I have been living in Madrid for 4 months now, and while I'm a broke college kid, I would say I get my fair share of tapas throughout the city. This has been the best tapas I have had in Spain! I've dabbled in Barcelona, Tarragona, Valencia, Zaragoza and even Toledo but baby La Perejila blew them all out of the water. We stumbled upon this gem on our first night in Madrid. It was a Monday and we arrived right when they opened at 20:15. The place filled up and came alive immediately. The house vermouth was well recommended. All of the tapas was great- specifically the house special meatballs, the mussels, and the beef cheeks. The service was quick and friendly. Cheesecake for dessert was very good and we got little glasses of orange wine complimentary at the end. All in all, a wonderful experience. Date of Visit: (11/2/2019) La Perejila is a small tapas restaurant located on Cava Baja. We arrived on a Saturday a little after 1. We didn't have to wait for a table when we arrived but over the course of our visit more and more people crowded the restaurant and bar area. It's clearly a popular spot. The tables are small and close together. At one point we had people standing over and around us but we had finished our meal by that point so it wasn't bothersome. It's definitely something to keep in mind though if you're looking for a place that's quieter/more intimate. Service was slow but I think the server was tending the bar and waiting tables. It took a while for our food to come out and it took a while for us to get our check (30+ minutes) but overall I enjoyed the food. We each got a meat empanada as an appetizer which was really good. For my main course I got the sliced toast tapa with smoked cod, Spanish paprika, and fresh tomatoes. It was generously sized, the cod was fresh, and the bread was nicely toasted. If you're in the area and looking for a place to eat, I'd give them a try but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. read more

Our first night in Madrid was absolutely made special by visiting La Perejila. The ambiance is lovely, and the baccalao was *amazing*. (Everything was excellent, including the chorizo, beer, and sangria, but I was absolutely blown away by the baccalao.) Waited over 30 minutes to get a table and made presense to the waiter. Finally, when the table was cleared and ready and after the long wait I was in about to rest myself and order some food, the waiter screamed and waved NO! The table is reserved to someone who is at the bar. Probably someone who was way behind in line but decided to wait at the bar. Overall, this was a very rude jesture and during the 30 minutes wait no effort from the restaurant was made to engage with us in any way. I love this place! I've been here twice on both trips to Madrid and always get the meatballs. The decor inside is so warming and eclectic to me. The seating is pretty tight though so.probably not the best for groups over 4. They also opened for dinner a lot later than I remembered so I ended up waiting a little. But all of that aside I really love coming to this place of rioja and tapas. read more

Best tapas I had in Madrid? I was only there for 2 days but this little joint has me thinking yes. Minus one star because I saw them pouring their sangria into a giant glass container from a BOX people. It tasted 'fine', but come on, does it hurt to make fresh sangria? I don't think so. Upon arrival, we were served an 'aperetif' cocktail; it was good, but strong. After that, every drink we ordered we were given a tapa. My favorite menu-item we ordered was the pickled anchovies with red pepper with tomato sauce on toast. The mussels and meatballs were also good; but the anchovy toast took the cake. I would definitely recommend La Perejila, and the street it is on has tons of different spots to try afterwards. read more

It's hard to call anything in Madrid a hole-in-the-wall considering nearly ever restaurant is literally just that. But the name isn't just a literal meaning, it has that deeper meaning of something that people walk by often without looking and then one day fall into it, discovering something they wished that had years before. I have eaten here twice now, and the second time was complete luck because I completely forgot what it was after the first time(it was my first night in Madrid and I was completely lost). I recognized it from the playful, Mexican-ish decor. I also knew I had to eat there again after the first time. You can sit at the bar in this tiny joint and get some canitas and tapas along with it or you can sit down and order something hearty. I have done both and am happy with both. The first is the cheap option, the second is the delicious option. They have wonderfully original tapas as well as some classics, all are amazing. One thing that caught my eye were their "rebanadas," or tostas. We got one with melted cheese, grapes, and almonds and it was fantastic. I will be going back to try some more. While the place is small and usually busy(it's on Cava Baja...) it is definitely worth a visit. The staff is so nice and the food is some of the best I've had here. read more

Our waitress was great, not only explaining some of the things on the menu to us but also giving us tips on what else was going on in the neighborhood that night and also what drinks to try at the street fair that night. We had perejillas (beef meatballs) which were so-so. Kind of stinky if you ask me. I went for the stews but they had run out. I'm guessing it's good enough to have run out so quickly. The service was fantastic. It is too crowded and I like a little breathing room, no I get this is the norm here. I have to stress on the service being great. We had an english speaking waitress who went out of her way to accept a card payment and have our food in a to-go container since we had a baby with us and couldn't sit down to eat here. read more

La Perejila is a unique restaurant. The decorations are over-the-top and kitchy, but in a sort of comfortable homey way. It's like grandma's house. The space is a little tight, but there's plenty of seating. The food is very good. The house specialty meatballs are excellent and come in a unique sauce that is great soaked up by bread. Speaking of bread, the tapa dish with anchovies over toast is also very good. The restaurant also has an extensive wine list and good vermouth (Spanish style of course). The food is a bit pricey for the serving size but I am still giving 5 stars because I believe the quality is up to par with charging a little extra. This still isn't an expensive place to eat and I'd highly recommend it! read more

Went for tapas at 9pm on a Thursday - it was quite busy but we snagged two bar stools and ate at the bar. Later, they moved us over to a table. Awesome price for a ton of food!! We literally got more free food than what we paid for. We ordered some tinto del verano (like sangria but simpler: Fanta and red wine) and a ration of albóndigas (about 10 meatballs). Before the meatballs arrived, we were served the following free apps: cheese in olive oil, crackers, olives, and bread. Meatballs were yummy! After our "meal" of free food and meatballs (that was, I have to say, pretty darn filling), they gave us two little shot glasses of orange wine and some chocolate covered peanuts. Service was great! It's a little cramped like many bar restaurants, but we will definitely be back again. read more
