After getting past the rough exterior of La Mexicana you'll find a gem of a Mexican restaurant. La Mexicana does have a learning curb if you've never been there before. You walk towards the food counter, place your order, get the food, and then pay at the end. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak burrito. It's very large, has incredible flavor, and they don't skimp on any of the ingredients. I really had a wonderful experience. Only thing holding this restaurant from a 5 star, is really just it being cash only. I normally don't carry cash at all, but luckily I had a little in my wallet at the time. I'd compare this restaurant to Pedro Martinez. Just a classic, old school, iconic figure that's an absolute legend. Will be back for sure!!

The sopes here are a good choice packed with flavor.

I have been coming here for years and each time is better than the next. The food is great and always plenty for left overs. The staff is always so happy and very helpful in deciding for me when I don't know what I want. You got to try it. Very friendly and good people.

La Mex has the best burritos in the world, and that is not an exaggeration. The La Mex burrito is the thing I miss the most about living in Richmond. To this day I cannot eat a burrito from any other restaurant because I know it will be a disappointment compared to a La Mex burrito. The ingredients are always fresh, the salsa is the best you will have ever tasted, and the portion size is huge. For $9 you can get a large burrito enough for two meals for me; hence its popularity with local college kids. The inside isn't anything fancy, it's kind of a hole in the wall place with a small Mexican grocery section. Pay by cash if you can, there is a 25 cent charge if you pay by card, and there are no signs that tell you this. If you are driving through Richmond and are looking for a place for a quick and cheap meal, this is the place to go for sure.

Steak tacos deluxe. $7.00. Can't beat it. Amazing taste.

Best authentic Mexican in Richmond. Has El Rodeo and El Bronco beat by miles! Large portions, tasty food, friendly staff, and can't beat the prices. I can't wait to be back to try more! Don't be intimidated by the exterior- the interior is simple and clean. They put all their energy into the food. And that's alright with me! Worth it!

I was craving tacos and a trip to Cincinnati or Dayton or Indianapolis seemed out of the question with the $0.30 price hike on gasoline since the weekend. La Mexicana has awesome tacos. I can put them up against those from El Rodeo and Hacienda El Camino Real (Cinco de Mayo?) any day and La Mexicana wins. She is a tough competitor. I thought that the options were a bit thin. I guess I should have looked over the menu again, but I didn't see fewer (1 or 2) tacos combos on the menu. $7.00 for three tacos isn't horrible, considering I got the grilled steak (asada) selection, although the meat was a bit chewy. I usually use ground sirloin at home and avoid meat problems. Once again, I'm missing the lettuce and tomatoes that I had growing up and I've gotten other places, but the onion and cilantro were appreciated. The taste reminds you of what you're missing other places, and the verde (green) salsa added to the mixture in a most positive way. I later tried the Cuban sandwich/Torta Cubana and it wasn't much like any Cuban sandwich I'd had in Florida, so I'm not sure where they got their recipe but Cubans To Go on Lee Road in Orlando still has the best Cuban sandwich north of Miami. Too bad, La Mexicana. Of course, the decor does not add anything positive, but there weren't extra creatures running around the place that I could see, and they had the county health certificate right out front for all to see. Ask places like Golden Corral to do the same. If people are looking for a grocery store, they're out of luck except for canned and bottled goods. If they're looking for friendly service and good food, this place is better than the other choices. I'm not sure whether their English is slim or it was just me, but we both ended up speaking Spanglish (Espanglés!) and it worked out just fine. Update 2013.08.21: I was in San Jose, California a little over a week ago and tonight, I was wondering how La Mexicana stacked up to the tacos I had there, since the other places in town are really bad. So, I got more Carne Asada tacos--I still wish they came as 1 or 2--and they were just as good but there was too much food. The tacos in San Jose use miniature tortillas but they're $1.75 or $1.85 each, where I went. Three were plenty, and two of the larger size tacos would have been fine here. Be sure to order Supreme instead of Regular, since the salsa doesn't have all the stuff in it. I didn't want the cheese but lots of people like cheese with their tacos--I just prefer the lettuce, tomatoes, and onions--the way we got them at home, in San Jose.

Looks questionable from the outside but go in anyway, you won't be sorry!

I make frequent trips between Indianapolis and Dayton but usually don't stop for lunch until I get to Dayton. I hadn't found anyplace along the way that was worth exiting the interstate for, and Dayton has several restaurants that I really like, so I usually wait until I arrive to dine. However, this time I missed breakfast and was wondering if there was anyplace halfway decent to grab lunch. I was craving Mexican so I searched Yelp and discovered La Mexicana. I hit the link for directions and made my way to this dicey, divey, hole-in-the-wall grocery and restaurant. Not being familiar with Richmond I never would have found it without GPS. I am so glad I did, though, because La Mexicana turned out to be a real find. After removing all valuables from my car I entered the restaurant and was greeted by a very friendly employee. He pointed out the menus and explained all the burrito options. I ordered a burrito that was stuffed with cheese, avocado, rice, onions, lettuce, tomatoes and cilantro. My burrito was prepared to order, very quickly, and it was huge. Seriously, enough to feed two! All the ingredients were fresh and tasty. I chose the spicy red sauce and it was indeed spicy and flavorful. The rice was excellent! Often it seems that rice stuffed in a burrito is bland and used a just a filler for people who don't want meat in their burrito. This rice was so good that I could have lapped it out of a bowl. Happily. I will be returning soon to try try the tacos. Everything I saw being served looked absolutely authentic and delicious.

Found this gem while passing through Richmond, Indiana. The best authentic mexican food we've had. The staff was so welcoming and friendly, very personable. You will not regret stopping in. Super affordable!

Wow, talk about real authentic Mexican food. I love Mexican food and it seems that it's hard to find. And when you do find it it's TEXMEX and not real Mexican. The prices were out of this world cheap and the portion size was HUGE! I ordered a chicken burrito and it was like the size of two chipotle burritos. I couldn't even finish it all in one setting. They make your food fresh to order and you can see and smell them cooking your food. The food come out piping hot which is fantastic. And the quality is just over all good. If you are looking for a great Mexican restaurant, this is the place to go! By far the best food and will definitely be returning for more. A major plus: all their meals come with avocado

The picture doesn't do justice. I ordered a steak salad. They let me choose my toppings I ordered guacamole and salsa. This is one of the best steak salads I have ever had. The flavor was interesting the salsa and guacamole were good. This place is amazing! Don't let the outside of the building fool you. Great find.

The interior is very nice, with a high ceiling and tasteful decor. The booths and tables are solid and spacious. Everything was spotlessly clean. I was promptly seated and served chips and salsa. The salsa was thinner than I prefer but made up for it with excellent flavor and a bit of heat. I ordered Huevos Rancheros from the lunch menu, and it was delicious. Refried beans has a nice texture and really good flavor. Portion size was very generous, especially for a lunch menu item. Service was friendly and efficient. The dinner menu featured some unique specialties. There were many seafood entrees, including one I would like to try called Wero. It featured grilled tilapia, scallops, shrimp, and pico. I'll try that for sure on my next visit. There are also burritos and enchiladas with unique ingredients. Many vegetarian options too. Prices are very reasonable.

There are two smaller local establishments in Richmond that serve authentic Mexican dishes with flavors, freshness, and quality worthy of five stars. (Well, almost...I really didn't know.) Phew! I've been to all three locations in town but this one seems just right. Of course, if they would change locations to accommodate more customers, they might have similar trouble that the east side location is having. They had a decal on the exterior window saying "Yelp users love us! Read the reviews!" which was amusing and so true. Three of us went today but one was running late. They seated us and someone brought two sets of utensils, instead of three sets. Oops. They got the drink order just right, though, and apparently listened carefully. For some strange reason, people think I want a diet drink and this time I ordered (and got!) sweet iced tea. We got the food within a reasonable amount of time, but I've seen other times when this didn't happen at either location. That they were on top of things at just past noon is incredible. If they'd brought an extra set of utensils, we'd have been set. I wish they could apply their techniques to the Chinese and Italian restaurants in town. I'd ordered an enchilada, rice, and beans but I was surprised when they didn't ask if I wanted beef, chicken, or cheese. Maybe, I look like a beef person? Mooooo! I also noticed that they haven't returned to the shredded beef they were using a couple of years ago. Obviously, to maintain pricing, they've made a compromise. You'd think that they'd default to cheese, but considering the price of cheese is probably double the price of ground beef, I suppose I can understand why. Except for the lack of utensils, it all went quite well. I can overlook that in light of everything else because service is generally flawless at this location.

I am from the area but now live near San Francisco. On trips back here, El Bronco West had become one of my favorite restaurants in the area. The fact that I was trying to host an event here would need more than a 24-hour call ahead. The reservation for my party was simply a sticky note on the wall behind the cash register. When I arrived 30 minutes early to be able to look out for and greet people as they came, nothing had been set up in advance. I sensed they were waiting to see if we actually showed up. To me, a group of 22 paying customers would be treated more professionally, but it was what it was. The service and food were okay, but the real fiasco occurred when they came to put the sombrero on me and sing in celebration of my birthday. I had seen this before and had really not wanted it, but I forgot to mention my decline and figured I would just go with it and get it over with. I was not expecting to be sternly sat down and have my bearded face smeared with whipped cream. They clearly do not realize this is an act of assault! No one has the right to put their hands on you in an offensive manner. I was absolutely furious and in a state of shock. My love of this restaurant and desire to go back absolutely died in that moment. I really thought I was doing something very good for the establishment by bringing in a group of 22 people. But instead of being treated with honor and respect, I was sharply told to sit down to be put on display and have my entire face slathered with whipped cream. No one in my party, with the exception of one, was amused. Everyone in attendance, being from this area, will most likely be deterred from future visits. I am all for celebration and having a good time, but this was way too extreme. It went too far and was a complete violation of my boundaries, ruining my birthday celebration. One of my group recounted that she had been at El Bronco West during a lunchtime visit and witnessed a woman being assaulted with whipped cream, which smeared and ruined her makeup. Being at work for the day and having yourself desecrated is an act of violence. My guest noted that she, too, was furious. This proves my point that this restaurant prefers its sophomoric pranks over the sensitivities of its customers. Afterward, I spoke to our waiter and told him how angry I was and that this was too extreme. The waiter apologized, but it was too late; the damage had already been done. He did say he would tell the manager, but two days after the event, I have heard nothing. My memory of my special occasion is scarred in ruin! I will never return to this restaurant again! This establishment is clearly out of touch with its clientele. Be forewarned, if you plan to spend a special occasion at El Bronco, tell them no singing unless you wish to have your face slathered with cream. Debéis estar más atentos al respeto vuestros clients!
