We had a great meal upstairs in the restaurant. We were delighted to find Very fresh seseafood away from the coast. Each delicacy from the sea was lightly seasoned so the flavors inherent in each could truly shine. Best calamari steak I have ever had anywhere and razor clams were a delight. Very classy Tapas Bar with a restaurant upstairs. The hostess was very accommodating and explained everything in English. We went for a light lunch of tapas. 2 euros each and they give you a plate to choose anything you want. Omg everything is so delicious. I had my four tapas with a class of Tempranillo Yum! If you like fresh oysters, they have them. This tapas is Basque cuisine. I'm coming back for dinner tonight. I'll probably post more here after that lol. read more

Excellent Vasque cuisine with personal attention from the owner. Really good "Tinto de Verano".

Came here twice during a 7 day period. First time for dinner in the upstairs dining area which was amazing. Waiter was very knowledgeable about the dishes and great wine pairings. The wine she suggested was perfect. Also had to oysters that night which were very good as week. Came back again around 11:30pm and enjoyed a bottle of cava and some more oysters. Loved this place enough to have it be where I rang in my birthday. Come here for dinner or just drinking and you won't leave disappointment. Loved the waitress upstairs, unfortunately I cannot remember her name but I'd like to thank her for amazing service both times we were there. read more

We stumbled upon this place when we were in Madrid when the restaurant we intended to go to was not able to take our party of 6. We were so glad to find this place! My sister and I (the only ones who speak Spanish) ordered a bunch of tapas and a few entrees for the table to share and were very impressed with the flavor of each dish. How do I feel about Orio? Not impressed at all. The pintxos were foul and the service mixed; some good, some bad. We spoke multiple times to one rude waiter with a truly bad attitude, who was working behind the bar, and theoretically should have been explaining what the pinxtos were, and making customers happy... and we also briefly talked to one very sweet waitress who apologized for her colleague's attitude. Yes -- another employee recognized that he was being an asshole! Although I do appreciate the ability to throw your toothpicks on the floor and not pay for (cold, unappetizing) pintxos... I'd much prefer that the food be delicious, in which case I would happily pay for it. Luckily, I didn't have to, and since I will not be returning, I never will! read more

First time trying Basque cuisine and it was great! We ordered many appetizers and shared, We started by Tuna Tartar, which was great, the we had croquetas de jamon Iberico (Iberian ham croquetas) followed by Artichoke hearts with olive oil, to die for! Each one of us had Ostras, and man! they were really good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lemon and some hot sauce made it for me. All this accompanied by White wine from the Basque region...simply delicious to top it off we had as dessert trufas de chocolate ( no translation needed for that one) which were right what we needed to end this amazing night. This place is known for pintxos but that's on the first floor...and I am sure we'll be back for those. read more

The concept of the place is really cool - there is a lot of different tapas (mini sandwiches) and you can keep taking them and afterall you pay based on how many toothpicks you have left (each tapa has a toothpick) and I believe they cost 2 euros each. We were looking for some tapas and came across Orio. It was pretty crowded, but we lucked out and found a spot at the bar. It took us a minute, but we flagged down the bar tender and ordered a couple glasses of wine. He then asked if we wanted plates and explained how it works. Basically you just get a plate and grab whatever looks good from the bar. Everything has a toothpick in it, so just keep those on your plate and they will tally up your total at the end. What a great concept. I had a great time walking around the bar and grabbing random small bites all night. They even have a waiter walking around with special items that they just made that are not at the bar. Everything was really good and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We later found out that this is a chain, but don't let that discourage you. read more

I love the concept of Orio. The counter bar is filled with a variety of tapas and you pick whatever you want. At the end of your meal, you pay based on how many toothpicks are left on your plate. That is what makes tapas my favorite - you get to try so many different things. Almost everything here was great - from the jamon to the cheese but my favorite was the baked clam. Sometimes the bartender will come out from behind the bar with a tray hot and fresh out of the kitchen. The wine is very good and they have a variety all well priced. The service was efficient if not particular warming but then again, this is mostly a self-serve concept except for the drinks. The space is big so even when there is a lot of people, it doesn't feel crowded - there is also an upstairs dining area. It's a fun place with an upbeat atmosphere. This is a nice place for drinks and tapas. The service is ok, but they did need a little reminder on our drink order. They had several nice tapas, the standout being the stuffed pepper. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this restaurant while looking for somewhere to have a nice anniversary lunch. We were immediately seated and our waitress was nothing short of attentive and helpful. They have us an appetizer on the house as well as helped us pick a great meal based on our tastes. I had the bacalao and my boyfriend had the red tuna and both were delicious. We also shared a plate of navajas, which I had never had before, which were also so great. Found this gem looking for a place to have good pintxos, went back a total of 4 times while visiting Madrid for 8 days . The food is fresh they keep adding cold pintxos since they disappear fast ,also hot ones from the kitchen. I can't recommend this place enough, delicious, fresh, gourmet food. Try their (Tinto the verano) like sangria but lighter wonderful on a hot Madrid night to go with the Pintxos! Definitely we would visit again while in Madrid. read more

We went for the bar/tapas thing. This is a chain, but don't let it dissuade you. There is a line of tapas (probably about 15 different ones). You serve yourself and just keep the toothpick it is speared with. That is how they total your bill. It was fun and very relaxed. It would have been nice if they labeled what the individual tapas were as one in our group really doesn't like fish and it was hard to distinguish the various offerings. So let's start with the service, the entire wait staff was extremely kind and the host actually was incredibly insightful. I've never had basque food before so I was in the dark for many of the dishes but he enlightened me on everything there. The best part was that they bring out more tapas even while your eating your main course, which was awesome because I kept on trying new things. We had an amazing dinner at this lovely restaurant on our first night in Madrid. We've eaten many Basque meals and even travelled for some time in the Basque country. This was as good as anything we had there. Super inviting staff that were great with our teenage, vegetarian daughters. Great wine, lovely food and the staff was over-the-top helpful. Orio has a great atmosphere and attracts great local people. Being American it was a bit intimidating walking in but everyone, especially the wait staff, was extremely nice and fun. It is a lively place with a contagious energy. For drinks, I recommend the gin tonic- they came over and made it in front of us. For tapas you don't "order" you just pick what you want to eat from what you see which is a fun, non0conventional way to do it. It's in a fun location with plenty of people walking around. read more
