Upon pulling into the parking lot I could smell the aroma from there. The parking lot was very clean and free of potholes. As we walked in the greeter was very helpful and courteous. He seated us at a booth that was closer to the back. It was nice and quiet. The atmosphere was very casual. The bathrooms were clean and tidy. It was well lit and inviting. We got our menus and he took our drink orders. The food and drinks were amazing. We had 2 for 1 margaritas. They did not disappoint! The chimichanga was nicely toasted so that the cheese and sauce did not make it soggy. My friend's quesadilla made me want to get one too. There was so much food that neither of us could finish our meal. The wait staff were very attentive and extremely helpful. The prices were very reasonable. This is as recommended by our contractor! We got here early on a Friday night, they had chips and Salsa on our table before we opened our menus! We both ordered the medium margaritas, they are grande!!!! This is the biggest margarita I have every seen! The food was good too? I loved the ceviche and garlic shrimp!!! My husband had a fajita burrito. I think he wanted to lick the plate!!! We are use to eating Mexican food in California so this was great for us, it just lacked cilantro, which I love. California Mexican puts cilantro on everything good if you like it but bad if you don't! My husband doesn't like it. I can't believe this place has had bad reviews can't wait to go again! The meat was all dry, no seasoning whatsoever. The waiters didn't even come back and ask how the food was, did we need anything else. So finnnalllly he comes back I told him was not happy with the food. He goes "oh sorry the kitchen close". I said oookay, then he goes get manager. I repeat myself again to her, about the food. I had food delivered for lunch from here. I ordered a shrimp taco salad. Normally when you get a taco salad from places its huge and loaded. There was very little lettuce or tomatoes. The description said sour cream and guacamole would be on the side, but was in the salad. The salad was good but disappointing. The cheese dip is pretty good. read more

Excellent Mexican food. The cheese enchiladas are really good, and the same is true for the refried beans. The chips are warm and the salsa is fresh. The service is usually prompt and friendly. The iced tea is the pretty bad. I don't know if they are using the same tea leaves over and over, but the tea is the weakest I've ever had. So, the food is wonderful, but order a soda or a mixed drink. I hope they eventually get their act together on the tea! read more

I was coming in with my husband to meet up with our friends. The place was nice. The atmosphere was good and relaxing. We were busy talking, so I didn't notice if they played music or not. They served tortilla chips and salsa. The salsa was watery and tasteless that I had to add a little black peppers for a kick. We ordered lunch fajitas mixed chicken and steak for share with my husband. And added Spanish rice on the side. The lunch fajitas were coming with Spanish rice, refried beans, salad and guacamole. It tasted Ok, not really special. The rice was cooked perfect. But, the refried beans was a bit tasteless and sticky. We may return someday for trying other menu. They have many choices. read more

Oh Rio Grande, how I wanted to enjoy your food, but alas, I could not. I've been here twice, and wasn't impressed with their food during either visits. The first time I went, the food was just okay. I ordered a burrito with rice and beans, and when it was served, I was very surprised by how small the portion was. The burrito was okay, the beans were decent and the rice was bland. I kind of felt like I was eating styrofoam. However, the service was really good and the server was nice. He checked up on us a couple of times. Today, my boyfriend and I decided to try this place again. We're both big believers in trying something more than once to see if we like (or don't like) something. After all, every cook, chef, server, etc. has their bad days, right? Well, today was even worst than our first visit there. We ordered burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, and tacos. We also ordered queso. When the queso was brought out to us, we were surprised out how fast our server had brought it to us...until we tried it. It was cold, watery and didn't taste like queso. It tasted like they melted a tablespoon of velveeta in a cup of milk. It just wasn't good. The rest of our food was bland and outright gross. I think the cooks must be anti-seasoning because I didn't get a hint of cumin, pepper, chili powder or any type of spice whatsoever. The enchilada sauce tasted like tomato sauce. It was just all very horrible. Our server was terrible this time around. He never came to check up on us, and the entire staff seemed to be unhappy. My boyfriend and I ALWAYS tip, but not this time. It didn't make sense to tip for gross food and a lack of service. There weren't very many customers there, so the lack of service was inexcusable. There are lots of great Mexican restaurants to eat at in Hattiesburg, but Rio Grande is not one of them. read more

It takes a lot for me to give a place a negative review...well this place did it for me. First of all the food came out waay too fast on a hot plate but yet the food was cold (obviously microwaved) Being born and raised in TX I kind of know good Mexican food. Secondly, rice and beans ordered separately?!? The so called beef tasted like what cardboard smells like. 13 dollars later I left just as hungry as I was when I arrived. According to the menu the burrito we ordered had beans, ground beef, and cheese inside and was served with lettuce, tomatoes and guacamole (the only reason I ordered it). It came out COVERED in a red taco sauce and the waiter said they had NO guacamole. He did not tell us that while ordering or before filling our order. The burrito was soggy with sauce (which wasn't on menu) and we basically ate the meat from the inside... we would have eaten the beans as well, but those weren't on there either! The tiny bit of cheese on top was scraped off with the red sauce! The guy did not even offer an apology - probably because he couldn't understand us. We just paid and left. We wont go back! I have eaten here before and enjoyed it, but my last visit wasn't satisfactory. When I first entered, there seemed to be a extreme body odor throughout the restaurant. My mother commented about it, and I didn't even bring it up to her. I also did not enjoy my food. For some reason, the chicken didn't taste right; it seemed to have a fishy taste to it. Having recently moved to the area from Baton Rouge, my husband & I (seniors) have eaten here 4-5 times and thought it was the best Mexican food ever. Until today (about 2:15 pm). When the waiter brought me my food, he asked my husband what he had ordered & had to return to the kitchen to order it. I immediately ate my beef enchiladas, which were cold. About 10 minutes later, the waiter returned with my husband's food...When a man who seemed to be the owner/manager came by asking how our food was, I very nicely, quietly & with a smile told him mine was cold & added that we love the restaurant, that I always order the same thing, & that this was the first time that had ever happened. I was shocked when he launched into a lengthy explanation of how that was because my food was ready & waiting for my husband's food to finish cooking before our food was brought out -- NOT TRUE! (I have never heard of any restaurant making excuses for cold food for any reason!) He was rude & unapologetic. I said nothing, but he lost our business, and I will tell others about our negative experience there. read more

I, personally, think the tea is great.. so it may be a matter of Southern style taste (I'm a cajun gal..) that the last reviewer didn't like. Otherwise, my family and I eat here at least once a week. I usually always get guacamole tacos with a margarita and that fills me up (plus it's healthy and cheap) but if I feel like a fatty and want something more, I usually get the two burrito combo which is SO worth the money splitting (or eating alone.. if you're a fatty like me..) **note: burritos come with beans inside for filler but you can request no beans. The margaritas here are the best. Not too strong but certainly not weak. Everything comes out FAST. Extremely fast and perfectly cooked. And the staff is so friendly. They usually come by and make sure we're ok, right on time when we need something. They've actually stayed open later for us, even held the door open when they were closing at that time. I will never go here again. My wife and I wanted to try the fajitas, so we asked the server about the potion sizes on those. The server pointed to an item on the menu that was a double portion, so we ordered that. The food came out in less than 5 minutes - now don't get me wrong, I'm all about quick service, but this was way too quick to be fresh. The waiter brings out a huge plate piled high with vegatables, rice, and a tiny bit of meat. No tortillas, no nothing, just a huge plate of vegatables and rice that smelled bad and tasted bad. It looked like they just scraped everything off the bottom of the barrel and slapped it on the plate. I asked the waiter to bring us some tortillas, because how the hell else are you supposed to eat 'fajitas', dig into them with a fork? He brings ME three tortillas, but none for my wife. I asked him to bring some for her, so he did. I didn't want to pay for this at all. I talked to the owner about it, and he explained that what we ordered was not fajitas. Okay, I said, then why the hell did your waiter suggest that item when we were specifically asking him for fajitas? I mean, who the hell serves something like that - just a big plate full of nasty vegetables and tiny, shriveled little pieces of meat - no matter what you order? Isn't presentation supposed to be everything? We only ate a few bites of this crap. When the server asked us if we wanted a to-go box, I had to keep myself from laughing.
