"La Mex" used to be the hidden gem, hole in the wall mexican place of Richmond. Not so much anymore. The burrito quality has gone down a lot since those days. The waiting/dining area is sometimes smokey to the point of causing tears. It has the "underground" vibe unironically, so it's hard to knock the ambiance. The only thing La Mex has going for it is the food and that's not really so good anymore. read more

As you can read from the other reviews, this place is not much to look at from the outside. And I don't blame you for not wanting to come in, but if you do, be prepared to dine on some fantastic, Mexican cuisine. I've had everything from burritos, tacos, and platters. Everything is good. Not to mention the two sauces that you see in my pictures. They might be the best sauces I have ever had. They have a large selection of cold, bottled drinks, including Jarritos. Behind the counter, they do have Horchata and fantastic aqua de Jamaica. The service is always fantastic and everyone is always so polite. You order at the counter and help yourself do a drink, then have a seat and they will bring the food to you. You pay when you are done. Lunch time is normally busy so be prepared for a small wait. After getting past the rough exterior of La Mexicana you'll find a gem of a Mexican restaurant. La Mexicana does have a learning curb if you've never been there before. You walk towards the food counter, place your order, get the food, and then pay at the end. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak burrito. It's very large, has incredible flavor, and they don't skimp on any of the ingredients. I really had a wonderful experience. Only thing holding this restaurant from a 5 star, is really just it being cash only. I normally don't carry cash at all, but luckily I had a little in my wallet at the time. I'd compare this restaurant to Pedro Martinez. Just a classic, old school, iconic figure that's an absolute legend. Will be back for sure!! read more

One of the jewels in the crown of Richmond's Hispanic restaurants. Some even call it 'The Muffler Shop' because the location used to be exactly that. My, how it has changed. The burritos are favorites of many of my friends and co-workers. I love their pastor, asada, and lengua tacos myself. Come early as they get pretty busy at lunch. Their homemade salsas are the best in town, hands down. A must try, whether you live here or are just visiting. The interior reminds me of a lot of little taco shop/fiends places in Mexico and south of that. read more

La Mex has the best burritos in the world, and that is not an exaggeration. The La Mex burrito is the thing I miss the most about living in Richmond. To this day I cannot eat a burrito from any other restaurant because I know it will be a disappointment compared to a La Mex burrito. The ingredients are always fresh, the salsa is the best you will have ever tasted, and the portion size is huge. For $9 you can get a large burrito enough for two meals for me; hence its popularity with local college kids. The inside isn't anything fancy, it's kind of a hole in the wall place with a small Mexican grocery section. Pay by cash if you can, there is a 25 cent charge if you pay by card, and there are no signs that tell you this. I was craving tacos and a trip to Cincinnati or Dayton or Indianapolis seemed out of the question with the $0.30 price hike on gasoline since the weekend. La Mexicana has awesome tacos. I can put them up against those from El Rodeo and Hacienda El Camino Real (Cinco de Mayo?) any day and La Mexicana wins. She is a tough competitor. I thought that the options were a bit thin. I guess I should have looked over the menu again, but I didn't see fewer (1 or 2) tacos combos on the menu. $7.00 for three tacos isn't horrible, considering I got the grilled steak (asada) selection, although the meat was a bit chewy. I usually use ground sirloin at home and avoid meat problems. Once again, I'm missing the lettuce and tomatoes that I had growing up and I've gotten other places, but the onion and cilantro were appreciated. The taste reminds you of what you're missing other places, and the verde (green) salsa added to the mixture in a most positive way. I later tried the Cuban sandwich/Torta Cubana and it wasn't much like any Cuban sandwich I'd had in Florida, so I'm not sure where they got their recipe but Cubans To Go on Lee Road in Orlando still has the best Cuban sandwich north of Miami. Too bad, La Mexicana. Of course, the decor does not add anything positive, but there weren't extra creatures running around the place that I could see, and they had the county health certificate right out front for all to see. Ask places like Golden Corral to do the same. If people are looking for a grocery store, they're out of luck except for canned and bottled goods. If they're looking for friendly service and good food, this place is better than the other choices. I'm not sure whether their English is slim or it was just me, but we both ended up speaking Spanglish (Espanglés!) and it worked out just fine. Update 2013.08.21: I was in San Jose, California a little over a week ago and tonight, I was wondering how La Mexicana stacked up to the tacos I had there, since the other places in town are really bad. So, I got more Carne Asada tacos--I still wish they came as 1 or 2--and they were just as good but there was too much food. The tacos in San Jose use miniature tortillas but they're $1.75 or $1.85 each, where I went. Three were plenty, and two of the larger size tacos would have been fine here. Be sure to order Supreme instead of Regular, since the salsa doesn't have all the stuff in it. I didn't want the cheese but lots of people like cheese with their tacos--I just prefer the lettuce, tomatoes, and onions--the way we got them at home, in San Jose. read more

I make frequent trips between Indianapolis and Dayton but usually don't stop for lunch until I get to Dayton. I hadn't found anyplace along the way that was worth exiting the interstate for, and Dayton has several restaurants that I really like, so I usually wait until I arrive to dine. However, this time I missed breakfast and was wondering if there was anyplace halfway decent to grab lunch. I was craving Mexican so I searched Yelp and discovered La Mexicana. I hit the link for directions and made my way to this dicey, divey, hole-in-the-wall grocery and restaurant. Not being familiar with Richmond I never would have found it without GPS. I am so glad I did, though, because La Mexicana turned out to be a real find. After removing all valuables from my car I entered the restaurant and was greeted by a very friendly employee. He pointed out the menus and explained all the burrito options. I ordered a burrito that was stuffed with cheese, avocado, rice, onions, lettuce, tomatoes and cilantro. My burrito was prepared to order, very quickly, and it was huge. Seriously, enough to feed two! All the ingredients were fresh and tasty. I chose the spicy red sauce and it was indeed spicy and flavorful. The rice was excellent! Often it seems that rice stuffed in a burrito is bland and used a just a filler for people who don't want meat in their burrito. This rice was so good that I could have lapped it out of a bowl. Happily. I will be returning soon to try try the tacos. Everything I saw being served looked absolutely authentic and delicious. read more

Wow, talk about real authentic Mexican food. I love Mexican food and it seems that it's hard to find. And when you do find it it's TEXMEX and not real Mexican. The prices were out of this world cheap and the portion size was HUGE! I ordered a chicken burrito and it was like the size of two chipotle burritos. I couldn't even finish it all in one setting. They make your food fresh to order and you can see and smell them cooking your food. The food come out piping hot which is fantastic. And the quality is just over all good. Yes, the place is bare bones. It's not trying to impress you aesthetically. It's not going to win a decor award. The first time you go you might be wondering if you found the right place. We are always excited to see authentic Mexican food in Indiana. When passing through Richmond we couldn't pass up the chance to get some tacos from an authentic spot in a smaller Indiana town. Overall the food was pretty good, but the atmosphere of the restaurant unfortunately detracted pretty heavily from the experience. The adobada tacos were very good. They had excellent flavor and these tacos are not a common variety as far as I have seen in Indiana. I would definitely recommend them over the al pastor, which weren't bad but definitely weren't among the better end of the tacos al pastor I have had. (They did get points for having pineapple in them though.) My mom's Chino's quesadilla was pretty good too. Overall not the greatest Mexican we have had but still a solid 4/5. The place itself was what brought this from 4 to 3. If I lived in Richmond I would definitely order takeout rather than eat inside the restaurant. If it had looked inside like the pictures that have been posted on Yelp, it would have been fine. We're completely fine with a no-frills environment. I wasn't even bothered by the ceiling light flickering on and off. But here, there was dirt and grime built up where the floors meet the walls. The tables were decently clean, but sitting in there looking at the dirty floors and walls of the dining area was enough to detract from the experience. Normally I don't comment on the ambience of restaurants but here it needed to be noted because it affected our experience. Allie has pretty much nailed it. La Mexicana is attached to a rundown body shop... in fact, if I wasn't looking for it, I would have driven right past it. It is probably the divey-est of dives I've ever been. But the atmosphere isn't why you go. You go for the huge burritos and the cheap prices. I got the pineapple and onion burrito - small size - based on several recommendations. While good, I think I'll go with the Pastor tacos next time (marinated pork along with the pineapple and onions, served with a generous helping of cilantro and onions on the traditional corn tortillas), which may bump my rating up from a 3 to a 4. The burrito tasted good, but less is definitely more in the toppings department and the way the burritos were cooked made them similar in texture and taste to won-tons or Chinese dumplings. Do what you will with that information. But yes, the people that run the place are very nice (what's up, free pack of Mexican Chiclets?!) and if I'm ever in the market for fruit-flavored candy with chili powder mixed in, I know exactly where I'm headed. read more

I hate Mexican food I just can't eat it it's not for me but this place is the only Mexican food I'll ever eat it's just that good and even though the restaurant does not look so well on the inside I let atleast 5 really nice people who just walked inside this place despite its looks, has to be my favorite restaurant I've ever been to and I've been to some very fancy places I give it a 5 out of 5 because looks aren't everything and there food is genuinely the best around. The portions are also really big for there price. the staff is also incredibly polite since I do not know much Spanish at all they helped me pick the food I wanted due to my picky eating I 100% recommend this restaurant mostly for the non vegans sorry guys. Admittedly, this place is unbelievable sketchy on the outside. As for the convenient store aspect of it, it's a lot of random mexican candies and some ok produce and some baked goods that look like they have been there for years. But, they make some amazing burritos. They're super cheap and super giant and super delicious. My favorite is steak, but they have good vegetarian options. Specifically an awesome pineapple and onion one. The employees are all super nice too. We moved from California to Indiana about 5 months ago and this place is a GEM! I had lost hope when I tried all the other Mexican restaurants in town... and then La Mexicana came along! We finally took the plunge into La Mexicana and we were so impressed. It was the best burritos we've ever had. We had the steak and chorizo, and both were excellent. They are ENORMOUS burritos, where half is definitely enough for an entire meal. I can't imagine how big the tortilla is that makes this monster - and it was a delicious tortilla. They wrapped it so well too, unlike Chipotle or Hot Head (both of which we really like, but they both have messy burritos). The salsas were amazing as well, both the green and the red. The green is made with avocado and a medium heat, and the red salsa is tradition and pretty spicy. It just all came together perfectly. All I can think of now, is when can we go back and how many burritos should we buy next time. read more

Amazing tacos. We stopped here on our way to Maryland from Indiana. I spent several years in California, eating awesome tacos from people that know how to make them right. When we moved to NY, I almost instantly missed the tacos I'd grown to love. When my husband suggested this place, I was happy to try it out, because the pictures of tacos they made reminded me so much of California. It's not super-close to the interstate, but it's relatively easy to find. They have some items on their shelves, but I'm guessing they make most of their money on their tacos. My husband got pork tacos, and I got the chorizo tacos. Perfect, spicy, balanced. Each order came with 3 tacos, and given our massive Christmas dinner the day before, three was just enough to fill us up. Prices are reasonable, and the service was quick and polite. Just be careful of the step to get inside - I didn't notice it on my way in and tripped over it a bit. Didn't fall, but it caught my foot a bit. read more

The outside of the building isn't much to look at, but we didn't let that stop us. I ordered the steak tacos , and my husband ordered chicken tacos - both supreme of course - and we shared. The chicken tacos were very good, but the steak was heaven. They were the best steak tacos I've ever had. Supreme is lettuce, tomato, cheese, cilantro and onion.
