I am a LA Fitness member who utilizes the cardio equipment and swimming pool. The cardio equipment at the Smithtown location is usually available and accessible. The cup/beverage holders need to be cleaned(gum) However, as a swimmer, I find the swimming pool cloudy, warm, and dirty. There always is sand/dirt debris and the water is practically opaque! Also the lifeguard is on his cell phone texting the entire time practically never looking up to supervise the pool! read more

For this location and the adjacent to be actively looking for new members year around-i was flabbergasted by the abhorrent customer service given to me and I was literally planning on joining in as a member to support a friend who works there. Because I'm from out of town I didn't realize there are other options gyms that are less expensive with less predatory prices. For those who are still reading: it's only worth visiting if you have that free three day trial. The way the front staff vilified me, threatened me, and disrespected me was hilariously abusive. The parking lot is terrible, let me start off by saying that. You walk in and it looks big. Theres a bunch of racquetball rooms, a big exercise room for classes. But when classes are going on, theres a TINY section that you can stretch in the front of the gym, and another tiny section near the weights. It's ridiculous. There was 2 people on the mat doing their thing, and I had to stretch on the floor. The treadmill needs to be updated BADLY. They had barely any channels, and my headphones are brand new (nothing wrong with them) the sound of the TV made a high pitched sound like it was about to die on me. You wanna know how old the treadmills are? It had the old ipod wire to it. You know, the 1.5" part that you plug into the bottom of the phone. Yeah, enough said. The bathroom had the DIMMEST lighting ever. WHY? The showers were disgusting. How can anyone shower there. I was IN AND OUT of there as fast as possible. Also, the showed curtain was see thru, showed my entire front to the world while showering. So unnecessary. The sauna was so small. It fits only 4 people comfortably - I know this because only that's actually how many people were in there. I could touch the other person beside me. I wanted to try a new LA, but never again here. Nope. Very basic gym. No snack bar like most LA Fitness locations. Also, there was a very rude yoga instructor named Eric G. who kept criticizing me in the opening of class and demanded I take off my headphones, which was appalling to me as music is a critical part of my yoga and exercise regimen. I didn't appreciate his unprofessional and disrespectful demeanor in comparison to other great, friendly and wonderful yoga instructors this chain has had. I really really am not to fond of this location. My home gym is Port Jeff Station and in comparison it's like a 5/10. While I was stretching in the designated room I noticed how dirty and dusty the floor was. Same thing for when I was lifting by the mirror, the floor was just flooded with dust bunnies and it looks like they never vacuum which makes me wonder if they ever clean or sanitize anything else like the showers for example. So gross. When I was done with my workout and went to hit the sauna I realized the light was burnt out -__- like how hard is it to change a damn light bulb!? This gym seems a little smaller than other LA fitnesses I've been to also. I only come here for quick workouts in between jobs and I'm planning on keeping it that way. This place is HORRIBLE. I was in the woman's locker room after taking a shower and I was getting dressed. The cleaning woman with blonde hair whom refused to give me her name came in and looked at me with DISGUST. It was at 5:39pm in Tuesday January 19, 2021. I asked if there was a problem. She continued to look at me with disgust. She then said with WRATH " put some clothes in" . I walked out of there with my coat and slippers. On the way out I spoke with the manager Kristina who claimed she was the Operations Manager. She as well wouldn't give me the cleaning woman's name. My fiancé comes to this gym all the time. For awhile I was going weekly as his guest and there was always something wrong. The weights are always a mess, nothing is kept clean, the equipment is always all over the place you have to search for things you need for minutes at a time which is extremely inconvenient. Sure, they have everything you need so if you don't care about all the above stuff then whatever. I suppose it's a good place in the area if you really want to join a gym. I recently started using the Smithtown location of LA Fitness and am quite pleased with all aspects of it. I must commend Employee Jose Lovos who I believe is one of the managers of this location and if he isn't he should be. He always greets me by my sur name and is always happy to assist me with any problem concerning the club I may have. Overall the club is quite good. There is enough free weights, machines, and cardio equipment to keep everyone happy. The place is relatively clean and the sauna and pool always are operational. Friendly crowd and never a problem. I would recommend LA Fitness over New York Sports Club (former member for 20 yrs) who I see are now advertising again. Stay away from NYSC. LA Fitness is one of only several gyms who got through the pandemic. NYSC went bankrupt and was bought by a new company and has very few locations not a proven track record. For the money this Club is your best bet. Good Staff who are respectful and decent equipment that does the job. read more

I've been attending this location since the grand opening, and I can't say I've had any issues with the location itself. Issues with LA Fitness policy have definitely gotten on my nerves, like the $10/month freeze fee when I'm away at school, but the ability to attend any location across the nation makes LA Fitness well worth the hole it burns in my pocket. I attend the gym every day, sometimes twice a day, so I can definitely say I've gotten to know the staff pretty well, if I didn't already know them from high school, and they're all super sweet and accommodating. My only complaint about employees would be when there's a new personal trainer on staff and I get asked EVERY DAY if I want a free session. But I get over it pretty quickly! Also, don't get too thrown by the stone faced cleaning woman, she does a great job, who cares if she's not smiling, I wouldn't be either! Things are kept pretty clean, sometimes during busy hours things can get a little messy on the weight floor but nothing that bad. My mom always asks how the showers are because I shower there often and I always answer, "cleaner than a college dorm!" So if you've been in a dorm, you'll understand the shower situation is pretty good! Here's my major complaint that has been killing for the last month and a half (or so it feels that long)... THE BROKEN SAUNA. I'm not sure it has as much to do with the location itself as it does the company. I'm paying for the amenity so it's pretty annoying, and I'm not looking to go to one of the other locations just for a sauna, so I really wish they would push to have it fixed ASAP. Overall I recommend this location over Commack or Lake Grove. Its size, cleanliness, and location convenience are awesome. Place is always clean and is always not busy due to the expensive rates. I came from NYsports club which was only 20$ a month and no money down which is half the price of this place. One thing I missed about Ny sports club is that the front desk employed were so much nicer! The front desk people at LA fitness are all stuck up and are all mean (especially the women). Would rate higher if they were a little nicer and would actually acknowledge you. Also PLEASE keep the air conditioning on, sometimes it's hot! If you want a gym that you can walk in, do your workout, and get back to your life...look elsewhere. From an unfriendly staff to a complete disorganized free weight area to hordes of young kids standing around, this place is awful. The free weights are NEVER in the correct place let alone organized and mostly scattered around the facility. I do fault the patrons who do this but I have seen the trainers do this as well. Trainers often take over 2-3 machines at a time and drag the weights and barbells over to the area rendering all that is said useless. When did a gym become the new teenager hangout? For the size of the place, it often feels cramped and unusable in many areas due to this. I have visited at various times and days of the week and it never changes. Staff is unfriendly and god forbid you ask a question about the location of something. I feel like I'm at retro fitness. Parking and traffic? Good luck. On a positive note, the treadmill, stair master and stationary bike section is fine. I cannot speak on the classes or spin classes. You can never find the parts to the cable machines you need to use, again scattered around like a bad hide n seek game. This is one of the main la fitness I go to when I'm in Long Island, ny. Don't see why everyone posts bad reviews. This is quite one of the bigger la fitness in the area honestly. A lot of equipment and most of the times you wouldn't have to wait to use them. It does get busy in the evening as everyone finishes work but it's not crazy busy. Change rooms are clean. I have been an LA Fitness member for almost two years and actively attend Aquafit classes at several clubs. Usually my choice is driven by my schedule, class availability, and the instructor. Over the years I have my favorites and not-so-favorites. The Smithtown club has a good Aquafit schedule and offers classes three mornings (M,F, Sat) and two evenings a week (M,W). Always check the posted schedule for times and instructor, and to see if there is a substitute instructor. This facility is generally clean and the staff is friendly. Members are also generally friendly. Parking is difficult, but there is a lot or turnover and plenty of spots, even if far away. This pool tends to be on the cooler side, but after working out you feel pretty comfortable. I highly recommend Maria (Monday 9AM - great workout), Christine (Monday 6PM - really fun!) and Tina (Friday AM). Hope this info is helpful! read more

This gym isn't like the other la fitness I've been to. This is probably the smallest one! The Machines are kept clean for the most part. The layout of this gym is just weird!!! There are a bunch of 16 year-olds walking around bullshitting. While their rich parents pay for them to go and joke around and waste time on a machine someone else can use. I think Xsport is far better than LA fitness. People come to actually workout... It's 24hrs... They have a state-of-the-art locker room, steam room, sauna, better workout machines, salon. A nice clean gym. Staff at the front desk is always friendly and helpful. Plenty of ellipticals, treadmills & bicycles but I have had to wait to use some of the other equipment and since there is only 1 piece of some of them it can be a bother when something is broken. I've taken the spin classes and love them but unfortunately have not been fitting into my schedule anymore. I intensely dislike the pushy trainers they have stalking members as they work out. I realize they need to make a living but there has to be a better way. Now that the summer is here I also feel the club is way too hot. I'm all for working up a good sweat but this place isn't even cool when you walk in the door. Overall like everything there are pros & cons. I'll keep going. read more

This is by far the worst LA fitness in the area, first of all, parking is horrible, if you are not there super early, like as soon as they open, expect to wait for parking or walk far away. Second, the staffs are unfriendly and rude, everyone from the receptionists to the trainers and managers walks around with an attitude and thinks very highly of themselves, unless you are there to open an account, and the staffs are too busy on their phone or socializing with their friends, or their loved ones, i seen staffs bringing their boyfriends, girlfriends, lovers, husband, wives, mistress to the gym and just hang out at the trainers desk, when did a gym become a hang out for teenagers?i have gotten yelled at by some short old trainer for dropping the weights, have you ever lifted heavy? Sometimes you just can not hold onto 60lb dumbbells after 10 reps of shoulder press, an I've been told I can't leave my bag by the trainers desk because it only for "trainers" and their friends, meanwhile their friend can leave anything there, btw if you befriend them you can do whatever the fuck you want and they will come and high five you. And when i left it by the corner of the wall, I got some "manager" guy came over to me and tell me I have to take it to a locker, I chase up to him and pointed out everyone who has bags on the floor with them and then he changed his words to "you need to have it with you at where you workout.",very very rude and disrespectful. I no longer workout at this gym because I got fed up with the bullshits, and I went to another location. I really like the equipment offered but the monthly charge is absurd for the what you get. Weights are always laying around the gym to where you cannot find the right one you want. Customers should put them back, but you can't force them to. I wish employees would do so. Many ellipticals are squeaky or make a clunking sound. They could keep these to date with the sky rocketing price of $45 a month. I do however enjoy the classes though I hope they add more classes at about 4 p.m. since none exist right now. read more

First day here. So far I've noticed maintainence workers leave their tools all over the floor where people could easily trip. Also the men's bathroom was nasty. You would figure at 8am it would be very clean since the gym had just opened but no... Paper towels clogged in the sink drains, urine on the floor and one stall had feces on the tiled wall. If you're going to charge a rate higher than other gyms you should justify it other than it being a large gym. Staff is inconsistent and rude. Was give one price for myself plus 1 to join. After coming back a few weeks later as discussed the price we agreed on went up by $100! We were told that we can hold off while we used our last month at another gym. We even had another couple that was going to make the switch with us. Because of the price change they lost 4 accounts. During our trial, place is by far the dirtiest gym I have been too. One thing to add. Our salesman wrote on the back of someone's personal contract and gave it to us to take home which has someones personal information with credit card information left in front of us. read more

Been trying the gym out, it is a nice facility with plenty of machines, never had to wait for an elliptical or treadmill. There are the obvious pitfalls you seem to encounter for most gyms- the dreaded lack of toilet paper and those people that do not seem to know how to properly use a toilet making the bathroom unsightly. One BIG pain in the ass is the VERY pushy sales team. They will haunt you in your dreams in order to join. When it comes down to it, $50 a month is a bit too rich for my blood so I will stick with outdoor cardio! I was a Bally's member and thought I could just transfer, but it seems I am gonna have to pay the same as everyone anyways. Overall nice, but could be cleaner and make sure you wipe the equipment down. Also a word to the wise, those hand sanitizer containers on the wall are actually filled with cleaner for the machines, do not use it for your hands! read more

Kinda pricey per month but not bad for what's included. With my membership it grants me access to any LA Fitness location. This comes in handy depending if I want to go to the gym straight from work, while I'm spending time near my boyfriend's neighborhood, or the one in my own hometown. It also is helpful for when I want to do a class since it multiplies my options of finding a class time that fits my schedule. It gets crowded but never to the point where I can't get in my cardio. Most, if not all, locations have a pool, basketball court, racquetball, separate room for spinning, and a sauna. Worth the investment. read more

Overall the gym works -- machines are plentiful and has basic amenities. Where this gym and apparently Most LA Fitnesses fail and fail miserably is customer service. Not sure where they recruit the clowns working the front desks but I am sure they could do better recruiting from McDonalds -- no offense to those working at McDonalds. The personnel are mid-20s guys who think it is a privilege for us to attend their gym. They walk around with a Napoleon complex -- short and stocky and act as if they own the joint. Come on, no one needs this type of BS. Their customer service capabilities is comparable to a monkey solving a jig saw puzzle...just god awful.
