We walked a long way for this one after dinner based on a recommendation from a taxi driver. As we entered we passed an Italian on his way out with a cone and four flavors piled high. He promised this was the best gelato in Rome and, sure enough, it was fantastic. So creamy and tasty! It's a nice location and stays open to midnight. Gelato in Rome is omnipresent and we've been lucky to have great gelato while here. Found this place via yelp (honestly traveling with Yelp in Italy has been such a great resource!) and walked over after dinner nearby. My fiancé and I did our typical three flavor cone. I had bacio, pistachio and stractiatella and he had chocolate (which was perfect), bacio and stractiatella. We also got liquid chocolate in the cones and he got cream on top. Ample seating inside and great service (they have flavors in English on a card you can ask for. Pay at first station then walk down to get gelato. It seems I'm always searching for ways to make myself fatter while traveling the globe, and Yelp steered me to this gelato place. I've almost never met an ice cream I didn't like, but the gelato here is truly among some of the best in Rome. Most of the flavors are true classics like lemon, hazelnut, pistachio, milk, and chocolate chip, and the flavor signs are only in Italian (but the friendly employees are always willing to help with translating). There are several vegetarian and vegan flavors that don't use any animal products. The gelato is freshly made in small quantities throughout the day (they claim not to serve it after 3 hours) so it has a soft and slightly melty texture, so be sure to eat it fast (trust me, that shouldn't be a problem)! What did we do to cap off a wonderful and satisfying lunch at Mamma Angela's Trattoria? Easy - gelati at Gelateria La Romana! We got here by walking northwest along Via Palestro until we reached Via Venti Settembre. It was roughly a 10-minute trek but with the promise of gelati right around the corner, no one was complaining... or at least that's what I thought. Gelateria La Romana has been around for 69 years and unlike the usual window-type shops that we've been to, this one has some seats and tables inside the store. But just like every great gelateria, there was a long line that greeted us at the door. Their gelati were in closed metal containers but all the flavors they had were written in Italian on the chalkboards at the top wall. If you're the visual kind who'd like to see what you'd order, then you'd have to rely on the Yelp photos or the gelati that were being served. Free samples (and translation) are available. Characteristics and taste were doubtlessly topnotch - smooth, creamy, bold, and every other aspect that goes into the making of high-quality gelato can be said. Same going rate as the other gelaterie - 2€ for a small serving of 1 or 2 flavors. But what made this different from the rest that we've tried were their chocolate faucets! If you get a cone, they'll ask if you want the bottom to be filled with dark or white chocolate. It's not the hard shell kind so don't let it drip when you're nearing the end. It's a bit of a walk from any of the nearest Metro stations, but there's a bus stop nearby. I have no idea which bus number runs this route but it's probably your best bet if you're taking public transportation. There are surely other modes so do your research and get yourself here. After sampling a lot of gelato during my time in Roma (I'm talking two-a-days for 5 straight days.....), I've gotta say that I think La Romana might be my favorite. Let's start with the interior: it's very clean with flavors written on wooden slats. The gelato is not in a clear glass visible freezer like in most places, but is kept in a sealed metal container. This is both good and bad, I suppose. Bad because you can't see inside there so it could be really nasty and you'd never know it (I highly doubt this is the case though). Good because I feel it keeps the gelato at a great temperature and there are less chances of contaminants and bugs and improper storage. There is also ample seating available and everything looks clean and well-maintained, despite how long the place claims to have been around. Definitely the best kept interior of all the gelato places I've had the fortune of trying. Service: the girl who took our money at the register wasn't very friendly. The ice cream maiden dishing out our goodies, however, was great. Very nice and let us try a flavor or two. I think almost all the staff here can speak English so don't be intimidated by the all-Italian menu. Goodies/price: the gelato was super creamy and delicious. If you want, they will drizzle the inside of your cone with a dash of white or dark chocolate-- your choice. For a small cone, you can choose two flavors. It only comes to a meager 2€-- one of the cheapest I've encountered. However, for the quality of the gelato, I probably would pay more than normal (Generally, I think the avg is 2.50€ for a small cone of two flavors). I had a scoop of the pistachio and a scoop of some chocolate chip tiramisu flavor. Both of them were great and went well together. They even give you the option for whipped cream on top (some places charge extra for whipped cream or chocolate in the cone, this place does not). They ran out of the coffee flavor that I think my husband wanted, so I just ordered 4 of the flavors that I actually recognized off of the menu (I am sure they had an English menu somewhere...I just didn't see it). For our last gelato in the country, it was not bad! Definitely worth a trip for sure. To be honest though, it didn't really leave an impression, since I literally don't remember what we got and how it tasted. Incredible!! Highly rated for a reason. Don't be scared of the line, it will likely be out the door but it moves very quickly. So many things to choose from and everything is spectacular. My favorite is the coffee or pistachio with coffee whipped cream on top. Inside is very nice, modern and clean. After ordering your food you can go to the end and watch them prepare new batches. Only drawback I would say about this place is that there is very limited seating due to large crowds, but this is not a big deal. If you're looking for a fantastic gelateria, this is it!! read more

This was the only gelato I tried while in Rome for 10 days. True story. It was delicious. I tried pistachio, nutella, and almonds. Very sweet but good!. Loved it and wish i had tried it in a cone and wish I'd tried cookies and cream. The girl was kinda ride to us, maybe bc we were speaking English instead of Italian....but those flavors weren't covered in the Italian language software. Lol. She softened up towards the end. There are now a few around the city, but the original is a great little walk outside of the main tourist zone, and depending upon the day and time you head by there could be a line out the door. It moves fast and when you're talking about the best gelato around it's worth a few extra minutes. The staff is really cool, they speak English and will gladly let you try a few different flavors as you decide what you're in the mood for that day. Here is the tip that sets his place above all others... They have a chocolate fountain running all the time and will fill up the bottom of your cone with a perfect little treat when you get to the end. Quite possibly the best gelato I've had in Italy - and I've been eating about two per day for week. The flavors are by far the most interesting like gianduja with hazelnut and ricotta with cookie bits. I had the gianduja and toasted cookie one. It was heavenly. After I finished the whole thing I almost wanted to go back and get another serving. It was that good. The gianduja flavor had such a strong hazelnut flavor it tasted like it was just the nut paste. Yet it was chocolate based, and quite different from all he Nutella/bacio/nocciola flavors. Just go there and try for yourself. When in Rome... eat all of the gelato! But make it a priority to come here! We spent 36 hours in Rome the first time we came and ate here 3 times. As we walked the streets our first night (we stayed in a non touristy part of the city) we noticed that people kept walking by with gelato that just looked amazing. So we followed the people and they led us here. For 2.50 Euro you get a cone and 2 scoops. This isn't your average scoop shop though. They have faucets that pour chocolate out. When it's your turn to order you'll be asked if you want white or milk chocolate. Your cone is then put under the faucet and chocolate is sent right into the cone. Then you choose your gelato flavors -- they're all written in Italian (and they aren't real friendly if you don't speak the language) you can't go wrong. Lastly they top it with fresh whipped cream. I wish I can rate this place 100 stars! On our way from the train station, our taxi driver insisted we give the gelateria a try. I was so lucky to be staying at the hotel right next to this place!! We were in rome for 3 days and I literally had gelato at least twice a day. Once after lunch time and the second time would be late night after dinner maybe around 11pm - 12am. I am not even a fan of ice cream but this gelato was to die for! I sampled a few flavors but my favorite was the chocolate and the fior di latte which was basically just a sweet cream. They asked if I wanted nata on top which was a whipped topping. you could choose from different ones such as coffee but I chose the regular whip cream. We got lucky because this was the first gelateria we went to. Since it was so close to our hotel so we went twice. Line is shortest when they open around noon. Second visit was Sunday around 7pm and the line was around the block but it moves fast. The best gelaterias keep their gelato in steel bins under the counter.
