We went out of our way to drive to this location based on a few other reviews I read on Yelp. Big mistake! I want to start by saying that the restaurant is not in a very nice area. And after our experience, I wish I had recommended we stopped by another restaurant in a more central part of town. We arrived at approximately 12:40 PM. The restaurant was at less than half capacity. We ordered chips with queso. I should have realized that if a restaurant can't get that and salsa right its a HUGE red flag. The chips were incredibly salty and the queso was dried out overly salty. It did anything but fill our stomach while we waited 40 mins for a chicken quesadilla, the "foot long burrito " see pictures and, beef enchiladas. The quesadilla was average and contained what tasted like boiled chicken. The "burrito" was nothing near a burrito. It was the width of an enchilada. I paid an extra $3.00 for queso on my burrito which was the saving grace. However, that made it barely edible. The beef enchilada plate had one flavor, chili powder. A great stop for lunch as we were driving along. The chilaquiles were lovely - enjoyable red and green salsa, over easy eggs, and lots of cheese. Plus, it was easy to make this a vegetarian meal since the beans are cooked in oil. My husband gave a good report from his pork tacos as well. As with any restaurant in NM, I wish they would get rid of the styrofoam containers. Update: I see people complained about the service. Our new favorite Mexican food place. The red chili is sooo good, salsa is spicy and the guacamole tasty. We recommend the chilaquiles, picadillo, and beef enchiladas. Most reasonable prices around. Storefront is lacking, we drove by twice thinking it was long closed. Maybe that's part of the best kept secret. Plenty of seating, is busy busy at lunch. I was a little apprehensive eating here, as it's located in a more residential/industrial area of town. The restaurant is also housed in a large gray metal trailer-like "building," which looks nothing like your traditional dining establishment. Inside, there are wooden booths as well as wooden tables and chairs. There are two dining rooms. Don't be in any rush is the takeaway here. Service is slow, because it looks like they're understaffed with the one waitress scurrying about taking orders, retrieving entrees from the open kitchen and putting them on a wheeled plastic push cart, and wheeling the cart around the restaurant to deliver the food. She was also the only person to handle the checks at the register after people were done eating. There also appears to only be one cook - an older woman. The food looked great and homemade; however, the slight disclaimer is that we saw her finish the entrees by putting them in a microwave... not sure if that's the norm, although the husband advised this is more likely than not out there. Husband got cheese enchiladas topped with a fried egg and I got the shredded beef enchiladas, both with Christmas sauce. The entrees come with absolutely delectable Mexican rice and creamy refried beans. We also got the chips and salsa with queso blanco. The tortilla chips are definitely from a bag and not made from scratch, but the salsa, though runny, was flavorful and packed some heat. The queso blanco was surprisingly good. Went there for Father's Day lunch. Waitress was a younger girl. No "how are you" or any small nice talk, which is fine. Ordered a ground beef burrito that came with cheese, sour cream, guac and more. Whenever my food came out my tortilla was cold. I asked if I could have it heated up. She ended up heating it up for several minutes. My sour cream was curdled and meat was really dry. As she reached to take my burrito out of the microwave she grabbed it with her bare hands to check the temperature. Mind you she has been cleaning tables, cashing people out and had long acrylic nails on. Needless to say we won't be eating here again. Super disappointing!! read more

We were driving through and saw the good reviews on Yelp. What a disappointment! Chips and salsa were $3.00, we decided to try them. The chips were bag chips and the salsa tasted like canned tomato sauce with to many peppers added. I like hot but the salsa was to hot. We decided to order queso blanco, again a disappointing selection. The queso had no flavor. We asked the waitress for her recommendation, she suggested the beef fajita plate. I took her recommendation. The rice was fluffy and tasty, the refried beans were tasty but the beef fajitas were extremely tough! My husband ordered the Caldo de Res, bland, band, bland. We each only ate about 1/2 of our food. The tortillas were thin and fresh. The tortillas were the only item i enjoyed eating. When we were leaving we passed a table where the people sitting there only ate about 1/3 of their enchiladas. I was sitting where I could see the kitchen. After several minutes I noticed plates going into one of the two microwaves. I believe the entrees are prepared earlier in the day and then microwaved as needed. I would never go back. read more

My second visit to La Herradura was less of a "wow" experience, but still clean, tasty, and pleasant. They were out of horchata this time, unfortunately, but I'm not sure why. I hope their policy of free refills hasn't changed. Also, my tacos were less hot and fresh tasting. Then again, I was with a larger group, so some delay is to be expected. This is near ground zero for TexMex. Super authentic, its like Abuelita's (granny's) kitchen got out of control. Like others have said this place is about the food. The building and location make more sense for a welding shop then a restaurant. I had the chile relleno and it was perfect. The double burrito is almost too big to finish. I was told about this lil joint several years ago and always make it a point to grab a bite when I am in town. I hate the barbacoa tacos plate and they were great! The toppings were fresh and the overall flavor was great. The food is homemade right there! Two of my co-workers got the enchiladas and chile relleno and said those were great! No refills, she just went and sat herself down and started chatting with her friend. Any way onto the food. The chipotle tacos were outstanding! The barbacoa tacos were a little dry but had a good flavor. The asado tacos were bland bland bland, almost like roast beef. We tried the enchiladas and they were okay one red and one green sauce. I will say they were both spicy!! Not for those who aren't used to spice. The rice and beans were fresh but as usual the beans lacked salt. Over all the plate was not hot and the shells weren't crispy this time. I wish we could say we had the sopapillas but by the time we walked up to the sever to ask her for our check we had grown tired of waiting, our food had settled, and we just wanted to go back to our hotel. I'm normally not a taco person - maybe NY jsut doesnt have good tacos because I dont like corn tortillas but omg it was so good here! it didnt even taste like corn tortillas. The asado was nice and spicy, rice and beans were very flavorful. We made this one of our destination restaurants on our grand tour of the US three years ago in our RV. We saw La Herradura on Anthony Bourdains TV program. It instantly went on my list of must do/eat on our trip. We were not disappointed. As a matter of fact, I have eaten thousands of tacos in my long lifetime and their chicken crispy taco was the best I have ever eaten. I have searched long and hard for the past three years to find a Mexican restaurant that equaled that crispy chicken taco. It doesn't exist. My husband had the cheese enchiladas and he loved it. I grew up in Jersey so I don't know how much bearing this will have, but this was the best Mexican food I have ever had in my life! I got five tacos -- two barbacoa, one adobe, one chiptole, and one beef. Adobe was my favorite but every single one after that was at a close second. The guy I was with had some spicy chicken dish which was equally delicious, albeit spicy as can be. Somebody at the table next to me ordered the burrito supreme and it was two times the size of a "Chipotle" burrito. The location is kind of obscure, but don't let this throw you off. The people that go and work there are quite friendly. Atmosphere is exactly what you would expect when looking at it from the outside - minimal and low key. Someone suggested I needed to find a hole-in-the-wall Mexican place tonight as I travel al Norte to Santa Fe, so I set out to do exactly that. La Herradura's reviews looked outstanding and Yelp's mapping function got me here expertly. Located in a poorer part of town, La Herradura proves your priest's favorite proverb -- that poverty is a totally relative concept. Trust me, the food in this place improves everyone's standard of living on this side of town. The interior is clean and well lit as are the rest rooms. I found the placed packed with families with small kids - always a good sign. I ordered the five taco plate with rice and beans. My first fork full of the beans told me this place was different. I don't know how they do it, but the beans alone made the trip worthwhile. All of my food was HOT, but the plates were NOT. The taco shells were freshly fried flour tortillas (still hot) with the most savory fillings I have ever encountered. The salad ingredients were super fresh. I highly recommend the fajita tacos. Additionally, I found their red chili salsa to be one of the best I have ever encountered. I was so impressed that I did something that I almost never do: I ordered sopapillas. The sopapillas matched up to my already well-developed expectations: light, flakey, hot. Mmmmmmmm. The local reviewers believe this place to be the best restaurant in Artesia. Who am I to disagree. Perhaps the best food in Artesia, and they DO take credit cards. However, no alcohol GET THE TACOS. They are delicious and the shell is amazing. Enchiladas are average as are beans and rice. We lived in Artesia for almost a year, and ate at La Herradura more than any other place. WE. LOVE. IT. Perhaps the best dish is the taco plate. Deshebrada con chile verde y papas tacos are the best!
