We just stopped by (3/25/25 10:30am), on our way from Omaha to Iowa Falls! Easy to get on and off the interstate and gas station next door to fill up, a perfect stop for anyone that wants breakfast or lunch as they serve both all day. I got the Brooklyn (bialy, cucumber dill, turkey, spinach, tomato, onion, pesto drizzle) and my husband the Sausage, Egg & Cheese on a garlic bagel. $20 with a tip. Best bagels in Des Moines! I love coming here when I'm in town. It's always busy but the wait time goes pretty fast. Good selection of bagels and cream cheese (both sweet and savory options) and a great menu overall. If you come later in the day on the weekend, you won't have as good of a chance of getting the exact bagel you want so plan ahead. What a great experience!! It was my first time eating at 5 Borough and I've heard amazing things. Was excited to try it out and ordered a breakfast sandwhich. If I had tried it inside, I would've taken a bagel to go with me for tomorrow breakfast as well! Delicious! And so many options on both bagels and cream cheeses. if the line out the door was any indication, Central Iowans are loving the new 5 Borough Bagels - Urbandale. Also, I love that the owners are NYC transplants who now make their home in Des Moines. Everything is made from scratch, including the wide variety of tasty schmears. Even better? If you're in a hurry, they can hook you up with a bagel and coffee in no time flat. I swear this is the best of the bagel shops in the area. The bagels are fresh and a bit doughy, the bagel sandwiches are absolutely delectable - and that comes from me trying several of them. And the ambiance at this particular location makes it great for being a calm brunch spot or place to stop and get some work done. I've been back several times and will continue to be a regular patron. I think it's great that they've even started expanding their drink menu and that they decorate for the holidays. Love this place. I've gone a few times for lunch & get the manhattan. It's SO good & flavorful & I don't change anything about it. This was my first time going for breakfast & it did not disappoint. Bagel is soft but also hard if you know what I mean. Again so flavorful, I love the scallion cream cheese! I got a basic BEC on everything bagel & I would definitely go get it again. Always good customer service, not terribly priced. Pleanty of seating for yourself or with your friends. Coffee & soda options, as well as a fun ube lemonade I saw on the menu! I was in here Tuesday morning for breakfast. Ian J was my server. I ordered a sesame bagel with cream cheese and 2 other bagels without anything for the next 2 mornings. I also got coffee. It didn't take lomg to get everything. It was bagged. I put sugar in my coffee and left to find my friend's car. I went maybe 5 feet and everything in the bag falling out from the bottom. The bag apparently fell apart. I gathered the wrapped bagels and went back inside to ask for a new bag. Ian apologized and proceedesd to give md a new bag. This one stayed stayed together. read more

Very impressed with this cute spot in Des Moines! Excited to see this light and bright new bagel shop. I had the Manhattan Sandwich which was very good. This location is busy around the lunch hour. Finding a table was not a problem but they were out of some bagels. The staff was friendly and worked quickly to get orders out. I can't wait to try this spot out for breakfast sometime! read more

I was in the Urbandale location this morning and there was only one female red-headed worker. She was handling the amount of customers very well and was very kind to my husband and I. Another worker came in after we had been there for at least an hour and she seemed to get very aggressive towards the girl who had been there originally due to a woman who came in saying she had been waiting 45 minutes for her online order. There were a steady flow of at least 10 customers the whole time we were in there and for what looked like to be management talking to employees like that is very distasteful. I continued listening and it sounded like the manager had left her there for quite some time and the red-head had told her as soon as she got there about this online order. We love 5 Borough, but that girl should really be talked to about how she treats her staff! read more

This new 5 borough location is not what the old location used to me! I used to go to the university location every single weekend but the new one is closer to home, so Ive given it two chances and today will be my last. Both times I've ordered a bacon egg and cheese on everything bagels, the bacon is literally still raw! The latte is 90% milk with no exp flavor. read more

I enjoyed 5 borough bagels, though I have some mixed feelings. I was given a really stale bagel the first time I came in, even though it was in the morning, and baked goods are often freshest then. The second time the bagel was much fresher, and the overall experience positive. It felt heavy on the eggs and not super flavorful, but the scallion cream cheese was delicious and helped balance out the flavor. The coffee from here unfortunately has been really bad each time I've tried it (got drip coffee twice, tried their sample specialty coffee once, and an iced oat latte another time). An absolute star here is the orange juice!! It's freshly squeezed, refreshing, and absolutely delicious. If you go here, definitely grab a cup of it! I asked for 2 dozen sliced bagels. I needed 2 separate bags, plain bagels and assorted split equally. I was surprised how non-quickly staff worked. I'm stopping by your shop on my way to work, think "she's in a bit if a hurry" They only cut 1/2 the bagels, and did not split them evenly in the bags. I was not happy and asked for the bagels to be cut. Well I guess that annoyed the speedy worker. I expected some sort of, "oh I'm sorry, I'll fix it" I got a "well that's what they told me to do" He finished putting the bagels in the bags, throwing them in with his "customer's get on my nerves" attitude, making sure I knew he was not happy with me. I'm no prima donna, and I worked for tips in the service industry for decades, nothing about your store was service oriented. A smile and a quick step is what your bagels shop needs. read more

I was just in the new Urbandale location the other day & it is such a bright, beautiful spot with the same great bagels I love! My personal favorite is the Lox, but my kids LOVE the blueberry bagels & blueberry cream cheese. :-) read more

I've always been a fan of 5 Borough since the beginning. I'm so happy they opened the Urbandale location because it is closer to my work. Urbandale location still has the same great service, and carry the same great sandwiches. They've also added a couple new flavors of cream cheese which are excellent. What can I say that hasn't already been said about 5 Borough Bagels? I love everything they have on their menu! My all-time favorites are the pastrami sandwich (which is smoked in-house YUM), their delicious lattes, and their abundant selection of housemade cream cheeses. The various cream cheeses and bagels allow customers to create multiple, new, and yummy combinations of cream cheese x bagel sandwiches. I also love how they rotate their lattes and come up with unique names and flavor combos so there's always something new to try. The aesthetics of the new location is great too!
