Tallarin Saltado de Pollo - basically chicken lo mein, but with Peruvian spices. HEAPING portion. This was legit a 2 lb. tray.

Sometimes you just have to go out on a whim and order from places that wouldn't normally even be on your radar. That was the case with La Granja Azul. That's how I'm going to refer to it for the rest of this review. The actual name is super long and I don't think I can even pronounce it correctly. I was trying to tell someone about this place and I couldn't even remember the name. Maybe I'll just call it "Azul" from here on out? It's short and sweet. Azul really surprised me. First off, it serves Peruvian food, and I didn't exactly know what that entailed. Even after browsing the menu, everything was really foreign to me. There was a whole section titled: "Tallarines (spaghetti)." Ok... ? Another section was a little more familiar - "Arroz (Rice)." So I know spaghetti. I know rice. But Peruvian style? All right, screw it, let's just go for it. When my order arrived, it was not at all what I expected. It was straight up lo mein and fried rice, just as you'd get from a Chinese restaurant. After doing a little research, I found that there is a whole culinary tradition known as "Chifa," which is essentially Chinese-Peruvian fusion. A great influx of Chinese immigrants moved to the western South American country in the late 19th and 20th centuries and ever since then, Chifa cuisine has become one of the most popular types of food in Peru. The beauty of the fusion lies in the spices. So while you may get a heaping portion of traditional lo mein noodles, the vegetables and BBQ/rotisserie meats will be infused with cumin, coriander, turmeric, clove, nutmeg, and anise (among others). It all comes together to form a unique marriage of flavors. Portions here are really spectacular. At the price point of $12, I thought I was going to get an individual portion. But nope, each order is an entire 2+ lb. tray, each one capable of serving at least 2-3 people. It ends up being an incredible value. I'm definitely going to try Azul again. The "Saltado" (Sautéed dishes) sound particularly good. This is another fusion dish that combines beef or seafood with tomatoes, onions, and fries. Yes, fries. It's one of Peru's national dishes. This is no doubt one of the more unique dining establishments in Reading. As of this review, they are open 12 hours per day from 10 AM to 10 PM seven days a week and will deliver to your door via Ubereats, Doordash, and Postmates.

We fell on love with Peruvian chicken from Sardi's but closest one is over an hour away.
