The waitress was friendly and kind but there was a little bit of a language barrier and our order was messed up and we were shorted items we ordered. She did her absolute best and was the only one waiting tables. Also the Happy Plate was $15.99!! I have never paid that for a plain happy plate, ever! We were shorted tortillas, sour cream and we got one small bowl of salsa to share and no little bowls to use for each person, just one small bowl to push around the table. The salads arrived in the small bowls you normally would have for each person to use for the salsa, now that is one tiny salad indeed. I think maybe they were short staffed. The veggies we got were not seasoned and were greasy. One person in our group order a burrito and it was not even toasted or browned, it was wrapped and thrown on the plate. Stumbled upon this place on the way to the Southern Miss baseball field. Happy to say it was a great find. The food is legit Mexican food, tamales with pork are good as an appetizer as they advertise them outside on the window. The mango aguas frescas or juice is very good and is served in a nice size mug. We had the taco plate with choice of three tacos, rice and beans. We tried the lengua, carnitas, carne asada and barbacoa. All are served on double corn tortillas with onions and cilantro. They have massive size Modelo beers and Coca Colas. They also have hangover soups on the weekend which are typical and $2 taco Tuesdays as advertised on their board. Good spot for Mexican cravings. read more

Food to go was horrible. Did not fill up side container even 1/2 full. We had five different types of tacos in 2 taco plates. All of the tacos were extremely dry and meat was burnt. The beans were so runny They had water floating on top of them and they only filled up container 1/2 the way. They put a couple tablespoons in each side. The pork tamale was also burnt so bad that the bottom was not edible it was too hard to eat. All I can say is run don't walk away from this place don't waste your money it's not worth it. For MS, this isn't bad Mexican food. We live in Texas, stopped for tacos and a quesadilla while passing through (can't screw those up.) The hot fresh chips and homemade salsa were a plus, the chewy grisly chicken was not. Also, it's my pet peeve when restaurants take things off the menu...but don't actually take them off the printed menus!!! They list "pulled chicken" as an option for all tacos and burritos, quesadillas, etc but it comes out as chopped, grilled chicken breast. I asked waitress to correct my order to "pulled chicken" per the menu, and that's when she informed me they no longer have pulled chicken Fast service, friendly otherwise. Cheap margaritas too. The food that we got was delicious. The 3 stars are because they were out of so many things and we didn't get exactly what we wanted. We got partial items. But we agreed that was okay. The star of the show was the tacos (we had both beef and Carnitas). The meat was seasoned beautifully and so delicious! My son had a burrito, and it was good. They were out of Queso Cheese and we tried to order the sampler appetizer but they were out of most of the items that come on that. They were out of several beverages as well. I hope to come back again and sample more items that will be available. I will update my review after. The service was very slow, but they were really nice. This is the most authentic (and best) Mexican (NOT Tex-Mex) joint we have found in town. The tacos are properly served on fresh corn tortillas and garnished with chopped white onions and cilantro along with a fresh lime wedge on the side, as they should be. (You can get flour with more Americanized toppings, but I would encourage everyone to try the corn). They also have traditional Mexican hangover- (or any malady) relieving soups like menudo and del mar available on the weekends; the fiancee loves these. You can get your choice of verde or roja salsas, and both are solid and nicely hot. I prefer the tangy verde, while the SO prefers the smokier and slightly hotter red. For those of you who are not familiar with the meats (carnitas, tripas, lengua, barbacoa, and so on), they will make anything with a shredded chicken filling, similar to a tinga. I've had the tacos, tortas, soups, and tamales, and I would recommend them all. It's so nice to have solid Mexican food here that isn't smothered in cheap, cheesy glop. I've yet to try the desserts, but I'll edit and report back when I do. While you're eating, you can enjoy an agua fresca, Mexican soda, or a cold cerveza. In short, if you're expecting bottomless chips served with mild salsa, check that desire at the door of this bright hole-in-the-wall. Instead, look forward to delicious and unpretentious Mexican food that would be right at home in TX, NM, CA, or Mexico itself. My only wish is for elotes, Mexican street corn! read more

One word: yikes. I'll start from the beginning. So this is the first Mexican restaurant that I've been to that you have to order and pay for a dip to get chips. That's fine, I was going to get queso anyway. But I also wanted salsa, which is usually complimentary, so I asked for that after the waitress came with the chips and queso. Here's where the problem came. The chips with thick, stale, and shiny from the oil they were fried in, the queso was room temperature, and the salsa was legitimately liquid with a diced onion or two laying sadly at the bottom. Okay, so maybe that's not their specialty. Onto the entree. I ordered a steak burrito with rice and beans in the burrito. I have not had a more bland, flavorless entree at a Mexican restaurant before. There was no flavor. None. Zero. Zilch. The steak was completely unseasoned and the shredded cheddar cheese that was sprinkled on top was not melted all the way. 0/10 do not recommend. Eat here at your own risk. Yeet. read more

It's been a while... not sure when the exact date me and my husband were eating here. I just remember, it was Friday evening. The service was good. The restaurant atmosphere was nice. I ordered Quesadilla and my husband ordered soft tacos mix. The portion was not too much and not too little. I like their chili sauce. Their chili sauce was the best! After 50 years of eating Mexican Food, I found out today that I do not like "Authentic" Mexican Food, at least not at La Mexicana. I ordered the Fajita Mix (Steak Chicken and Shrimp) dinner for $14 dollars, which I thought was a good price until I saw the small portions,and little fajita flavor. The meal was served too cool and took over 30 minutes to get, Our other meal was a simple two taco meal for $6.99 which ended up being 8,99 because one was a shrimp taco (would not have been a problem if the waitress would have mentioned the extra charge). They could be charging double the price in other cities in the country, but they are not, which is awesome. Carne Asada burrito and tacos are the bomb. Had much higher hopes for this one based on other comments. For starters, the salsa was actually good. What wasn't was having to order (and PAY) for a serving of chips and salsa. And the chips were so oily! - it never dried. Different thicknesses meant some were hard and some not cooked enough. Food was ok, just ok. My son orders chicken quesadillas everywhere. He wasn't impressed. I had Mexican/street tacos and waited, and waited, and waited (server was MIA for ten). I asked the bartender if they came with a spicy salsa or if we needed to buy that, too. They DO come with- two bottles actually, a milder tomatillo salsa that was GREAT and a thinner red spicy sauce (not like a salsa). My server just hadn't brought it with the meal. This place is the best! By far the best Mexican food in Hattiesburg, and some of the best Ive ever had personally. The tacos al pastor are amazing, and everything is always so fresh. Yes you do have to pay a few bucks if you want chips, but they come freshly deep fried, warm, and crispy and are absolutely incredible. Not only is it amazing food, it is also very cheap. You cant beat $1.75 for an authentic Mexican street taco. I lived back in Southern Utah and Arizona my whole life, and have eaten authentic Mexican food for a long time, and this is basically as good as it gets (a close second to Tacos El Gordo in Las Vegas). read more

Extra for chips and salsa which as green not traditional red. Overpriced and then there was only one table eating other than us in the restaurant took forever to get chips and salsa we had to pay for all because the excuse was the waitress was "too busy".
