Amazing food and friendly staff: "We put so much love into everything we make!" The birria quesadilla is absolutely mind-blowing.

My Husband and I are in Puerto Rico to celebrate our 40th anniversary…read more Besides Puerto Rican food we decided to try TomatePR because we love Mexican and the reviews were great. We were married in Zihuataneho Mexico, were spoiled with good Mexican food living in Chicago, and find after moving outside Nashville, we have craved better Mexican food, so we came here. Gina came to our table to make sure all was OK with wait staff, and food we were eating. Well, it was MORE than OK! Food was wonderful, made fresh, and all questions and requests were answered. She did make us feel like "old friends", and after a long incredible dinner, she offed us 2 tequila shots, and played our "special married song" for our special anniversary. We both had tears in our eyes as that was so special. She took photos for Facebook (but we do not belong) so we are hoping she texts them to my husband who gave her our number. Thank you Gina, all the people who took care of us. Please go there for an excellent meal, margaritas, and the best service. We are going to try to go back before this vacation ends. G&B

The tacos were very good not very filling. If you are super hungry, you definitely need a side or an appetizer along with them. The salsa was very flavorful and had a nice kick. My husband enjoyed his fajitas. I tasted a piece of the chicken and it wasn't really bursting with flavor but still good. About halfway through our meal live music started to play. It was a little loud, but not too loud that we couldn't hear each other talking. Cute environment waitress was really friendly. It's somewhere I would revisit and recommend.

Our 5 year old son was with us and super whiny because he was tired from traveling all day. While it was dinner time she let us order "the baby" pancakes which was so sweet. He fell asleep before the food got there. It took maybe 10-15 minutes for the food to come. My mojito was lovely as was everything we had. Couldn't eat it all so we took the leftovers back to the hotel. Definitely a casual locals place. Also incredibly accommodating and kind to us just stopping in for a meal. Also good price - it was right about $50. Would have been much more in the states. If you're at a hotel in the area, take the walk over. And after dinner, walk down a few blocks to the beach to walk off some of the food. I recommend.

When I got back, the place was packed. I waited on line and they really didn't have tables for solo diners. The first available table was a 4-seat table. They reluctantly gave it to me. I ordered pernil, arroz y gandules, maduros a side of steamed veggies and malta. The food arrived and the drink never did despite me asking my server. They were busy but the restaurant was small and there were enough servers to hold down the fort. There's definitely a management issue here. Anyway, the food was pretty good. Don't recommend the steamed veggies though. They were not fresh. I ended up getting takeout of ribs and rice & beans one night. I called ahead and it was over 20 mins before I went to pick up and still had to wait even though I ordered prepared foods that they had ready. Ribs were a tad dry but pretty good. Rice & beans were great. Also got breakfast one day. El tipico which was pretty good. Loved the mangu. The jugo de parcha (passionfruit juice) was pure sugar. Overall, pretty good food but the attitude from every single staff member is bad. Wait is long. Let's say 3.5 stars cuz food is good. Do with that info what you will.

We waved as we walked in to a waiter, pointed to a seemingly available picnic table, and he waved that we were good to go, so we sat right away, at 7:45p...after that more tables opened up. Drinks: 1. Pina colada - no bueno...like a coconut ice, not pina colada. 2. Passion fruit juice with fresh mint - delicious! 3. Cherry juice drink with alcohol - wife liked it, and I thought it was good. Appetizers: 1. Beef empanadas- I thought the crust overpowered the meat and onion, but daughter and wife loved it. 2. Nachos - terrible. Chips were stale and cheese/beans covering was bare, but then they gave us additional refried beans in a little cup, and straight I thought the refried beans were delicious. 3. Baha fish tacos - phenomenal!!! Entrees: 1 Chicken fajitas: disappointing. The spicing was off, on the chicken, and the guacamole was mostly sour cream. 2. Steak fajitas: very good and way better than the chicken Service was quick and the staff knew their stuff, but it took a long time to get the bill because other tables came in.

Made same day reservations for 2pm, didn't realize they close from 3pm-5pm which may be the reason our service was somewhat slow. We were sat immediately however we waited some time to order and receive our drinks. Our waitress returned with our drinks, house chips, and took our food order. We ordered the Birria tacos, the Carne Asada, Mini Elote-appetizer, Panela Frita-appetizer, truffle fries. Modelo, mimosa, Cenote, and Espresso Mezcalito to drink. The food took a little longer to come out than I would have expected and did not come out all at once. The consume for the Birria Tacos was a little too thick and the tacos should be served with lime to cut the flavor of the Birria. Over all flavor was good but could have been more authentic with some diced onion and lime. The "Carne Asada" was actually just a steak (flavor was great) but this is not carne asada. The "Pico" was supposed to come with plátano which left the Pico as just cherry tomatoes and few red onions. Very underwhelming. The appetizers were very good however the guava sauce did not seem to set well (not sure if it was microwaved or what), it stuck to all of our teeth. The flavor was also very mild and dull. Overall decent experience at what I understood to be a new restaurant, customer service was good, could use some fine tuning.
