Was feeling under the weather and wanted some soup. I wanted some of my late mother's chicken soup. I remembered that the taqueria inside the market carried a large variety of hot prepared food and soups. I ordered the Caldo de pollo (chicken soup) and was not disappointed! Rich, hot flavorful broth with large chunks of vegetables. It came with a side of rice and some house made corn tortillas. The chicken were two or three large wings. The soup was delicious! Today was my second time coming here. My father-n-law stop at the Taqueria. Thankfully he was with me too because I don't speak Spanish fluently. We ordered two bowls of menudo with a couple of Mexican cokes and agua Fresca with strawberries. The menudo was very good and tasted clean. Definitely has a good spice kick to it already but if you want more of a spice they will give you some green salsa. The meat was cooked good and it wasn't too chewy. They provide you a couple of limes with chopped onions and cilantro. Their menudo is all meat with very little hominy. They have fresh produce, pan dulce section, and the meat market is toward the back. Very tight spacing inside but you will manage to navigate your way around. La Plaza is a local Mexican oriented market south of Georgetown square. I love coming here in the morning for barbacoa and pan dulce! The line for food is always long but definitely worth the wait and prices are fair. For a pound of barbacoa, you might be paying about $20 which is about $1.25 an ounce - very fair considering you get tortillas, salsas, limes, cilantro, and diced onions. Other than that, it's a great spot for Mexican groceries including dry goods, produce, a bakery, meat/seafood market, and awesome Mexican candy! The store is always clean and I love walking in and smelling the boot leather, it reminds me of actual grocery stores in Mexico! read more

Is it star anise? I can't figure it out but it has a sweet'ish flavor and I'm not used to it in my barbacoa. I'm from south Texas and the style is different so it's not a fault to La Plaza Market it just wasn't my cup of tea. 5 out of 5 The chicharrón con carne was DELICIOUS. Freshly made and still warm.... This was the highlight of my La Plaza experience. I regret not getting more! Crunchy and meaty, accompany it with a corn tortilla and some lime, heaven. 5 out of 5 The calabazas con queso fresco tasted like a grandma just made it, which is the best compliment I can't give food made from a restaurant. It felt homemade, comforting, and I will definitely be getting this again. The tortillas are made in house, the salsas are spicy and flavorful, and the prices are a little above average but doable. I love their candy and piñata selection. This is definitely the place to go if you're making candy bags for a kids party. Also- There was a nice little seating area if you're on a quick lunch break! This place has THE BEST pan dulce, specifically the concha's/ esponjas in the austin area (in my opinion. Don't come for me). The only problem is there is never a set schedule for when the bakery puts them out. You ask 3 employees about times and they will give you 3 different answers. This includes the owner. Today we came at 3pm, and they said to come back at 5. At 5 one employee said it came out at 3, one said at 4 and it's gone, And one is saying it will be out at 5 and even though it's past 5! Forget about calling to ask. They NEVER answer the phone. I've tried for years to reach them for specific things and it's always been that way. Best Carnitas and pulled chicken tacos I've had in a very long time. The place is reminiscent of when I traveled to Mexico. Next time I'll order meat by the pound and bring it home. The green salsa is pretty spicy but oh so good. They have a really long meat counter in back, I picked up some Discada, which the guy behind the counter says is a mixture of beef, pork, bacon & sausage seasoned and has green pepper and onion mixed in. Absolutely great authentic food and variety! That goes for the panadería and carnicería sections as well. The grocery portion has lots of items that are difficult to find in our standard selection of grocery stores at what seems a slightly higher cost which is expected with the import costs. We had carnitas tacos, pastor tacos, tripas tacos, agua de piña and some assorted pan dulce all of which was fantastic! Would have been a 5 star, however ordering from the restaurant area can be intimidating as there's not a real menu board and you just have to step up and order what you want. This is made even more difficult if it's busy because everyone is just stepping up so there's not a real line. It took me a few minutes to realize that I had to just step up and say what I wanted or ask what some items were in order to get anything to eat. read more

Love this place. It has a little bit of a larger selection than a 7-11 but not so large that you have to wear hiking shoes to get a gallon of milk (looking at you Walmart). At last a very good Mexican taqueria and a decent market in Georgetown. The folks are nice too. The place is big for the location and city. Its busy and they have a wide variety of meats, poultries and pork selections and cuts to order at the meat counter. They also have great daily lunch specials where each day is something different; such as: Monday is Carnitas plate with rice beans and tortillas for $5.99 and its good. The caldo is bery good and the bowl is huge and its priced right. The barbacoa is very good too. The wife and I went amd I was super hungry and I ordered 6 tacos (fajita, xarnitas, 4 barbacoa) rice, peppers and 2 large sodas and with tax I only spent $18 andthe portions are generous. I was so hungee i didnt even have time to take a photo of the chow. The grocery store has a good selection of all groceries from dry goods, dairy, canned goods, produce and household items. It is a little more expensive than the HEB down the road but if convenience is your thing then shopping here after eating some tacos is worth it. The produce is very fresh. I've visited this store on multiple occasions and have always been pleased. From the wonderful authentic food prepared and served to the great meat counter to the vegs. On Saturday I stopped in for some chicken soup to go. By the time I got home I noticed the thin plastic lid of the container holding the soup had broken. I wasn't too alarmed. Shortly after lunch I realized that my throat seemed swollen and realized that not only had the lid broken it had broken into pieces into the soup. Please consider putting hot soup into something else or at least get some lids that are not so thin so this does not happen to others.
