La Gaviota fucked up Melissa K. and Kevin L.'s wedding rehearsal dinner. They were entirely in the wrong and never owned up to it, blaming everyone but themselves for their astonishing incompetence.
Mel and Kevin reserved their rehearsal dinner months in advance, communicating with the manager and his sister over email. They received written confirmation of their reservation, and a month before the dinner, all of us guests sent over our entrée orders.
It seemed reasonable to assume that the restaurant would be ready for us. Instead, we showed up at the appointed time and La Gaviota was hosting an entirely different party in the exact space Mel and Kevin had reserved.
Turns out that somewhere in the communications between the bride and groom and the manager and his sister, La Gaviota had lost our reservation. The manager insisted they never confirmed until Kevin found the confirmation email, and then the manager's sister sent a defensive, unapologetic email once again trying to push blame away from the restaurant and toward the people getting married. It was an extraordinary shit show.
We still needed to eat, with a group of like 25-30 people, and La Gaviota did reluctantly agree to serve us. There were empty tables available, so we occupied them. Not ideal, as the plan had been to take over the one long table on the patio, but at least we were able to sit and be fed.
Also not ideal--the staff was busy serving the other party, so we were mostly taken care of by Mel and Kevin's wedding coordinators with occasional assists from wait staff, the best man, and the groom himself. (This was, of course, not the staff's fault at all.) It would've been nice if the manager acted anything but inconvenienced by the whole thing. Honestly, it would have made a huge difference if he owned up to the mistake and tried to make us feel welcome and accommodated--we were, after all, celebrating a pretty big fucking special occasion. Also, if any situation called for some freebies or a discount on the bill, this wouldn't have been it, but we neither expected nor received any such thing.
Other than the mess of the lost reservation, I guess La Gaviota was a decent restaurant. The dining area was pleasant, all the tables on a large patio looking out over the beach. The cocktails looked good, and I enjoyed my non-alcoholic mango smoothie and lemonade with berries. The food was solid. We shared a bunch of appetizers, and they were all good: guac, a few kinds of tacos, and queso loaded with shrimp and octopus. I got the grilled octopus for my entrée, which came with vegetables and chimichurri. It was mostly tasty, with a flavorful sauce, but some bits were quite slimy. My husband's "citrus fishing" (not sure what that translates from/to) was a piece of fish, who knows what kind, with grilled shrimp, citrus butter, garlic, leek, rice, and steamed vegetables. The shrimp were really good, the best thing I tried at La Gaviota, but the whole entrée showed up like half an hour after all the others, when most people were done eating. We had to skip dessert to make it back to our hotel in time for welcome drinks--at least one child was unhappy about this, but we just wanted to get the hell out of La Gaviota.
Obviously, this was an extreme situation, and it's entirely possible that you can come to this restaurant and have a nice meal in front of the ocean. That said, I can't recommend La Gaviota. The management is disorganized and seems to cover for its incompetence by brazenly disowning fault and blaming the customer. Even if all you want is good food with a view, you can find better (Mar y Cielo and La Ceniza come to mind) along the same beach. read more
