My current favorite Peruvian restaurant in Houston. The food was delicious and not overly salty and the Arroz Chaufa was very tasty. It is also the first time I had Tiger's milk from a not a real tiger, a joke as the dish is called Leche De Tigre, but the food is really just A delicious citrus-based mixture of liquefied fish, garlic aji pepper, Peruvian choclo corn, cancha and crispy sweet potato strings. Upon entering, there is a funny smell to the place. It looks old and outdated with minimal lighting. It's as if the restaurant has not been well kept. The restaurant could use an update to the place to attract more clientele. While we went on a Friday night and with so much space and being they are on a main road, expected more traffic in. The service was great however. Our waitress was very attentive refilling our cups and asking if we needed anything else. My husband ordered the ceviche de camarón con mango. It was very refreshing and tasted fresh. I ordered the empanadas de res that came with a yellow sauce that's was not too spicy. The stuffing was minced beef with olives, peppers and onion. The empanadas were a bit burnt on the outside. The taste was ok. The seco de res plate was very delicious. Favorite part was the beans mixed in with the beef stew that was a nice flavorful touch. First time having Peruvian food & was not disappointed! Started out with a chicken tamel and the chicha morada (purple corn drink) really enjoyed both. The chicha morada is served with pears in it and is kind of sweet but not too much. The chips are served with a green sauce & a spicy sauce & are super tasty! For entree I had basically a beef stew served with rice and red onions. The beef was super tender and overall I was impressed. My friends dish had fried plantains which were really good. While driving around found this Peruvian spot and took a chance on it. My wife us Peruvian and I go to Peru a few times per year so I have tastes great food to compare. This place so far impressed us, we started with a normal drink by name of Chica Morada which was a great start. We then had Tamales which me and my wife started out with a Pork Tamale and Chicken Tamale, my neice tasted it and ordered her own. I was a bit confused by the chips at first but saw the sauces and was happy. Only gripe was green sauce wasn't the normal one I'm use to without that garlic taste. I got Cerviche Mixto, my wife got Lomo Saltado and my neice got Cerviche Naive. All was on point! We ended it with traditional Alfajordes and Arroz con Leche again we weren't disappointed. Food was great and the price was great too. I am coming back in a week before I leave to go back home. So if in the neighborhood go check it out. I'd driven by this place quite a few times when heading out to Windchimes or West Oaks, but had never stopped by until a friend of mine insisted we try it for dinner. Having found some Peruvian heritage of his own through a 23-and-Me test, I figured he was biased, but the place was actually pretty good. I went with the bistec a lo pobre, a small steak with plantains, rice, a fried egg, and avocado. I wasn't expecting much, but the food was surprisingly good. The meat was well seasoned, the egg was over-easy so it didn't turn into an absolute mess in the plate, and the pyramid of rice just made for the perfect photo op. The place was pretty empty when we swung by, so service was spectacular. I plan on going back and trying out this place again sometime soon. read more

The ceviche here is DELCIOUS! Relatively big portion for the price. The fish tastes fresh and firm, not fishy (already accounting for the cilantro ans lime juice). My favorite is the ceviche pescado con mango; the sweetness of the young, not too ripe mango pairs well with the sourness. I also highly recommend their Arroz Con Mariscos - flavors just burst in your mouth. The in-house sauce for rice is rich but not creamy which I like. The dish is also loaded with seafood. Their jalea peruana is also good - i ordered it on accident thinking it was dish featured on the menu cover, which actually was the Arroz con Mariscos (see! More reason to try that dish. It's featured!). Anyways, the batter is crispy and well-seasoned but the dish is oily for me. Still good, though if you like fry food. A lovely and homey restaurant! Alright, so anytime I eat cuisine from other Latin countries, my biased taste buds take over, because I grew up eating home made from scratch Mexican food. I mean the kind where seafood is involved too! So, there's gonna be high expectations and mamá bias. The place was dead when we came, but the service and food quality do not match with how not busy this place was. The place was clean, attractive, everything you'd want in a decent restaurant. The waiter was kind, patient, and gave great tips and advice on what to order. I ordered a paella like dish, that came with shrimp, clams, oysters, and just all around yummy seafood. The sauce, seafood, rice, and little details, created a melt in your mouth experience. All the flavors just went so well together and I was beyond full by the time I was done. My husband ordered something boring, but it was actually alright, though not as good as my plate. The bad thing about this place is there is no real online presence, aside from a few Google notes, and Yelp, so you can't peruse the menu ahead of time and without Yelp or in my case my friend wanting to celebrate his Peruvian heritage, you won't hear about this place. I would definitely return to eat here again, it's just a little bit out of my way. The seafood was stupendous and I think it would have even made my mother proud, because I sure liked it. My first stab at Peruvian food ever and I was quite nervous, because I didn't have a clue what Peruvian cuisine was like. At the recommendation of a co-worker, who in the past had spent a couple months on a short term assignment in Peru, eating Peruvian foods every single day, our whole team gathered at La Guitarra Con Sazon for lunch. After looking over the menu about 10 times, I finally decided to go with the first and what seems to be the most standard dish they had - the Lomo Saltado. This dish was described as wok sauteed beef tenderloin with tomatoes, onions, and garlic, served with french fries and rice. I requested for the beef to be medium rare as I placed my order, and boy did the chefs deliver. Each cube of beef was not only cooked to a perfect medium rare, but were so soft and tender. The sauce was uniquely flavorful but not overwhelming at all. What was surprising was that the sauce perfectly complimented the french fries that were tossed in with everything, and it brought out this deep potato flavor despite the crispiness of the fries being compromised (I usually hate soggy fries). And not to mention this dish was a combo of my favorite ingredients: meat, potatoes, onions, rice/carbs. Maybe the fact that it was a late lunch played a role in my appetite, or maybe not, but I went to town with this amazingly delicious dish. The second time I returned I wanted to see what Peruvian Fried Rice was. To my surpise, it tasted exactly like Chinese fried rice. My 2 gfriends and I came Sunday at 11:30am for my birthday brunch. I didn't like the complimentary chips and dip. Chips were thick and dip had no flavor. We ordered a pitcher of sangria with Peruvian wine, strong stuff but good $28. Service was great, sweet ladies. I ordered the mango ceviche and the bistec la pobre. Both were very fresh and tasty although I wasn't full. Small steak piece. I ordered their orange colored creamy hot sauce on the side. That was tasty. When we left at 1:30pm it was still dead. I can't say I'm exactly a fan of Peruvian food, but my dining partner is, and based on a recommendation he got, we ventured here on a Friday night. The interior was well, depressing. It was pretty barebones in terms of decor and atmosphere. During the entirety of the dinner, there were no other diners, a bad sign. The interior was dark and just overall not welcoming. The menu seemed to have just the right amount of options, so that was not disappointing. We ordered a few items to split. The seafood in the Ceviche Nativo could have been a bit more fresh. Considering how slow it was there during prime time, this does not surprise me. There were two types of Peruvian corn served with this dish, so that was fun to try. The Arroz con Moriscos was pretty delicious because the yellow rice in this dish was amazing! The seafood on the other hand could have been of better quality. The wok tossed Tallarin Saltado a la Criollo was tasty, especially the bed of green noodles. Presentation on all of the dishes was good, and everything looked wonderful. I have had Peruvian in several places in Houston, and in other parts of Texas - and this place is the ONLY Peruvian place I have tried that parallels with the great Peruvian food one can have in Lima or Miami. Some other Peruvian places in town may get great reviews for innovative dishes - but here, it's the classics that shine, the same classics that Lemon Tree, Latin Bites, and others have failed to deliver. And this is something that has bothered me - how can you deliver in providing complicated, new "fusion" dishes when you cannot provide great versions of simple, basic dishes every Peruvian love? When I came here in the weekday evening, it wasn't very busy - but hopefully that'll change once word of mouth spreads. I was happy to see that they had the basics covered in their menu - lomo saltado, check. pescado sudado, check. pescado a lo macho, check. aji gallina, check. chaufa, check. anticuchos, check. causas, check. and ceviche, -duh- (check). Seeing so many things in the menu that I loved, I had a hard time choosing - so I asked requested for them to make a sampling plate (called a "bandeja" here, big enough for two people), a large plate with several dishes in small sizes. This is pretty typical in Peruvian restaurants in Miami, where tasting or sample plates are pretty much commonly offered, and usually they're not in the menu. Additionally, I did not see shrimp and avocado causa, which I like a lot and had often in Miami. They were able to make a crab and avocado causa, and it worked perfectly. So in the plate, I had the following: aji gallina (shredded chicken in yellow pepper sauce), ceviche, chaufa (Peruvian-Chinese fried rice), anticuchos (beef hearts on skewers), and causa (crab & avocado filled mashed potato with yellow pepper sauce (huacaina)). And everything was... absolutely... perfect! My dining companion also loved the every single dish and was impressed with the new flavors (since he never had Peruvian) except for the chaufa because it's too familiar to him (he's Asian). The only thing that may not be perfect is that when I came here, they did not have a liquor license, so they were not able to offer pisco sours in their menu. However, they made one for me, free of charge, upon request - and it complemented the meal perfectly! I hope they will be able to offer it regularly sometime soon! And the price was more than fair for everything - I spent around $40 for the sampling plate and it was a great decision. I came here because the reviews for this place were just glowing so invited a bunch of friends for lunch and I was hoping that everyone would have a great time eating some delicious food. I told my friends that it was going to be a weekend lunch on a Saturday. When I arrived here around 11:30 AM, the restaurant was empty. Other than our party, nobody else was here (others will come after the fact, but only a few parties). Obviously we got seated pretty quickly. At first, there was only one waitress for the whole restaurant. So even though the restaurant was pretty dead, service was really slow. The one waitress quickly took our order, but she was really slow at follow ups. My sister didn't have any utensils when the food came out and she was having a really hard time to flag her down. The chips and dips are delicious but again, it took me a while to be able to flag her down so we could get some small plates for everybody. Pretty much, everybody was just having the hardest time to flag her down. Either she was helping other customers, or she was just behind the bar not paying any attention. It was such a disappointment given that we were the largest party in the restaurant (party of 10+). As for food, I ordered the Mi Causita for appetizer. I ordered it to share, but nobody seemed to like it. I thought it was just okay. I wouldn't recommend getting this but get something with meat instead. For the main entree, I ordered the Lomo Saltado because that's what everybody was raving about. The rice and steak were delicious. However, I didn't think that the steak was anything spectacular. It's nothing I'd go out of my way to get. In addition, they give you a lot of fries with so it's carb overload. Could have done with a little less fries and more meat. My sister ordered the Bistec A Lo Pobre and she enjoyed her food. I gave it a try and in my opinion, although it was delicous; again, it was nothing spectacular. I came by for lunch last weekend. This was my first time here and I almost did not enter the restaurant. At the front door there were two signs prohibiting open carry (30.07) and concealed carry (30.06) of handguns. Both signs were new and made me believe that the owner decided to ban diners from the new open carry law here in Texas however the owner also decided to ban concealed carry which has been in place for many years. Those signs do nothing but keep law abiding people from being able to protect themselves and are totally ignored by criminals. Places like this make me feel uneasy eating here. For that reason, I will not return. My meal consisted of the ceviche mixto which was fresh fish, calamari, shrimp, mussels and clams marinated in lime juice and other spices with sweet potatoes and lettuce. This was a cold dish however it tasted good in its seasonings and was healthy on top of that. My table service was good. Chips and green salsa were also delivered to the table before the entree arrived. My rating is for the meal only and I give it a 3. Plenty of parking outside, but lookout for the sign as it was a bit harder to catch for some people. They have live bands/singers on Saturday night which is nice for a more lively crowd. We came to this place for more than a party of 20 and they were able to accommodate enough tables to have our whole group together (it's usually so hard to find a place that can fit a lot!) It's also BYOB! We saw a lot of families that brought their own bottles of wine! As we waited, we got free chips and green sauce dip that was so yummy and fresh, I can finish one whole basket myself! Must try the chicha morada drink! It's made with purple corn and taste is amazing when served cold (pitchers available). I wished there was free refills for it, it's sweet and yummy! I reserved for a group and they were very accommodating. They were willing to give us separate checks. I had an appetizer which was plenty for me called "Mi Causita." It's avocado with mashed potatoes and you choose your meat. I had tuna fish. The appetizer is topped with aji sauce. It can be a little rich so either you share or tell them to cut on the sauce. The sangria was ok but I'm still giving them five stars because of the food and customer service. Everyone loved their food and they brought us complimentary flan. We went here on Valentines and it was such a good choice and great experience. The initial walk through the door was an ambiance of respectful class that welcomed those who wanted to be well dressed or come casually. The wait staff were well trained and had a clean appearance and great mannerisms. The menu was full of seafood options and seemed to be their specialty. There were maybe 10 options of similar twists to chicken and rice combinations as well. I really enjoy Peruvian food because of the spices and fresh flavors. Their rice was good. I wish it had more of pepper flavors jump out. You could definitely taste the green onion which is common in the dishes. The rice was moist and tasteful. The chicken was well cooked. I added the ultra spicy sauce they serve you with chips to my rice because the typical burst of flavors weren't present. We also tried the seafood rice that came with muscles, crab, and baby squid. It was definitely fishy. It would be too fishy for those who are used to eating cod or talapia. The meat from the crab is good. It's not plentiful as they are smaller which is understandable. We aren't sure about the pairing of seafood and rice. I think it would be better with pasta or alone. I didn't care for the rice on reheat as it was overpowered by the taste of the sea. I was realllly hoping it would be good because we were taking a chance here. So glad we did. The food was beautiful and delicious. My parents loved the meal and experience as well. Other places are either frou frou Bourgeois Peruvian-Latin hybrids that can't completely commit (I'm looking at you Latin Bites), OR they claim to be authentic but use shortcuts, cheap ingredients, and shoddy techniques. La Guitarra Con Sazon serves true Peruvian food, packed with flavor, beautifully presented, and authentically made. For reasons beyond me, the restaurant was eerily empty when I walked in for dinner. This was my four-year-old daughter's first experience with Peruvian food, and she loved every bit. She annihilated her first Chicha Morada (purple corn drink). She fought me tooth and nail for the cow heart kebabs, more lovingly referred to as Anticuchos de Lomito - my favorite and the best I've ever had. With one bite of the Lomo Saltado, my boyfriend's eyes disappeared to the back of his head. I've only had one other lomo that was better, and that place is not in Houston. My Arroz Chaufa (Peruvian fried rice) was completely riddled with all sorts of seafood: mussels, squid, large shrimp, and even crab in its shell! The unique flavor of this fried rice made it apparent that the other arroz chaufas I'd tried before were just impostors. And because every dish was such a home run, I felt obligated to order the Ceviche de Pescado y Camarones for good measure. Peruvian ceviche is one of a kind because of the Leche de Tigre marinade. La Guitarra's leche de tigre is perfectly complex; pairing this with the sweet potato, choclo, and cancha creates an unbeatable ceviche that will leave you in awe. I love Peruvian so much that I lured one in and convinced him to live with me (love you Jason P) - so I would say I have plenty of experience eating the food. La Guitarra Con Sazon finally showed me why Peru is considered the gastronomic capitol of the world. Some say it is even one of the world's most important cuisines.
