He might be good at cutting hair for men, but not for women unless you want to spend $50 (without tip) for a typical Chinese style of thinning out your hair until it shapes your head like a light bulb. Yes, this is the Chinese definition of layering without volume. I would rather pay $100 in SF for a quality low-maintenance cut from a Korean stylist that gives my hair a style to frame my face appropriately even though I'm Chinese. It shows the skills of the stylist without a reliance on gimmicks. There is ample parking and shopping for food nearby in the plaza. The service is fine, but I probably wouldn't come back here since I've had better cuts. Plus, Barry isn't very social unless you initiate the conversation and carry it. read more

Since Amy has been dealing with my husband's hair for years (and she has been doing a great job), I just decided to give it a try recently. She did the color for my hair in summer and it was done beautifully. She also gave me a quick trim of my hair so that my hair was more manageable for my wedding day. I remembered my hairstylist on the wedding day even complimented on my hair (the hairstylist kept on saying how the trim made her job easier to make the updo.) And after the wedding, she gave me a great haircut that I got so many compliments! She ensured that the hairstyle works with the shape of my face and the natural curls of my hair. She's very knowledgeable about hair. It's not easy for someone with natural curly hair to keep a shoulder-length bob hairstyle to look good (when I got those in the past, the hair usually flipped out/in uncontrollably after a week). But this time I got the perfect cut - she managed to give me a style that an easy 3 minutes blow-dry in the morning will put my hair into perfect place! I think the price is reasonable (considering how much the salons in SF J-Town charging for). And since I don't have to drive an hour to SF and pay for parking - I'm OK with the price. This is not a place I will make a special trip from SF. But this is a good alternative for those who are looking for Asian salons that deliver very good results without the drive. :) read more

Was pretty scary because I chose to have a hair cut two days before a high school reunion with a stylist that I have not worked with before. Nana was available when I walked in and have to say today is my lucky day. She is patient and completely understand the result that I want to achieve. After over one hour of trimming there was barely any hair on the floor, which is the result that I am looking for - a very subtle change. Very subtle. Decades of professional experiences as a hairstylist gave him this great skill to handle so many different hair styles in a proper manner. While Johnson is perhaps a little cool there, his wife Lisa is just so nice and welcoming that it's always easy to talk to her a lot like a friend. Amy is another hair stylist working there, she is also very skillful as said in other comments. If there is anything that makes me a little concerned, I think it is the price. The price used to be fair I think, given the quality of their profession. But now honestly it's a little higher for me...That's mainly why I did not go there as often as before. I feel this place is over priced and.does not match the quality of their service. When I called in for estimate of the coloring and haircut, the coloring part was $95. When everything was done they first told me that the Coloring was 130 dollars instead of 95 because any hair that's longer over ear length will be 130. They also try to sell me two of their hair products which are both very pricey, and after I declined that they said they need to charge a tip of 15% and my final bill was $200 for a haircut and coloring and my hair is barely below my shoulders after the cut. They did do a rough cut before the coloring but it seems to me that the charge the price according to my hair length before the cut. After the coloring I feel that the hair on the top of my head is somewhat of a lighter color than the those below my shoulder, which is an inconsistency I did not notice with my previous coloring experiences. Also during the process my hair often gets pulled and my ears get scratched by the steel teethed combs and that really hurt. Would not recommend this place. read more

Barry, from La Gugu, used to cut my hair all the time when I used to live in the area. Unfortunately, I stopped going to him after I went away for school and then I found a more conveniently located salon to go to. Barry is the 'Director' at La Gugu, which pretty much means he is the owner. His hair cuts cost about $70 and up, depending on hair type and style. I used to get the typical long-layer, nothing too extreme and it was about $65. He was extremely meticulous and careful. The only gripe I have is that he thinned my hair a little bit too much sometimes. Other than that, he's great for Japanese/Korean-style hair cuts. read more

Barry with his magnificent Edward Scissorhands style - a dry cut with hair flying everywhere and there is this other guy that stands there and watches Barry work, which is a bit creepy, but he makes up for it when he washes your hair and gives you one of the best scalp massages I have had outside of Asia. I didn't even have to direct Barry he did what he does and gave me the uber sexy hair that I have always wanted. They may come at you with offers of perms and extensions, if that is your thing then go for it. They will give you that funkay asian style that you strive for.
