It's never my idea, but I have spent many a night at this bar. This is a bar I used to go to when I was underage. Now that I'm legal to drink, it's not my first choice, but it's at least decent. The set up can be a little awkward and there's always a huge line for the bathroom, but if you can get a seat at the bar or in the window, you're golden. The bartenders are cool and the drinks are stiff. I come here when I go to Bimbos, for a daytime drinking marathon, or when friends drag me there. Ask the bartender for dice and play midnight at the bar. read more

Came here after Cobb's on a Thursday night and it wasn't crowded at all. We had about 20 people in our group so it was nice to be able to take over the bar without causing people to hate us. Came here on a Saturday and walked up on a high school fundraiser being held at the bar. As out of towners we thought it would be fun to join in and we were right. We had a perfect time, had a great time with the staff and other patrons and really enjoyed ourselves. Great true neighborhood bar where you can get smashed and the bartender can get smashed and everyone has a great night. Skip the tourist spots and meet some people that live here. read more

This is a local hangout, mainly North Beach residents. Cross-towners and young transplants need not apply. I watched every World Series game here for the shear atmosphere. I wasn't looking for a big crowded sports bar. I wanted to look at the expressions on the faces of locals who grew up loving the Giants. Although I am an Indians fan, La Rocca's made the World Series worth watching. I give this bar 5 stars because it is MY KIND OF BAR! it is filled with local city people, which I am. A few tourists come in, and if you are an open minded and politically incorrect tourist, this is the place for you. There is no place for sensitivlty training here. There is usually more men than women...in fact I am usually one of he few women that frequent this place. I know the owners, the bartenders, and the regulars so I feel at home. Pretty divey which I like, so we stopped in (5 of us) and on a sunday night we made up half of the patrons. Place was nothing special. A wee bit stinky, but I was sitting at the end of the bar closer to the restroom ... I guess I could have moved but still... Drinks were pricey ($5 for an O'Doul's punishes the DD lol). Other patrons were a bit out of order - not a big deal until the bartender couldn't handle a little noise from my buddy (who was telling/reenacting a story about a monkey - yes - monkey calls were involved - and they were rather authentic sounding). It wasnt so horrible - after all, this is a bar, not a restaurant or a library. If it annoyed you - make a joke or be polite at your place of business. Mr. Bartender, you seem like a nice enough guy but posing threats, even in jest to your paying, drinking customers because you are annoyed is not nice. Really put off by the remarks about Mexicans and middle easterners :-( that came out of nowhere. Anyway, try this place if you like- not a bad spot but not a destination either. i like this place. i like the drunk bartender. he reminds me of a guy i used to work with. i like the owner who is always nice to my girlfriend. i like the fact all the tv's are facing the bartenders so they can watch the giants or 49er's while they work. i like the music which can be loud at times. i like the fact that every time i walk in this place i end up talking to someone who can be totally insane. la roccas's is a fun local sf pub. if you want to hear old stories of north beach and how things used to be, then stop in at la roccas. it's one of the best bars in sf! i dropped a star for their really small bathroom. damn, was that made for a midget? read more

This is a fun bar to go to if there is a big event in the area (ie. Cobbs or Bimbo's). If you go on a dead night it can be quite depressing. I have been coming to this bar for a long time and love it. The bartenders are cool and the owner is out of control (in a good way). It attracts a good local crowd. Even though they say that it is where the "Tourists meet the locals" I never see any tourists, just lots of locals. I cannot go into this bar without seeing someone that I went to high school with. They have another catch phrase there - "Drink with Dignity". I prefer to lose my dignity, and this is a perfect place to do it. read more

On our honeymoon and on a sunny September afternoon after walking up to, and down from, Coit Tower my wife and I stumbled upon La Rocca's and headed in for a much needed drink. The place was mostly empty except for (i'm guessing) a handful of regulars. We grabbed a seat near the window and I moseyed up to the bar and ordered a couple of drinks. I can"t remember the bartenters name but he had a very graveley voice and was beyond friendly. He asked me my and wifes name and where we were from and what bought us in. Told him our story and he congradulated us on our marriage and got us our drinks. It is a perfect place to relax and watch the world go by. After about 3 drinks each we went to square up and the bartender told us to give him $5 and that he's giving us the drinks as a wedding gift. He WOULD NOT take more than the five no matter how hard I tried. Great place, great location and fantastic staff. It is a real great memory for both me and my wife. We were left alone to talk and it was a nice afternoon. Loses one star because of the teeny washrooms, which were'nt super dirty, but not real clean either. read more

He is also sweet, super friendly, quick & accurate w/the drinks, and not to be missed if you have a choice of the many many bars/pubs in the area. We live in the East Bay & had a whole day to walk around North Beach. We stopped in cuz he had a Warrior shirt on & it was the best place we popped into by far. We'll definitely be back. LaRocca"s! My dad first brought me to LaRocca's. He was a regular, and everyone there always told me he was "A man's Man". My dad's name is Bob Kelly, and though he passed 15 years ago, he is still remembered. In fact they have a picture of him on the wall, I expected when I visited 2 years ago that it would have been removed by now, But that is LaRocca's, a friend for life. The LaRocca's themselves are no longer there, and though my Dad is Irish, I remember him telling me that no matter what kind of threat I faced, or trouble I may ever get in, he had "friends " who could "help me out". In fact,the LaRocca's had a family band, which played at my wedding reception. Guess you could say they were kind of my extended family. My kids and I moved to Arizona, but even they take special pleasure, any time they are in the Bay Area, to stop by LaRocca's, where their Grandad is still remembered. I went to La Rocca's as the FNG & out of town comic for their open mic night last night (Tuesdays @ 10pm. A LOT of funny comics, Bryce Benson, the host & MC made me feel welcome by bashing me like the local comics. Very fun room. Even the other comics were friendly to this "carpet bagger". If you like drinking without pretension, this is the place. My brother and I stumbled across this place on the walk back to the financial district after a visit to the Buena Vista. We rolled in at 1130am on 12/29/2016. We ordered two shots and two beers. The bartender immediately took care of us and joined us for our first shot. There were only four other patrons at the bar but they immediately joined us in to the conversation and made us feel at home. Only ten minutes later, one of the patrons bought us a round of shots. Great down to earth people that made us welcome from the beginning. Make no mistake, this is not a free wifi look at me millenial watering hole. This is a no wifi, no food, drinking establishment. People go here for great conversation, great service, and to take a break in a hectic beautiful city. It makes it even better the prices are totally reasonable too. Please stop here for a cocktail and get a different look at San Francisco. I will definitely be back. This place is an institution and a great example of what San Francisco used to be and still is. read more

La Rocca's is a borderline dive bar, and we love it. Stiff drinks, good prices, friendly bartenders, local folks, never a dull moment. A great place for one or many drinks! An absurd place, but wonderful. The staff were very chatty and a tiny bit off the handle, but they were absolutely lovely. The drinks were super cheap, and they wouldn't even accept our tips. It had the atmosphere of a few old guys running a hobby pub in their retirement. read more
