The 2nd you walk in, you feel like you have entered a world where normal rules do not apply ....self expression is not just allowed, it is a demand.. It's a shame the staff is so condescending and rude because there are some really beautiful items in this store. I approached the counter to pay and the person behind the counter said, "What do you need?" instead of how can I can help you as if I was interrupting her very important conversation with her coworker. Oh What Fun! If you're a lover of all things vintage or unique, get yourself to La France. Folks are always telling me, "you NEED to get to La France" and I'm so excited to say I finally managed to make it happen. In Ybor for a concert at The Orpheum, we had time to kill before the show. I realized we were approaching La France and I lost my mind when I saw the OPEN sign on the door. Yes! The place was hopping, but it was also a Friday night so that's to be expected. Most of the shoppers were looking for Halloween costumes or items to complete their costume. I was just looking to look ... Not on any particular mission. Someone could honestly spend hours in this store - there's so much to look at - it's wall-to-wall clothing, shoes, accessories like purses, jewelry, hats, etc. I found a very cute necklace with a black binoculars charm. Super cute! Will post a pic. The service was spot-on and you can tell the employees enjoy being their and like each other which is a HUGE deal in retail - makes shoppers feel welcome. We always find a special piece to add to our wardrobe at La France. They have authentic vintage pieces as well as new vintage style options. The employees are friendly and really helped us find pieces that we might have overlooked on the racks. One lady worked with us to get the perfect fit with a new corset. She took the time to give us tips on how to get the corset on and off. Some pieces are very affordable but others are pricey. You never know what you'll find but it will be fun. read more

Another overdue review. I can't remember the first time I stepped into La France but I remember hearing a story about my friend buying a wedding dress from here so I was intrigued. I have been involved in pinup for some years now and it was at La France that I was able to buy my first Hell Bunny dress. Perhaps even two? I can't remember. From here I've also purchased some Golden Girls coin purses that I've distributed to my fellow diehard fans. My latest visit to La France happened this month and I did walk away empty handed- but almost did not. I appreciate the $5 bin. As far as their new business practices, yes it's different but I'm sure there's a reason behind it. Many patrons gladly complied because there's no other place like this. Really nice and quirky little shop. Had a mens section to the far left behind the wall. Had a lot of unique outfits from a lot of different cultures and antiquey looking things in glass cases. There were these masks that seemed really cool, one was a black one with feathers and another was one of those death doctor ones you see from the black death era. I would have bought them if it wasn't for the fact that I can't take them with me back to Boston. I had a blast looking through all the stuff they had in the place while MIL was looking at dresses. The staff was super friendly and I was able to pick up some nice things for myself. Prices were reasonable and not things I would have found anywhere else. Notable eras such as Flapper styles from the 1920s, Zoot suits of the 40s, and Pin up fashions from the 50s are accurately represented here. They have a selection of sexy pirate wench costumes for sale; just in time for the Gasparilla pirate festival held in late January. It's also a gem for brides looking to find the perfect vintage dress or accessory to accompany their gown. I was hesitant to try their dresses on. Since many of their garb are over a half century old; if not more, their garments are covered in plastic to maintain integrity and beauty of the fabric. There's a section to the right dedicated for men so guys, if your looking to dress to impress, this is your shop! My new fave store in Ybor. This reminds me of outfits you would find at a Speakeasy. The dresses are so detailed and vibrant. They have casual dresses, formal dresses, & even wedding dresses. Headpieces so intricate with feather pieces and jewels, top hats, and vests, and suits for men with fancy cuff links can all be found here. This store sells many costumes, costume pieces, shoes, accessories, vintage outfits from various eras of time, etc. In addition to the historic theme of the store, it's located in a historic building which still retains all of its historic elements as an added effect. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They're willing to help you decide on a costume, outfit, etc. based on your needs. Pricewise, may be a little bit on the expensive side depending on how elaborate you're willing to go. For some who are into this stuff, it may be worth it as many of the items are well-made. If you're into retro, vintage, vintage-inspired or quirky apparel and accessories, this place is HEAVEN, right on 7th Ave in Ybor. A few important things you should do before you go, if you're going for true vintage- take your measurements, your shopping will be so much more fun. For the vintage-inspired clothing (my favorite!), be aware that the sizing is all over the place, and usually runs much smaller than what you're used to wearing. La France is the best store in town for vintage-inspired clothing, hands down. They carry Bernie Dexter, Unique Vintage, Hell Bunny, Trashy Diva, Effie's Heart, Ixia, PUG and more! They only keep one random size out for each style, so be sure to ask them if you don't see your size. The employees are really helpful and totally used to running in the back to look for sizes, trust me I probably send them back four or five times when I visit. They really want you to be happy and find something you love. Every inch of this store is brimming with delights. New and vintage shoes, purses, hats, jewelry, accessories, coats, dresses, skirts, swimsuits, men's apparel, brooches, cigarette cases, aprons...it's amazing. Every era is represented, so if you're looking for a costume piece or just want to dress like a 20's flapper or a 50's pinup girl, this is a place you'll find what you're looking for. Clothing and accessories here are not the standard garage or estate sale fare that occupies most Tampa/St Pete vintage shops and probably sits on the shelf for a year. This is the place to dress in authentic 20's to 80's new (replica brands) and used clothing for a themed party (e.g. historical such as Gatsby), Gasparilla, or just to accommodate a standout or retro style. Their inventory for men and women is extensive and covers two rooms in the historical building. I just love this little store that is jammed packed with so many things. Everytime I go I buy a piece of jewelry. I love looking at the vintage clothes and jewelry. I Love this shop, wonderful vintage find in the middle of Ybor. I first went to La France to find an alternate wedding dress option, while they had a lot that would have worked I didn't find anything that suited my taste and as it is s vintage store, they can be a bit pricey. We also purchased bow ties for the men in the wedding party (pictured). They were wonderful and everyone loved the colors. The employees at La France are helpful but it can get busy and therefore challenging to get assistance.
