Ice cream. Paletas. And a wonderful thing called a Mangonada. We just moved to Nashville - about a mile from Nolensville Road - and so we've been exploring some of the food options in that area! And La Michoacana Golden was a treat! My fiance tried some of the chocolate flan ice cream (which he liked) and an orea paleta (which he loved). They have a TON of flavors of ice cream - from your more sorbet options (mango, tamarind) to creamy options (rum and raisin, cheesecake) to very unique options that I can't wait to try (tequila?)! They have a great variety of paleta options as well! And I tried a Mangonada - layers of sorbet, chamoy sauce, chili powder, and fresh squeezed lemon juice. And a tamarind candy on top. I got a medium - which allows you to choose three flavors of sorbet; I went with mango, pineapple, and tamarind. There were four or five other flavors as well (including guava, which I wanted, but wasn't quite frozen enough yet). Next time I'm doing guava and mango. Chamoy sauce is a pickled fruit sauce spiced with chiles, fyi. It was great - sweet, sour, spicy, salty. And it reminded me of home - I just moved to Nashville from Texas and I'm teensy bit homesick for somethings (many of which I'm finding on Nolensville Road). La Michoacana Golden is a family spot - while we were there, several moms and kids came in for paletas or ice cream. The women behind the counter were friendly, and the service was fast! The menu is in Spanish and English. And there is plenty of seating, and a ton of parking in the lot in front of the shopping center. Don't be fooled by the bland looking outside of this store. When you go inside, there is a colorful rainbow of images of ice cream/paletas on the counters and on the walls next to the tables. They offer fruit-based and creamy-based paletas (Mexican popsicles) that are works of art. It is the first thing you can see in the freezers when you walk in. The way the pieces of fruit were laid out in some of the popsicles stood out to me and showed that the employees really value presentation of their products. La Michoacana Golden also sells various Mexican drinks and food items, but my parents and I primarily came here for the ice cream! The employees didn't mind letting my parents and me try multiple flavors of ice cream. They not only have typical flavors you can find at other ice cream shops, but more exotic flavors worth a taste such as mamey or gansito. In their oreo ice cream and ice creams with cakes, there was A LOT of oreos and cake pieces present. This place does not skimp out on giving you bang for your buck. I got gansito. The ice cream was yellow and tasted kind of like a buttery cream. My favorite part of it was the pieces of chocolate covered vanilla cake and swirls of berry spread throughout. This added a nice spongy texture to the smooth ice cream. I subtracted 1 star from this review bc there were 3 employees present when we walked in, but no one said hi or asked us if we wanted to try ice cream until 2 minutes later. We were the only ones in at the time. Additionally the gansito ice cream, while delicious, was a little too sweet for my palate. Lastly, my mom's coconut ice cream was kind of melting when it was scooped out, so it was too soft. read more

I pride myself on having tried/know most things about a lot of ethnic cuisines. Despite having lived in Chicago for eight years, I'd never had a mangonada before. Once I saw a picture of the good stuff at La Michoacana, I knew that I needed it in my life. I hardly ever get to this part of Nolensville. I chalked it up to being a section of Davidson County that didn't have a name. Considering the rapid rate of growth in the city and the need to put people *somewhere*, I thought that was a fair assessment. Well, while this area may not be part of the city proper, it does have a name: Glencliff. I think I knew this. I should have known this. I like knowing things like this. Geography lesson over. Let's get to the goodies. As I was mentioning before I digressed, this part of the metro holds many ethnic eateries that reference styles from all over North and Central America. I don't know how many mangonadas you'll find in The Gulch but around here... ? Yeah. The good stuff awaits. First off, there's plenty of parking. La Michoacana is part of a giant strip mall with store fronts a'plenty. I wonder how long this area will stay ethnic. Will it stay a viable neighborhood for people of a certain background or will it become gentrified by transplants eager to have an affordable place to live that's closer to the city. Time will tell. So many thoughts on my way to eat ice cream! Okay, digression. Back to it. Once you park (take your pick), walk inside to find a bright, colorful, clean, and airy establishment with all sort of sweet, frozen and cold treats to pick from. I almost fell prey to some fresh fruit paletas (come on! You can see big chunks of kiwi in the pop! Next time...) but I was on a mission. I would have a mangonada or else. The nice fellow behind the counter asked what he could get me... and I pointed to a picture. Yes, I should have felt shame. No, I didn't. He laughed and asked what base I wanted (you can pick from a variety of fruit). I asked which was the best. He replied, 'mango' and I went for it. He took his time and made me a beautiful concoction fit for eating and drinking. The mangonada is a cross between a shake and a sundae made with fruit (mango; duh), ice cream, lime, lime juice, chile, and chamoy sauce. It's a visually intriguing concoction. Oh, I also had a tamarind 'straw.' The taste is interesting as well. It's a combo of salty, sweet, sour, and hot. I've never had anything like it. The chamoy sauce is an acquired taste and although it looks pretty, you might want to ask for it to be used sparingly before diving in for gobs of it. As the weather gets warmer, drive down Nolensville and get a taste of something new. La Michoacana offers further proof of Nashville's cultural and culinary diversity. You just have to travel for it. Not everything will come to you. Extend some effort and be rewarded handsomely. read more

This place is AMAZING! Coming from LA, I've missed the small Mexican fruit stands that you can find throughout the city. Popsicles, ice cream, yogurt drinks, cut fruit - everything looked amazing. We had a fruit/yogurt parfait that was incredible, and the sorbet with chile sauce. Selection is giant and, and prices aren't cheap, but definitely reasonable. Was in the area for Thai food and to cool the burn I decided I wanted( okay needed) some ice cream and was directed here. The server was friendly and probably would have let me try every flavor but I decided on coconut and man was I glad! Most coconut ice creams don't have much coconut in them but this did and was a generous size for a single cone. I will definitely be back to try the pistachio( no the Nutella!) I came here on a Sunday around 2 pm think I was going to be full of people. It was empty. I ordered a mangonada,pistachio ice cream, and a vaso de elote. The man that took our order was nice. The taste though .... I was not the best to be honest it taste like leftovers to be honest. The ice cream tasted like when you leave ice in your fridge without a lid on it it just tasted not good. The elote was not good ether it tasted like if they put some lime in the corn and was dry. I don't know if it was that today was not their day. The tables were also dirty it wasn't anything to bad. I LOVE THIS PLACE!! I had my first chamoyada and elote in Atlanta with my cousins. Now I knew there was a place like this in TN but I didn't know where. First I found another place and they were good too but I still felt like the one I had at Atlanta was better. Then my friend found this place for me. We went and since then, I've been hooked! Hah I love the mangonadas, the fresh drinks, and the ELOTES are my favorite and just as good as the one in ATL. The Chamoyada however is good but I prefer the one I had in ATL. I seem to notice that it is made differently in ATL than Nashville because the Chamoyada was made the same as another place I went here in Nashville. But I prefer this place over the other well known one here in Nashville! Even though is not getting the rave like the other store, I personally don't mind it being hidden because I just love this place (I know, I'm selfish) lol. The store itself is at a small shopping lot. It's so hidden because Planet Fitness & Goodwill (I think, some thrift store) takes up the spotlight so the people seem to not really bother to look at the smaller stores in the corners. read more

What a total gem! After a long Sunday of being at the dog park and checking out a festival at Centennial Park, I was craving some chamoyada, which is a delicious combination of mango sorbet with a tangy/spicy sauce and tamarind candy. Found this place on Yelp and off we went! It was a long trek for dessert but oh so worth it. It's located towards the end of a large shopping complex with the Planet Fitness. This place is amazing! Now, the ambiance is definitely lacking with a few barren plastic tables and chairs but just direct your attention towards the HUGE selection of homemade ice cream (even tequila-flavored!), popsicles, fruit drinks, and my beloved chamoyada just to name a few. They also served nachos, sandwiches and made interesting concoctions with cheetos and doritos. We came on a weekend afternoon and there was a long line but they had multiple workers taking orders so we waited probably 10-15 minutes max. The language barrier was easily overcame with my 1st grade level Spanish and pointing/hand gestures. My boyfriend got the Ferro Rocher ice cream in a cone that was absolutely DELICIOUS. I normally don't like a lot of ice creams if they are too sweet but this one had the perfect amount of sweetness without making you sick of it. I, of course, get a chamoyada that definitely hit the spot. I did wish they included more fresh mango slices though, will probably request it next time. And there was also a frequent buyer for chamoyada and fruit slushes where you buy 5 and get 1 free. Sold! Price was great for two massive desserts. And the homemade delicious-looking las paletas (popsicles) were only $2 per pop! Paletas have always been my favorite form of a cold treat, 'cause it's always so light, refreshing & perfect for a hot summer day. The best part of La Michoacana? THE FACT THAT THERE ARE SO MANY FLAVORS TO TRY!! It was like being in a candy store for ice cream lovers!! I wanted to try EVERYTHING but I was in a chocolate-y mood, so I grabbed a Snickers flavored one. Soooooo good. It was creamy but refreshing with a huge Snickers bar frozen in the middle! The employee that helped my friend and me out was so nice too! She was so patient with us in explaining what flavor was what. I wish there were signs or labels to differentiate the different types of ice cream & paletas, but I suppose with that many, that'd be pretty difficult. Delicioso! Every time that I come to La Michoacana Golden there is always a line out the door. It's that popular. It's definitely refreshing coming here after having having Jenni's ice cream serval times. If you like your ice cream with a little spice I'd recommend getting a Mangonada. A Mangonada is basically an ice cream/sorbet with chamoy sauce (a thick spice red paste made from chilies/limes/mango juice). They also top your mangonada with a chili powder as well which contrasts the sweet flavor of the ice cream. I highly recommend it. Also the horchata (look it up if you ain't about that life) here is on point, as well as all the paletas (popsicles). My friend ordered a tamarindo fresca and it didn't taste too good in my opinion. I could've sworn a read a review that referred to their storefront as "tiny." Perhaps I'm mistaken, because it's definitely not. It's bright and colorful and airy and huge! Enough space for families with kids to enjoy their treats in one corner and me in another and us not bother each other. The employees were smiley and helpful and all seemed to be bilingual (which I'm fine if they aren't, but my Spanish is broken at best and involves a lot of pointing).
