This should be a good pop in your mouth. It was just mush. Also had two chicken tortilla soups delivered. The avocado and all the toppings were tossed in it already (with the exception of the tortilla strips---but those were burned). Should be on the side so you can put it fresh when you get it home as to not change the texture. And to call it chicken is wild. When in New Orleans on my trip for my graduation from LSU, Johnny Sánchez was a must stop. If you don't already know walking in, Johnny Sánchez was founded by Aáron Sánchez of whom most know from MasterChef. I'm on a mission to eat at restaurants founded by all the judges and this was my second after Gordon Ramsey's Fish & Chips in NYC. There was so much on the menu that I wanted to order (here's looking at you - short rib birria), but I figure that I can always come back on a return trip and stuck to more traditional Mexican fare. My friends and I shared an order of the chips, salsa, and guacamole of which all three were heavenly. Don't even get me started on those fried plantain chips. I could munch on those for days. For my main course, I ordered a carne asada plate and had to have a Mexican Coke to accompany it all. There was no room for dessert, as much as I know it would have been delicious. I loved the decor and the big mural on the wall, too. Our server was wonderful and patient with us (maybe more with me due to my excitement). Fantastic service and excellent food! Staff were super friendly and quick - especially considering that we came here after a saints home game. We shared an order of chips and guacamole. I was finally able to try Johnny Sanchez after having it on my list of restaurants to try. They did not disappoint! The restaurant was nice, open and really clean. I loved the mural that's on the wall. I was with my coworkers and it was about 10 of us. We were sat promptly and the server brought us water. He took our orders pretty quickly. We had the queso, chips & salsa with guacamole and brussel sprouts for our appetizers. The queso was really good with a nice kick. We were looking forward to trying Aaron Sanchez restaurant in New Orleans especially being fans. We came into the restaurant a bit shocked seeing there were no customers on a Friday night except for one lady at the bar. The staff paid no attention to us when we walked in and the lady kept wiping down plates and ignored us for a good 3-5min. Finally someone yelled out and her that there are customers and she finally seated us. It took her a bit of time to come take our order too even tho we were ready and tried to flag the waitress down a few times. We ordered albondigas (meatball) tacos and some chicken tortilla soup on the side. The chicken tortilla soup was flavorful and hearty. The meatballs were had good flavor too and was topped with a few pickled radishes that paired well with the meatballs. The food was actually not bad and was well balanced. The interiors were okay and not too fancy with a more casual atmosphere. However the vibes were really bizarre and very off. The staff didn't seem to want to be there and didn't seem to care. It definitely made the dinner feel uncomfortable and awkward. We probably won't be back here again and don't really recommend this place. I've been here twice and both times it's been amazing! The servers have been very friendly, especially when I came with a big group last time! Our waiter was very attentive. I tried the chips and queso, which was very good. I'm not a big queso fan but this was delicious! I love how the chips are served with plantain chips too, they're so good! We also ordered the chips and salsa and queso - all fantastic and seasoned appropriately - not too spicy! The chips and fried plantains were fresh and also had a nice kick to them. Stopped here before a concert with my girls. The staff were super welcoming and friendly. The decor was cute and well lit but still gave a cozy feeling. For food we ordered street tacos i had two barbacoa and two verde chicken but for meats you can choose between verde chicken al pastor (pork) and barbacoa (beef). I am currently on a fast for Lent where I can't eat fried food, bread, or really any carbs so my options were very limited as I could only do the chicken tortilla soup or the salad. The first soup they brought out was luke warm at best so I had to send it back. My favorites include the burger, cauliflower tacos and albondigas tacos. The service however, has never been great. I have gone in the past for special occasions , office lunches and birthday celebrations with coworkers and evening dinners for board meetings and have spent money on standard menu items and drinks so it was not my first time there. I went today along with two coworkers for their 11th anniversary celebration special (unlimited tacos for $11.11). It was a good idea in theory but our experience was far from anything worth celebrating. The hostess sat us as soon as we got in so there was no wait (11:30am). She gave is menus and gave us a minute to look it over. The restaurant was maybe 25% full. Not busy at all! We thought we were in for an enjoyable lunch. When she came back to take our order and we said we wanted to do the anniversary special, it all went down hill. She was snarky and dismissive and when we asked her questions about the items on the special, she seemed completely irritated that we were there and all her responses were almost condescending. She also complained about the large groups of people that have come on for said special and how she cannot wait for the special to be over. When my coworker asked how many tacos he can order at a time, she rolled her eyes and said it "depends on how busy they are". Excuse me, what? Is it unlimited tacos that are going to be served one at a time? Two at a time? Was there some fine print we missed? I was really confused by her response. When we finally got our tacos, they were just ok. The beef barbacoa was my favorite. The al pastor and chicken were just ok. The salsas that came with the tacos did not have much flavor or spice so I asked for hot sauce and she again rolled her eyes, huffed and puffed and turned around to get it. I was really disappointed in this bad attitude and treatment of customers who were there to show support for their 11th anniversary. Here's the thing, if you're gonna be pricier and consider yourself upscale Mexican than say Felipe's or Juan's or even barracuda... I think some basics have to be in play. Al pastor is made authentically at all the other joints mentioned, but here the pork was cubed and definitely tossed with the sauce to mimic as if it were cooked like Al pastor. Details like that make it hard to rate this place higher than their competitors who are far less expensive. Service was great , happy hour Margaritas are good. Their tortillas are definitely homemade or tasted so at least. I just struggled with freshness in some of the ingredients like the Albondigos. Very flavorful but didn't have that fresh taste. I used to think that the decor was chaotic, but now I get it. It's medieval whimsy. I love the Día de los Muertos mural. Service from all the staff we encountered was top notch from the host, to our waiter, to waiters who weren't assigned to us, to the friendly man from back of house who ran our food. Our server. T with the locs, was attentive and understanding when my date didn't enjoy his cocktail. The al pastor ribs with fried corn was presented with a smoke filled glass cloche. They didn't taste like al pastor and were cooler than room temperature, but I found the flavor interesting- in a good way. The positive connotations I have to them was probably because they were so tender. The fried chicken sandwich is no longer there, but I ordered the adobo fries that used to accompany them. The fries seasoning changed a ton from the days of the chicken sandwich (late quarantine). They are very cumin forward. I didn't love that, but they made up for it by coming with an automatic-no questions asked tin cup of ketchup. The most patriotic thing about me is that I believe that French fries and ketchup are an American staple and if I wanted a mouth full of mayonnaise, I'd go to Belgium. If it wasn't for this being Aaron Sanchez restaurant we would've never came & I to wish we didn't. For starters in New Orleans the low temperature was like 86 while the high was over 100. On this particular day it was muggy & humid outside. When we got to the restaurant it was hot as hell! THEY DIDN'T HAVE AC!!!!! Once we sat down, I mentioned it being so hot & the waitress actually said "it's been broke for awhile". How?!?!?!?????? It's 100 degrees & humid outside, how is it that the AC has been broke for days!!!!! That is completely UNACCEPTABLE!!!!! I can give you 24-48 hours broken, but for awhile?!?!?! If this were any other day I would've left! Now to the food...(it literally just kept getting worse) smh. So for my appetizer I had the guac & chips which was fine. For my entree I had the chicken quesadilla & didn't not like it at all. I believe they put cheese on top & which is why it looked how it did, however we eat with our eyes first & it wasn't aesthetically pleasing. It looked like a omelet. I also had the street corn which was good. For my drink I had the Cruising Punch (which the sever forgot to put in for me smh) & it was ok. The rest of my party thought the food was ok, but nothing to rave about. I had to use the restroom & going to the restroom looks like a scene from a scary movie. It's a long hall & to the left it's the entrance to the bathroom with the restaurant next door. Never in my life had I seen nonsense like that. The women's restroom as well only had 2-3 stalls, so having two restaurants share it is ridiculous. Once you walk down the long hallway, there's a door & when you go through there is a women's & men's bathroom. It's just very dark & cold getting to that bathroom. This restaurant also has a thing where they only accept 4 credit cards max with a party. I've never heard of that before in my life & I don't see the purpose of that. I would respect it more if they said one card or don't have the "rule" at all. With each bill as well they charge gratuity, which I think is slick. There were only 5 people our bill was covering (because we asked for a separate check due to the size of party & with the 4 card rule it's just too much) but we were charged gratuity as well as the other people using a card. I was extremely disappointed! I would NEVER come here again & I wouldn't suggest it to anyone else either. It's ironic the rating for this is as high as it is. I just can't believe Aaron is a millionaire & you have your AC in your restaurant in 100 degree weather city not working for awhile. That is just insane to me. For some people they just care about a profit & nothing else & Aaron didn't seem like that kind of person, but I just don't know how he could be ok with that. Have you ever tried eating & had to fan yourself at the same time? That's not a fun time. I just can't believe this experience I had. During a conference lunch break I "stumbled" across this place and so happy I did. They sat us immediately and placed in front of us quite possibly the best complementary chips/plantains and salsa Iv ever had. The salsa was fire and had a Smokey flavor and dare I say with a, "creole" twist. It was a thick salsa with a good burn that left you wanting more. The server was training but they were both super kind and suggested the popular items and were spot on. I went with the shrimp burrito. The presentation alone was a piece of art and I had to admire before digging in. I was impressed with the hidden jalapeños inside they added which gave the right kind of heat that I usually substitute hot sauce or salsa to add flavor. This burrito had it all with no extra dressings. The shrimp once again had a Smokey creole flavor that was a cool twist to the Mexican food. It's very modern inside yet comfy. I came as part of my 7,000 mile 30 city food tour. Went to chef Ramsay's fish and chips and needed to creat my own personal pressure test amongst judges, lol. Bartender way super friendly for starters... Happened to arrive at happy hour and was excited to see a few a La carte items which was perfect for trying a few things. Chipotle adobo wings with chimichurri ranch. Had a really nice balance of flavors in the sauce...cook on the wing just solid. Plantain/tortilla chips and salsa basket was solid as well. While I found the carnitas taco quality but semi-forgettable in the pork's cook, I actually left with my favorite bite being the tempura cauliflower taco. Texture, acid, colorful presentation, etc all delicious. Happy to have tried this place! read more
