La Knitterie has been around the block; I came across a book written in the 90s by Edith, one of the owners, in a used bookstore recently. But the shop has completely not kept up with the times. Not having your inventory priced with tags is a no-go, full stop. "It's too hard" or "we have too much stuff" are not acceptable explanations when it creates a really awkward situation for everyone involved: the owner, who has to look up prices individually, and the customer, who may be caught out at the register when something is out of budget. Their tenure is evident by the sheer volume of things they have, and to their credit, their stock is extremely varied and large. Quite easy to lose two hours here. But I found the service hot and cold: they'd sometimes follow me around, but respond coldly when I asked questions. The pricing structure and service just made this a really unpleasant experience that was not at all offset by their large stock. I will skip this when I'm in the area and won't be recommending to friends. read more

I dropped by previously on a Monday without realizing they're closed on Mondays. I was able to come back on a Friday with my mom. This shop is MASSIVE, with thousands of yarn made up of different fibers from acrylics to cashmere to camel to merino wool; you name it! They also have a big selection of buttons, knitting patterns, embroidery/cross knit patterns, and knitting supplies. What I love is they have a knitting club on site where you can also get lessons and help if you've reached a problem with your knitting. Prices are not displaced on yarn as they have so many so I would advise gathering a few choices and then asking about their pricing so you can find one in your budget. This is a family owned small business and I chatted with the son of the owners for a few minutes and this seems like such a lovely location establishment to have in our neighborhood, especially if you're a knitter. What a treasure! I didn't know where to look first, they have so many beautiful yarns. I wanted to make mittens and they had a beautiful angora pair. They gave me the pattern and made sure i had all the tools before i left. I returned to ask about seeming, and they were helpful and a pleasure to sit and chat with. I wanted to make a bonnet, Edith looked through books and Warren scanned the internet. Again, I left with everything I needed. They showed me a Sophie scarf, and I think my girlwill love it. It is also quite inconvenient that the prices are not listed on any of the yarn but seeing as their selection is so vast it is understandable that they aren't able to list the prices for every skein in the store. However, something like a pricing chart in different sections to help with that issue immensely since having to go up to the cashier and ask what the price of every skein you're interested in is, is incredibly annoying. The ladies that gather there are friendly and all chat as they work on their projects. They are very knowledgeable and good at their craft but I feel uncomfortable intruding on the sanctity of their space. As someone who is still a beginner within the knitting world I felt judged for the way I knit and the mistakes I made. After passing by this shop a few times, I finally decided to stop by because I was looking for a specific color of Noro Ito and heard this store carried lots of Noro. Let me just say: I wish I never entered at all. It has probably been a year since I visited, but I won't ever forget it. For one, the store is very disorganized; there surely is a wide variety of yarns, but good luck ever finding anything if you're looking for something specific. None of the skeins are priced either, so if you're a novice when it comes to yarn and fibers, you may be in for sticker shock at the register. Second: the owner, an old woman who didn't even introduce herself, had the worst attitude I'd ever seen from someone in a yarn shop. I've been to pretty much every yarn shop in LA and frequent a lovely one close to me, and never had an experience like it before. She kept side eyeing me and my boyfriend as we walked around the shop being shown yarn by the owner's son. There was even a moment where her son was showing me a specific skein of yarn, and this woman comes from out of nowhere and snatches it out of my hands like I wasn't worthy! I'm not sure if it was because I look young and inexperienced or because I wasn't the type of customer she was used to "helping" (aka not rich and white), but wow, who does that? Third: it will take forever to get rung up because her husband runs the register and has to look up the prices of things individually. I'm not sure if it's because he did it on purpose or really didn't know, but I definitely got upcharged on some buttons I purchased and were told they were "rare". Overall, the only good thing about the place is the owner's son and his kindness and excitement (2 stars solely for his genuine attitude), but other than that, I regret ever stepping foot in the store or spending any of my hard earned money here. This is a hidden gem of a shop. A friend of mind texted last month with a photo of a wall, packed ceiling to floor with beautiful yarn. All her comment said was "I've found nirvana." Of course I immediately asked where she was and it was La Knitterie! I had a chance to come in today and my oh my, it IS nirvana. The business is family owned and are SO KNOWLEDGABLE about their craft. I am currently sitting here waiting for them to wind my yarn into cakes (a free service with purchase) and sitting here with the owner (a wonderful woman by the name of Edith) while she helps a customer reverse engineer a pattern from a finished garment! They are changing the gage for a different weight yarn. This is true skill and a lost art. This is wholeheartedly my new favorite needlecraft store. The selection is amazing. Within 10 seconds of walking in, one of the owners greeted me and asked what I was looking for. I searched all over the internet to find what I needed: weight 3 DK yarn, 100% wool, variegated. They had SO many beautiful options and showed me a few of their MANY options! They are a family business and they are all very kind. I've never received such amazing and knowledgeable service. People may say it's "messy" but I found it very fun to see all the unique yarn they had--plus if you just ask what you are looking for they help you navigate it very easily. I've been on an obsessive yarn hunt for the past week, visiting 5 of the most popular yarn stores in the LA area. This was by far the best and largest collection. If anything the options were overwhelming, but that just means there was everything I was looking for (including some sustainable/ethical brands which is really important for me and hard to find in yarn stores). The man at the front was so kind and helpful in assisting me but also in letting me roam without pressure for the 2 hours I was there. Good prices too! I was hesitant to visit this store after reading some of the reviews (amazing how they're filtered on the mobile app vs. the online website). The last thing I needed was condescending local yarn store owners on my 2013 LA Yarn Crawl. The store itself is crowded, cluttered (YES cluttered!), and stocked from top to bottom with yarn. Because I was trying to end my day here and I was tired from visiting other stores, I didn't browse as efficiently as I could have or should have. I did see tons of yarn. I didn't like that none of it was priced, and according to papers posted everywhere, the reason why is because they have some of the most competitive prices in the industry, and they can't price over 30,000 items in stock. Take it to a cashier and they'll be happy to look up the price for you. Mmm I'll pass. It was a bit claustrophobic in this store. It's not pretty. It's stuffy. I'm not trying to be rude or mean about it, I just didn't feel comfortable here. The staff was nice but maybe the owners sons were on their best behavior because of all the new customers the yarn crawl brought in. Perhaps. The owners son was a little overbearing. His attitude was more like "Let me make you a deal" than "welcome to our lovely yarn shop". We just wanted to browse in peace. The three stars are for the enormous stock of yarn. This is a great yarn store tucked away in a mini strip mall. We were greeted promptly upon walking in and given a run down of the store. I found some lovely purple NORO yarn and mohair to make a lovely vest. I'd recommend you come here if you like to do a bit of search for your next project. I feel like I got a good deal on the yarn as I got 5 skeins for around $112. The prices aren't on the items but if you're going to a yarn store you should already know this won't be Joann's prices. I was visiting LA and was very excited to come to this store. The owner and her husband both greeted me and I was so thrilled to see they had a knitting circle going. I picked out a pattern and the owner helped me get all of the materials I needed. They only have 5 of a type of yarn in stock at a time, but have a warehouse, and mailed me the rest I needed (because I'm out of town); it came pretty fast. This store has a wonderful selection of yarn, and I can't wait to come back the next time I visit. I wish I lived here, so I could knit in their lovely knitting circle. I needed beads for my project and she recommended a bead store down the road that had what I needed. The owner said she was available for FaceTime or email if I needed any assistance with my project. Ok, I've read some of the negative reviews on here about LKP and I have a few things to say about this store... First, I've been shopping at LKP for well over 10 years and I would go there with my mom when I was a teenager, so she could buy yarn for her projects. This business has been around for a long time because it supplies knitters/crocheters with an extremely large selection of incredible yarn, patterns (I've even purchased vintage pattern books there), and anything else you might need to make something beautiful. The added bonus is that Edith is there. She might not make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but I don't need my hand held when I speak to her - I need help/instructions for my project or yarn advice. This place is her business, they have a constant flow of customers, and (as I already mentioned) a massive selection of yarn. Also, Edith is known in the LA area as THE woman to go see if you're having an issue with your knitting or need any kind of help. She knows her sh*t - and it's not from chatting it up with every customer, it's from working hard. I respect her talent and think she's badass at what she does. Meryl handles the register and most of the "business" side of things. He will let you know a price if you ask him. There are thousands of skeins of yarn in this store, and 2 people working there, so I'm not the least bit surprised there are no prices on anything. It doesn't bother me at all. Basically, this small business kills it if you're in need of accurate knowledge on knitting or a selection of yarn from all over the world (I should also mention they have a great needle selection too). read more

This shop is owned by a husband who takes care of the paperwork, and his wife who is the knitter and knows the stock. She is very rude, and will lie to you, if she thinks it will get her a sale. I'm a very experienced knitter and yarn shopper. (And, she knows this, since I've been there many times, and she's seen the kind of work that I do.) I went in there looking for 100g skeins of merino wool fingering yarn in USC colors. She took me over to the baby yarn section. I was puzzled, because baby yarn usually doesn't come in those colors. She then started looking for colors in an assortment of 50g skeins. I told her that I wanted 100g skeins, and she said she knew that. She then asked me what I was making, and I told her a scarf. She then said that fingering yarn was awful light for a scarf. I explained that I was making a Brioche scarf, and she looked puzzled. (Brioche is a technique where two colors of yarn are knit in the same row, but the strands are not held together. It's complicated to explain.) She questioned it again, and I explained again that it was a Brioche scarf, and she continued to pull out 50g skeins. I then repeated that I needed 100g skeins, and she said that she knew that, and that I would have to buy two of each, because fingering yarn doesn't come in 100g skeins. That's where the lie comes in. I was surprised that she would say that, and told her that lots of brands have fingering in 100g skeins, and mentioned some. She then said that she didn't carry any. That's when I realized she was just trying to sell me what she had in stock, regardless of whether it was what I wanted or not. I've gone in there several times looking for specific types of yarn, because they do have a good selection. But, her attitude is always snotty and know-it-all. And, this time, with COVID, and in their very narrow aisles, her husband made no attempt to keep 6 ft. away from me. He doesn't know where the stock is, and should have left the area when his wife had me follow her to the aisle she was looking in. This was the last time I will go in there, even if I'm desperate! read more

I can't imagine she wouldn't have it. (ok maybe not all the colors but she has tons of different brands, and a huge load of styles that you won't see in other stores.).... A younger guy was sitting at a table and even he offered to help, and I believe it was Edith's husband working the register. The biggest complain I had was parking but I found a space, thank goodness I have a small car. My old car would never have fit into the spaces. Edith knows everything about yarn, patterns and I have seen her fix complicated knitting issues on everything from blankets to sweaters. She is truly a master. Since she doesn't charge for sitting at her knitting table, she can only help you with projects made from yarn purchased at her store, which is common practice. You would think that since the bottom of my knitting bag held $500 worth of receipts I might get SOME leniency on "we help for free with yarn you purchase" ... I just don't like this place. Period. 1) They ignore you when you come in. I wasn't even sure if there was anyone working until I made my way past the mounds of disorganized yarn mish-moshed together with no price tags to the back of the store. The person working here was helping someone else who was obviously way more important than I was. At least they both thought so. 2) Did I mention nothing has a price tag on it? And don't bother asking. If you can get someones attention long enough, all you'll get is attitude and more attitude. Gosh, if you need to know the price you shouldn't be shopping here was the vibe I got. Well, excuuuse me, but I'm not going to pay self indulgent prices when I can go to a FRIENDLY knitting store and pay less, and have less dust on everything too. 3) The buttons look like they've been there since 1920. I mean it. They look OLD. The tubes they are in are old and yellowed. Even if the product is new, its just a horrible presentation. And, again, way over priced. $10 for four little pink bunny buttons? WTF. Really. 4) This is the most disorganized store I've ever been in. It's dusty, dirty and just plain messy. It's sad to see nice yarn die here. They just don't seem to care. About caring for their over-plentiful stock or their customers. Skeins were crammed haphazardly wherever they could find space. It didn't seem to make any sense. It wasn't organized by weight, color or any other way I could see. This store was even more disappointing because I brought my mom here when I came for the first and only time. We always hit up as many yarn stores as possible whenever she's visiting. Edith is very knowledgeable and is willing to help you step by step in getting whatever project you want accomplished. She will modify the pattern so it fits you perfectly. Now, to get to that place where you feel comfortable walking in, plopping down at the table, and getting down to business, depends on what your made of. If you're a delicate type, one for whom the attitude of others can have a devastating effect, at this store you may be SOL. I came to this shop frequently in 2004. I wanted to learn how to knit and this place offered to teach you how to knit for free so long as you purchased your yarn there. It can be intimidating at first. You walk into a back room and see a huge table surrounded with women sitting there chatting and knitting. I bought some yarn and needles, sat at the table and someone taught me right then and there. I was so excited! On Wednesday nights the store is open later and people bring food and wine. You get to hear a lot of celebrity gossip as most people there are either celebrities or work in the industry, which I enjoyed. I stopped knitting in 2006, but last week I had the urge to start again. I went in to the shop on a Wednesday afternoon and it felt like nothing had changed. The owners were very friendly and one of them helped me find the type of yarn I was looking for. I bought 3 skeins of multi-toned black marino wool yarn and 5 skeins of dark purple marino wool yarn- all imported from Italy- and it is such great quality! The yarn at other places just does not compare. I did not feel like I was being treated like dirt and I was still in their computer system! The owner actually welcomed me back and told me that he hopes I come around more often. I can understand how some people may go here and feel ignored or excluded because it's such a big scene and mostly everyone knows each other. If you're uncomfortable, then go somewhere else. I honestly don't think you'll be missed. The owners probably don't care about their reviews and writing such horrible things won't change the way they do business. This is really the only shop a knitter needs. Their selection of yarn is just holy-hell amazing. You'll get overwhelmed, because there is yarn yarn yarn everywhere you look! The staff is really helpful and knowledgeable. I went in last time with a sweater pattern, and when they didn't have the same brand listed in the pattern, they helped me find something A) I liked, and B) would work for the sweater. Their prices are pretty good. They carry a lot of nicer yarns, so if you're just looking for so-so quality to knit something where quality isn't a huge concern, you'd be better off just hitting up Michael's or something. Save your trips here for luxurious projects! This doesn't mean they are overly expensive; you just won't find anything dirt cheap. One thing I've noticed is their needles tend to be a bit more expensive here, so unless you're looking for some exquisitely-crafted polished wood needle, try to get that stuff at a discount store. I've never been to the store, but I bought some Knit-Lite light-up knitting needles for my mom from them. I called, and said I'd like to buy these needles, but I don't know what size to get her. Since my knitting adventure started, I went on a quest with a friend to experience the different local yarn shops (LYS) on the Westside and in the valley. I loved most of them, I felt the staff was warm and friendly. However, I had a different experience here. As I approached the door with my friend, I noticed a sign in the window: "Free lessons with purchase of yarn." Score! I could take advantage of that. See, I had recently started knitting and I was not quite comfortable in my skills. Any knowledge I could pick up would be very helpful. We walked in and there was yarn EVERYWHERE. I noticed another sign noting something along the lines of "Our prices are not marked, but they are the best. Ask cashier for price." I thought that was a little strange, but not a problem. I could imagine it would be difficult to put price tags on all this yarn. There was TONS of it. We were casually browsing around when a man pops out of nowhere. I assume he is the store owner. He asks if we need anything, and we make it very clear that we are just looking, not buying. I made the mistake of telling him we were beginners. He took it upon himself to try and tell us everything about yarn and knitting. While I appreciated the advice, I really was not there to be lectured about the difference between acrylic and natural fibers. Of course I know the difference, and I know why acrylic is cheap. He started taking us around the yarn-maze and showing us different fibers that he thought would be best. I appreciated that, but he wouldn't leave us alone. It was a bit much for me, being followed around like that. This store was pretty pricey, but they did have some really nice fibers. I do plan on coming back here when: 1) I have lots of money to spend (I cannot justify $45 for one scarf right now) 2) I am more experienced (Don't want to "practice" on expensive stuff, it's almost a waste) 3) I want a crazy fancy yarn for a crazy fancy pattern Overall, this is a great store for more advanced knitters. As a beginner, I found it unrealistic for my skill level, and a bit too intimidating. Perhaps down the road I will have a different experience. read more

Charming little shop with nice selection of yarns. No prices, which is a pet peeve. I later discovered that the yarn I bought had been previously returned as evidenced by the old, torn and taped label and it's discontinued. I feel it should have been discounted and marked "discontinued." Won't be returning. read more
