk staff if we were paying, got a nod, and didn't say another word. To make matters worse, when I asked for his full name so I could understand who I was dealing with and follow up with someone who might actually help, he told me he "doesn't give his last name to anyone." I wasn't being confrontational -- I just wanted to understand why someone in his position was being so rude and unhelpful. His refusal to even give his last name further reflects his lack of professionalism and accountability. The gym itself might be nice, but the management is a complete deal-breaker. It's an LA Fitness so - of course - the hours are ridiculously limited (some nights the gym is closed at 8pm) and the pool is now broken. Good thing the pool at the other nearby location...is also broken. And, even when the pool and hot tub (which they charge extra to use) are working they're generally pretty dirty. The hot tub looks like it gets cleaned never. You'll see the same bandaids and other debris in the pool for days. You have guys getting in without showering and in their underwear and not a swimsuit. Showers are nicer than the nearby XSport and the clientele isn't as shady but the club is still making no effort at facilities and that's probably why they're always broken. read more

I think someone has to say it.. This gym is overcrowded and poorly maintained. Half of the treadmills and weight machines are out of order for weeks without repair. Dumbbells are rarely re-racked, and benches are falling apart. There is little to no maintenance. Simply cleaning supplies like paper towels and cleaning wipes, once provided, are now being removed, leaving no way to sanitize equipment. To top it off, there was a security incident that occurred when a kid was escorted out by 9 police officers for bringing a gun. Overall, this gym lacks proper upkeep, safety, and cleanliness. read more

This gym was a 20 minute walk from the train station. I decided to come to this gym when I had a 3hr layover, after calling 3 separate times to clarify on the 3 free day passes I walked all the way there just to be told I had to pay $20 for a day passes when I could've just went to PF for a $10 day pass. I tried to speak to a manager and was obliviously being ignored for 15 minutes. I paid the $20 just to only get in a 20 minute workout because the first 30 was spent wasting my time waiting for the manager. After that I was given the most beat up yoga mat I've ever seen even though (they have SUCH better amenities) wasted $20 and my time. read more

LA Fitness has been a great gym for what I need -- easily available squat racks, validated parking, and bikes with sometimes interesting TV shows on. It's generally clean, not too crowded but not completely empty either. There are plenty of machines to work out on which are usually self-explanatory. I get a good deal through my insurance (lower monthly rate and significantly lower initiation fee) so it made sense for me. The garage says validation is good through 1.5 hours but if you validate at the gym it's actually 2 hours to give you more time to finish your workout. They do have a vending machine which sells protein drinks but that's been out of service more often than it's been functional. They usually blast current and older pop music, if that's not your thing I recommend noise cancelling earphones. read more

Coming back a year later with less stars. Definitely the worst LA fitness in the city. This gym has so many problems starting with the cleanliness. They have cleaning staff here constantly cleaning and doing a great job but This place is still disgusting. They over work the cleaning staff and with the volume of members it's impossible to upkeep the facility. Speaking of which the members are some of the dirtiest people you will interact with, leaving trash everywhere, not putting weights back properly. People with no emotional intelligence blasting music or having loud phone calls in locker room or sauna as if it's only them there. The staff is generally friendly but it seems like most the male staff are more interested fraternizing with females. The hot tub, pool, and sauna is persistently disgusting and closed. And since LA fitness bought out xsport, they closed the state street location due to not being able to come to a lease agreement. Guess where all those members went?? Ur right, this location... so good luck actually finding equipment to work with during rush hour. Even for the price it's a huge disappointment. Management couldn't care less seems like so might be time to look for membership elsewhere. read more

Apparently it's good business to screw prospective members out of annual fees after cancelation. I was tentatively relocating and signed up. Paid for two months in advance and was told as long as I canceled prior to the annual being taken out I wouldn't be charged more. Canceled 4 days prior, they took the money and said I should have cancelled 5 days prior. $140 for 2 months. Planet Fitness may not have the equipment but they've never stolen from me. read more

It's fine. Three squat racks. Plenty of free weights and machines. The free weight area is always chaos, weights are never in order/ in the correct spot and frequently left around the gym. As of June 2021 masks are optional but the sauna is still closed citing COVID concerns. The location is convenient if you're walking but trickier by car. Roosevelt and Taylor is usually busy and during peak hours that traffic extend west to the Roosevelt entrance. Occasionally you'll have a cop car parked right before that entrance making things worse. All in all, it's...fine. An affordable chain gym with some amenities. read more

I went to this gym w so much excitement to get back into my fitness journey, after falling off due to unforeseen trauma. I walked in on 3/15/2025 and sat w who I think was a manager, short, stocky, Latino guy who initially seemed pleasant. Gym membership all taken care of but now he wants me to meet w a trainer. At this time, that's not what I want to do, I politely declined. He instead called over one of the trainer, tall guy w a big chest and they began to tag team and bully me to sign up to work w a trainer. Are yall this pressed for money that you harass new members. I told them that I prefer the classes and I'm just getting started. This guy began to tell me that that's the reason I fell off. Falling off but getting back up is always ok and as a "trainer" you should know that. I expressed to them that I began to feel harassed and ask if I was done w the membership setup. I was there that day to do a class and after that interaction, I was completely thrown off and now discouraged from getting back healthy. read more

I joined LA Fitness last spring and mostly had been going to the one on MLK drive (which is great), but for the last month I've been taking classes at this location on Canal because the times work with my schedule. I am loving this location. The classes are great. The instructors are motivating and have great energy, especially Shera, and the workouts are tough, but seem to go by quickly. The gym itself is good. The equipment is usually working and there are enough machines. The pool is clean and nice, the showers and floors are constantly getting cleaned, there's a sauna, hot tub, and the locker room is fine. For this price point, this gym is great. Parking is free with validation too. I wish they had towel service though! Also more yoga mats are needed in the class studio. read more

What a weird weird gym. A million pieces of cardio equipment (stairclimbers, treadmills, bikes, ellipticals - you name it) but only one set of free weights in each weight (all of which were conspicuously missing) when I visited. Lots and lots of machines, though; more than any I have seen at LA Fitness. Like any other LAF's, the squat racks and smith machines were used as a hanging rack for people's coats/bags/snacks. I've come to expect that no one monitors anyone's behavior. The front desk attendants looked annoyed when they had to hold up the scanner at check in. Dearheart, if it's that troublesome, JUST LEAVE IT ON THE COUNTER. My monthly membership fees are paying your salary, so be a little nice or just be efficient - don't be annoyed. This really does have an eclectic group of patrons - everything from bros just "standing", cardio bunnies, chicks who choose to be trained by their boyfriends (this is always my personal favorite) and actual people who are there to work. Unfortunately, the later was severely outweighed by everyone else. This isn't a signature club, so no towels. Funny thing, I didn't see any of the standard foamy dispensers with paper towels either. My favorite part about this gym is that I get to walk through one of the best Whole Foods in the city after a work out. Parking is super easy and free! read more

I joined the LA Fitness in the West Loop area of Chicago. I only joined because they had a hot tub that helps with my medical condition. I was told that it would be working in about a week but It never worked for months. It still may be out of service. So I decided to try the LA Fitness in Brownsville on 34th and King Drive. I've been to their hot tub a few times and like the atmosphere in the entire facility. I also don't have to worry about parking over the 2 hour limit like the one off of Roosevelt Rd. Since I signed up at the Roosevelt location, I'll rate that facility. There were other issues but I don't want to write a book. read more

The only perk is that it's $40 a month and can go to any LA fitness but....you get what you pay for. The group fitness class times are terrible and so is the audio system for them. The gym equipment is fine for treadmills & weights. Do yourself a favor and don't return the new member "free personal training session" calls. They will fat shame you, guilt you, and harass you for 45 minutes into joining a over priced personal training program because they get commission. read more

I'm writing this review as a MAJOR shout-out to the utterly unhelpful and completely incompetent "Manager on Duty", Isaac, who was on duty during the last shift of June 24, 2018 (I was at the gym between 6pm to 7:30pm on this day). Isaac's natural proclivity towards abysmal customer service ensured that my most recent, and probably last, visit to the South Loop LA Fitness location was just... unforgettable. Zero stars for Isaac and one star for the surprising outcome ("surprising" because Isaac was excellent at dashing any hopes that I had for a positive outcome). I've been a member at this location for almost a year. Today's visit was like any other. That is, until about the last 15 minutes or so. To start, I was greeted with a barely audible and lukewarm welcome, which is the normal custom of the front desk staff. I then worked out, spending about half of this time searching for and re-racking weights that were abandoned by other patrons. So, a normal day at this location. "Things" really hit the fan when I attempted to retrieve my personal belongings (car keys, cell phone, and wallet) from the small lockers, which are available for any patron to use and that are located less than 10 feet away from the front desk. It wouldn't open and so I asked the front desk if they could use the spare key. Following is the conversation that then took place: Me: "Hi! My locker won't open. Do you have a key?" Front Desk Girl, Lucy: "Um... didn't you see the signs? None of the lockers work." Me: "I did see that there were some signs taped to individual lockers, but there was no sign taped to the locker I used so I assumed that the locker that I used was fine." Lucy: "Well, they're all broken and we don't have a back-up key. So, there is nothing that we can do." Me: "You don't have a back-up key...? So, what do you suggest?" Lucy: "You can keep trying to open it. There is literally nothing else we can do." After spending another few frustrating minutes trying to open the locker, I then approach Lucy at the front desk again and and ask for another suggestion. Once more, I am told "nothing can be done". So, I decide to offer some creative suggestions, including: 1) "Let's make a call to corporate"; response: "They're closed." 2) "You need to call a lock smith"; response: "I'm not authorized to do that." I'm clearly irritated, and so Lucy suggests that I speak to Isaac, the "Manager" on Duty. I was surprised by this suggestion because, by this point, I was told repeatedly nothing could be done and yet there was a manager available for me to speak to! I was then also surprised to see that Isaac was sitting within earshot. I walk over to Isaac, debrief him, and this was his response: "Didn't you see the signs? We tried to put the signs everywhere so people wouldn't use the lockers. Something very serious happened and that's why the lockers aren't available. We don't have a back-up key so there is nothing that we can do. Did you enter your combination correctly? Did you set your 3 digit code, lock it, then scramble it?" At this point, I get defensive because at no point does Isaac apologize for the inconvenience and/or acknowledge that the signs were clearly ineffective. Also, instead, he tries to deflect the issue onto me by blaming user-error on my part. As I'm calling Isaac out on all of this, I am following him as he walks over to the front desk. He then tells me that maybe there is a key and that I can walk about 5 blocks to the nearest Home Depot to have it copied. I am in disbelief by his suggestion for so many reasons, which includes the following thoughts: 1) So, apparently, there is a key, after all. 2) The manager is suggesting that I, the customer, walk to the nearest Home Depot to get a key copied. 3) My wallet is locked in the locker so how would I even pay for this key copy? I tell him that he needs to go get the key copied or send 1 of his 2 front staff to do so. He tells me he needs to stay in the building until 8pm and he can't send anyone. He also patronizingly tells me, "We're all a team here" and that he needs to check to see if Home Depot is even still open. Then he pulls out the "key" which is broken and obviously not able to be copied. Again, I tell him he needs to call a lock smith. As all of this is going on, I see Lucy in the corner of my eye - trying to open the lockers with... a key! I can tell that Isaac is getting a brain cramp because he's trying so hard to think of an obvious solution like calling a lock smith or checking for a spare key, and so I walk away from him to see if Lucy can save the day. And guess what? Lucy does save the day. She opens the locker after trying one of the keys that she somehow found. It took her about five tries and she spends this time offering an almost apology for the inconvenience and lack of empathy from her manager, which helped calm me down a little bit, and she's able to open the locker. My favorite Chicago LA Fitness location. It's inside of a plaza. Need an outfit? Forgot your running shoes? Nordstrom Rack is right across the street! Hungry? You can pick up dinner from Whole Foods on your way out! Located on the bottom level, garage parking with validation. Limited street parking as well. Inside, this location is clean, with newer amenities. Plenty of cardio machines, and separate spin studio, open to members to use at their own pace when class is not in session. Group exercise studio as well. Plenty of mats for stretching. Friendly staff. Lisa is especially helpful. I look forward to visiting again next trip! read more
