Rosauer's is the most upscale supermarket in Hood River. I love their selection of products. The price tags are slightly on the higher side for certain items, but are more or less comparable with Safeway, overall. Their bakery, deli, and pastries are slightly better than the competition, and their natural/health food section is much more modern/comprehensive. From the bakery, I recently had one of their "Persian" donuts, which was basically a frosted cinnamon roll, and it was really good. This afternoon, I ordered a custom sandwich from their deli, and it was amazing. While this wasn't the very best grocery store sandwich I've ever had in my life, it was probably one of the top five. I ordered Black Forest Ham and Swiss on Sourdough with chipotle ranch (instead of mayo) and all the veggies except jalapenos. The customer service was phenomenal. I thought it was kind of weird to stand there and order my sandwich verbally while the clerk took notes like a waitress (management, if you're reading this, please consider putting out sandwich order forms for customers to fill out, like a normal deli), but she did such a great job. She was really sweet, too. When I opened up my sandwich wrapper, I saw a whole rainbow of vegetables, which was exactly what I wanted. I should have taken a picture-- it was a very Instagrammable sandwich-- but I was so hungry and exhausted (it's been a rough few days), I just devoured it like a ravenous feral beast. Everything was as fresh and delicious as could be, and the sandwich was so big I could barely finish it. Definitely top tier for a grocery store deli. I've also stopped by several times now for a few small items at a time, and have had all great experiences. I think I may have encountered some expired chocolate my first trip here, but that turned out to be a fluke, and hasn't happened again since. A decade since my first review, and 8 years of shopping here regularly... I give the staff a lot of kudos for being friendly, helpful, recognizing customers, etc. The "Huckleberrys" section has a decent selection of organic or specialty items. You definitely have to watch prices very carefully in a number of ways. The regular price at Rosauers will often be substantially higher than Safeway, particularly if Safeway has a special. For instance, Califia non-dairy milks are often $4.49 at Safeway, and today were $7.49 at Rosauers. Sale prices at Rosauers can make things more competitive. BUT... you HAVE to watch the prices as you're scanning or ringing up on your own. I now take a photo of the shelf tags on anything with a sale price. Otherwise, I'd say between 30% & 50% of the time, the price in their system hasn't been updated to reflect their shelf tag price. Even losing $1 or $2 a week on the failure to match system price with a discount price adds up. The bad part of even taking the photo is that if you didn't notice but then checked as you were ready to leave means you have to go wait in the customer service line, show your receipt, phone photos, and item, get it written up, and then get your $ back. So take the photos, watch as it's scanned, and call someone over as soon as you see the wrong price appearing. If you shop there once a week and save $2/week by catching their tagging mistakes, that's over $100 saved a year. It holds true in produce as well. ALSO ... watch carefully for which shelf tag refers to what item. They don't always get them correct, so you may see a tag that says $5.99 for an item, but it's referring to the item ABOVE your item (which is $8.99 instead). Large and full service grocery store with an entire area, called Huckleberry's Market, offering natural and organic produce, dairy, meat, seafood, pantry items and pre-packaged foods. Plus vitamins, lotions, shampoos and other personal products. A Spokane grocery store that started in the 1940s, they now serve the PNW with most of their 20 stores in Washington, Idaho and Montana with one store in Oregon, in Hood River. If I didn't read the name out front I would think I was in QFC, an offshoot of Fred Meyers but a little more upscale. They may be located in a small town, but the store is quite large and has all the norms - a large organic produce area, on-site bakery, hot deli counter, diary, snacks, pantry items, and cleaning products. Love that they have a large bulk area for grains, nuts, ruce and seasonings. And of course the Huckleberry Market. They cater to locals and tourists so they do have products and prices that span all levels. That being said, the overall prices seemed a bit higher than Safeway and Fred Meyer; this was particularly noticeable on the jarred pasta sauces that had prices in the $7.99 and up range. Typically I shop at the Safeway downtown Hood River but when I'm out this way and need something, I will stop in Rosauer's but I wouldn't make a specific trip. Was truly hoping it would be more on the level of New Seasons but definitely more like Safeway. read more

Deli hot case: Lasagna and stuffed cabbage were excellent. I would return just for those. Bakery: I took off one star because the pies have nondairy whipped topping. That is a pet peeve of mine. Bakery items looked good, but had mile long ingredient lists full of chemicals. Produce: I found some bargains: onions and apricots. They have Columbia Gorge juices, which are very good. We've only got two stores in town so I'm giving this one a thumbs up. They have a pretty solid selection and most things are reasonably priced, but not all. On the other hand, they seem to care a lot about their employees for a grocery store and seem beholden to their customer service. They're also just just clean and not horribly lit. Bathrooms are actually stocked and someone seems to have cleaned them. Definitely would recommend even if it's a few dollars more. read more

The new Baker gets less then one star. The recipe of the donuts, that they are known for, has changed. Today they were out of donut holes, cinnamon rolls and chocolate muffins. The bake refused to box more up for resale. Said maybe tomorrow would get around to it but if really wanted could pre order. What?!? This is like Dairy Queen running out of ice cream. Totally ridiculous. This used to be the go-to place for the best donuts in town. Not anymore! Utterly disappointed! read more

I also appreciate the attempt to carry local products and stock a nice health food section. So this is just a regular run of the mill grocery store but tucked into one corner of the store is the Huckleberry's Health Food store which, while smallish, is a great thing to have in a small town like Hood River. And the Huckleberry's bulk section, (which is easy to miss because it has it's own aisle near the wine), is awesome. It is large, well stocked, reasonably priced and has the largest section of bulk spices that I have seen in a long time. And the spices are priced really low. The organic produce is acceptable but nothing special and is in the same area as the regular produce although mostly segregated on its own. This isn't Whole Foods or Trader Joe's but it is the largest health food store in town :) read more

I've known Rosauer's (we call it Rosie's) all over the NW including Sand Point Idaho, Spokane and now, Hood River. It's been a while, it's upscaled well and I was happy to see it hadn't devolved into a poor Safeway imitation. The staff was super helpful, they had everything I needed including fresh Salmon, great vegieis, fresh pesto and even an old Oregon friend, GC Commuter Cuvee Pinot Noir at a reasonable price. I thought this place would be like an Adronico's or Whole Foods from the name. But looks can be deceiving. This store lacked the basic necessities. And what they did have was extremely overpriced. .79 for a lemon??? Because we already had several items in our cart, I didn't feel like giving up and heading over to Safeway. In the end, we had to do 2 grocery store stops because Rosauer's left us needing about 8 additional things. Got to Safeway and well, we found everything we needed. Today, I went in with my family, and while we stopped for around a minute looking at the cheesecakes and other desserts, one of the bakers whistled and shoo'd us to keep moving, according to my father. Went and bought a cake for my granddaughter's birthday. When we went and picked it up they had put Happy Birthday in Spanish we did not ask for Spanish. They corrected it but it still looked like hell all they did was cover it up with white frosting. We also ordered whipped cream frosting and we didn't get that so we will never go back. read more

As a nomadic travelller, I find Hood River's Rosauer's to be beyond wondrefull First off, the bakery is stellar. no, I'm sorry, it's beyond stellar. They have all these incredible, wonderful pasties, right? Then, to top it off, the prices are way\\ below Safeway or anything else. THEN, the fucking cashiers are....... you're not going to believe this... not just nice, but WONDERFUL. As someone who is treated as a thief at most stores (because of the way I look), this is beyond satisfactory. I know I look like a thief, but if I ever get rich, I'm hella donating to this store. I really love this store. I love the Huckleberry's corner, I love the produce selection and wide range of organic veggies... I hate to say, I also love the bakery. Their cakes are just... yum. And their candied coconut maple bar is my one weakness. This store appears to have just about everything I am looking for... except the dark chocolate Special K shakes... but if I asked... they'd order them. Best place for organic and natural foods in the Columbia Gorge. Rosauer's is a regional supermarket chain based in Spokane, so right away there's a win, you're not giving your money to some global corporation. But in the Columbia Gorge it's also THE best place to shop for organic/natural food--they just added a huge section of bulk items as well as expanding their selection of everything else, both edibles and household products. If you can't find something just ask, sometimes their organic products are stored in with the regular stuff. And it's also a regular grocery store carrying all the usual groceries and household items. Plus the staff is always very friendly and helpful. read more

My favorite grocery store in Hood River. I try to avoid Safeway and Walmart and support my local businesses. While the prices are a bit higher, I think the selection is much better than its competitors'. Rosauers recently added a gigantic organic/health foods section, and now has a whole aisle dedicated to bulk herbs, spices, pasta, etc. If i'm looking for any kind of ethnic or specialty item, I figure only Rosauers will have it in town. Although my profile says I'm from Los Angeles, I am a Gorge Native, and have lived here most of my life. I would love to give this store 5 stars, but unfortunately the customer service and the attitude won't allow. The checkers are un-friendly and rude, especially considering the fact that I shop there three or four times a week. No one calls me by name, they baggers and the checkers are constantly having conversations about their personal life (while I'm standing there), and there is rarely a thank you! Sure, I could go to Safeway, where they DO acknowledge you, but I prefer to shop in a market with a health food section. I will say, the deli, bakery, and meat department employees are very polite AND FRIENDLY!! Unfortunately, the people that take your money need a lesson in common courtesy. Please get it together Rosauers, lest I have to drive to PDX where they seem to appreciate the business. read more

Excellent store with exceptional customer service. The employees are always very helpful finding items or making special orders with follow-up to let you know the status. Checkout lines are never too long with enough stands open to handle the current load. The doofus who dinged them in an earlier review because they weren't like a Whole Foods isn't playing with a full deck.
