Ok, here comes the ex-pat with a ho-hum review of what seems like an iconic solid 5 star gelateria. It's fun inside, flavors are incentive. And they may even mix well. And very likely using a warm process. Very clean, payment / ordering process is efficient. That's where I say everything is good. The gelato - really not for me. It's very very sweet for my tastes. Which might be fine as it's nothing I would crave to eat more than once in a while - and not more than a few spoonfuls at a time. Not to worry, that's all you're getting anyway as the scoopers seem trained to smooth on your gelato like a thin coat of spackle, without ever filling the hole. That's all. I have to try some more around Rome to see if I'm bringing my untrained perspectives into this forum. As they say.... When in Rome.....
Yummy gelato! My family and I went here while on vacation in Rome. The line was long but went very fast. They have an efficient system! I ordered the vanilla gelato and it was yummy! There are other places we thought were better but they seemed to have unique flavors and it was a fun experience overall! :)
Love this place. The fact they have a nut allergy sheet and are SO accommodating made this mammas heart full. My son was the happiest as many places could not guarantee nut free options or cross contamination. This place gave us a sheet that showed nut free options, made us watch, they used clean new spoons for every scoop. Nut free gelato were dark chocolate and vanilla which my son said was the best ! They have a variety of flavors to choose from. The gelato's were yummy. We had hazelnut , matcha and chocolates which had nut. The cones are filled with chocolate fondue and then gelato scoops. It is SO yummy. They have to go options as well. Famous for their cakes as well. There was a line of people grabbing desserts to go. I was so full from the gelatos if not I would have tried some desserts as well. Highly recommend this place for the best Gelato options.
Walked from our hotel to La Romana (after the sun went down) and was met with a long line! The display cases were enticing while you waited. The place was super clean and everyone was waiting patiently. Fast and friendly staff and the prices don't break the bank! The gelato was excellent! Chefs kiss.
Great gelato spot, pretty close to the train station. It was busy but the line moved quick. Lots of different flavors to choose from. So many options to choose from and I didn't know which one to get since they were all so good and decadent. So I decided since it was my last night in Italy before my flight back, I went for the 4 scoops with a cone, because why not? I had no regrets lol. I'd come back - staff is super friendly and the shop is very clean.

So so so so delicious & mouth watering gelato. I have never ever tasted anything close to these flavors. I was hooked on to this place my first try. Definitely try this place out. The staff is friendly in attentive attitude. It's nice and clean I didn't see any toilets. read more

Long tradition (70 years) with 21st century storefront, very inviting and a great stop after walking for hours under Roman sun... Price is just fair, €2.70 for 3 flavors on a fresh cone. The cream topping (I ordered coffee flavor) at the end is just amazing. read more

The best gelatto hands down!!! Thank to our airbnb Luigi for recommending it when we visited Rome in September 2015! Incredible flavors!!! We tried different varities including chocolate, lemon, walnuts, pistachio but the most interesting and indulging had to be Ricotta with figs and honey, creamy, luscious goodness! read more
We spent 4 nights in Rome while we were in Europe and our first night there we got in pretty late... around 8pm. We stayed near the Termini station and it was raining that night so we decided to eat around the area. After dinner, we wanted dessert so I found La Romana on Yelp and it wasn't too far from where we were. It's located on the corner of the building and hard to miss. When you go in, ask for the English menu since their menu is all in Italian. You get to select 2 or 3 flavors. For 2 flavors I think it was 2.40 euros. You also have the option of getting a cup or cone (at no extra charge). They fill up the cone with white or milk chocolate as well if you want. I got the hazelnut and chocolate. The hazelnut had chunks of real hazelnut in it and was delicious! We liked the place so much we ended up going back twice for the remainder of our trip! It has not even been a month yet and I'm already missing their gelato! read more

This was delicious, but was really more like ice cream and not high fat gelato. The options for chocolate in the bottom of the cone and whipped cream on top are a nice addition. read more

Hands down my favorite gelato in Italy. Hands up, two of them to my face of scoops of this amazingly delicious gelato. This is what gelato is supposed to be. The absolute perfect texture, flavor, consistency. Plus, they scoop from stainless steel containers which means the gelato maintains its freshness longer than most places. For tourists, they speak English and despite the long lines their service is excellent. They keep the line moving efficiently but also give each customer a lot of attention so that you can try multiple flavors. If you've ever wanted to know what really good, authentic gelato tastes like, this is your place. It this too much praise? No, this artisan (phrase accurately used here) gelato warrants all of it. Stand in line with the rest of the believers and locals because its worth any and all wait. Mi amo, La Romana! read more
I'm not exaggerating when I say this place is a slice of heaven. We randomly found this place on my first night in Rome and it was so amazing we came back every single day on our trip. They have desserts and gelato but sadly, I never got to try the dessert because the gelato had me hooked! I recommend going with the medium cone for 2.50. DO NOT SKIP ON THE CONE! I'm going to repeat, do not skip on the cone because in that crunchy, delectable cone they put your choice of milk chocolate or white chocolate at the bottom. From there, if you go with the medium, you get 3 scoops of the creamiest most delicious gelato ever. To finish it off, you get a choice of regular or chocolate whipped cream on the top. This isn't regular whipped cream from the can my friends, this cream is best described as a fluffy mousse. There is a reason this place has a line out the door but don't let that stop you from trying it. The employees are super sweet, efficient, and quick so it moves pretty fast. Also, the flavors are all in italian but the employees will let you try as many samples as you want. Man I'm going to miss this place! read more
Best gelato in Rome! It's also one of the cheapest places, I believe it was 2.50 euro for three scoops in a cone! And you know it's good when there's always a line, a lot of them being locals. The menu is in all Italian, but the workers there speak pretty good English. Splurge and get a cone and you can choose whether to line the bottom with white or dark chocolate! They also sell brioche con gelato and other desserts. Get the whipped cream on the gelato. I got pistachio, bacio, and biscotto della nonna. Definitely get the biscotto one, it's AMAZING! read more
Gelateria La Romana was ridiculously good - probably the best ice cream I've ever had. We tried a lot of gelato during our trip to Italy, and this was the best experience by a landslide. It was extremely authentic, as in, I didn't see another tourist anywhere, the ice cream is made on-site, and they even had some organic offerings. The place was modern, stylish, and packed with real, live, Italians who were not trying to sell me something. In fact, the place was buzzing with patrons and it was midnight on a weekday. It was also delicious in a way I haven't tasted before, and relatively affordable at €2.50 for a small cone with two flavors. La Romana is not located in a touristy area, and it's a little inconvenient to access from a metro stop, but it is absolutely worth the 10 or 11 blocks walk from the Repubblica stop. Plus you get to walk off all those calories! The menu is only in Italian without translation, but some of the employees speak English and were very gracious to give us samples and help us figure out what we liked. The flavors are a bit unlike the other touristy gelaterias - they appear to specialize in nutty and creamy flavors. There aren't the brightly colored fruity gelato flavors that are found elsewhere in the city. Every flavor I tried was perhaps the best version I've ever seen. Pistachio, hazelnut, panna cotta, zabaione - they all destroyed my tastebuds with awesomeness. I will never be able to fully enjoy a Baskin Robbins cone ever again. Two features I've never seen before - they fill the bottom of your cone with a thick white or dark chocolate sauce, and they top your cone with a rich whipped cream that comes in one of four flavors (get the zabaione!). The gelato was already delicious enough, but these two extras really put it over the top for world class ice cream. It makes me sad that I live halfway around the world from this place. If La Romana is ever looking for a franchise opportunity in Texas, I'll quit my job today and start putting Dairy Queen out of business. TIPS: 1. Do not trust Yelp's mapping feature to find this place. Yelp shows the right address, but the map places it at the wrong area. La Romana is located at the corner of Via XX Septembre & Via Castelfidardo. Use your orienteering skills. 2. La Romana is located just a few blocks away from the absolutely best pizza in the city - La Pinsere. It would be a meal of the gods to combine follow that pizza with this gelato. read more

This was the best gelato we had all trip. The flavors were rich, the cones were perfect, the staff super friendly and most of all, the decor was so modern and chic, we just sat for an hour (and maybe had two cones...). Loved that we found this place by our hotel! read more

Before arriving in Italy, I probably got a dozen gelateria recommendations. Half of the people couldn't even remember the name of their favorite spot, so I took to Yelp and found La Romana, which was conveniently around the corner from my hostel Upon arrival, I knew it had to be good, with Italians and tourists alike lining up around the sidewalk waiting for a taste. I went with pistachio and stracciatella in a cone with dark chocolate syrup at the bottom and chocolate whipped cream. All for a cool €2.50. It was delicious. Their pistachio is perfect and nutty, while the whipped cream is the perfect add on to any treat. The real kicker was the hot chocolate syrup at the bottom of the cone. While some of it had hardened, like in a Drumstick, the last bite of the cone surprised me with chocolate warmth. Best gelato in Rome. But then again, it's the only gelato I had. Stayed across this place our first time in Rome, and wondered why there was a long line for gelato. Stood in line for 2 hours wondering what the fuzz is about. The soft gelato here is unlike any that I've had in Italy. This place only uses fresh, high quality ingredients made in-house. Fast forward 2 years later, and we're back in Rome once again. This time we stayed further out of town. We were hoping to find another hole in the wall gelato place..... Only to have us craving for this place once again. Best gelato! Several people, including some tour guides had been recommending this place. They have a few locations in Rome it seems, the one closest to my hotel was a 15 minute walk. So on my last night I came by (should have tried it sooner!). The line was out the door even though it was past 10 p.m. Good selection of flavors, good/friendly staff. They had other deserts too. The format is pretty much the same at most of these gelato places, pay for what & how much you are getting & then get in line with your ticket/token to give your flavor choices......enjoy! read more

Delizioso! I had the fig & ricotta. Also tried the dal 1947. Both were a bit sweet for my taste, but the gelato itself was creamy & delightful. I will definitely return to try other flavors. Neat find! Long lines. There is no English menu. I ordered what I could read and chose coffee and pesto pistachio. Both were practically melting but very satisfying. They also have two chocolate options for the bottom of your cone! I went with Nutella. read more

Terrific gelato, great variety, good prices. Hype = live up to. Little bit of a line when we got there around 10, but no more than a 10 minute wait. Plenty of time to make the impossible decision between all the flavors. In a medium size, I had Grandma's cookies, hazelnut with roasted almonds, and dark chocolate. The dark chocolate was prime, with a nutty, deeply rich cocoa flavor without being icy. The hazelnut flavor had an intense, but not overpowering nut flavor to it, really well done. And the cookies was just downright tasty, with even more hazelnut. They all made for a great combination. Stick with the gelato - if you want to focus on the flavors themselves, avoid the chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Trust me, you won't need those to feel like you spoiled yourself. The ice cream speaks for itself, and it'll be cheaper! read more
FAVORITE gelato spot in Rome. This means a lot because I managed to eat gelato 6 times in the 3 days I was there. You could say I was on a mission to find the best gelato. So one reason why this place is above the rest of the fact that that have these fountains of either milk chocolate or white chocolate that they drizzle in your cone before even scooping the gelato. Second reason, i absolutely fell in love with the flavor with the name biscotto in it, which was basically their cookies and cream, but completely different than the cookies and cream you get in the states. Even their plain milk flavor was amazing! The pistachio is also very true to the core of the flavor. Needless to say, many other gelato shops in Rome are still amazing. I just somehow ended finding myself here twice when I only went to the other places once. read more

Best ice cream in Rome and one of the best in my life. Long line despite Monday night in winter. I had four scoops of pistachio, hazelnut, white tiramisu n penna cotta for 3 euros. Also tasted, courtesy of the nice woman in charge, crema 1947 (cream n lemon flavor), almond chocolate, etc. All super rich, creamy, silky n flavorful. Lots of nice ice cream cakes, including cute little wedding cakes on display. It's a short 15 minute walk from Rome main train station. Ideal for a stopover before or after a train ride. read more

You can't go to Italy without having gelato and you can't come to Rome without coming here. Delicious is an understatement in describing the flavor. While the gelato is great don't just have a cup or cone of it. Try one of the delicious cake and gelato combinations they have in the case. The hazelnut is to die for. This will definitely be a place we go each time we visit Rome and have a hankering for gelato. read more
Thank you Yelp for recommending this fabulous gelato place. We went on our first night in Rome and it ruined us for any other gelato we had! Haha...but seriously the previous reviews don't lie....you must go here! We walked about 20 minutes from our hotel despite having a gelato spot right outside our hotel (and many along the way). We walked down a very empty street wondering if we were off track but when we arrived, there was a line up of locals. No English when looking at the flavours on the board (a good sign!) but you also couldn't see the flavours and point to them because they were in canisters with the tops closed. I had the stracciatella and chocolate in a cone and Rob had pistachio and vanilla topped with whipped cream in a cup. I loved that they give you an option of melted white or dark chocolate I'm the bottom of your cone. What a nice touch! Enjoy! read more

Not only is the gelato delicious... the freaking "crumbles." It's like a little cookie crumble on top of gelato. If you buy one they send you home with the cute little container! Just return your jar to the counter and they will hand you one that's all packaged up. We came one night and was back the next day to get two more crumbles! My husband is obsessed with them!! read more
This is hands down the best gelato we had in Italy, or anywhere. It's so cheap at 2 euros for a cup or cone containing 2 flavors. Make sure to get their house made whipped cream on top, it's amazing. My favorite flavor was the cookies and cream. The menu is entirely in Italian but many of the staff speak English and can help translate. Definitely worth the wait if there is a line! read more
La Romana was the best gelato I've ever eaten. They make it there, and have been since 1947. I chose a "small" Fiordelatte (flower of milk) and Sacher (like the chocolate torte flavor) for 2 Euros, or about $2.30 US, which included chocolate or vanilla sauce in the cone, AND home made whipped cream on top! I only added the chocolate at the bottom of my cone and luckily I had plenty of napkins because I forgot and bit into it making a delightful mess like a kid eating a sundae:) The consistency is lighter and smoother than any gelato I've tasted, and the flavors range from the unusual to the approachable, like tiramisu. read more

I've spent a good deal of time in various Italian cities and elsewhere in Europe and have had gelato from many shops, but this is hands down the best I've ever had, period (a place in Athens was second!). And amazingly, for about the same price as any other. The flavors are wonderfully complex and rich. Can't say any more. Simply delicious! For tourists: Giolitti is perhaps the most touted, best known gelato place in Rome, and it is a lovely older, much fancier shop with a good product. If you want the overall experience, by all means go there and you will enjoy it. But, if you want to taste the best gelato in town, this is the place. Practical tips: English menu available at the cash register. After you look over the choices and decide what size serving(s) you want, go to the cash register, pay for your order, then take your receipt to the counter to have your order scooped and filled. If you are round the area, don't miss this one. Their crepe and gelato are amazing. It is a little hard to order if you don't know Italian but if you are not picky about flavors, even you pick Radom 3, it wouldn't go wrong, that's how we did it. I recommend zabaione and crema 1947 read more
My favorite gelato / dessert shops in Rome! They have a lot of unique flavors but my favorites are the cream based ones like tiramisu, ciocolatino di luisa, cioccolato fondente, crema di castagna piemonte, etc. The shop is modern feeling and the servers were super friendly! During my week in Rome I went here several times, as they are all over the city. They also have other desserts like crepes but I didn't get a chance to try them. read more
