Great market to pick up Mexican pantry items, tortillas, salsas, candy, rice, conchas and produce. What I like the best is the meat counter where you can buy carnitas marinated and ready to grill at home for authentic tacos. But it's the customer service that really stands out. On my way to a pig roast, I went to Angel's Bajery downtown, who always has trays of the molasses pig cookies. Not this day! So I did a search for Mexican Markets which led me to La Michoacana, a bright yellow building further up in a neighborhood. I found bags of mixed pastries up on the top area, but no bags of just pig cookies. The bags were only $10 each, but I couldn't justify buying 6 bags just to get a few of the desired cookies. The young lady working that day said, "give me a minute." Then she came back with a bag of the cookies, after taking all the bags apart and rearranging the packages so that I could buy a half dozen cookies. What? Now that's service. So of course while I was there, I loaded up on pantry items, tortillas, bought the carnitas and some fresh tamales, plus the cookies. Her helpfulness resulted in me making a much larger purchase than intended. When I brought the tray to the party, everyone thought it was a genius idea - so cute, pig cookies at a pig roast - and after I told the story, everyone asked for the name and address so they could support this business. It's the real deal. This store is like stepping across the boarder into a Mexican grocery store. Speaking Spanish is always a plus. Unfortunately, I only now a few Spanish words like uno, dos, tres and adios. It's kinda crowded in the store. Shelves filled with traditional and non-traditional Mexican foods and non perishable items. If your looking for a unique Mexican item or spice, they probably have it. Coolers all along the walls filled with wine, beer, juice and water. Walk up the stairs and there's another section that includes a meat department, a Mexican bakery, some coolers with eggs and milk and a little area to buy some veggies. The Bakery department is where I go. They make fresh Mexican sweet breads, bolillos and more. Very good! Service is always friendly. Not always a fast check-out however, since there is only one person behind the counter. read more

Not a huge place but there's a good supply of Mexican ingredients. We also liked that they sold chai flavor Humm kombucha - a flavor not available in most places for some reason, even in Central Oregon. (It's made in Bend). They also have a gas station next door with a little restaurant attached, unfortunately the restaurant was closed on the Sunday we were there, as it is on Tuesdays. Outstanding salsa - the real deal- the kind that's cooked - not pico de gallo like they serve in Mexican restaurants with chips. A little spicy but that's the way I like it. Green or red -they sell it by the pints at the deli counter. Best salsa in The Dalles. Sometimes they have fresh guacamole which is also very good.
