We are locals and have been eating at La Patrona for several years. It's located in River bend at the intersection of Carrolton and St. Charles. 'Love the small and very colorful, mom and pop feel of the place. We avoid chain restaurants like the plague and really like supporting small, unique places like this. They make hands down the best traditional margaritas we have found anywhere here in town. Not fancy, but always very delicious, made with fresh lime juice -- not some syrupy over sweet mix -- flavorful tequila and served in a plastic cup with ice, filled absolutely to the brim every time. At happy hour, which is 3 to 6 pm, they are just $4. We usually get the authentic South American tacos served with corn tortillas, choice of meat, diced onions and cilantro, with the most delicious home made salsa verde (spicy green sauce). The carnitas (pork) is my fav. Usually five for just $11 or $12. A lovely place for tacos and tasty margaritas. Who would think Mexican food in New Orleans would be so good?! Typically I get Cajun or Creole food when in Louisiana, but randomly decided to go with friends out to a nearby Mexican spot. This place is great for traditional tacos. The food was tasty and good quality but not superior. Their best tacos is the carnitas taco, the asada and the lengua. The chicken, al pastor and shrimp were mid. They are basic and traditional as a normal food truck tacos. The only 3 things I did not like and it could be improved, the guac is a little intense maybe by the size of the onions or the amounts and it would be nice if they added a spicy version of the guac with more spicy jalapeños. For hot sauces, I asked for spicy and got a green sauce that was mild, maybe some chile de árbol, a habanero sauce or an avocado crema will add kudo points. Then lastly the tortillas even though they feel home made I feel like they are a little thick which causes me to feel overstuffed if you eat more than 3 tacos. You feel heavy and does not feel light. The service was great and super fast. It's a cute little open kitchen that you can see them in the back cooking. I appreciate this place and we come pretty often. I hope they keep thriving. This place is not fancy, it feels exactly what the name is La Patrona (the lady boss) or the head of the house that cooks. It feels like grandmas home. read more

This is a Mexican joint that opened up next to Bangkok Thai and Cooter Brown's. I've never seen this joint get really crowded but they seem to have a consistent stream of people eating here. They do offer more of a mom and pop run joint vibe here than other Mexican style joints in the area. I've only ended up eating here a couple of times as honestly Mexican food is not at the top of my cuisine choices so I typically choose Bangkok Thai or Cooter Brown's food (when I get a choice). Now Cooter Brown's food just ain't anywhere as good as it used to be (with their poboys really disappointing me these days) so I'm far less encouraged to go to Cooter's except for oysters and late night food but they don't even serve that late anymore sadly. So if you need a Mexican fix this one will do the job about as well as the many other Mexican style food choices you have in this immediate area and the rest of Orleans, Jefferson and the rest of Louisiana's Parishes. read more

Extremely well priced and delicious Mexican food. I've eaten here twice, once as takeout and once in person. Both times I had the poblano enchiladas because they were just that good! Typically, I'm not a person who likes beans, but their beans in particular are so tasty and I want to finish them every time I have them! In person, a casual ambiance provides a great scenery for a casual dinner out or a celebration of a birthday (which I did with friends). Strong drinks, in particular the cadillac margarita was very well balanced. Edwin, our server, was so fun and we had a lovely time there. Would definitely go back and highly recommend. read more

Amazing Hispanic food. Finally the first Hispanic food place that is delicious and amazing to go to. This will be my go to spot for all hispanic food for as long as i am in New Orleans. There's a very lovely spot to sit at outside and people watch; my girlfriend and I loved it. It's right next to a large oyster bar as well so one can go grab a drink from there later. - The restaurant was clean but empty and so I sort of wish more people would go here to support the place. The owners are very nice and get all the food out rapidly. I want to keep it a secret but this place deserves a lot more business. Go here! read more

Love this place! The staff is always super friendly and it seems to be a family owned place. This is the MOST authentic Mexican I have had in New Orleans, and that is coming from a San Diego native where we are spoiled with great Mexican food. The food is great quality and you can tell it is home cooked. Super affordable and no Mexican restaurant in the area beats their taco Tuesday deals. The beef taco was incredibly tender, probably the most tender asada taco I'd ever had and I've had a lot of asada tacos. The man working the counter was super sweet and came up to us multiple times while we were eating to check on us. The taco Tuesday specials were good but the asada taco wasn't on that menu and that is a must. The queso was the perfect white cheesy queso with insane flavor. This place has good reviews and does have potential. The good: tortillas are homemade, the shrimp I had earlier this week were spectacular. The steak they use is good quality. This is where things went bad...I came today for my second time. I ordered the shrimp I had a few days before. This time they weren't even seasoned. I was the only table in the place and could not get any service. I commented to the owner about the shrimp and he looked at me like I insulted him and didn't present any resolutions. I asked for seasoning and they wouldn't provide it. Steak wasn't seasoned either. Al pastor tacos were inedible. Enchiladas were also mid at best. Yes!! Finally some good TX-Mex ish food. I'm from Dallas and since moving to NOLA I've been on a hunt for some good enchiladas and this finally fed my craving. Don't get me wrong, there is good real Mexican food around, but not Tex-Mex. This place is a mom and pop shop - delicious! The Margaritas are hand made the Jalapeño was so very fresh tasting. California burrito was great, chips are freshly made and salsa has nice heat to it and isn't overly watery. Suizas enchilada is yummy! Queso had a nice kick. There's one large window in the sitting area, so you get to people watch and enjoy your meal lol. We were serviced very quickly. I ordered the chicken fajitas, which were about $15. It comes with rice, beans, guac, salsa and tortillas. I loved everything on the plate! The chicken, onions and peppers were PIPING hot when they sat the sizzling skillet down. I had to give it about 5-10 minutes to cool, so I started with the beans and rice. The rice was perfect. It's soft and hot. The beans were soooo flavorful! Forever a La Patrona stan. Their small but mighty restaurant and team gets sh*t done and continuously puts out amazing food. While everything on the menu sounds great, we stick to our same order every time. Don't sleep on the Smoked Cheese, a must-get if you're dining at the restaurant. It comes in a sizzling hot skillet with homemade tortilla chips and is the best thing ever. The green chicken enchiladas are always piping hot out of the oven and have plenty of flavor. Enchiladas come with rice and beans. The Nachos Mix are layered with plenty of meat (shrimp, chicken, AND steak), plus sour cream, guac, and jalapenos. We get the refried beans on the side so it doesn't make the chips soggy. And it's all super affordable too. OMG this is my Taco Tuesday go to from now on! They have fresh, homemade ttortillas and the varety of taco is more than nay other taco tuesday in the city. I had tongue - you heard me -TONGUE tacos, they were so tender and good! The chicken and the steak were my next favorites. The margarita, the Cadillac margarita, was STRONG. I only needed the one. The tacos are not only incredible and authentic, but it is a great deal at 5 tacos for $10 on Tuesdays. There are so many more things I want to try on the menu. I thought the service was great too. THE FOOD: A lot of the menu looks good, and they do have Taco Tuesday everyday, 5 for $10. I got 2 lengua tacos and Tampiqueño, which is 2 cheese enchiladas, flank steak, rice and charro beans. The lengua tacos were good, and had some kind of thin gravy on them. First time I had gravy on lengua tacos. But it tasted good. Cilantro and onion. They had a very tasty salsa (green) that had a little heat and good flavor. The charro beans were good and had good flavor also. The cheese enchiladas were a "miss" for me. Kind of bland, tasteless. The skirt steak was really good. Had a nice char on it, seasoned well and very tender. The rice is not typical spanish rice. It's really good though. read more

I admit, I was hesitant to try this place just because my expectations for Mexican food are very high and I haven't found anything good in the 2 years I've been living here. But my friend worked next door and always orders the Camarones a la Diabla. I decided to try it. AMAZING! The chile sauce is deceptively spicy-it creeps up on you and makes you feel all warm and fuzzy. The shrimp were perfectly cooked. Asada wasn't my favorite, but portions of all the meats were pretty fantastic considering tacos are $2.50 each ($2.30 each if you order 5). They also do great rice and beans, which it feels like is so rare at mexican places in the U.S.. The beans have a great depth of flavor and are slightly smokey, and the rice is light and fluffy, but also buttery and smooth. We ordered 2 hard tacos and received soft tacos for my 6 year old daughter which she will not eat and he proceeded to argue and say we did not order hard tacos when all three of us heard my husband say hard tacos.
