My only qualification to change the rating to 4 stars is that their billing/finance/etc. processing is a nightmare. They charge too much and then you must go back and straighten out the books now and then, that is no fun with such a good place. read more

Surprised I never finalized my review for this club. I found this club during the end of the pandemic and it was a much welcoming space. I have the opportunity to take tennis and no time lessons at this facility. As part of that package I got to try out the gym for the day in which I had lessons on. The tennis program is really phenomenal so many great tennis pros, plus a racket club right on-site. I like that they have indoor and outdoor courts. The indoor courts are very bright and no complaints at all. For the rest of the facilities I was able to try a dance fitness class and then also a barre class. Both instructors were top tier. It is really easy to check out all the different classes that they have to offer as they have a really good application system for scheduling. I really enjoyed that in addition to workout spaces, strength based conditioning spaces, boxing spaces, yoga room, etc ... There is a social aspect to the club. They have a full bar and limited type kitchen but it's a really nice area just to even work or relax if you just want to be around people but don't necessarily want to be at an outside function. The pools were really nice here they have indoor pool and a rooftop outdoor pool. I will say that sometimes you got a little chaotic during family swim time. I was able to enjoy the hot tub however I wish they would have required parents not to let their kids splash around in the hot tub at times. In addition to all the other things they have at this facility they have a full house salon and one of my favorite things to do after working out was to hit the sauna and the steamroom. I really enjoy this athletic club and if it was more in my price range I would join. I totally see how you could take good advantage of all the benefits that it has to offer to include an attached hotel. Members get parking in the garage so parking is not an issue. read more

I came here as a guest and was blown away. This gym is gorgeous! Felt like a hotel with all the amenities in the world. Comparable to Equinox and superior to Lifetime. This gym is 3 stories with indoor tennis courts, spa, indoor and outdoor pools/hot tubs, multiple workout studios for pilates, yoga, and group classes, multiple free weight areas, a restaurant, bar, cafe, and more. Not only was this gym stunning, it was clean. It didn't smell like a sweat room. There were no dust balls. I checked out the free weights on the third floor. My only feedback is how busy the gym was. It was hard to find a spot to grab some weights and do my circuit training. Afterwards, I joined WERK a group class. The instructor was on fire! I loved her energy and would come back to this class if I lived in the area. After class, I joined my friend and her girlfriends at the restaurant. I got my aperol spritz on with a cheeseburger. Food was fantastic! If I lived in the area, this would be my gym for sure! read more

I've been a loyal Midtown member for several years, but I've finally had enough. Every single year, without fail, the club raises its membership rates--by double digits. No matter how much you value the amenities or enjoy the classes, it's incredibly frustrating to be hit with steep annual price hikes, especially when there are no meaningful improvements to justify them. When I reached out to express concern, I received a polite but canned response that essentially said: "We raise prices every year, and that's just how it is." No acknowledgment of loyalty, no real explanation--just an unapologetic shrug. It's clear Midtown has become more about greed than goodwill. They know people are hesitant to leave once they're settled in, and they take full advantage. If you're considering joining, think carefully--this is a club that will bleed you year after year while offering less and expecting you to be grateful for it. read more

He was super helpful throughout the sign up process, quick to address questions, and has helped us with things throughout our membership. We loved working with Erhan, and he's definitely a big part of the reason we signed up Classes are awesome, the instructors are great. My favorites were boxing, yoga, and their shred style class - 5/5 Facility management seem to be going downhill - 2/5 Management seems a bit self absorbed, there's a lot of individual self promotion on their social channels, not really information about gym, classes, events, etc. This is minor, but they use poor quality products in their bathrooms (soap, shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper). Outdoor pool isn't well maintained or clean, last time I was there, there was a thin film on the top - gross. Overall - their classes and day to day staff are amazing. The Midtown Athletic Club is super fancy. The facility has an indoor and outdoor pool, indoor tennis courts, boxing gym, free weights, cardio machines, 3 studios for group fitness classes, multiple stretching areas, a spa/ salon, cafe and sitting areas and more. The locker room is stunning. I love that I can secure my belongings with my membership bracelet. You use it to enter the club and it is your key to lock or unlock any locker in the facility. No more fumbeling with a lock. I just tap my locker and go. Overall: It's pricey for a membership, but I must applaud the ambiance and cleanliness of the club. Very nice Athletic club. My friend brought me as a guest. Monthly membership is around $240. You get 3 guest passes a year, seems like members wish they did more. There are tons of workout classes and studios. The yoga studio looks so zen. The outdoor pool is very nice and has a large seating area. There are also several umbrellas and a hot tub. There are a lot of kids in the pool. They take 20 min lifeguard breaks where the kids have to get out but adults can keep swimming. The indoor pool is nice as well and has a fancy large hot tub. There is a small area to get smoothies and food inside. There is also drinks for purchase outside. Free garage parking for 3 hours. There's honestly so many features to this club, too many to list. If I lived close I would love to be a member here. read more

This is a beautiful gym but horribly run with its priorities in the wrong place. This gym is a nightmare if you're seeking a focused fitness environment. It's less of a gym and more of a chaotic daycare center that resembles a Disney cruise at its busiest. The place is overrun by poorly mannered teenagers and families with children, especially during the summer months when the pool becomes a kiddie play zone. Teenagers will take up equipment to play on their phones and the midtown management clearly has made a decision to cater this gym to families than to other adults without children. Trying to use any equipment or find a quiet spot for your workout is next to impossible amidst the constant noise and commotion caused by kids running wild. If you're serious about your fitness goals with a focus on adults vs children look elsewhere. This place is a complete waste of time and money unless you enjoy navigating through a sea of screaming children + poorly mannered teenage brats, and dealing with the resulting mess and chaos. Do yourself a favor and find a gym that values a peaceful workout environment over catering to families looking for a daycare alternative. Suggestions: Children/teenager free zones. Children/teenager free days at pool or at least better adult only hours at the pool. Most Chicago gyms of this size have a lot of families but others like East Bank Club do a better job catering to the adults that aren't interested in paying $500/mo to hang out with other peoples children and poorly parented teenagers. Most frustrating part in all of this is how we were sold on this gym. My wife and I were warned that the gym was a children zoo but still came to check it out because of it's location and amenities. We asked the sales person directly about the teenager/child problem and they promised us new rules were being implemented to help address this as (in his words) the leading reason people are leaving midtown are the kids. He had mentioned restricted family memberships, adult only pool hrs starting at noon, as well as a few other "soon to come" changes. None have be implemented in over a year. So management in this gym knows the children/families are a problem and lie to potential new members that are aware of it to bait them into membership. read more

Look, I enjoy going here, however idk if I can justify the price for what I value. The shower room is nowhere near EBC but it's nice. The lockers can be dirty at times though. Their pricing is getting crazy at $350 a month and I know it will increase again. I understand you get the tennis and racquet ball but it should be a separate charge for use of that stuff. The basketball court being across the street is also bothersome during the winter. They released their app which is pretty nice. To be fair to them though, with all the classes they offer $350 is somewhat fair. Boxing classes would cost a ton by itself. This place continues to completely rip its members off - especially those who pay exorbitant fees to play tennis. Despite something like doubling prices over the last five years or so, they still change the tennis ball way too infrequently so that you are playing with dead balls half the time. Another scam is if you sign up for a class, let's say cardio tennis, that is supposed to take place on multiple courts with one pro per court and one of the pros doesn't show up, do they give you a refund or discount the class??? Of course not. And apparently the air conditioning doesn't work on many of the tennis courts so it's like 85 degrees / 85% humidity despite being inside. Fresh off of the Lockdown, I was feeling unmotivated and out of shape. I had no routine and felt like I had no purpose. I joined Midtown as a motivator and it changed my life. This is a world class facility with an equally amazing community. The servers in the cafe know me by name, my son loves going to the on-site childcare, and I've become friends with many of the trainers. Not to mention, I've met so many great members that make going to Midtown an enjoyable experience every single day. They motivate me. It really does feel like a home away from home. Is it expensive? It sure is. But it's worth it. If you're a parent and debating whether or not you should sign up, then take my advice and DO IT. Even if you don't have kids, do it. It is not just a family place. If you want to challenge yourself, then this is the place. The variety of classes offered is unmatched. The instructors are the best in Chicago. I discovered my love for boxing here and frequently mix in other classes like Apex and 312 (HIIT style classes). I never thought I'd want to play tennis, but recently signed up for lessons and I can't believe I had never played before because it is so fun. They literally have something for everybody. I have no regrets about joining Midtown. Before joining Midtown, I had heard nothing but positive things about them, but I always assumed that the membership cost wouldn't be worth it to me. One day, I decided to do research about Midtown and also set up an appointment to do a tour. I was able to set up an appointment very fast (I think it was either the same day or next day) and it was great to do it during the summer. Summertime at Midtown is very lively due to the outdoor pool area. Besides fantasies of spending summer days by the pool, there were other factors that also influenced my decision to join Midtown - Availability and variety of different fitness classes - Outdoor fitness area (There are outdoor fitness areas with more classes, weights, and a few cardio machines) - Comfortable spaces to sit around and relax after a work out. Other things I like about Midtown - The smoothies are good ! - The locker room and showers are always very clean - Both hot tubs (indoor and outdoor) are roomy - The people at the salon/spa are nice If you are considering joining Midtown, you have to think a lot about whether the membership is worth it for you. Midtown is one of the most expensive fitness clubs in the area, but if you feel like you are someone that may really enjoy the different features that Midtown has available, it might be the perfect fit. One policy I hope they are able to change in the future is increasing the number of guest passes that members are allowed per year. I know it is lower right now because of COVID, but I would love the opportunity to bring more of my friends here in the future. My husband and I joined Midtown in December 2020 and were members for 2.5 years. We joined primarily for the gym, after a mediocre experience elsewhere. We did not partake in any of the classes, or kid-friendly amenities. We utilized the pool, cafe, and restaurant several times. Equipment was plentiful and the staff did its best to enforce pandemic regulations (masks). Everything felt clean and the amenities that could function safely, did. However, things began to shift as normal life slowly returned and more people began to join. It became really crowded, at all hours of the day besides maybe weekday mid-morning and late at night. Children ran amuck at the entry, sometimes it was like playing dodgeball on your way to the locker room. This didn't really bother me but might matter to others. Moreover, I couldn't count the number of times I stood and waited for a piece of equipment while somebody (typically teenagers) sat on it and mindlessly scrolled on their phones. I was once offered to work in my sets with a guy who took 15 minute breaks between his, claiming three pieces of equipment with his belongings at once. I got all four of my sets in during his rest period. Hey man, you do you, but remember there are other people here too. In the late winter/early spring of 2022, the club made an announcement of the upheaval of the club. They claimed they'd be adding two squat racks, a smith machine, calf machine, more dumbbells, etc. What they really did? Removed the training rig, including the land mine attachment, removed the decline bench, removed two platforms (primarily used for deadlifts). Sure, there are now "six squat racks," but in reality they just added racks atop of two platforms, which are often used for exercises other than squats anyway. Note that those were placed against windows, so you have to use your reflection to monitor your form, as there are no mirrors. Either way, not really net new equipment there. They did add some dumbbells and benches on the 2nd floor which were a welcome addition, but included what I think were Fitbenches - theoretically kind of neat but hard as a rock and better suited for a compact home gym (nobody ever used them). As of June 2023, the second smith machine never showed up, nor did the the training rig with the land mine or the calf machine. Coincidentally, the blog post citing all the changes was deleted some time in April. Strange. Generally speaking, staff will pretend to care and take your feedback, but they won't act on it or follow up. I met with Justin after the first phase of the changes with my concerns, including the mass layoff of all the custodial staff in order to hire a third party. I asked him to follow up with me on some items, but never heard back. Followed up again, silence. One minor, but obvious, recommendation I made to Justin was to swap the (ergonomically faulty) new hack squat with the booty builder due to the placement of a column and subsequent view of the mirror. Like I said, I never heard from him ever again, but I reiterated that feedback to two gentlemen who were on the floor a few weeks later. They thought it was a no-brainer and the machines were swapped two days later. Not sure why the feedback didn't land the first time. Maybe I wasn't taken seriously? Perhaps just complete lack of concern. I'll never know. There is some fantastic staff there. The custodial staff (the ones that were all fired) were great; I can't comment on the new third party team as we left the club shortly after they started. The team at the restaurant is great. Don't expect to ever be greeted at the front desk, though. Couple other thoughts: - Midtown does some fundraising/community involvement work, including a fundraiser for Hope for the Day, which is a local suicide prevention organization. It also sells Battle Bars (a protein-rich snack) at its cafe. Battle Bars has made anti-trans community remarks on its social media. 82% of transgender individuals have considered killing themselves and 40% have attempted suicide, with suicidality highest among transgender youth. The irony baffles me, but again, my feedback wasn't taken very seriously. - You'll be paying for parking if you stay at Midtown for more than three hours, which is effectively discouraging members from staying for things like an after-workout meal. Being able to validate long-term parking after spending $X at the restaurant seems like a smart and hospitable idea. TL;DR: Good amenities, but overcrowded and overpriced for a club that prides itself on community. Most of management doesn't actually care about member feedback, only their bottom line. read more

Doing their best to navigate covid policy and procedures with reopening and implementing progressive measures for providing a safe environment. You can tell a lot of thought went into this and they trained their staff well to keep up with cleaning and safety protocols. They reopened their pool this past Friday to allow for families with children to access the pool. While it is appreciated they are offering this, it is a bit of a process to secure a spot. Capacity is in the 90's and the process is a call line to secure your reservation. Call line opens at 6:30am, in which you leave a vm and hope, pray, cross fingers, rub Buddha's belly that you received a call back confirming your spot. read more

Somehow we were in some sort of wind tunnel and it sounded like radio static/screaming all day/night. The extra star is for the gym itself. Wouldn't come to stay again. Too many children on property, especially in the summer- just forget using the outdoor pool. And only one option to place your account on hold - medical reasons only. Joining and re-joining fee is $350+..and forget terminating your membership before one year unless you can provide documentation of relocation- very old fashioned and somewhat illegal. I toured the gym as I was interested in joining but left disappointed. The facility is beautiful - everything is brand new, there's an outdoor/indoor pool, as well as indoor and outdoor workout options in terms of strength and classes. However, there's a $250 initiation fee plus $230 a month in addition to a 12 month commitment. As a member you only get 3 buddy passes, otherwise it is $30 to bring a guest. They also don't allow you to try the gym before joining nor is the initiation fee negotiable. They also charge extra for virtual golf, pilates reformer classes, and you need to make a reservation to use the pool over the weekend. They also close relatively early during the summer. In my opinion they simply require too much of their members (and potential members) for benefits that are just OK. read more

I've been a member at Midtown for nine months now and am leaning towards cancelling at the end of my one year contract. It's a beautiful facility, but I haven't been as thrilled as expected. I think the culture of the club lacks sportsmanship and there is an attitude of entitlement amongst many members. On countless occasions, I have witnessed other members hogging numerous pieces of equipment or impatiently hovering around someone using a machine in a very obnoxious manner (such as tapping their toes, huffing and puffing...you know). Don't even get me started on the erratic driving of many folks in the parking garage, either. I quickly realized the club is catered towards families and I would have appreciated that aspect being made clear when I was signing up. I toured at a very off hour on a weekday, so I would recommend anyone interested in touring to go during a busier time to see all of the kids running around. Many parents have clearly NOT taught their children social etiquette. Kids are constantly running around the entrance area with no awareness of who is around them and their parents don't seem to care. The group fitness schedule has majority of the best classes starting at 8:30am or past 9am (geared towards post-school drop off, in my opinion) which is unrealistic for people with a regular 9-5 schedule or prefer an early gym start. Not to mention, the gym is PACKED anytime after 9am. Overcrowding is an issue and it seems they have oversold memberships. One major reason I joined was for the spin studio that was abruptly removed and relocated to a half outdoor garage area (thanks, but no thanks). There should be an adult only day or two at the pool every week. I get that they need to please everybody but it is very difficult to relax or work by the pool for the premium monthly price you pay. Kid-free 3pm and onward on Saturdays doesn't cut it. This club was sold as a social resort when I was joining, so you'd think they'd make it a perfect balance for younger, single folks to meet and mingle similar to East Bank Club and not just families. For $259 per month, I'd place the value more around $180 per month. Parking is only free for three hours, so if you want to enjoy an entire day at the club like a resort (which is one of the concepts they push when you sign up, ironically) expect to pay additional for parking. They'll nickel and dime anywhere they can. Many of the best classes are additional and not cheaper than local focused-studios (ie- Pilates is cheaper at various studios around Bucktown). I've used the spa a handful of time for massages. They are great but they also are a lot more expensive then going elsewhere in the city. I've only booked there for convenience because they always have availability, sometimes even immediate. Overall, I was expecting a lot more out of my experience at Midtown and am still unsure on if I will keep my membership in a few months. read more

If you are considering joining the club be aware they are raising new membership by 35%. Was $259 but will be $349. Huge increase. I'm a current member so I'm assuming we will all get the bump up soon enough. It comes out to over $1000 more a year than what we were paying. Kind of insane. I really hope the custodial staff, group fitness teachers, and admin teams will see an increase in pay for this. That is a massive increase of revenue for the club. Rarely write a review and hate to start the New Year on a negative note but here it is. I'm over this place. I have been a member since 2018 and the experience is vastly different from the pre-COVID era. I get needing to increase membership after going through COVID but it has become way too packed. I used to come here to workout 4-5 times a week and now find myself struggling to get motivated to come here at all. It is a nice facility, however not as clean as it used to be: bathrooms on the second for are constantly dirty, couches appear grimy, etc. Stood in a line 7 deep to fill up my water bottle today and it doesn't even fill up the whole way. I tried to sign up for the TNT classes but they only offered 2 Saturday classes which are full and can't even get on a waitlist because that is full too. Mind you I will be paying extra for these classes...for the price I pay monthly this place is no longer worth the cost. But what about the pool durning the summer?!?!? Yeah that has always been a huge plus except that it is always packed as well and a mission to find 2 lounge chairs next to each other or even 1 at times unless you want to sit next to the bar far away from the pool. read more

I started playing tennis here as a kid in the 90's and was thrilled to come back a year ago. It used to be great and going to the club was often the highlight of my day. The steam room alone was worth its weight in gold. Sadly someone got greedy and as the prices went up and member count increased, the quality of service drastically decreased. It's always packed, not as clean as it was. I've had to wait for everything from treadmills to water fountains, classes, showers... there seems to always be at least one facility out of order. The locker rooms are full, it's loud, there is no place to sit upstairs, and weekends are a zoo. What used to feel like shopping at Saks is now a trip to Marshalls. We cancelled our family membership and for $560 a month we're happy to go elsewhere. read more

Review #3. I have been fighting for two weeks to get my membership canceled. They will not budge. These people are truly willing to go the extra mile to retain your singular monthly $200 payment. I'm so sad. I just want to be able to sign up for another facility. After this treatment, I feel humiliated, stressed, anxious about even going there but have to continue paying for another 6 months. I have already been a member for 6 months which I think is enough time to make a decision regarding this kind of commitment. If its not working out its not working out. As you see from the manager's comment, Im not lying. The membership is at least $200 and you are basically locked in for a year. So it's like 4,000 for this gym. Not worth since the only thing included is the classes. Everything else offered at this gym is extra money. There are way more cheaper and better ways to get in your workout read more

The gym portion is great and they've done a commendable job preparing for reopening. If you are an adult looking to join because of the pool, I would only join if you are comfortable with children doing cannon balls around you and splashing in your face. For some reason the club cannot find a way to at least ensure that the adults in the pool aren't harassed by children who are not being monitored by their parents. Honestly, on a nice day it's no better than being in a public pool because of the club's inaction. There used to be an adult only section but I think they may have gotten rid of that because of COVID but that just allows everyone's kids to swim back and forth while spitting/splashing all the adults along the way. I'm pretty sure that there is some part of this that is very against the COVID regulations in Illinois. They will keep your equipment safe but they will let kids spit on you in the pool. read more
