Oh my goodness. This is an adventure. Bring a friend and share the experience. We saw a live turkey going to it's new home, along with a box of quail. The staff was super nice. Not what I expected for a slaughter house. Carnegie! They educated us on different kinds of duck ( Donald is still my favorite) So. We picked up a clean and prepped duck for Christmas. For holidays, be warned, the line can be nuts. Go early. Call an hour before and your little one will be waiting for you. read more

LA Fresh Poultry has been my go-to provider for Holiday Turkeys for about 5 years now. This year, we also got three ducks. The birds are truly outstanding. Fresh, organic, and delicious. I would not even consider buying my poultry anywhere else. Do yourself a favor and upgrade to LA fresh poultry. read more

Getting stuck in traffic finally paid off! Behold fresh chicken that tastes amazing. Noticed the large chicken sculpture and fresh poultry sign and got curious. Note to drivers....there is a bumpy alleyway that will bottom out your car so keep to the front of the store only. That said, got my fresh chicken and bought some amazing smelling mint and off I went. Well more like crawl through traffic back to Westside. One delicious baked bird later, I'll be back for the duck! FYI I used the fresh mint I bought there to make lemon mint sports water bottle drinks. Was spectacularly minty and refreshing. This place is a keeper...and also they have fresh eggs. May the traffic god smile on you, worth a trip here. read more

Atrocious customer service. I called and then instead of the person saying, "Hello. I will be with you in a minute," the person just kept me waiting while I heard talking in the background. Then, there was no help with my order and someone made fun of my voice. It is very disheartening that basic respect for human beings cannot be upheld here. read more

I'd been curious about this place for years so when I found myself nearby I had to stop in. I poke my head in without realizing that it's 5PM and the guys who run the show just got into a car and are ready to drive off. They're kind enough to step out of the car and answer questions even when it's clear that I'm not buying anything. I get the tour and an explanation of how they work and how much better their birds are than what you can get at the store and then the guy steps behind a bakery counter. He adds that his son's a remarkable baker and tells me to choose an item. Uhh.. I don't fault them for smelling like a old bird cage. They raise poultry, it couldn't smell like anything else. But buying baked goods from that same place?? I'm having trouble there. I choose a cookie anyhow. A powdery, white number that looks a little like a pfeffernusse. I say thanks and head off. Yeah...what's this going to be like. One bite proves that I call 'em wrong almost as often as I call 'em right. That thing was awesome!!! Crumbly, delicately sweet, an absolutely amazing cookie. That plus the remarkably friendly service means that I'll be back to try out more baked goods ... maybe even a chicken or two. read more

This place is really a secret gem. One of the reasons I love living in LA. It's a unknown fresh poultry shop, where things like this don't really exist anymore. If you want the freshest poultry, come here. The prices are great and the service shines. You have to be comfortable with seeing the whole animal and embracing the natural experience. This is not your typical supermarket meat aisle. I love this place and will only buy my poultry here from now. Eggs are also great. read more

I've been searching for a truly fresh butcher for months on end, so I really wanted to love this place based on the review. But what I saw when I made the long journey there was absolutely revolting. No one will ever be able to convince me that this place is clean in any way. I grew up on farms around chickens and livestock...it wasn't the smell...I expected that. I've also traveled the world and have experience with true butchers! This place is filthy and unsanitary and there is no excuse for that kind of filth! There was animal excrement all over the floor. The "fresh produce" that was sitting out was all rotting, wilted, black and absolutely COVERED in flies. There were a few pieces of meat in their meat cases that were discolored, flies buzzing around and sitting in pools of blood. My mind is blown how many good reviews this place has and how many people were waiting in line. I'll take my chances with grocery store meat. read more

Heard a lot of great things, but I was shown otherwise. Walked in asked if they had boneless skinless chicken thighs. Lady said yes and proceeded to bag and weigh bone in skin on chicken quarters. I again asked for boneless skinless chicken thighs said they didn't have that. Then asked for four dozen eggs (mind you this is all while the lady was having a full blown cell phone conversation). I get bagged a dozen and a half eggs and she then asks for my card thinking they are grabbing me more eggs. They aren't. I get charged and repeated that I asked for four dozen eggs. They respond with "thats only 20 for you". I swiftly left, and no longer returning to this business. read more

Extremely rude staff. I drove across town for a specific type of egg. Only for them to tell me they had a $10 minimum on cards. I ask if I could pay a fee, they refused. The woman working the cash register told me to walk to the fast station up the road to ask for cash back. It's standard that a merchant can charge a fee to use a card. This really came down to her being too lazy to add a .50 cent charge so she instead told me to walk alone a block to a gas station who doesn't offer cash back. After walking there, not being able to get cash, having spent 20 mins searching for parking, I just left. Not worth it unless you like being inconvenienced. read more

Amazing service and fresh chicken. I took the bus to his shop and my bus was late so I didn't want my order to spoil in the sun. Owner was super nice and allowed me to put my order in the freezer and gave me a free drink while I waited. This is how you treat customers... respect+1 read more

I just received a Bronze Heritage Turkey and Prime Rib Roast from LA fresh Poultry today. I am very happy to say that I'm pleased with my delivery. Great place for buying fresh poultry. Service is friendly and fast. I got brown chicken from this place. Cooked chicken curry. Wow the taste was so good. Tasted what real chicken should taste like. No brine injection just fresh chicken. Am glad this place is around. Parking is bit tight during busy hours. Moves fast though. read more

I visited LA fresh poultry last Saturday in the late morning to purchase a rabbit. I read the reviews posted here prior to, and it was about what I expected. I don't recommend going to a place like this if you would rather not know where your food is coming from. Yes, it's easy to forget that the piece of meat you're staring at was once a living, breathing thing. However, if you're cool with all that, which I think you should be if an animal is giving its life for your consumption, then go ahead and keep reading. But seriously, I'm going to get into detail. The first thing you should know about this place is that it is Halal, meat slaughtered according to Islamic law. I won't get into the details here of what exactly that means, but I believe that it is swift, clean, and humane. I'm not here to debate that, just to write a review so I'll move on. The atmosphere of the actual shop leaves much to be desired but they are very speedy. I asked the woman at the counter for about a 3 1/2 lb rabbit and she pointed for me to go around to the back to pick out what I wanted. I walked back through the gate where the animals were kept and I was actually surprised at how clean everything looked and smelled. Yes, there is a smell just because of the nature of what they do back there. But it was not offensive to me, nor were the animals piled on top of each other. One of the men pulled out the rabbit I pointed to and I nodded. He looked very healthy and they let me inspect it. They told me to go back out and wait and it must have taken them about 10 minutes to dress it. I paid $20. I won't visit this place every time I want fresh poultry, but I will come back for special occasions and when I'm looking for something that isn't readily available in my local market. Like super fresh rabbit. And I have to say, although I grew up in a farming community so this is something I'm familiar with, it's good reminder that you should treat the meat you prepare with care and respect. I'm not some kind of hippy, I just think it's good juju. P.S. - Parking SUCKS. don't pull into the driveway, just find parking around the corner. It will save you some major grief. I made that mistake and it took me at least five minutes to maneuver around a few cars and escape through the narrow alley. read more

Updated: WARNING! INFECTED MEAT! While I was trimming the rabbit meat, I found a large abscess about 2 inches wide under the right armpit of one of the rabbits I purchased here. ("An abscess is a pocket of fluid and pus, which results from an attack by pyogenic organism (e.g., bacterium) followed by the destruction of cells.") I really had high hopes for this place and drove over an hour to get there. But, if they are willing to sell animals with infections to their customers, I doubt I'll ever come back again. Previous review: "Good: the lady at the front was polite and nice. They can cut the meat exactly how you want it. Keep any organs and parts you want. Large rabbits (around 7-8 lbs). Fresh meat (rabbit was still warm when they gave it to me) Bad: Called in and asked for the pricing on rabbit. Guy told me it is $15 per rabbit. When I went in, they charged me $23 per rabbit saying because the rabbits are large. Another customer there told me they probably took advantage of me. Parking sucks! Basically: If you want fresh meat, this is a good place to go. Just be prepared for very bad drivers though. And if you have a lowered car, be careful not to scrap getting in. If you have a wide car, don't bother. Park down the street or something. I'd make sure of the pricing before going because even the yelp reviews seem to vary on the price per rabbit. (Chicken is $12) I'm still giving it 3 star because the pricing is still better than buying by per pound elsewhere (average everywhere else is about $7-13 per pound for rabbit). At $23 per rabbit, mine came out to about $3.15 per pound." read more

I bought two huge rabbits from LA Poultry and turned them into about 8 net pounds of amazingly fresh sausage, and the total cost for the rabbits was less than $50. As far as the condition of their establishment, deal with it! It's probably much more sanitary than an industrial producer - and read Omnivore's Dilemma as to why the small producers are constantly getting squeezed out of production by regulations that favor large-scale farms that spew e. coli all over the place... Eat local and put up with the smell already! read more

Walked in and was immediately greeted by an older gentleman who seemed to be in charge. He asked me what I needed (a duck) and immediately disappeared into the back to begin prepping the bird. He later informed me that I could call in advance next time, and save myself having to hang out for 10 minutes or so. I was asked how I'd be preparing my duck, and am sure that I would have been suggested some spices or rubs from the various types on display, had I not already had a recipe in mind. I also received a business card and complimentary Avian Health calendar, which provided some reading material as I waited for my duck to be plucked, etc. The casual hipster who wants to source local poultry should give this place a go, but should also be advised that the bird he receives may be a few steps closer to nature than what he's used to receiving at the super market. I did the biggest Yelper no-no... not Yelping this place before going there to eat. Now, seeing there are only 3 reviews and ALL of them only getting fresh poultry to go, I should've known better than to try to have their cooked chicken for lunch. I ignored the signs all around. 1st clue that this was not going to be a good experience - a co-worker told me she had stopped by a while back to grab the "lunch special" they used to advertise with signs on the street (this is what got me wanting to go too - I had never had freshly butchered chicken and this place was my chance!). She said the smell was so bad, that she couldn't even go in. I figured, hey, I've been to Asian markets where the smell was raunch but could tolerate it. How much worse could it be? When we got there, yeah, the smell was pretty bad. I'd say worse than your average Asian market. It smelled of literally rotting carcass innards. One step in, and I started breathing through my mouth. That was the clue #2. 3rd clue? The woman behind the counter seemed kind of surprised to see us. I got the feeling she wasn't used to folks walking in during their lunch break. Looking at their menu board I was surprised to see Middle Eastern food - everything outside the building was Spanish but inside it was obvious that it was Middle Eastern owned. We saw the chicken on the rotisserie and it looked okay. My co-worker and I decided to play it safe and ordered the half chicken with sides. I saw the woman who was getting our food put the half chicken in a bag (this was the 4th clue). We did say to go, but the picture on the menu said it came with sides. We clarified that we wanted the sides, so she proceeded to take the chicken out of the bag and put it in a styrofoam container (I'm guessing now that if people DO eat the cooked chicken from there, that's all they eat, not the sides). She went over to the counter where the rice and beans were. The rice looked like it was about 5 days old - hardening under the heat lamp. The beans had that coating over it that said it hadn't been touched since it was put there, whenever that was. When we got back to the office to eat our meal, we were skeptical to say the least given our experience thus far. Conclusion? The chicken was okay - if it was freshly butchered (we had doubts about that given the rice and beans situation), I couldn't tell. It tasted like regular seasoned chicken, albeit on the salty side. We were completely right about the rice and beans. The rice reverted back to it's raw state it was so hard. The beans were extremely salty!! No seriously, I think after I ate the chicken (that's all I ate), my body went into some sort of salt overload. I was SO thirsty after and felt a little light headed. I'm never going to eat here again. The kicker - I found a cut up piece of plastic in my chicken - the kind you find that binds cables together. I have a feeling it's what they used to secure the chicken to the spit. Still, it shouldn't be in my to-go box. Yes, I saw it and continue to eat. Sad huh? I was hungry, okay? read more

Ummm..yea... this place has no cooked food to order. Dont know whats up with the menu picture, or free soda with checkin nonsense.. but this is a straight butcher. Nice to look for parking for 15 min and hike 4 blocks to find this out. read more

Everything is always top quality and the customer service is by far some of the best I have had at a butcher. Their recommendation are always on point and they even will provide you ice packs on request for your freezer bag if you are going to be doing some shopping or have a decent drive back home. I love that they are well knowledgeable about all the products and take the time if you ask to explain the differences in the meats and how they should be cooked for the best experience. If you are ever by the grove or farmers market ask for Brandon (likes to go by B) or Byron they are always willing to help and make sure you are more than satisfied with your purchase. The great thing about them is that they are father (Byron) and son (Brandon) which means they are passing down the skill set and knowledge regarding butchery and meats. If you are in the area or have the means to travel I definitely recommend supporting this establishment at least for your ultra premium, exotic, or seasonal meats.

Everything is fresh, flavorful, and ready for the grill, which makes entertaining family and friends so much easier. This weekend we had family visiting from out of state, and one thing they always say they miss is the authentic Mexican flavors. As soon as the meat hit the grill, everyone gathered around. The aroma alone had people asking when dinner would be ready, and after the first bite, there wasn't much talking just people going back for seconds. What really stands out about Mr. Meats is the consistency. Every visit, the prepared meats are fresh, high quality, and cook up tender and juicy with incredible flavor. You can tell they care about what they're selling, and it shows in the final product. Whether you're planning a family BBQ, a birthday, or just a relaxing Sunday cookout, Mr. Meats is a place I can confidently recommend.

Recently, I saw a review about an incident involving a customer and one of the people who work here, so I feel compelled to speak up. If you come across any negative review about anyone here at the bar, I can confidently say it does not reflect the people I--and many others--have experienced. In all my visits, I've never once seen her or the staff handle anything with anything less than professionalism and kindness. As a patron, one of the main reasons I keep coming back to Maple Block is because of the people. The staff creates such a welcoming, positive atmosphere, which really stands out--especially in an area where you can occasionally encounter challenging situations. Take any negative reviews with a grain of salt and urge you to go see for yourself!!!! I wish they could have put up a sign of some sort to let everyone know they ran out. However, the place itself was nice, and I did end up getting a latte. Although the latte was good, I don't see myself coming back due to the long wait and them being prone to running out of goods.
