Shrimp Tacos
Elizabeth H.

Having many words and no words, I write this review..... First off, those are $15 shrimp tacos!!! Honestly pathetic. No sides, no accompaniments. Blah! My boyfriend and I decided to try a new to us Mexican restaurant, through Delivery Dudes. We are absolute advocates and supporters of small, local business so I suggested La Abuela. Mind you I live about 6 blocks away and the food arrived lukewarm. So I ordered the shrimp tacos, which were just sad. We ordered the guacamole, which was tasty, chunky and accompanied by a good helping of chips. But my boyfriend's chicken burrito....mediocre, given with about 2 tbsp. side of refried beans and emaciated pico (other picture). With our dinner, I MADE additional beans and queso. Why am I making more food with my paid order that should already be satisfying??? I certainly hope that this was just a bad experience for La Abuela and not their standard. Because this food was just embarrassing.

We went here for a late takeout dinner on a weeknight and we were the only people in the restaurant. Since we ordered and waited, we decided to get chips and quac while we waited. It was served in a stone bowl and was delicious. I got the Carnitas platter which was really well cooked, not too greasy, and travelled well. They had a HUGE juice menu on the chalkboard on the wall. I'm not sure why it took me so long to find this place but I will be back to try their tacos/ burritos!

Ridiculously great food. Like, unbelievably flavorful, excellent presentation, and a huge variety in the menu. Super friendly. Place rocks. If you're in the area looking for authentic Mexican, you owe it to yourself to visit this place.

Queso Fundido al Chipotle - a rare miss. Hard as a rock. And the flavors just didn't really come together.

There are so many great Mexican restaurants in Reading that I sometimes don't even realize when a new one pops up right under my nose. That was the case with La Abuela. It's been open for, oh, five months now or thereabouts? And I literally drive by it every day on my way to work. My first two visits have been in the past three weeks. Better late than never, eh? Not a lot of fanfare here - and it certainly ain't fancy - but I've talked to people who have 1.) traveled to Mexico, and 2.) have roots in Mexico. Everyone agrees, this place is the real deal. So no, it's not Chi-Chi's or On the Border or any other Mexican chain with all that extra "Mexican" flair. This place gets right to the point with authentic Mexican classics. Now, I know I'm going to sound like an idiot making the above statement and then posting a picture of fried ice cream (which I realize is totally NOT an authentic Mexican dessert), but, erhm, I suppose some exceptions can be made. After all, General Tso's is def not a Chinese dish, but you see it at every Chinese restaurant. It's a fan favorite among us gringos, so I can understand why it's on the menu. If you stick with the classics, you can't go wrong. The enchiladas, burritos, tacos, flautas and soups are all packed with fresh ingredients that make each and every bite a treat. Most of the best Mexican restaurants are in downtown Reading, so it's nice to have this alternative on the outskirts of the city. Just beware of the Queso Fundido al Chipotle. The menu describes it as "A fondue of chihuahua cheese and lump crab meat topped with our chipotle sauce and our mango pico de gallo." Sounds amazing, right? Well, it comes out as a congealed mess. It's a dip, yet you literally can't "dip" anything in it. Anything you would attempt to dip in it would break off.. the cheese was so hard and thick that nothing could stand up to its clay-like consistency.

I agree with other Yelpers that this is a mom and pop small comfortable operation and a true gem for West Reading. My family and I received very attentive and friendly service. The water glasses and sodas were always topped off or refilled. Chilled mugs were provided for our BYOB beer. We were started with complementary warm crisp chips and salsa. Both excellent. Refilled often. The guacamole was delicious and generous in size. My tacos de Pollo were filled with tender tasty chicken accompanied by salsa and refried beans. My son in law loved his Huevos Rancheros. The grandkids had very tasty chicken nuggets and fries and my grandsons beef tacos were gobbled up. We even got a delicious churro plate on the house. Loved everything and most certainly be back.

Chorichicken to go

This is one of those experiences that was almost great but a few weird things happened and so it wasn't very satisfying. Stopped in for a take-out lunch on a Friday afternoon, and the ordering process was fine, the counterperson was helpful. There's a special lunch menu that seemed to be a good deal: ordered an appetizer and a lunch dish. Went to the cool record store across the street, then came back 20-minutes later to pick-up and pay. Waiting at the counter, two receipts were laying on the counter- one was mine. But the numbers didn't look right. I asked the helper about it and she said that the meal was put in as 'full-size' not lunch. Asking what was the difference, I was told there'd be more food than the 'lunch version'. If I wanted the lunch deal, the cook would probably just take some of the food out of the box. Not wanting to cause any extra work, I said it was fine and I'll take the full order and pay the extra money (60% higher than the lunch price). So I was already Splurging in ordering a $18 lunch, but ended up spending $25+ Getting the food out to the car, I dug in for a bite before even leaving the parking lot. The flautas were good, the salsas both tasty. Opening the big meal, I was immediately underwhelmed by the size of the servings. The rice and beans were meager, and that's the cheap part...other places load up on those. Opening the beans to mix with the rice, there were hardly any beans- it was all the brown gravy and maybe a dozen black beans in the 3-ounce serving. The entree was equally disappointing (size-wise), although it looked really good. For the 60% up-charge, I thought there'd be a nice pile of meat and veggies- maybe enough to have leftovers. Not so. Two very small chicken breasts and a few ounces of chorizo, plus a few nice pieces of pepper and onion. I have to say the dish was good, but i am hoping that the cook made a lunch portion even though I was charged for the dinner version. If that was the dinner version, it was a rip-off compared to most other Latin restaurants that I have been to; and that's a lot! So being overcharged at the counter, then not getting the appropriate amount of food, (although tasty), it just added up to a bad deal.

Guacamole. Wish it was filled all the way up. Was delicious though.

My boyfriend and I have ordered the carnita burrito a few times now and we have enjoyed the food very much!! There is a lot of pork in the burrito and it has excellent flavor. The guacamole tastes fantastic but the serving size was questionable the last time I ordered take out... I wish they would fill the guacamole container all the way up. Other than that I recommend it.

Great food. Good sized servings. Friendly service. Plenty of vegetarian options! Recommended.

The fajitas were delicious!

The food was good but the service was excellent! Our server was very friendly and made great recommendations. The only drawback with the lighting. The restaurant was very dimly lit. We were seated at it back corner table which made it difficult to see. Otherwise we had a pleasant experience. I am likely to visit again.

The interior dining area is relatively small and clean, though I would not recommend it for large gatherings. I thoroughly enjoyed the "get that corn outta my face" and was thankful to have the option for it in a bowl (otherwise I wouldn't have tried it.) it was a unique blend of flavors and textures that had me questioning the first bite or two, but the more I ate it, the more I liked it. (If you get the bowl, I recommend stirring it up first to evenly distribute the ingredients.) Service was prompt and courteous when they brought each of the meals to our table. This is a counter style establishment, so that was appreciated. The theme of the restaurant focuses on the Nacho Libre movie (menu items named after key movie points) and other movies focused on luchadores. It is unfortunate that the thumb wrestling rings never returned to the tables following Covid. This is a fun and laidback place to grab a quick bite. I love the quirky atmosphere and the delicious food. My recommendation would be to go during down times so you can sit and enjoy the atmosphere without the wait.
