The Preservation League maintains a welcome center next door to the gift shop that contains an Art Deco museum and where they sell tickets for their Art Deco walking tour. They also offer travel brochures to tourists. The gift shop is filled with charming items ranging from notecards, posters from past Art Deco weekends, T shirts, vintage jewelry, and art. There are items for every budget, from a few dollars to much more. Proceeds from the gift shop support the work of the Preservation League. Many items didn't have price tags, so my daughter had to ask about prices. After a few questions, the salesperson responded to one item by saying, "It's expensive." Not the price, not any helpful information--just a snobby, dismissive comment. My daughter was excited to shop and left feeling embarrassed and upset. It took hours for her mood to recover. No customer, especially a young shopper, should be made to feel unwelcome for simply asking the price of an item that isn't labeled. The store may have some nice merchandise, but the attitude was enough to ensure we won't be back. If you shop here, be prepared to be sized up and judged by the staff before you even make it to the register.
