2/5 I've been a member of LA Fitness for nearly 20 years, and unfortunately, the Hyde Park location is one of the most disappointing I've experienced. The locker rooms are consistently dirty, there are often no paper towels or sanitizing wipes available, and much of the equipment feels old and poorly maintained. For a "Signature" club, this location falls far short--it feels more like a Bally's from 1995 than a modern fitness facility. Really hoping to see improvements, but as it stands, this will likely be my last year as a member. Do better. Either upgrade, discount or close this location. read more

This place is located on the West side of Lake Park Ave between the Whole Foods and TJs. There is parking which I believe is just North of the gym. The gym is on the 3rd floor. I put in the instructions for the parking (see photos). I did not use it because I just walked from my hotel. The front desk people were friendly to me so I had no issues with that. The positives were that it was not crowded and they had the hip machine (see photos). The negatives were that they are considered a signature club so I had to pay $10 because my membership is basic. Also no basketball court and only 2 squat racks so that could be a problem if it gets crowded. Not bad overall. read more

I really like this location! I switched here from a previous gym, and I've been pretty happy I did. There are a ton of cardio machines from rows, to bikes, to treadmills. I've never had an issue of waiting for a treadmill like I have at other places, so I like that they have so many. I've never experienced any of the machines being broken either -- cardio or weightlifting. I like how many variations of each machine they have. For example, they have two variations of the leg extensions, two of leg curls, and about a million for bicep curls lol. The staff is pretty nice, and I've been satisfied with the conditions of the locker room/bathrooms. Parking is also free for the first 2 hours. Only down side is that it's too hot in here! No matter the time of the year, summer or winter, it's hot! read more

I love this gym! It is my preferred spot to exercise . They offer great classes and the staff is friendly!

On Sunday morning, the women's bathroom had no toilet paper in any of the four stalls. Not one. For a gym that charges membership fees, this is a basic sanitation failure. I went to inform the manager, expecting a simple fix. Instead, I was told there was "nothing he could do." When I suggested finding a temporary solution, he dismissed me and said it was "not his department" and that if I didn't like it, I could leave. It got worse. When I asked for his name or a business card, he refused. When I asked who his supervisor was, he claimed he was the boss and even threatened to cancel my membership over the conversation. This is not just about toilet paper--it's about basic hygiene, accountability, and respect for paying members. A gym that cannot maintain something this fundamental, and a manager who responds this way, is deeply concerning. I hope ownership is aware of how this location is being run, because this was completely unacceptable. read more

WORST GYMS TO WORKOUT!!!! The clients talk at the top of their lungs, the equipment is subpar, people play their music on boom boxes without headphones and no one says a word. some of the staff are really bad! Some front desk members are great! It's SAD how much this gym chain has digress to trash. I have to say it. Looking around for something else. read more

I'm honestly appalled. I visited this gym on a Sunday evening and much to my disgust, found what appeared to be certain bodily fluids all over the women's locker room. When I went to report it, the desk member said that he had already heard about it but couldn't do anything until after closing hours since there was no female janitor on duty. I hate to sound rude, but that is a sad excuse. It would take 15 minutes for the male janitor to clear the locker room, rope off the area, and clean the horror scene up. This location shut down with no notice or warning to employees or members. They have been in court with the landlord since 2019 and were evicted in February of 2024. All the while collecting yearly and monthly fees. "CSO Sports filed a civil case against former franchisee Hyde Park Fitness LLC -- previously known as PF Kenwood LLC -- in February 2019, according to court records. The landlord seeks $9,838.72 in damages. Attorneys with Chicago-based real estate firm Dubin Singer Phillips PC, which is listed as the franchisee's agent, did not respond to a request for comment. A judge's eviction order was filed Feb. 7, court records show. No active business license was listed for the gym's former location as of Tuesday, according to city records." All members should receive refunds. Planet Fitness and the franchisee basically took money from its loyal members and didn't give their employees any notice. read more

Excellent machines, horrible and disgusting management. Front desk treats you like they hate their jobs, and management/sales team scam you with hidden fees and charges. And that's beside the disgusting way they treated my friends who were trying to use their 3 days free pass which the gym mailed them and called them by phone to use. Significant issues with overcrowding at all hours of the day, including non peak hours, such as 2-3 p.m., 8 PM on weekdays, and sometimes 6 am on weekdays. There's sometimes not enough clamps. Sufficient amounts of cardio equipment, though. I believe there's never a wait for any of those machines. Many members use phones without headphones and loudly play music, which is not rectified by staff. read more

Pros: It's the only gym in the area The front desk people are always nice Cons: They're super pushy with selling you on unnecessary stuff. I went in to inquire about a membership and got roped into a like hour plus long sales presentation in personal training. I had to stop them and literally ask how much a basic membership event cost because they didn't even disclose that information and went right until selling me a training package. They also never even offered me a tour or talked about amenities I had to figure it out on my own. I have never seen anyone cleaning in there ever. They also don't have enough stations for self sanitation so I feel like a lot of people aren't wiping down the machine after use which is gross. You don't get any free towels or anything which is crazy for a membership of this price in my opinion. You aren't allowed a free guest to come with you unless you pay for that add on. Limited classes. I was excited to see they offered classes but they don't have many options and the times aren't scattered well throughout the day. There isn't a lot of room for doing floor exercises or using weights outside of what they have allotted. It's gets really packed and it can be hard to find somewhere to go to do your workout. I've seen people literally doing core workouts in the carpet behind the treadmills and stuff just to find some space. read more

I would like to share a situation that occurred at the LA Fitness on lake street in Hyde park to raise awareness for others. Went to work out on Thursday September 7 between 730 pm-830pm. Stored my wallet , keys etc in a locker with my very own personal bright Orange Which I did lock !!! Came back at 830 and went to the locker to retrieve my belongings and no lock on the locker? Looked inside to get my belongings and everything had been taken. Thank god we found the keys otherwise they have my wallet with my address and who knows what would have happened. Went to front desk and found staff to be very bothered by the whole thing. Suggested I make a police report and call this women? Tried that no sympathy there either. Found out that the individual brought in bolt cutters and it's happened before? What's it going to take to make that place safe. What's next GUNS? How does a person going to workout fit in cutting off a lock? Next topic as long as you look good on the outside doesn't matter what you do on the inside? Seriously? Of course it's no big deal because people are now driving cars into windows or bringing garbage bags and stealing right in front of cashiers and security and getting away with it! Wrong ! This is just wrong. I can only hope your location gets enough bad reviews that your enrollment drops and you close down. Maybe then you will do the thing that's right. Btw I was also told members are stupid and don't put locks on lockers or lock locks properly? Nice diversion tactic for covering up criminals! read more

I'm a firm believer that if the leadership is incompetent, there is a strong possibility that the environment will be inadequate. That's exactly the case at this facility. After witnessing the general manager, Lisa Porter exude condescending behavior with some of the other members; I purposely avoided having any interaction with this person. But because someone in the facility had stolen an item of mine, I went to Lisa Porter to express my disdain for thieves! Lisa Porter then tried to dismiss my gripe and brushed me off. So when I asked for her last name so that I could report the incident to LA Fitness Corporate, just like a coward, Lisa Porter tried to hide her identity and said: "......that they don't care about my item being stolen...." I then went to another manager asked for her full name and with no issue he divulged her full name. So I am very curious to get a response from corporate to see do they share the same sentiment that Lisa Porter shares being the front line employee and General Manager of this establishment. What's really disturbing is the fact that she doesn't have this condescending disposition with all the other ethnicities, just the blacks. Disgusting! read more

Driving into the parking lot of the LA Fitness Hyde Park location on 11/4 @ 10:30 a.m. was a nightmare! As my car moved to the gate to get my ticket, the female driver exiting on the other side was angrily screaming at the person on the intercom. As I drove upward to park cars were coming from every direction. One woman who was exiting at the top of lot screamed something at me. Finally, I saw the opening for me to get through but it would only happen by getting a car to move back. The man did it but he was pissed that i asked. For the right now, the company that handles the garage must develop and put into action a plan of immediate action to maintain an organized exit plan for drivers to leave. Things are very tense and the garage that you spent the money on to add the 3rd floor needs better management. read more

The gym is nice. Some of the classes have been good but a friend and I have mainly gone for Aqua Fit. The instructor has not been there for several classes. I've put on my swimwear and he never shows. Once I put on my swimwear and wait in the water, there's nothing else to do but go home because I don't have my workout clothes. It's very disappointing. No one announces and there's nothing at the front desk that says the class is cancelled. I've told the people in the office and they seem to listen but do nothing. Bad Business! read more

About one month ago I asked Adrian, the manager, about the broken equipment and the lackluster placement of dumbbells and barbells all over the gym. I literally couldn't find anything I needed and the machines I used were dysfunctional. He was super receptive to the feedback and I appreciate it because I attend this gym 4 days a week due to its close proximity to my home. I waited a while to see if the upkeep would continue and surprisingly it has. I think they've also hired more cleaners because the dust variation has significantly decreased. A staff that takes pride in its work is a staff work retaining. If I had one more wish, it would be that this location get a more versatile hack squat machine. Something that targets the total lower body rather than just blasting the quads. They have one in Bronzeville so I know it's possible. Maybe Santa will come early this year?! read more

I was a member of LA Fitness for years. Then, this "Signature Club" (more expensive... because they have towels?) opened up near my home. Rude staff, atrocious maintenance, filthy conditions. Broken water fountains. Mildew in the hot tub (when it isn't shut down). Leaky roof with random 5 gallon buckets in the middle of the floor to catch the dripping water. Despite their disgusting conditions and unfathomably neglectful maintenance, if your membership fees don't get collected, they are ALL OVER THAT SHIT. They will blow up your phone and email repeatedly until they get paid. One time when my bank replaced/updated my card they had on file, I was followed into the locker room shortly after checking in and confronted by an employee while I was changing. Unbelievable! They will never get another cent from me. read more

I've been going to LA Fitness in Hyde Park for about three weeks now with my friend, who has a membership. Today was the first time I was turned away because she didn't have a member pass--something we were completely unaware of. I would have been fine paying the $20 day pass fee, but the receptionist's attitude was incredibly rude and unprofessional. The way we were spoken to made the whole experience uncomfortable, so I left and went to another location instead. They seriously need to do better with their customer service. read more

Care about profit at all costs, especially member experience. The sales team is the most well funded part of the entire gym and will constantly pressure you and any guest into upgrading a membership. Meanwhile they are often missing weights, machines are frequently broken, and the bathrooms and saunas look like Chernobyl, though are probably worse for your health. 0/10, bad experience. read more

The facilities are decent but lacking for the price which is why I'll give 2 stars. Let me start by saying that I've worked at 2 luxury gyms (which this is not) but this gym could be on par if it weren't for the rude and uninterested staff. The woman at the front desk in the mornings is less than welcoming but i understand that working early in the morning isn't for everyone. Shane, the membership sales lead or manager, is the most condescending person I've ever had the displeasure to encounter. He needs to be retrained or trained in general especially on how to interact with paying members. I don't recommend paying full price for this gym (go through your employer if you can) and especially not giving them the commission they don't deserve. The only upside was the general manager was nice, informative, and welcoming when I cancelled my membership. read more

LA Fitness NEVER has mats for members to use during classes. This is not acceptable. I took the 9:45 a.m. class this morning and there were no mats available. Members should be able to attend a class and have the basic elects that are needed. Very disappointed. read more

The gym equipment is in good shape, it's a medium sized gym, just know that they will try and pressure you to sign up for a personal trainer at extortion prices and they don't let you skip your first free session so they can sit down with you and do their sales pitch. You can cancel the contact but they'll charge you 50% of your balance which is ridiculous. Be firm in saying no if your not interested cause the pressure will continue and they will also call you so you can sit down. read more

A love/hate is feeling with LA Fitness. The parking, unclean stations, and unmotivating music does not compare with other gyms in Chicago. Downtown even. The amenities that drew me to LA Fitness are usually dirty and smell bad. Not sure if another annual membership is in the cards. read more

Still has not called me back to respond to XSport fitnesses deal of $559 for 2 years access to ALL clubs. So I have worked out here several times and this is information will help you determine if this is the place for you: Occasionally they do not open at the scheduled times. You could be waiting for 5 to 30 minutes. It's a signature club and there is no basketball court or juice bar. Sometimes there are no towels ready and you may have to fold your own towels. Or take them out of a bin. They could benefit from hiring another cleaning crew. You could take a spin class and the next day the floors are sticky from the former participants sweat. Some times I come in first thing in the morning and there are paper towels left on the equipment from the day before. The staff seem friendly. There was a leak already in the roof and the place opened in fall 2013. The roof and damages have not been fixed two weeks later. Music might not work if you want to take a class. I have talked to management about my concerns. I gave them time to fix it since I know the gym was new.... Changes didn't happen. The manager is nice, but this does not help with fixing issues. I didn't think it could get worse, but it did. Nothing from my previous review has improved. Weights and equipment are left wherever clients decide to leave it. One has to be careful when walking, or you will trip over handweights, water bottles, towels, clothing, mats etc. Most machines are in bad shape and are not cleaned (by either clients or employees). Clients are allowed to behave however they want, from not wearing gym attire, including not having to wear gym shoes (yes, please let me follow you on the leg press machine after your dirt and gravel filled construction boots) being allowed to use the gym floor as a locker room (after the reviews I've seen with the state of the women's locker room, I almost give this a pass) clients being allowed to have open containers of beverages on the gym floor (well, since the ceiling leaks anyway, your Starbucks without a lid won't matter when it spills). For the last 60 days, at least 6 cardio machines are "out of commission" and by that I mean, they are haphazardly placed on the gym floor with caution tape interwoven between them. Half of the ab/stretching mat area is unusable (the other half is mostly unusable due to handweights, clients' clothes and bags). There is also some sort of machinery (some sort of lift) that one needs to walk around in order to use the remaining cardio machines. I was really hoping this location would get it together. Customer service is terrible (the front desk staff refuses to get off the phone to greet you, check you in or say goodbye). At this point, I can only blame myself for still giving this company money. read more

This is, without a doubt, the worst gym i have ever been to. When I first joined the gym around 8 months ago I was never given any sort of orientation of the gym layout or even breakdown of gym rules. Instead, I was pressured for most of my registration to add on personal training, which I refused. For several months after that, I received what seemed like a call every other day in the middle of my workday from a sale rep pressuring me to add personal training to my subscription. The salesperson even went so low as to insult me and insinuate that I was out of shape. I don't know what kind of messed up sales strategy LA Fitness staff is practicing, but insulting your customers into spending their hard earned money on an overpriced service isn't an effective strategy. Moreover, what others have said about staff at the gym being generally rude or disinterested and on their phones is true, resulting in a gym that often is unclean and disorganized. I also had a bad interaction with now two instructors at this gym. The first was in late 2023. I was asked by an instructor whether I would join her class. I said, "No, thank you." I was still recovering from surgery and was still doing very gentle exercise. The instructor did not like my response and glared at me. Later, when I realized I had forgotten my water bottle in the class room and went in to get it, she yelled at me, "Get out! There is a class in here!" It was rude and annoying, but ultimately I let it go, just as I let everything else above go. Until now. What happened to me at a group class today takes the cake. I usually prefer to do my own workouts because I suffer from two torn ACLs and a torn meniscus, and I don't want to risk re-injury. But I decided to give the Power Circuit class a try with EJ. Everything was going fine until I noticed that one exercise, sprinting in a circle, was starting to bother my knees (as side motions tend to di with ACL complications). I noticed that two other women had chosen to also not do the circle sprints and were instead doing another exercise with weights. I decided to take out my jump rope so I could still do some high intensity cardio exercise. The trainer ran over to me and told me to put my jump rope away. I explained that I had knee injuries and that the circle sprints were hurting me. He brushed off my concern and said jump rope was worse for my knees than the circle sprints, which is totally false. When I refused to rejoin the circle sprints the instructor started yelling at me in front of the entire class, "AND YOU STILL AREN'T LISTENING AND BRINGING YOUR OWN EQUIPMENT INTO MY CLASS!!!" This behavior was rude, disrespectful, and honestly, disturbing. It is completely unprofessional for an instructor to act in this way towards a member, and it is also unprofessional to try to pressure a member to perform an exercise that they have explicitly stated is bothering them and that potentially could cause the injury. What is even more disturbing is that when I looked at online reviews, I discovered a very similar bad experience with EJ from another woman member, Kamisha from 2023. And clearly the gym leadership has done nothing to address this instructor's inappropriate behavior since then. As soon as my gym membership ends, my husband and I will be signing up elsewhere. I can forgive a lot as this is was not the only problem I have had with this gym but staff creating a toxic work out environment is where I draw the line. One thing I should add is that the front desk personnel was very nice to me when I told her my experience and even offered me a tissue as I was in tears. This is the kind of staff that should be valued and offered advancement in the company, but unfortunately, it seems like LA Fitness only cares about squeezing ever last little penny out of you without regard to the major issues present in its gym, including the wellbeing of its membership. read more

It's New Year Day and it's Monday so I decide to go to the 9am aqua class even though I had a bad experience with the instructor EJ about two months ago. After class, he confronts me because I left a bad review about his class two months ago. I told him you don't yell at women and he said he can do what he wants to do. Then, he said I hope your arms hurt from today's workout. Now, do you get up on the first day of the New Year with "pettiness" on your mind. I told him to have a Happy New Year and hit him with the peace sign. You are not going to disturb my peace so early in the year. Get a therapist sir because clearly have some issues. read more

Just joined LA Fitness Hyde Park location on 7/10/2021 and today was my second visit and I must say "Everything" and "Everyone" was AMAZING! The Enrollment Experience Ali was Flawless and my 1st Personal Trainer session with Malik was STELLAR! The Entire Staff was Friendly and Professional. The only reason we go to this gym is because it is close to our house. Its dirty, unorganized, and most of the people who work there do not care about their customers experience, including the management. Bags and clothing laid across workout equipment and workout benches, apparently being used as someone's personal locker. Most of the time weights are everywhere except in their proper place. Ask a manager why this is acceptable and he acted like it wasn't an issue. If the manager is clueless, obviously conditions arent gonna change anytime soon. read more
