Emerging from Quebec in the late 1950s, this french fries, cheese curds and brown gravy combo has become one of the quintessential dishes of Canadian cuisine. Here are some of my own personal (judgmental) thoughts on poutine and how it's supposed to be made: 1. Crispy french fries. Must be fried twice to a golden perfection. 2. Cheese curds. Must be squeaky. Cheese will melt on the outside while retaining a cool, squeaky centre. DO NOT consume a "poutine" made with shredded cheese. Blasphemy! 3. Sauce brune. The gravy is known as a "brown sauce." Should be silky and piping hot. If these three points are not met then the poutine is generally not worth my time. (Let's have some standards, people!) VUE Weekly named La Poutine as the #1 Best Poutine 2018 and #1 Best French Fries 2018 and therefore I had to check them out! (I've tried their poutine years ago. But since that time I spent 3.5 years living in Montreal, so I figured that I'm due to try them again.) The little shop in Garneau has been around for quite some time now (it opened in 2011) and is pretty undisputed as thee spot for poutine in Edmonton. One of the owners is actually from Quebec, which is certainly comforting. You need that built-in expertise! The restaurant is very small, however there is seating for about 10 people and they offer outdoor seating as well (even in the winter!). The space is simple and clean with the ordering counter as the focal point. There are some fleur-de-lis here and there which are necessary! And the menu is pretty straight forward: They've got poutine and almost nothing else! I visited on a Saturday evening and I came prepared. The menu consists of sixteen different poutine concoctions, ranging from very traditional Quebec styles to versions that are definitely suited to a Western palate. (The Perogy and the The Donair scream Edmonton to me.) I like seeing this! It means that they understand their audience. (However they don't have a poutine with hot dog in it, and that might be one of the most Quebecois ways to eat a poutine.) They also make a feature poutine that changes every once in a while and it's fun to keep an eye out for what they create next! La Poutine does claim to take the tree main ingredients very seriously, which is key. Their fries are hand-cut from locally grown russet potatoes and twice fried in canola oil. The cheese curds are brought in from Quebec for added authenticity. And there are three types of gravy to choose from; Traditional (Quebecois-style), Beef (Western-style), and they also do a gluten-free gravy. All of the poutines some in regular or large size and a couple even come in a mini size. As for the beverages at La Poutine, I have some criticisms. They offer cans of pop, which is totally fine, however they don't carry the correct kind. Everyone in Quebec knows that a poutine (or any fast food, really) is to be enjoyed with either a cherry coke or a spruce beer. Neither of these are options at La Poutine. They do have Pepsi, which is probably the next most acceptable thing to drink, but it would be so much better if they carried a few more classic choices. I was very ready to commit some food crimes and to crush a whole pile of fries, curds and gravy. First up, The Big Mack (Traditional poutine + ground beef + house mack sauce + lettuce + red onion + pickles + toasted sesame seeds - $9.50 for regular). Big Mac-themed foods are so hot right now and are a major trend. I was happy to see that La Poutine is on board! I thought that they totally pulled this off and did an excellent job of creating a Big Mac in poutine form. It tasted exactly like it. The fresh lettuce, pickles and special sauce really brings in the exact flavour and mouthfeel that you would expect. And I especially liked the nice touch of adding sesame seeds to mimic the hamburger bun - so smart! The "weirdest" poutine on the menu is likely The P.B. (Traditional poutine + bacon + maple PB&J drizzle + crushed peanuts - $9.50 for regular) although to me, it really doesn't sound weird at all. It just sounds like something that I would love to eat. We ordered it as our "wild card" item, although I was pretty sure that it was going to be great. This was the one! We all agreed that this was the best poutine of the four that we ordered! Ultra unique, the flavours in this poutine just make sense. The PB&J drizzle offered that amazing, crave-worthy, salty and sweet combo and the crushed peanuts brought a great texture. I kept forgetting that there is bacon in this, which is the absolute best protein that they could have chosen. This poutine was fun, different and delicious! It was my first time at la poutine. I've heard a lot of good things about it but never tried it for myself. The restaurant is small but workers are friendly and and knowledgeable! They recommended me to try the Big Mac poutine. I believe there was beef, shredded lettuce, gravy, pickles, some sort of spicy mayo sauce and sesame seeds! Basically a Big Mac in poutine form. It's a really small storefront with only about 10 seats so taking it to go is probably the easiest if they're busy. But poutine is always the best fresh so if you can eat in I recommend it. If you give this place any less than 5 stars I honestly don't know if I'd believe you! When planning my trip here this place quickly made my list as you have to eat poutine in Canada! This is a very small restaurant with limited seating but they do have a couple of tables outside which was nice. We were greeted by a very nice lady who took our order and promptly brought our food out within minutes. We ordered the traditional, wild mushroom, and québécois(which comes with Quebec smoked meat). I immediately dig into the traditional, and fell in love once my fork hit my tongue! The fries with the salty gravy and creamy cheese curds is a combination that can't be beat! The wild mushroom comes with a truffle cream and wild mushrooms which adds a really nice earthy flavor that tones things down a bit. The third and final poutine, the québécois was good. The only thing bad I can say is the salty meat with the salty gravy can be a bit much, but that's nothing against the restaurant. Parking is hard. We were just lucky to find one in the back. If you love the gravy you can purchase some powder to make at home. Overall good poutine. Viva la Poutine! I'm not going to make any sweeping statements about this being as good as poutine I've had in Quebec (it's not), but what their serving up at this little shop in North Garneau is pretty darn good. Hand-cut fries done brown with skin on - check! Actual cheese curds (not Mozza) that squeak on your teeth - check! Herby brown gravy thick enough to coat and not run - check! Well, you've pretty much got a darn good poutine. Aside from the traditional fries, curds and gravy, la Poutine also serves up 14 combos with different meats (beef, chicken, sausage, bacon, chili), a veggie option and an Italian meat sauce version. You can also choose between the traditional brown sauce or a beef based gravy. I've been eating the "Granny" with chicken and peas thrown on. This is also a pretty Quebecois version. Though in Quebec, it's usually shredded rotisserie chicken (another Quebec fave) and here it's just cubed white meat. Of course, the rotisserie version is more flavourful, but la Poutine's Granny passes muster. Certainly, you can't eat this every day and it's a little pricey. I've had giant plates of poutine in Montreal for $5. La Poutine charges between $7 and $10. Still it's a generous serving of pretty good food with quality ingredients. The larger serving is easily a pound or more of food. It's in the neighbourhood for me and likely to get a few more visits. My only real quibble is that the poutine is served in a tub which is great for take out, but terrible for even distribution of sauce and curds, especially at the bottom. My honest review: I decided to try this out after seeing reviews and wanting a good poutine. I was disappointed. Coming from Sherwood park it was difficult to find anywhere around to park. Had to walk about 6 blocks to get there. Asked the people outside on the 2 picninc tables how it was. They said it's ok. Not very enthusiastically. Inside was 4-5 chairs and a few small ledges to eat on. Very small inside. I asked for a poutine, and was charged $9.45. A few minutes later I got a small sized poutine which apparently is the medium size. I took the poutine and started to eat it walking back to my car. The gravy seemed hot and tasty. The fries were soggy and seemed like they were sitting around for sometime. Definitely not cooked to order. The poutine came out too fast for that. The cheese curds were not melted whatsoever and were actually fridge/freezer cold in the middle. Nothing tasted terrible but I didn't want cold/thawing cheese curds. I finished the small poutine by the time I got to my car. Not worth the $$ or the time to get there. Won't be back. read more

Yes, it alright. Very simple poutinery next to the garneau theatre. Lots of options menu wise including two kinds of gravy traditional and the thicker one. It's very small so more often than not you'll be getting poutine to go. We had the Peroghy which consisted of sour cream, caramelized onions, piece of sausage, fries, traditional gravy and cheese curds. A large set us back 11-12$ and it was shared satisfactorily by 2. As I have already tried their Traditional Poutine and their Quebecoise Poutine (both are amazing), I decided to try some of their other flavors while I'm still here in Edmonton, as I unfortunately fly back to Los Angeles on April 4. So for every day that I was still here in Edmonton, I went to La Poutine and tried a different flavor. On my second day, I tried The Hot Wing and was blown away because it actually tasted like a Buffalo hot wing, and I feel like the green onion really complemented the spice of the Buffalo chicken wing flavor and the sour cream, and the result was heaven on my tongue. The day after that, I tried the Big Mack and was surprised by how accurate the name is, as it really does taste like you're biting into a Big Mac sandwich at McDonald's... the Big Mack is great, it's just not my favorite because I'm not a fan of the taste of pickles or of McDonald's, it's just a personal preference. The day after that, I tried The Supreme and I feel like this was the best one yet, it's amazing.. The sour cream and the bacon bits and the green onion all combined to make the best poutine I've ever had, it was marvelous! You have to try The Supreme. On my last day, I tried their Feature poutine at the time, which was The Lotza Mozza, which had fried mozzarella sticks, marinara drizzle, and a little bit of parsley, and I was impressed because it was so unique and it tasted like I was biting into a pasta. All the flavors I have tried were wonderful, but my absolute favorites were the Hot Wing, The Supreme (phenomenal), and The Quebecoise. I've tried so many poutine places in Ontario and specifically Toronto, but La Poutine in Edmonton is the best poutine shop I've ever had. This place is simply delicious. La Poutine nails the essentials of poutine, while giving the creative and adventurous ample room for experimentation. The fries are hand cut, fresh, and crispy. The gravy is either the traditional québécois style (the *best*) or a western style beef gravy (to satisfy heathens or something). The cheese curds squeak, but not in the unsettling "am I eating plastic?!" way that too-fresh curds can tend to. This is as authentic as you will find in Edmonton, and could only be truer if they served the gravy on the side (and come on, let's be honest here, that's just weird - I don't care if its how it was originally done). Want to go beyond basic? Not only do they have a robust menu of deluxe offerings, but they also always have a special (which changes ...well, whenever they feel like it, I guess). I tried the special Taj Mahal - swap out the gravy, swap in a rich, spicy chana masala. Totally amazing, rich layers of flavour accented with fresh cilantro giving a real sense of fusion cuisine that you would not expect out of a hole in the wall one-dish wonder. There are a few rough edges. The place is tiny, but has outdoor seating when the weather is playing nice. There is no washroom. Drink selection is miniscule. A personal grievance of mine is that EVERY time I'm tempted to try something new I miss not having had the best traditional poutine around. The restaurant... 3 stars, the food truck...a 4! Starting off...if you're really Canadian, it's pronounced pou-tin. Not poooteen. :-) I've visited the restaurant several times, and I prefer the truck. What's tough is that in the winter... trucks aren't running. :( So first, food. yes, it's a bit pricey, but the inlaws love it, so...when they are in town from up north, we visit. they do indeed serve gluten free patrons, so I get to join in when we go. Your choice of gravy is Traditional - a lighter gravy (vegan), Gluten Free (also vegan) or Beef... I've never had the beef or traditional (obvious reasons - raise hand if you're celiac), and I've tried several different poutine combos. While they were all good, I haven't managed to get "crispy on the outside" fries at the restaurant. Food truck - amazing fries. I have had friends tell me they didn't know what happened - they get crispy ones all the time. Maybe I just have bad timing? There are two sizes to order - and they are thoughtful enough to use compostable containers made from sugar cane pulp. Which is awesome since the City of Edmonton has embarked on a mega composting project and I don't worry (as much) about extra landfill. The restaurant itself is "cozy". Yup. that's code for - you might not get a seat inside. 10 seats inside, 12 out, yes, even in winter they set up some chairs and tables on the expansive sidewalk. You might want to consider take-out, heck, the river valley isn't too far down the path and there's plenty of excellent paths, benches and grassy seating there. Parking - oh this is fun. There are spots out back, but it's a gamble. You do NOT want to park in the pay spots and risk not paying - they do come by often. Pay for the parking, IF you find it. There are some street spots, but be aware of the tow away zones during rush hour. Again... not fun. Across the street - nope. Don't. Now there IS one, (ok three) way to always get (or not need) parking: ride your bicycle or scooter!! Ding ding, meep meep. The third is take the High Level streetcar (runs Mid-May to Thanksgiving). You CAN get your poutine fix delivered by skipthedishes.com... but it's not going to be the same hot and fresh! The restaurant hours are pretty generous to get your squeak on - 10pm most nights, 8pm Sundays, closed Mondays. During Food Truck season (generally May - Oct/Thanksgiving) you can also book the truck for catering. Book early - dates this tasty could be full. Mmmmmmm. read more

This place is my go-to lunch spot and never disappoints! It is always fast and tasty but my one picky point would be that, for my tastes they cover the fries and curds in a little too much gravy. I went here for my first visit the other night. Poutine is one of those classic comfort foods that's great to have on a cold winter day. The restaurant is small, more of a take away kind of place. I was impressed to see the variety of poutines that were available. I decided to go for the Quebecois, which was a combination of tradition poutine with smoked meat on the top. But for all you purists (give me cheese curds, or give me death) there is the traditional poutine. There are two types of gravy that I was offered, traditional or beef. Apparently the traditional is the type of gravy used in Quebec, it's light and vegan - and there is a vegan poutine for those who are vegan. My poutine was $7.50 for a small, but poutine is pretty filling. The cheese was squeaky, something I've never gotten at any local restaurant serving poutine. The fries were crisp and hot, and a good thickness. The gravy was pretty good, I went with traditional. But I did find it was a bit salty. The smoked meat was good, but I wish I would have opted for the classic poutine on my first visit. The service was friendly. My order took a few minutes but that's okay because everything gets made fresh. Now onto the bad part. The poutine was good, a little salty, but good. But after I finished eating my stomach was immediately bothered. I don't want to give La Poutine a really bad rating because I'm not sure what it was. If it was something in the poutine that gave me a bad reaction, or if maybe it was just too rich of a meal to have at 8pm. Hence the three stars. Love this place!!! So far is my favorite poutine place!!!! They have so many variety that sometimes I want to order all the menu!! I had try like 5 diferent items from the menu and I like every single one, the only bad thing I see about the place is that is very small so if a big group of people wants to go is better u order to go, and the other thing to be aware is that they take only cash and debit card, so I hope in the future the change that and maybe they get a bigger place. But if u are in the area is a good place to stop and try it or even if u just like to try new places this is a good one but be aware that is hard to find parking. read more

The menu isnt large, and it doesnt need to be. What I really appreciate is the fresh cut fries and REAL FREAKIN CHEESE CURDS. I constantly have trouble deciding what kind of poutine I want because theyre all good. Not joking, I've tried everything they've had on the menu, and I intend to continue until the reaper comes for me. This isnt a super fancy place, they only have a couple small tables in a room the size of my dining room but thats no problem for me because I live in O'Strat. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this yet! La Poutine is one of my favourite places in Edmonton because of the variety available, location, freshness, and quality of service. I have come here and been accommodated throughout all dietary walks of my life including gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, and obviously a carnivore. That's a great feature in my opinion because they appeal to all markets and have the most delicious options. Nowadays I usually get the Supreme with lots of hot sauce, but I still like to have the gluten free vegan poutine sometimes for something lighter and to get more veggies in I love that they have take home gravy because it is honestly the best! And sometimes there's just no time to go all the way down from the north side to get the best poutine fix in. I always get the large because of iously I want to stuff my face with as much of this as possible while I'm in the area and I never regret it. Whether you're looking for a cheat meal, comfort food, or just something delicious for your tastebuds you've totally got to try this place. I've been curious about this place for awhile now, having passed by it so many times and seeing its "Opening Soon" sign but never quite seeing it actually open. We finally tried it today and while it tasted great at first, the rating slowly went from 4 stars to 3. If I could, I would give it a 3.5 to be fair. We made sure we were really hungry so we would have plenty of room in our stomachs for the mass induction of carbs. The first few bites tasted delicious, but halfway through I realized it was just too much for me. It was more the gravy that got to me than anything else. It's delicious, but too salty for my tastes. Trust me, you want a drink with this meal! The squeaky cheese is awesome -- I love feeling the squeaky texture between my teeth. My fiance, on the other hand, wasn't too crazy about it and said it was "like trying to eat erasers." He had the Party (beef with hot sauce and sour cream); I, not feeling adventurous enough, had the Traditional Poutine (both at about $9 each for large size). Upon sampling his, I decided it pretty much tasted like a taco on fries. Not bad. The place seems to be doing pretty well in its first few weeks open, perhaps due to novelty than anything else. As a result, there is very limited seating available. A few barstools along the counter seating lining the walls, and a couple tables outside for now. It's more of a "eat and go" kind of joint. Overall, would I pay another $9 for my poutine? Probably not. I could easily grab a footlong sub for a little less and is somewhat healthier. But I'm glad I at least tried it! read more

I've been doing a lot of field research here and I've come to the conclusion that the poutine is pretty good. I've never at my pickiest when I'm eating poutine, but this poutine is quite satisfactory. I took a picture to remind myself what it looked like and I had no remorse in the morning. I get the vegetarian version. A lot of times vegetarian gravy can be a bit thin or watered down; that's not the case here. I think it's the powdered variety; if so, it's in the upper echelons of powdered gravy (though not as good as a mushroom based vegetarian gravy I've had). I don't know if adding peas to poutine makes it any better, but it doesn't detract from it. I suppose adding some nutritional content to poutine isn't a bad idea. The best part of the poutine is the cheese. It's quite squeaky and it retains its squeakiness even when it gets a bit soggy. It should probably be a little cheaper. Get it to go because you certainly don't want to stay any longer than you have to (especially in the wee hours of the morning). read more

I love poutine. I've tried my fair share around the western side of Canada. The biggest issues I usually have are either, not enough curds, too much gravy or soggy fries.. I decided to pop into La poutine seeing all the mixed reviews and try it out for myself. I ordered the smoked meat poutine while my friend had the original. The amount of each ingredient per poutine was perfect. The right amount of curds, enough gravy for all the fries but not enough to soak them, fries were crunchy all the way to the end. The smoked meat was delicious and well portioned as well. I will definitely be back to try the other menu items. read more

Finally tried this place out - boy, it did NOT disappoint! I got the Meatlover Poutine with beef gravy, and I'm so glad I did! Everything was delicious. The fries were fresh, the cheese was wonderfully squeaky, the gravy was full of flavour, and the meat was so juicy. This poutine might rival La Belle Patette in Banff as one of the best I've had.
