I have been coming to this place ever since I was little so it has kind of grown on me. When I went here last time, I has my plate in front of me and I was taking a bite of my beans when my plate was abruptly taken away by a waitress. I put down my fork and I was deeply disappointed. I didn't even get to finish my meal... The place is run down and the girls restroom is DEFINITELY not up to code... You couldn't fit a mouse wheelchair in there let alone a wheelchair for a person! I'm from Indianapolis where they have fire taco and Mexican places. This was the worst I've been too. Not 1 Mexican in site, which was the first red flag. Their tacos are Taco Bell like tacos, and the service was not that good. I'm bi racial as well, and felt the eyes on me and mugs when i walked in. She put salt on my rim instead of sugar which is what i asked for. And i asked for corn tortillas and got flower, then when they brought out the corn, it was just Walmart Americanized corn tortillas that tasted like fried flour tortillas. Horrible. I grew up in this place. The new owner has changed some things for the better. The new paint, carpet, and the decor are nice! The thing I'm upset about is, the chicken in the burritos is different, the refried beans are runny, and the chips dry. I've been coming to La Hacienda since I was in college. Not much has changed over the years although they no longer accept checks. Their sauce for dipping is amazing. The red sauce is spicy and perfect on fresh chips that are crispy and delicate. No thick hard to chew chips here. I always get the La Hacienda plate. A taco, enchilada and burrito with rice and beans, I can never finish it all but get lots of different flavors and textures. And I can take some home for lunch the next day. A staple in the community where most don't need a menu. A pitcher of frozen margaritas also makes it a must! read more

I have eaten here on numerous occasions the only thing I really liked was their guacamole and chips and chips and salsa recently I stopped in for a large to go order of the guacamole and chips I was disappointed that it now comes in a very much smaller container it was not fresh chunks of avocado not mashed and part of it looked brown I threw this in the trash waisted like $9 plus tip It use to be so good.... Rude waitress couldn't get our order right and told my daughters father to get out!! They put a new trainee waitress been there 2 days on a table of 6. She didn't know the menu, had no idea what a Macho Plate is!! Brought wrong food twice to our table. It took 1 solid hour before she brought 2 plates of food. 2 out of 6 ate. 4 went hungry-no dinner. Then the man manager came over to figure out our receipt and Megan the rude waitress tried to keep 1.00 cash tip and when my daughters father said no she told him " You need to get out!" Not the best, I'm picky with Mexican food and this was not authentic to me at all. The food was flavored differently, more so bland and basic. If you are looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant with Hispanic wait staff, Mariachi bands, and specialty dishes like carnitas and paella--don't come here. You will be sorely disappointed. There is nothing authentically Mexican about this place. If you have a cholesterol problem or don't like the sight of yellow tinged oil seeping out of the melted Colby cheese, then don't come here. On the other hand, if you figure God invented Lipitor for just such places, then come on down to Muncie's southside. I don't know that you are any less safe there than you are on the BSU campus with its C- safety rating. On this visit I had the "Hacienda Plate" and my friend tried the "Sirloin Burrito". The Hacienda Plate was good. However, the sirloin burrito was horrible. The waitress noticed we weren't eating it and offered to get us something else. He opted for the chicken burritos and they are 100 times better. The service was good, the price is average. I was trying to find an alternative to Puerto Vallarta-- boy, what a GIANT MISTAKE! I can usually find something nice to say about a place, but the only nice thing I have to say is to the fellow Yelpers!- AVOID LA HACIENDA! The food was horrible- not even close to 'authentic' Mexican food. The beans are straight out of a can, the rice is mushy and similar to microwave rice found in an Enchilada TV dinner. They do not use the correct kind of cheese- they use Cheddar, which causes an oily build-up on the food when heated. The restaurant itself is scary- no really, I did not feel safe there and I did not feel safe parking my car in their tiny lot. The clientele were mostly bikers. The only way this place can stay in business is because they serve alcohol and maybe, just maybe people are too drunk to know what they are eating. I 100% am not being too harsh or hypercritical. If you have some morbid curiosity, then go and waste $30 (yes 2 dinners came to a whopping $30!!)- but if you disagree with what I am writing then please write another review. Bottom Line: Overpriced Garbage! Honestly, Taco Bell would have tasted better than what we got at La Hacienda. read more

Some people really, really like this restaurant. Hey, after all ... they're still here! I personally do not care for it. For one thing - and someone else mentioned this too - I don't feel confident in assuming this location is safe. That's not the restaurant's fault; as I said, they've been here a long time and surely things have changed in the area. But to me, it is a reason not to go. Secondly, when I have gone (in someone else's car!), I have been less than impressed with the quality of the food. One word comes to mind: greasy. I mean, fast food is greasy, but I'm talking about pools of grease on and around your enchiladas. You know how you sometimes have to "blot" a piece of pizza? This is like that, but with a sponge. Third, I know everyone likes to bicker about what's "authentic" and what's not, especially as there seem to be three well-known Mexican restaurants in Muncie all claiming to offer authentic food. But it really doesn't seem to me that this restaurant uses a cheese common in Mexican cooking. Somehow, it doesn't melt right and it takes on a Nickelodeon-like orange hue, oozing grease in some parts and being burnt in others. I'm not sure which Mexican region's cooking style that is common to, but I believe it is a recognizable feature of the Microwave Cooking school of thought. The building is crumbling and the interior is dark, dated, and cramped, but the $5.75 lunch was quite good. My lunch companion had fun playfully jousting with the waitress. The red salsa was spicy--not too hot--but the green was decent as well. Food came promptly during the crowded lunch rush. I have frequented this place for almost 15 years now! They STILL offer great Tex-Mex and Carry out Margaritas!! The staff has always been friendly. The onion soup is surprisingly delicious. I love that when dining in the margarita comes in a pitcher with a little glass, so cute! Definitely a little outdated, but if you love a good blast from the past (Tex-Mex style), this is it! I have always loved this place since the 80's. However, I either remember the Beef Empanada wrong or it is not quite as good as it used to be. I realize anything covered in real cheese will have some grease action but my meal today was soggy and not the yummy taste I recall. That said my meal was fair and and always the 2 sauces and chips filling. The reviews commenting on old outdated crack me up because it is exactly the same as 30 yrs ago which the same could have been said then. It's charm is the dive local Mexican eatery feel. My server for lunch was great and the place was packed which pleased me. For those of us oldtimers I still think of Pat coming to my table. Next time I will order my other old favorite in hopes pf a little less soggy grease...The Beef Crispy. We were visiting from North Carolina and gave this restaurant a try before reading any reviews. With such a negative experience I felt it only necessary to give you the heads up on this place. The atmosphere is dreary, prices are high, and most importantly the food is bland and distasteful. With a party of four, no one ate more than 3 bites of their meal. We politely paid our bill without complaining and left. Three out of the four in our party had upset stomachs shortly after lunch. Taco Bell has a better version of Mexican food than this place. Very bland every thing covered in cheddar cheese with some beef tomatoes and lettuce thrown in. Very greasy, my stomach now hates me. Had low expectations and those became reality. Wish I had a corona to go with it because maybe it would have been a little better cause of the alcohol. read more

this isn't so much a review of La Hacienda as it is about the location. Yes, all the food is covered with cheddar cheese & microwaved, but they also have one of the best taco salads you can get in Muncie. They also have the best margaritas in Muncie, & I would argue with anyone who says different. Are people afraid because the restaurant isn't in a strip mall in the north side of Muncie? Do they feel safer on McGalliard? Yes, the decor inside isn't the greatest, but it's been that way forever & we don't really pay attention to it anyway. Are people scared that La Ha is in a part of town that is mixed busines & residential? That doesn't make it any less safe than McGalliard. I think people are letting the stereotype of the south end of Muncie being so rough cloud their judgement. My daughter worked there for awhile & she never felt unsafe while she was working or going to her car after her shift was done. I wish northsiders would stop assuming they aren't safe on the south end of town & give southside businesses a chance, & don't come down here with pre-conceived ideas of what to expect. read more
