Understanding it's a small town, this restaurant is clean and food was good with fresh veggies. Warm bread with hot marinara served after seating yourself, that was yummy. Minestrone soup was okay, a little oily, which is a word I haven't used before in describing that particular recipe. Hatch chili Alfredo was satisfying but would try something different if we were to return. Chicken cacciatore was delightful, very generous portions all around. I would say 3.5 for rating overall but I have to choose & since we needed to ask for napkins, ask for utensils and ask for boxes, I went 3. Was visiting Artesia and decided to stop by. Food took a while to get out but the food was honestly fine. Service was not it though, drinks barely got filled, had to constantly flag down servers to get condiments or extra silverware. Members of the group I was with decided to leave tips reflecting service and food and upon leaving the restaurant were talked down upon and lectured by the servers. Unfortunately it made an average experience into a poor one, I wouldn't recommend returning even if the food was good just bc of the service we received. Hope the servers can be paid more in the future to avoid lecturing future customers as the server kept reiterating to the group they only get paid $4.50 hourly?? Let's see what they got. Placed an order to go. Staff is pleasant but busy. The variety of items is great. Starting off with mozzarella with sauce. Veal Parmigiana and a cannoli for dessert. Update in a bit. The bread is really good. The pasta just a bit done but not too bad. Veal was okay and if you've got a taste for Italian, it's good. Out here for work for a few days and thanks to yelp for the restaurant suggestion. Piccolino was super packed for dinner on a Monday night. They have tons of pasta dishes, chicken, seafood, pizza and appetizers. Also desserts. Had the broccoli pesto pasta (there was no meat), and my buddy got the shrimp Alfredo, both were good. The food is so good but who wants to order when the workers are COMPLETELY rude? All of them need to be nicer and learn customer service. They need to literally be taught how to not be unprofessional in a work setting from the way they talk to customers down to how the waitresses even hand off their plates when the food comes out. Trust me, I always get my plate thrown on the table when I dine. They always give off bad energy and it's always takeout when I come here but even then. The service I get from the very little time I'm at the restaurant is trash. This was my 3rd time to this local restaurant, but this will absolutely be my last time. The other 2 times that I have visited the food was edible.... nothing great at all. But this time I decided to try something simple. Something I thought surely they could get right. I chose a spaghetti dish with the bolognese sauce minus the mushrooms. It was an enormous serving and I dug in with high hopes of a good dish. But, no the sauce was not that pleasant. When looking at the menu I noticed their desserts and I thought I would take one home and give it a try. After putting my leftover food into a to-go container, I sat there for over 10 min. waiting for my server to come see if I would like anything else. there were 4 servers on duty. The entire time that I sat there waiting they were sitting down and on their phones. I would look up and look at them hoping they would get the hint and come check on me but they were more interested on what was on their phones than attending to the customers. While waiting, more customers came in and sat down at two different tables. After they sat down the servers did get up and attend to them, even walking by my table 2 or 3 times. I was never acknowledge acknowledge and was never asked if I wanted or needed anything else..... I finally got up and went to the counter to pay because I was never brought a ticket. This was the worst customer service and because of it I will not be back.... I don't know how they stay in business with customer service like this. The owners need to open their eyes and read their reviews.... Your staff needs some serious customer service training!!!!! another note to the owners. Recommendations: - shrimp fra diavolo From research this was the only Italian place in Artesia(local too). Popular by locals I came here to see what the hype was about. Walking into the restaurant I was not greeted by a waiter/waitress so I assumed it was order by the cashier type of place. Waiting in the line for 5 min, the cashier tells me to go ahead and sit where ever I want for dine in. Cool. They started me out with bread and marinara sauce but Bread was tasteless with no character to it. Anyways, I asked the waitress for recommendations and she told me to try shrimp fra diavolo and stracciatella soup, And I did. Stracciatella soup had eggs, spinach and cheese, Interesting and flavorful mix. Not a soup I'd go back over and over again for but one that I'll try once in my life time. The diavolo, sauce was amazing with parsley and the spicy that had me addicted to it. The only disappointment was the pasta, felt like one I could just buy off of a walmart shelf and it definitely dropped the quality of the whole package. That bread I mentioned earlier, went perfect with the left over sauce from diavolo. Just know that theres alot of sauce with most of the pasta here. read more

I've been to Piccolino's a time or two over the past decade, and a recent trip through Artesia did not disappoint. The beer was cold, the wine was spot on, and the bread and marinara appetizer was a meal in itself. A neighboring table offered us some of their calamari: it looked like enough to feed a family! We regretfully declined, but it was readily apparent that it was golden manna from the sea. We took a pizza back to our B&B, and once again Piccolino's proved to be a master in the art of making a proper pie. The wait staff is very committed, and the close tables make it feel like an authentic NYC restaurant. This is truly a great place. read more

She sat at a table visiting with her friend and looking at her phone. When she finally gave us her attention, it was as if we were a bother. I liked the fact it came gratis pre-meal. And honestly, it was the best food I had. Ordered the chicken alfredo. While it was served hot as hell; it was also a grainy, bland alfredo with gristly, dry chunks of chicken. Their food is top notch. Best in town actually. BUT THEIR SERVICE IS HORRIBLE. Two examples: 1. Tonight, Friday, March 26th, 2021, called 40 minutes before closing. Asked to put in a takeout. Employee said sure, can you hold? I said yes and held for about 10 minutes, then lost the connection. Called back, same employee answered, I told her I was on hold and lost my connection. She told me "Sorry, we are closed". I said I was on hold to order, but the line dropped, and I just called back. She then LIED to me and said sorry, we slowed down around 7 and we are closed now. I said "Really?" she said Sorry, and hung up. 2. Ordered takeout several months ago, went to pick it up, left an $10 tip on a $48 order, got home and discovered they left part of my order out. Called them and the employee apologized saying she forgot to add it. She told me I could come back and get it, so I did. Drove back, and she still charged me for it. I said I just drove 7 miles for something you forgot to include on my order. She said "Sorry" and charged me anyway. I should have told her to take it out of the tip. read more

The food is decent. My waitress was working hard and was most pleasant. The place seems to go out of it's way to make customers unwelcomed. For example, it was 103F today. I asked the young lady who gave me my menu if i could have a giant glass of water. She said she would tell my waitress. Then she went to the servers station, where water is poured, and got me bread and marinara. After which she sat down 5 feet behind me and rolled silverware in napkins. The manager was literally 4' away sorting tickets. I didn't know who my waitress was but there seemed to be only two which turned out to be the case and both had passed by in a rush several times.. After a few more minutes I got up and asked the manager if I could have a giant glass of water as I had been working on a roof all day. She seemed surprised and said yes, I'll let your waitress know. My waitress said she'd be right with me while holding an armful of dirty plates. I told her 'you need a busser'. She didn't understand or didn't hear me so I repeated 'you need a busser' The manager overheard me as the waitress smiled and shrugged and said again surprised and at the same time curtly 'she has one'. Oops. I watched as this poor woman, my waitress literally raced from table to table to kitchen and back while the manager and the busser counted tickets, rolled silverware and chatted with friends who stopped in to hang out. I asked my waitress for a glass for my beer. It startled her. A few minutes later she came back wit a big red plastic coke glass (water glass about liter sized) and said we don't have chilled glasses. The beer could not have filled half of it. This is rural NM. I get that but I wasn't asking for linens. I had been here twice before. Similar but not quite as much the felling that they really didn't need my business. In fact, it was crowed and I wasn't singled out. They treat everyone similarly. It's too bad. A few pleasantries...jumping on a basic request...a bit more welcoming of the patron would go a long way. Piccolino in a minute, but first let me share a sad tale. So we drive to Texas and we'll be there a week, so I figure it won't be hard to shove some BBQ down my gullet at some point. But on the way there it's X-mas eve so Rix Pit in Fort Stockton and Mesquite Wood BBQ in Iraan aren't open. Well nuts. And as it happens we don't have any in Kerrville either, but we're passing back through Fort Stockton on our way out so we swing by Rix. It's January 2nd, but they're closed for New Year's. Errr, but fuggit. We're planning to go to Danny's Place in Carlsbad, NM the next night so I'll catch some BBQ on the tail end. We get to Danny's Place Tuesday night at 6pm. Closed. Apparently. There's no sign giving their bidness hours or anything, but the door is locked. Goddamn it! Week and a half in Texas (and environs) and no BBQ. If that's not proof that the world has "moved on" then I don't know what is. So, goddamn pissed, I drive back to Artesia where the gal at the hotel suggests Piccolino and a BBQ place in town. Well, Mama and The Pookster want Italian so Piccolino it'was. Pulling up it didn't look too promising. We've been watching a lot of "Restaurant Impossible" lately and Robert Irvine would tear this place a new asshole. But when we got inside and got menus in hand I was tremendously impressed with the range of choices. I went softball and got linguine with meatballs. The sauce was a little more runny than I care for but MAN was that some tasty shit! And the meatballs too, yummo! This is also the only place I've been to where I could get just a cup of stracciatella soup with my meal. Most places insist you get a big bowl which ruins your dinner but leaves you hungry a few hours later. That's a star right there. The only thing I didn't see was saltimbocca, but if I'd had my head probably would've exploded like in "Scanners", so it's probably for the better.
