Amazing pastries like croissants, tarts, macaroons, sticky pecan rolls and lovely assortment of fresh bread. I have not found another bakery I like better. Tartine in SF, Dominique Ansel in NYC, Bouchon...la mie has ya beat! They also have the best french toast anywhere. Best of Des Moines...I am voting right now! Well, uh when I can. Whether I am picking up their pastries on Saturday at the downtown farmers market, grabbing a sandwich to go, or coming in for a little brunch...this place belongs and is one of my favorite in the state of Iowa! This review is based solely on the pastries; I have yet to try other items on the menu. Croissants: I have tried the chocolate, almond, and ham & cheese flavors, and they are all delicious! These croissants are large, flakey, perfectly buttery, and light. In my opinion, the ham & cheese tastes better when you warm it up in the microwave. Pecan roll: I tried a fresh one that was still warm, and like the croissant, it is light and fluffy. The generous amount of pecans added a nice crunch, and the glaze did not make the roll overly sweet. It is also quite a large roll--bigger than a baseball. It was also surprisingly filling. Macaroons: The raspberry macaroon was the perfect balance of sweet, tart, and crunchy. The jam-like filling was absolutely delicious. The coffee macaroon was not as good. The filling seems to be more liquidy, and it just paled in comparison to the raspberry macaroon. The lines can be long at times, but it moved quite quickly. Other than that, I have 2 complaints about this place: 1.) No labels on the pastries. This is annoying for me, as I would like to know what is in each pastry before deciding to purchase it. I would ask an employee, but they are usually all busy the few times I have visited. 2.) No prices on the pastries. This is also annoying, since I like to calculate roughly how much I would expect to pay at the register before paying. Maybe this is because the pastries table constantly rotates with different pastries, so there isn't a designated place for each pastry type. However, a large photo menu with a photo, price, and description of each pastry could be located near the pastries table to clear up confusions. Also, my friend ordered a macchiato expecting it to be a coffee drink, and it was 80% foam, with a small amount of coffee at the bottom. When she asked, the employees said this is what it is supposed to be like. Just a warning, if you are expecting a coffee drink, don't order the macchiato here. Overall, I greatly enjoy the pastries here, and I will definitely be back. I just hope the pastries could be more clearly identified and priced. read more

This is been a favorite of mine for lunch for a long time. They have wonderful baked goods and my favorite sandwich is grilled Brie. I came in on a Friday about 10 minutes after 1 after their Rush Hour and ordered a grilled Brie. They brought it to me it was not even warm and the cheese was rubbery. Obviously it was made some time ago. Someone delivered it to me and didn't even notice the sandwich was not fresh. I had to flag down somebody and I politely pointed it out and she said will re Grill it for you and I explained wanted a new one. It finally came and I know if the owner had been here you would have come and apologized but that didn't happen. It's just good business when a restaurant makes a mistake and they don't take any responsibility for it and they don't care about the customer experience. read more

Delicious food and beautiful location/inside! I had bacon and eggs and toast and it was simple but delicious; cooked and seasoned well. The table full of pastries made my mouth water so beware if you have a sweet tooth, you'll probably get sucked in to buying a pastry... or five. The space has a pretty good amount of seating for being fairly small and service was friendly and expedient. Can take a while to order if you go during a major breakfast or lunch rush but that just goes to show how popular the joint is! I absolutely love this place. Nobody cooks egg dishes better than La Mie. Their vegetable scramble is amazing...eggs are nicely done, vegetables are never overcooked and they put avocado on top to make it even better! They also have the best pastries in town. La Mie deserves five stars no doubt! I used to go there a lot when I lived in the Des Moines area. I am in town for business and stopped in my favorite breakfast/lunch place...just as good as it was when I lived here! I had the applewood bacon omelet, side of potatoes, and orange juice...kept it "healthy" by avoiding the hundreds of delicious looking pastries staring me down as I waited in line. The fresh squeezed OJ was great, as was the omelet. It is clear they use fresh ingredients and care goes into each dish. It is a little pricy for what you're getting, but well worth it! As a native southern Californian, I come from a place where there are gourmet donut shops, $12 extravagant muffins and the newest dessert craze on every block. And yet...i wouldn't hesitate to put La mie's pastries on par with any of those back home. The chocolate crossaint, monkey bread, cheese danish - simply decadent. Consistently awesome. The food here is always very good and despite always being slammed the staff is friendly and efficient. One of my favorites is the dish with toast, avocado, sprouts and egg. For my personal business, I love coming here to grab a dozen or two of their pastries to drop of at other businesses or other networking events. One word to describe La Mie is BLISS. I've never had anything here that wasn't top rate. Two of my favorite pastries here are the savory croissants, which are the perfect buttery pastry filled with a ham and cheese. The caramel pecan rolls are divine and stacked high with nuts. We often stop in just for a loaf of their amazing bread. You can also find them at the downtown Farmer's Market during warm weather. My wife is enamored with the chocolate croissants. We sometimes pick up a selection of macaroons or other dessert for a party. You can even grab a creamy crème brûlée. Whether you have time to dine in and eat from the menu or you're in a rush and need crazy delicious pastries to go, this is the place. I only wish they were open later. Be aware that during prime breakfast hours they do tend to fill up and getting a seat isn't easy. I rarely have to downgrade a review, but after the past year's observation, La Mie is losing ground. The food remains good*, but the customer experience has evaporated significantly, and not like a sweetened condensed milk. Orders lost, orders brought to table long delayed and cold, meals brought to table 15-17 minutes apart from each other, table management issues, etc. Not to mention the more difficult to handle crowd control. None of this is insurmountable (aside from the crowd control). This is very much La Mie being a vicitim of its success. I hope that over the coming year they will be able to overcome some of the hurdles of that success. * The perfectly Parisian croissants have become too buttery. Excellent COVID precautions. Pastries and bread I picked up were delicious. My cold brew coffee was awful, so I would skip coffee here. Maybe the person serving me just didn't know what they were doing? But serving cold brew should be easy. It was so bitter, more so than a normal iced coffee should be, let alone cold brew. Whenever I visit Des Moines, I look forward to eating at La Mie. I went today and was shocked. It's not the same restaurant. Every single request I made was ignored. Egg white omelette, light on spinach. There was more spinach than egg. The toast was not whole grain and it was cold, and barely toasted. I ordered berries. I got grapes and pineapple. My first time here for breakfast and before I even got to ordering I got screamed at by a worker. (Brown hair, young and pony tail. Unfortunately they don't wear name tags.) My mother is disabled and can't stand for a long period. She sat down while I waited in line. The worker started to yell at me that she couldn't sit there that it was the rules of la Mei. Apparently she also came up to my mom and asked "Well what's wrong with you?" How is that even relevant let alone ok? She told me she could sit at the bar, she can't sit on bar seats they are too high and also they were blocked by the very long line. She told me that "I didn't need to get an attitude with her" when I'm informed her she was disabled. She was in the dine in cash register, so I asked the carry out person to check me out. I told them she was very rude and I didn't want to deal with her. She screamed at me, even though she had a customer, that "I was very rude to her so she was going to be very rude to me." She continued to make snide remarks while I was trying to order with the other cashier. She brought me to tears. She was more interested in trying to get into a fight with me then helping her customer. If the employees treat the disabled and customers this way the community needs to be warned. Also They have too narrow walk ways There's no way you could fit a wheelchair or a walker in the back. Other workers where also rude. Running into people and not apologizing or even looking up. They are more interested in running paying customers out immediately. The food was sub par and cold. The yolk in my sunny side up egg was broken and the toast was not toasted. The bacon was greasy and not crisp. The potatoes were ok tasty but not hot. This place does not want your business. Stay far away. read more

A bit overrated. I know there's not much competition in Des Moines, but come on...definitely not a 5-star type of place. Went for lunch - it was a madhouse, with nowhere to sit, though a couple people were taking up entire tables with their laptops and had clearly been there for hours....but I digress. Cashier was not paying attention at all. Messed up our order twice and had to charge my card three times. Sandwiches were dry and devoid of any flavor or seasonings. They had clearly been made in the morning and sat out all day until lunchtime. Same goes for the pastries. Whoever thought it was a great idea to keep them out, uncovered, in the middle of the restaurant where hundreds of people are walking and standing around...well, that was a terrible idea. Pastries were passable. Fine by Des Moines standards, but way overpriced for the quality of them. Overall it was a very unimpressive trip. This review is mainly for La Mie's macaroons. I am a bit obsessed with macaroons right now so when I was in Des Moines I decided to run in and grab a box of La Mie's macaroons. "Unimpressed" is probably the best word to describe them. It's all about the flavor in the middle of the macaroon and I found a few of them had this weird thick cupcake-frosting-like filling. Nothing 'light and airy' about thick frosting. I got a sample box of all their most popular kinds and nothing really jumped out at me which was disappointing. I know French macaroons are really difficult to make but I would hope that a cafe boasting to be French would have better. I just couldn't stop wishing that I was biting into the macaroons from Patisserie 46 in Minneapolis. read more

My wife thinks their bear claw is better than Dutch letters (which I think is the best pastry ever). Some pastries look like they sat out too long and will be dry. But most pastries go quickly anyway. Their egg dishes are delicious and have a plenty of food. Their sandwiches are cheap and tasty. Went here today for brunch. We got a grilled brie that was pretty delicious and 2 dry, unremarkable pastries from their display. They looked really lovely but probably would have been better fresh and warm. I loved all their salad, sandwich, and deli options. Their macaroons were good, great buttercream! Their iced matcha latte was nothing special. The interior was kind of dirty, many of the tables needed to be wiped and the seats were torn up in multiple booths. They had jazz music playing distractingly loud. Overall, it was a cute place but needs a few improvements to hit that 5 star rating. read more

I did love this place originally because of the variety of food/pastries (and their coffee is great) but their pastries are either over or under cooked. Also, they advertise that they have free Wifi, but they don't. I sometimes think these non corporate cafes/restaurants intentionally push us to corporate starbucks which is a shame. Why not just think of another system where you pay per hour for wifi?! Or some clever system so i can hang out and eat more/drink more in a cool spot with better food than i find at Starbucks?!? read more

Best macarons in Des Moines, hands down! Incredible freshness and flavor. And I am a macaron connoisseur. Not to be confused with macaroons. I will say though, that the owner, is less than friendly but I'm not surprised. And sad to say, for such a diverse area, the environment is mind numbingly pretentious. They've got a great assortment of grab and go sandwiches. And the chicken salad is served on a buttery flaky croissant and is TO DIE FOR!
