Went on a recommendation by a customer and got the special of the day lasagna. You would think that your daily special should be made fresh for that day. I don't know if it was the norm or we had a mishap portion but the lasagna was very dry almost like they microwaved the portion I high for 5 mins too much all of the edges were so dry we couldn't eat it. I wish I had taken a picture. Anyway, music inside was good nice atmosphere but a definite NO on food we also got soup which was 4-5 out of 10. Go elsewhere read more

We stumbled across this restaurant as we were heading elsewhere. The other place felt too heavy and the menu here looked just perfect for us. My daughter saw oysters on the menu and that sealed the deal. We had 6 oysters, all delicious. They are expensive so we limited the number to 6. I started with the goat cheese, fennel and citrus salad. This was so delicious! It wasn't a "salad" more of a beautiful plated cheese with the shaved fennel and citrus on top. It was presented beautifully and tasted delicious. One child got the fritto misto which was great. My other child and I both got the grilled octopus and it was literally the best octopus I have ever had. It was tender and delicious. The sauce was pretty and added some spice to the dish. We were walking by this place and it looked like it had a great atmosphere. They took us right in for dinner. We had the oyster special that included two locally and two from France. They tasted fresh and salty,perfect. We ordered the seafood mix and zucchini flower pasta. The seafood was very lightly battered and not overcooked. It was a good dish o would order again. The pasta had a great taste to it. But, we did not get any flowered vegetables as advertised. Still a good dish. The only down fall to the evening was the wait at the end. First up, this place was one of the most reviewed places on Yelp...which is how I discovered it. I wanted some place that wasn't too touristy and was a good place to sit and relax for lunch. The ambiance was great, quiet..cozy and off the beaten path. Pizza was served by an older Italian woman (not sure if she was the manager/owner but she definitely had a sense of authority over the other staff). The meal was only a pizza, so nothing mind blowing but it was hot, fresh and good. It did take a little longer than I'd have liked to get the check...but maybe that's an Italian thing? read more

We stumbled upon this restaurant while searching how to eat like a local in Venice. Many of the Venetian restaurants are tourist traps ... and atmospherewise, its hard to tell which are which sometimes. Their 'claim to fame' is that one night Johnny Depp and his entourage came in and proceeded to eat every meal here while he was shooting the movie, 'The Tourist' in Venice. His jacket and photos hang on a wall in the back and his signature remains on the ceiling. Make sure you have dinner reservations made, either by calling or through a hotel concierge, because it is a rather small place. The outside tables in the rear ally fill up the fastest. The Covid-shy may hesitate to eat inside as the tables are close together and the space is intimate. Lunch is easier ... and you can likely walk in. The options are a 'fancier' menu with local ingredients presented with a gourmet flair. Or pizza ... which is made using good or premium (these are the choices) ingredients. We had the fancier dishes for dinner and the pizza for lunch. Both were the best meals we ate in Venice. The first night, we were next to an English couple who ate there one night and canceled all their other dinner reservations and ate each meal there for the remainder of their trip. (The wife ordered the same dish several times) Often inadvertent repeat business is had. For our dinner, I had the spaghetti with local clams, grilled local vegetables and tiramasu. The 'plus one' had the fish with pea puree. We drank the 'house red' wine, which was good ... if not a bit light bodied. Everything was fantastic. The spaghetti with clams wasn't really anything I couldn't get in the states but it was prepared well. The fish was the star of the show. The veggies were fresh and done perfectly. Tiramasu was world class! Onto the pizzas ... I ordered the premium pizza with buffalo mozzarella, pecorino and local salami. 'Plus one' ordered the margherita with mushrooms. She felt it was the best pizza she had in Italy. I felt it completely blew away many American pizzerias ... but the pizza from Naples has my heart as the best. The crust isn't as light and foldable as Neopolitan pizza and the sauce is not as acidic. The cheese is also shredded and spread across the whole pizza, as in the US. It was a damn good pizza! The prices are reasonable (for Venice) here. Dinner for two with drinks and dessert was under $200. The dishes are on the small side, so you'll likely have to order more than one thing if your appetite is a large one. The decor is a bit dark and dated ... the maroon wall colors and black painted bathrooms feel stuck in the early/mid-2000's. The exposed brick and cave-like interiors felt more like a restaurant from the United States than from Italy. We greatly enjoyed our time here and the food was the best we had in Venice. The staff was very warm and welcoming, especially our waitress ... the one with the sparkles on her face. Overall, we can't wait to return the next time we are in Venice and highly recommend you put this restaurant on your list. read more

Thanksgiving dinner was a little different this year. Instead of turkey, stuffing, and pie, we opted for duck, scallops, and tiramisu. I don't know if I can profess my love for duck properly, so just understand that it's a lot. Like a LOT a lot. The duck at Rosa Rossa is amongst the best I've ever had. If you can't decide on what to order, this is a solid choice you won't regret. I never get scallops because they cost too much but when in Venice, and on vacation...you make exceptions. These too did not disappoint. Yes, they're pricey but practically melted in my mouth. We finished (really we inhaled) the tiramisu, finishing off a truly excellent dinner. You've also probably read about Johnny Depp's jacket in the back, and signature on the ceiling. Take a peek because they're something fun to see. read more

My husband and I stumbled upon this gem during our honeymoon last weekend, and let me tell you- we enjoyed every second we spent at this charming restaurant. The enterior was charming, but we sat outside, next to the kitchen window and you guys- the beautiful smell wafting from the kitchen was amazing! Our waiter was FABULOUS, I asked him what to order "do you like food?" he asked "we LOVE food, all food" we replied, "you must try our tasting menu, 12 courses for 2 people" You guys, the food was unbelievable! We had 3 courses of fresh fish, then 3 courses of tartare, thinly sliced beef carpaccio, pork, etc the most unbelievable italian ham I've ever had, the sauces on the plate were so good, we mopped up every bit with our bread- also excellent! Then came the courses of duck breast, pork, more beef, and the most delicious razor clams i've ever had. Then we saw another table order the crepes.... OMG it was amazing! I made eye contact with our waiter "I need one" I'm so glad I did, it was served with homemade gelato best experience at a restaurant ever, by the end of the meal my husband and I felt like family. My party's lapse in judgment is not the restaurant's fault. Very good fritto misto. Squid, seppia, shrimp, mussels, langoustine, sardines, and some veg, all dipped in a thin batter and deep fried. Seafood added at different times to be sure they are all properly cooked when plated. Freshness evident. The nero di seppia is very good. One of the classic dishes of Venezia, sepia stewed in its own ink. Incredibly tender, pronounced briny flavor with citrusy notes on the finish. Melting caramelized onions add a pleasing sulfurous taste and good sweetness. Tourist dishes are a disaster. Mushy cheese filled ravioli in a tomato based sauce, covered with more cheese and an equally mushy lasagna with a bizarre, sweet "red sauce". No, no, 1000 times no. If it's not part of the Venetian culinary scene, DON'T ORDER IT. Friendly service. English menus. Fluent English. Decent wine list. Good emphasis on wines of the Veneto. Inexpensive. It's too easy to end up in a rather ordinary and unremarkable restaurant when in such a densely touristy area like Venice. La Rosa Rossa was a pleasant surprise! The dining area is small so we were concerned that we wouldn't be able to get a last-minute table on a Saturday night. The host was able to seat us as long as we finished within 90 minutes. No problem, we're Americans! We opted for the "chef's choice" 7 tapas option. These are 7 small plates selected by the chef and may vary each night. We had tuna carpaccio, sea bass carpaccio, veal carpaccio, roast veal, ravioli, and two others that I can't remember. They were prepared very well and we ordered another of the sea bass because it was so good (had a bit of a ceviche quality with a lime juice and chive dressing). Our daughter had fried calamari which was very good and our son had a margherita pizza which was also very good. Portion sizes are small, relative to what we saw on this trip to Italy so you may need to add a few additional things after placing your initial order. That's far better, IMO, than feeling like you're a slave to finishing what's on your plate. It's hard to classify this place as Italian -- it's just really fresh, well prepared food that you'd expect in any international city. We spent 190 EU which included a couple of drinks -- very reasonable by American standards. So far, this is the only remarkable restaurant we've patronized on this trip to Italy and the only one we'd recommend to others. read more

A very nice visit It was late before we got motivated to leave our hotel and venture out for dinner. Somehow my wife came up with this restaurant and google maps led the way. We have really enjoyed our visit to Venice, all the sites, the canals, and the labyrinth of roads. We finally reached our destination. He was apparently filming a movie and ate at La Rosa Rossa, signing the ceiling and leaving a jacket that is on display. Pretty cool. For food, I ordered a pizza called Boschiva, made with Venetian salami, mushrooms and Gorgonzola cheese. It was very good. I love Gorgonzola cheese and it worked very well as a pizza cheese. It was also a very attractive pizza the way the large thin slices of salami were placed. They used canned mushrooms, the second time I've run across that in two pizzas, so maybe that is normal. La Rosa Rossa has more than just pizza, my wife had a dish, I lost the name but it also had mushrooms (canned), Gorgonzola, eggplant and polenta. I had a large sample and thought it delicious. Service was fine, there were smiles, and the food ready in a reasonable amount of time, It was a very nice visit. read more

I had one of the best meals of my life here tonight! Just spectacular! They take Venetian food and hospitality to another level. We ended up coming here after hearing it's a favorite of Johnny Depp's (who knew), and it was definitely the right choice. We indulged for my grandmother's 70th birthday - went for the cheese plate, a salad to share, king prawns, lamb ribs and 2 pasta dishes plus a bottle of merlot. And WOW the cheese plate hit it out of the park for me. All white Italian cheeses were served with apricot preserves and a few bread points. If Rosa Rossa's chef selected the cheese pairings - I'm just amazed with his/her selection. Mind blowing. Don't miss this. The king prawns were also incredibly memorable for me, and made me feel like a true Venetian. Served properly with a seafood fork, bowl for shells, and garnished with lemon, I really enjoyed getting hands on with my food here! What an experience! I could go on and on about this meal but I'll finish by talking about the dessert we shared. A one of a kind creation of rosemary cake covered with white chocolate and then doused with passion fruit crème anglaise. It was whimsically shaped into a "popsicle" which brought a big grin to my face. Even though they didn't have the limoncello cake my grandma requested, we were repeatedly offered a round of limoncello on the house. This is how great hospitality is done! Their claim to fame is that Johnny Depp are and partied here while filming "The Tourist" and some paraphernalia and photos adorn the back room. My lobster came out on the largest plate I'd ever seen, and my partner's dish came out in five different bowls and was about 3x too much food for one person to comfortably eat. Wow! We came here after the first few places we tried to go to were closed on a Sunday at 5:30, and boy are we glad we did! We started with mussels and caprese, and both were excellent. My fiancée had spicy squid fettuccine, which she liked, but the masterpiece had to be the chef's lasagne, which I had. Delicioso! It had to be one of the best, if not the best, lasagne I've ever had. Great location, great food. Came here twice during my stay in Venice. Service staff are warm and respectful. Food is reasonably priced, not cheap but you definitely get what you pay for. Recommend sitting outside on the Calle dei Assassini during sunset to people watch and feel the breeze. The lasagnetta (house recipe) was very rich and the meat was perfectly cooked. I selected this restaurant after reading reviews on TripAdvisor. I should have checked Yelp. We arrived last night around 8:45pm and were sat in the back outside. Since we were so far from the daily specials written on the wall, I had my boyfriend take a picture of the wine so we would be prepared when the waiter arrived. As we waited for our order to be taken, we hear a loud argument in the kitchen. Something was wrong and the staff was very upset. Soon afterward, the man came to our table visibly upset. He seemed angry. As my husband brought up the picture on his phone to order the wine, the man said we were "like the Chinese". This awful comment was a horrific combination of rudeness and racism I don't often experience. When it was my turn to order, I attempted to ask for the octopus salad from the display counter. I was quickly interrupted my the man as he began to yell at me. Yes, this guy yelled at me for attempting to order the octopus salad. I am serious. He said that if I wanted to order from the display counter, I was to get out of my seat and walk to the front of the restaurant and tell him what I wanted. He would not allow me to order the octopus salad from my table. I ordered from the menu instead. I was shocked and embarrassed that I chose this restaurant for my group. I was uncomfortable and anxious that this man would come back and yell at me again. He never came back to the table. Other staff helped us. Everyone else was nice and kind. But it was too late.
