Came here for the first time and let me tell you the food is phenomenal! My husband and I were unsure of where to eat while driving through and decided to come here. So I love their food don't get me wrong butttt the 1 star is for their dessert . I asked for flan and she claims she only had 2 left n this is what she came out with ! No one who's familiar with this dessert will believe this is a flan , first off it's the wrong color , the wroooong texture lol and it definitely tasted like a burnt Budin ..... so I could only give one star I wanted to give zero stars for their dessert ! I've been a loyal customer of La Garita's (LG) since 2006. Their food has always been reasonably priced and impeccably prepared. All the menu items were readily available. Service was always friendly and detail oriented. In a nutshell, I'd always walk away from LG with a small piece of home in my heart, a satisfied tummy and a smile. Unfortunately, 2024 seems different for LG. Pernil is never available. It's frustrating because we would go to LG just for that menu item. My pork chops were thrown in a deep fryer; the cook fried the chops until they were dry and overdone. Most unappetizing. My date's churasco was like rubber. HINT- skirt steak comes with a thick silver skin membrane that must be removed before attempting to cook this cut of beef. My gentleman friend expressed his difficulty chewing the meat. Lastly, the beef empanadas were not cooked thoroughly. The empanadas had b en frozen and weren't cooked properly. This place is sad let down, from the amazing place it once was. Not pleased, not worth the money and not going back. read more

I traveled across the country coming from New Jersey. Decided to come here with my parents for lunch since we were tired and starving. Very friendly staff. And the food was excellent. Some of the best Puerto Rican food I have had in a very long time. Even better than some places in Puerto Rico. 10/10 HIGHLY recommend. THEIR FOOD IS AMAZING!!!! I haven't had mofongo THIS FIRE since I was last in Puerto Rico. I got the dufongo to be exact and it was great. Everything fresh. Great prices. The owner Victor was so nice and so was our waitress. Great atmosphere great food. OH and they have Malta India AND kola champagne. So authentic. I was in love. And the alcapurrias weren't overly greasy like many places make them I swear I would of bought more if My friends and I weren't already so full! read more

Brought our family there. 3 out of 5 meals were brought out wrong. Food def wasn't an authentic Puerto Rican taste at all. We won't be back. I don't recommend. PR rice tasted really bad. Too much tomato paste and salt. Fried fish was way too salty. read more

I use to eat their food all the time and it was great but the past three times that I order from door dash I either puke about 30 minutes afterwards or have diarrhea.. last night I ate the pork bites and I have been in bathroom nonstop since a little after eating their food.. I don't like writing bad reviews but when it's affecting my health this bad I have to intervene in order to protect other people as well! hopefully they do something about the hygienic aspect the food must've developed bacteria or they didn't clean the meat with lime something's not right and needs to be addressed. read more

This place is amazing! Food is great! Service could not be better! I totally recommend this to anyone, of you have not tried Puertorican food this is the place to come, you will not be disappointed! This restaurant has been my place away from home. Service is excellent and the food delicious. Authentic PR food. My staple was the combination of churrasco/shrimp or carne frita/shrimp with arroz con gandules and tostones. 6 months in the area so it was my place to stop after church. I needed some catering done for my son's rehearsal dinner and I'm so glad that I changed my mind and went to them rather than the Puerto Rican/grocery store. Late lunch today at La Garita. One table was occupied, the rest of the place was empty. I had to wait and wait for someone to take my order. A lot pricier than the last time I ate there. I ordered the beef enchilada plate with rice and beans. Everything was flavorless and way too salty. Left most of it on my plate. Had to wait and wait at the counter to pay. So disappointed. The last time I ate there the service and food were excellent and I raved about it. Don't know if I'll be back. It's close to where I live but I would be willing to drive further to get better food and service. read more

I am Puerto Rican and Mexican. It's easy to find Mexican food. But not P.R. Food. So when I found this I was excited. The good is very good. I got a virgin pina colada. Hubby got tea. We ordered sweet fried plantanios. Perfect. Then shirmp with this fried thing that looked like a small cupcake that I think is plantino. And Puerto Rican.rice with pigeon peas. The reaturant has pictures that bring this place a homey feeling. I am very happy. read more

My first time at La Garita: Small little restaurant with good service. My meal was a mixed bag but mostly good. I guess I'll start with the negative first, my yellow rice was a bit salty but still edible. And also the restaurant was very hot inside the owner tried to accommodate us with fans but when its 100 degrees outside that's just not going to cut it...back to the food though. My mufongo was really good and the dipping saucue that came with it was tasty little spicy with a garlic kick. I had a few plantians (sweet)they where cooked fresh and where also very good large portions of these came as a side. And my main dish was "Pernil" which was roasted pulled pork and rice and beans. As mentioned the rice was salty, but beans where cooked well and the roasted pork had good flavor and was tender (cant believe i just used that word). Nice place i think i would get food to go if i ever went back and i would get the same dish. read more

If you need real Puerto Rican food from a real hole in the wall joint, La Garita is among the few that can be found around Killeen. The mofongo (plaintain) dishes will fill you up and can't be found anywhere else around here. I like the simple roast chicken/rice/beans combo, can't beat it for the price and wholesomeness. You ain't gonna get any reheated fast food here, the kitchen in back is hopping. Owner is a friendly guy. Look for the sign with a castle tower on it on the north of Rancier. Real food, no nonsense, the way it always oughta be. read more

This place advertises the biggest burrito in Killeen, and they back up that claim. The thing was pretty big. Not wrapped in aluminum foil like i like, in fact, it was more like a chimmichanga than anything, but it was pretty good nevertheless. The people are extremely friendly. I would totally go here again. Beware, they don't take cards of any kind. read more

Been patronizing this location for many years and different mgmt. The food quality has never changed. The food is excellent. Authentic and very tasty! The decor has changed and while it seems a little dated the food or service has not stopped being great. I recommend the specials when you can get them. I prefer the breaded fish, arroz con gandules, and tostones. The imported sodas are a treat and the staff is pleasant. They take cards too something they didn't in the past. Come hungry leave satisifed. read more

I used come here a while back and since I was in the area I decided to stop in again. Bad idea!! This place has gone down hill in service and food service, staff, I don't want an enchilada or chips and salsa in a Puerto Rican restaurant! Also the music really!!! Even the music! What happened to the salsa, merengue, bachata. That good Caribbean music. Sad to say that I won't be coming back. I wanted to feel like I was back on the island, not in little Mexico. Nothing against Mexican food or music but damn!! This is a Puerto Rican restaurant.... Or at least it used to be! read more

I'm Dominican, so I do know a lot about what PR food suppose to taste like...have a lot of friends and family that are from PR or live in PR. I had the Pernil last Saturday 9-10-11 and it was just like my mama makes! They have a variety of foods, Tex-mex, Caribbean/ Latin foods. The service was great and i would recommend it to anyone who wants authentic Puerto Rican foods or any Dominicans that are looking for meals that are like home. I will go again, when I'm in town. The prices are a bit high but worth every penny. They DO take cards now....by the way. Gracias read more

Food was good, service was friendly. I ordered the carne De cerdo con salsa platter. The rice and beans were delicious, the pork was a little dry but the sauce was excellent. I also ordered the mofongo solo, if you like tostones you'll love it, I'm not a big fan. It gets pretty busy so be ready for a long wait. Overall not bad, next time I'll try their famous burritos. read more

Because my "second family" is Cuban and I have a great affinity for all things Cuban (not just the…read morecigars and the rums) I always have a complex about non-Cubans preparing Cuban like things. There is even a Seinfeld episode on point about this with the Dominicans rolling the crepes. If you don't believe me compare a Romeo y Julieta (DR) to a real one, or any of the other cigar companies that have a DR factory with non-Cuban torcedores to one from the motherland. With the limited reviews of this joint on yelp I was having to read between the lines that the ladies preparing the food were probably not authentic Cubans. But based on the very favorable four to five star reviews of the Cuban sandwich from other yelpers, they seemed to know how to put in work on the gentlesir's favourite panini type class of sandwich so I was sold on giving it the olde "college try" since the prices seemed quite reasonable and I needed to submit receipts for travel reimbursement to my organization that were not handwritten. Just a note for yelpers - the "grocery store" part of the business is actually called Killeen Nutritional Center which has a separate yelp business page and this is the page for the to-go restaurant portion of the biz. I wandered around there for several minutes trying to find the sammich counter until I realized I was at the deli (in the grocery store) and the girl behind the deli counter was actively ignoring me. So I spotted the door behind the registers the other way and walked into the sammich place I wanted to be in. They could really use a sign or something, or workers that will acknowledge your existence and direct you appropriately. I actually know some spanglish so I know enough to be helpful asking where ya boy can obtain his emparedado. There is "prepared food" cafeteria style that most people dining in seemed to be getting so there is a line for that. However if you are gentlesir in for a sammich then you go straight to the register to order it there, pay for it, then you go wait for it to come out. There are also people buying the pastries out of the case at the register which are neither sammiches nor prepared cafeteria style take out, so there is some light confusion and at one time there appeared to be three separate lines of people trying to get it in at the one girl working the one register at the counter. The Cuban comes with Swiss cheese, pork, ham, mustard, pickle, lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo. Or if you are bi-curious: el cubano (es una balleza tambien) tiene queso suizo, pernil, jamon, mostaza, pepinillo, lechuga, tomate, cebolla, y mayonesa. Homey costs $3.35. You read that right. This is not the best Cuban I have ever had if we are being honest. It was not prepared by authentic Cubans, but they never represented that they were authentic Cubans so we have to temper expectations accordingly and especially at this price point. I have to review the sammich in accord with Antone's last non-chain outpost in the Med Centre who also was not Cuban, but they mastered the non-Cuban art of making Cuban food. I am pretty sure my order ticket they put in to the kitchen said something along the lines of me being a gringo, possibly a puta also but I will never know even though I always assume this is being said behind my back and the main reason why I learned spanglish. This thing came with a Shania Twain sized heaping of mayo. So much mayo. Goddammit I don't even like mayo, that racist stereotype has to end. Meanwhile I love mustard and that was nearly nonexistent. I also love pickles and there was little pickle to speak of. If I knew they were going to go HAM on the mayo I would have just told them to hold it entirely and slide some pickle magic into the sammich in its place - but I would have to be careful that nothing got lost in translation since sliding a pickle into something is a double entendre which we snuck past the censors, just like that lemon party joke. So that is my most useful tip I can give you for your visit, tell them to hold the mayo unless you want six pounds of it on your sammich just ruining everything and your good time. THAT IS NOT HOW A CUBANO IS SUPPOSED TO GO. The meats were extremely dry and I suppose the giant dosing of mayo was an effort to mask that desert dryness, which was exquisitely unsuccessful on me but may have worked its charm better on other diners. I put the sammich on par with Subway quality at best (especially the underwhelming tomato and lettuce quality) but not customizable at your own instruction as Subway is, so you don't need to take any responsibility for the creation of this monstrosity. This was my worst meal on my road trip through this area. However, I am still rewarding them with a three star yelp review (an #upgrayedd of stars taking into account the totality of the circumstances beyond the disappointing sammich) since unlike KMB they printed me a proper receipt I could actually use for reimbursement from my organization.

I called the restaurant 4 times asking for a manager and got hung up on every time. I clocked out and drove back to the restaurant with the sandwich. I asked for a manager and the dark haired lady behind the counter barely let me tell her the issue before she took the bag with the sandwich and went into the kitchen. She came back out with cooks following her. I don't speak fluent Spanish but I do understand it. The cooks were calling me a liar, saying it was impossible and that I should eat at home. The "manager" told another lady at the counter with red hair to refund ONLY one sandwich. I was not going to accept that when I couldn't eat any of the food I purchased after that discovery. I asked for the head manager/"her boss" and after a while, I got the right person who heard me and refunded both of my orders. Regardless, I will never come back here. I know a lot of people who come here including soldiers and I'll be sure to spread the word. My whole experience was disgusting and unacceptable including the service.

I'm writing this after the worst service we've experienced--twice in 8-9 days. Our waiter (name tag "Irving") didn't listen. We both had to repeat drink orders. We each asked for "no rim," he repeated "no rim," then asked if we wanted salt or sugar on the rim. Again, we said "no rim." I asked if the jalapeños were "very fresh"--meaning spicy. He became oddly hostile, repeating "it's fresh, it's fresh!" so aggressively I couldn't even request it be strained. I said never mind and asked for water; my husband did the same. The waiter stared and said, "So you just want WATER?" We said yes. He walked off. We waited while others were served. No water, no order taken. We flagged someone (not actually a waitress, as we later learned) and simply asked for our water, stating we hadn't been served yet. After more waiting, Irving returned, set down water, and said, "So you have a problem with my service and want to talk to the manager?" We were confused. He repeated, "You complained about my service and want to talk to the manger. You want me to get the manager?" That's not what we said--we only asked for water and noted we hadn't ordered yet. He then argued again about the jalapeños. At that point I said, "I NOW want to see the manager--I didn't before, but now? I do!" He kept arguing and claimed, "Everything is recorded here. The conversation is recorded". He even looked up as if pointing to a device. I said, "Really? Then good! Go get the manager! I want this 'recording' replayed! I want to hear i!" I also told him arguing with customers is bad service. He stood there until I repeated, "Go get the manager! I want to hear the recording". No manager ever came. A waitress named Jermina stepped in, recognized us as regulars, and took over. I told her I'd tip her since she was helping us. She was great, understood the jalapeño request immediately, and provided good service. We eventually ordered drinks, ate, and asked for a to-go cup. Later, we realized the to-go drink was missing. We returned, and they claimed they tossed it because "the ice was melting." That didn't make sense, and no refund was offered. Fine--but don't lie. Also, the earlier person we flagged was not waitstaff and apparently told Irving we complained. We've noticed high staff turnover. While that's common in restaurants, this place seems above average. There are a few good servers, but only maybe 3-4, and we never know when they're working. We've had more bad than good experiences. Aside from queso and margaritas, most menu items are mediocre, and breakfast is outright bad. Orders are often wrong. One jalapeño margarita we took home was so spicy it burned my mouth and throat. A manager once offered to remake it--but only if we came back (we live 20 minutes away). Did I mention the manager never came to our table? My advice: don't dine in unless you're willing to risk poor service. There are better Mexican restaurants in Copperas Cove. We gave this place plenty of chances, but the service is consistently lacking--servers don't listen, and some argue with customers. Two stars: one for queso, one for jalapeño margaritas. UPDATE: just saw the response from the owner. We NEVER were rude, it was actually the other way around as we were being treated rudely by "Irving". Then to receive a message from him within yelp? Seriously? He's got the attitude problem. And since you're willing to back bad customer service on your "team" part, we will never eat at, or recommend, your restaurant again. The manager never showed up, and "Irving" did indeed say the conversation was being recorded. I guess he lied to you and stated he never said that. And his responding to me privately here on yelp just goes to prove you've got a person with a major chip on his shoulder. It's all good! Good luck. I pray your business continues to do well as I would never want to wish anything negative on anyone. I do wish "Irving" would learn from this. Or maybe it's that he is a family member and that is why he feels he can behave that way and why you are backing a liar and person with a major attitude? Yup! I'm going with that!
