Best bagels in Des Moines! I love coming here when I'm in town. It's always busy but the wait time goes pretty fast. Good selection of bagels and cream cheese (both sweet and savory options) and a great menu overall. If you come later in the day on the weekend, you won't have as good of a chance of getting the exact bagel you want so plan ahead. While I haven't dined in in awhile, there is a good amount of seating options. PS - I'm missing the mocha chip cream cheese

If you just want a small bite of something to hold you over until dinner then try the super fresh Bagels at 5 Borough. The Pastrami Bagel on a toasted bagel is simply delicious. The ingredients are fresh and the cream cheese adds an extra punch of flavor all served by a friendly staff who will make sure your bagel meets your expectations. The small dining space adds a blend of neighborhood comfort that allows you to savor the peaceful vibe of the neighborhood.

What a great experience!! It was my first time eating at 5 Borough and I've heard amazing things. Was excited to try it out and ordered a breakfast sandwhich. If I had tried it inside, I would've taken a bagel to go with me for tomorrow breakfast as well! Delicious! And so many options on both bagels and cream cheeses. There were lots of folks inside enjoying coffee and the light music playing. 100% will be visiting again the next time I am out this way!!

if the line out the door was any indication, Central Iowans are loving the new 5 Borough Bagels - Urbandale. Also, I love that the owners are NYC transplants who now make their home in Des Moines. Everything is made from scratch, including the wide variety of tasty schmears. Even better? If you're in a hurry, they can hook you up with a bagel and coffee in no time flat. It has a fun, decidedly east coast-meets-midwest feel. So, yes, you need to go and carbo-load accordingly. Their breakfast sammiches are a thing of wonder.

The bagels/sandwiches were excellent! Similar to ones I've tried in NYC. Service times were very slow- took me over 20 minutes to get my 2 items. The line for the register went through the seating area, making it very crowded for those in line and those at tables.

Love this place. I've gone a few times for lunch & get the manhattan. It's SO good & flavorful & I don't change anything about it. This was my first time going for breakfast & it did not disappoint. Bagel is soft but also hard if you know what I mean. Again so flavorful, I love the scallion cream cheese! I got a basic BEC on everything bagel & I would definitely go get it again. Always good customer service, not terribly priced. Pleanty of seating for yourself or with your friends. Coffee & soda options, as well as a fun ube lemonade I saw on the menu! Not sure if that's temporary or not. Stop in!

Very impressed with this cute spot in Des Moines! Excited to see this light and bright new bagel shop. I had the Manhattan Sandwich which was very good. This location is busy around the lunch hour. Finding a table was not a problem but they were out of some bagels. The staff was friendly and worked quickly to get orders out. I can't wait to try this spot out for breakfast sometime!

In my last visit in Iowa I had breakfast at the new location in Urbandale. My bagel with veggie cream cheese was fantastic. The freshly squeezed orange was great too.10/10.

This new 5 borough location is not what the old location used to me! I used to go to the university location every single weekend but the new one is closer to home, so Ive given it two chances and today will be my last. Both times I've ordered a bacon egg and cheese on everything bagels, the bacon is literally still raw! The latte is 90% milk with no exp flavor.

There's carpet throughout the dining area, which unfortunately makes the whole place feel a little dingy and dated. One of the coolest things about the restaurant is actually outside. It's located near what used to be a farm, and there's a chicken coop along with a nice herb and vegetable garden that you can walk through. It was a fun and unexpected thing to explore while waiting for our food, especially with a kid. The food itself was very hit or miss, and nothing really wowed our group. I ordered the sirloin medium rare, but it came out closer to medium, and I didn't think the quality of the steak was particularly good for the price. The presentation was also a little odd, with the steak served on a very well-used tin-style plate that had definitely seen better days. Other dishes were mixed as well. The onion strings were a hit, and one person really enjoyed the Reuben. The corn was excellent, and most of us liked the coleslaw and rolls. There was also pieces of spice cake or pumpkin bread tucked underneath the rolls, which was an unusual but surprisingly nice addition. On the other hand, the liver was dry, the prime rib was fattier than expected with quite a bit that wasn't really edible, and the mashed potatoes were very dry and bland. They also bring several family-style sides to the table whether you order them or not, including things like cottage cheese. It felt a little strange and somewhat wasteful since we didn't want or touch some of it, and overall it creates a LOT of food on the table. The meal wasn't particularly inexpensive either. Before tip, we spent about $70 for two adults and a child, which felt pretty steep considering the overall quality of the food. I will give them credit for the country store area. These types of restaurant gift shops can sometimes be filled with a lot of random junk, but this one actually had some interesting Iowa and farm-themed items that were fun to browse. Service was perfectly good, but overall this was more of an interesting one-time experience for us than somewhere I'd be eager to return to. We were invited here rather than choosing it ourselves, and I'm glad we tried it, but there are too many better dining options in the Des Moines area for me to be clamoring to come back.

We saw there were a few table so we decided to try it with the intention to be quick. Boy am I glad we did! Started with the sunrise juice, a carrot juice blend and the homemade strawberry lemonade both were so fresh and delicious. We tried the brown sugar and cinnamon pop tart and that was heaven in my mouth. So much flavor and goodness. I ordered the limoncello French toast and it is a slice of fresh baked lemon bread made into French toast. The flavors were rich and the texture was fluffy. A must try while it's in season. Others got the turkey and avocado Benedict and the pancakes with eggs and bacon. All cooked to perfection. Our server Jess was so nice and we did tip her well for being so last minute, but to our credit we were out of there at 6 mins after closing while everyone was still working to close up. Service is usually stellar and the location is fairly convenient with lots of parking (in the back too!) My only complaint is that my friend I go to the restaurant with who is in a wheelchair due to mobility issues has to park in back and roll all the way around the building. Its fine on a nice day, but sucks if its extra warm or super cold. I know this isnt the fault of the restaurant, but the building owners . The ambiqnce is fine, if its busy it get a little louder than I'd like. Maybe some strategically placed sound dampening tiles? Best of all...I saw that they now have a daily Happy ("Flocktail") Hour everyday before they close - and it is a 50% Off special - so now I can add them to HappyHourDesMoines.com also!! Today, my wife ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and a Bloody Mary (see pictures) - and with all of the new items on the menu, our friend ordered the Smoked Corn Beef Hash (see picture) and I went with the Healthy Hatch Tacos (see picture). Located in a…read morestrip mall at the corner of Grand and EP True (by the HyVee), the decor is nothing special but it was light and bright inside. We were greeted and asked if we were dining in (it appears they do a brisk takeout business) and were told to sit where we wanted. It was surprisingly crowded for a Sunday afternoon at 4 pm. The menu is extensive and hubby and I both like Mediterranean food. I chose the Falafel plate, served with five falafel balls, hummus, a pita, and Greek salad. The portion was generous (ended up taking two falafel home). Served with tahini and their house green sauce (olive oil, cilantro, and jalapeño) It wasn't spicy but it was so delicious - I could get addicted to this thinking of all the other ways so could enjoy it!! The Greek salad was served with house dressing - garlic and yogurt, also very good. The falafel was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, and flavorful. The hummus was not at all grainy - smooth but just a tad bland. Hubby had the lamb skewers and liked them very much. Served with rice, salad, and hummus. He also took one of the skewers home. We both had the mango Fresca juice. A bit too sweet for me but I generally drink unsweetened beverages. Hubby liked it a lot. Service was friendly and we were checked on twice to ask how we liked our food. Generous portions, friendly service, good food, but not inexpensive (with tip, $55 for two) but what is inexpensive these days??
