I was in the neighborhood and decided to visit this bakery. It was on my to-visit places in Etobicoke, so I was happy that I finally got a chance to do so! It looked like a place that has not changed in many decades- so it had a vintage vibe. During my visit, it was quite busy as it was just after 12 noon on Saturday. I read that this place has very good pastries, so that is what I decided to purchase. There were two friendly ladies working behind the counter, so I called one of them to ask for help. She informed me that each item is priced by weight, so after confirming the prices, I purchased three cannolis (three different flavours) and one cream-filled doughnut. Then she let me know that I can pay for them at the checkout close to the exit. After paying for the items, I brought them home to try with my husband. We enjoyed both items- however, if we had to pick our favourite, it would be the cannolis. The exterior was so crunchy (and very satisfying) and the filling was smooth and creamy. Each flavour had the right amount of sweetness to satisfy our cravings! The doughnut was good- it had the smooth and creamy custard filling, but the dough tasted a bit hard (so it was not as pillowly as we thought). The food is generally good, and I have enjoyed most of the items I have purchased. Unfortunately, the desserts have been disappointing and did not meet the same standard as the rest of the food. My biggest concern, however, is the customer service. The staff working in the food area appeared unfriendly and unwelcoming. During my visit, the employee at the deli handled my sliced mortadella carelessly, which came across as disrespectful and unprofessional. The cashier also lacked basic customer service skills--there was no greeting, no smile, and no "thank you" at the end of the transaction. I understand that everyone has difficult days, but customer-facing staff represent the business and set the tone for the customer experience. Good food can bring people in, but poor service can make customers think twice about returning. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and invests in improving the overall customer service experience. read more

The quality of this place is diminishing. Many cakes are also Dufflet cakes and not made these, but they change the plate it sits on. My boyfriend brought me a cake for my birthday which had a dead fly on it- won't be buying pastries from here any longer. Maybe just deli and bread. Clearly not fresh quality read more

3.5* - as it was cheap for pastries. I came an hour prior to closing, so I hope this is still a fair assessment. Half the shelves were empty, which was to be expected. Interior looks as if it's been the same for at least 20-30yrs. It could use a refresh, if owners really cared. We got 5 items and it came to just over $6, so a little over $1/ea. Pastries are smaller than other places, BUT price is by weight - ~$25/kg. No price/name signs on the pastries in the glass case. You just hafta ask. Here, by order of what I liked were: cannolis, small cheesecake bite, & then then cream puffs (vanilla, then chocolate). Actually, small sizes but cheaper prices were appreciated because they're usually too big for 1 person. Like all bakeries, I'm sure the earlier you go in the day, the better the selection! Terrible product, terrible service, terrible people and extremely rude and disrespectful. I ordered a vegan cake for wife's birthday. The cake was very dry and tough. I returned it and they tried to convince me that it is perfect. The decision maker says that he will not give me a refund so I got up to leave the store. He followed me and demand that I do not walk away from him when he is talking to me. I am clearly older than this guy who is now talking to me like a child being punished. I can only conclude that because I am black he feels like it is fine to do so. I really do feel that the treatment was racially motivated. I will never do business here again!!! This is a sad review to write since I practically grew up on La Rose Bakery. We used to come in every Sunday after church and, while the place was always packed, it felt like a community. The buns were always so fresh, the chicken fingers and potato wedges mouth-watering, and the old school Italian charm very welcoming. When I was a teenager I would go out of my way to pick up the mini cheesecake bites. To this day, if I want a veal sandwich I always think of La Rose Bakery first. However, for years now I dread having to stop into the store. The food and smells are all the same that I remember, but I can't make it through a single visit without feeling downright sad for the staff. The customer service is usually fine, but you can tell the staff are miserable. And it's no wonder they are when the female manager barks orders at them like they are nameless sheep. I've never heard her call any of them by name, she just yells commands at them from across the bakery, making a very uncomfortable customer experience. I've noticed less crowds over the years and having to witness the demeaning work environment is definitely a factor. read more

Way back when I lived with my parents, we used to visit La Rose Bakery as a family. I particularly remember enjoying the Italian cookies, particularly the cannoli. My father liked the veal sandwich, my brother liked the freshest, crustiest bread and my mother liked the packages of deli ends - cold-cuts from the meat section that were a varied assortment of sausage and cured meat ends. I knew that I was getting older when, on a visit to my parents, I stopped by on a "bread run", with my young son in tow. The staff addressed me as "Signora". Wow, I thought that I was still too young for that! Anyway, here you have a slice of old-world culture in present-day Etobicoke. I don't know whether bakeries like La Rose are prevalent in Italy or Sicily, but La Rose has an old-world charm and is a worthwhile stop for any foodie who is into European bakery/deli stuff. You can choose from the offerings of the warming tray (lasagne, veal, arancini, etc.), the copious selections of the bakery, the tantalizing Italian desserts, and the cheeses and meats of the deli counter. But before you are done, look around, because La Rose often features some surprising imported products, just tucked away on some shelf. I have found some great olive oil here, as well various types of nougat involving insane quantities of fresh-tasting nuts. Last week, I came across a DIY Instant Risotto Milanese mix , imported from Italy and lurking on one of the shelves. Tentative but curious, I bought a package of it. I made this last night and it was superb! Now, I'm just worried that they'll run out before I make it back for more, because I finally made a risotto worthy of eating! This is a great traditional European Italian-Canadian style Bakery. They have a European line up system, so you order what you want from each specialized section before proceeding to the front cash to pay for it all. My family and I have been coming here my entire life. I love it!! Yes, service can be a tad slow at times but really it just means that they serve a large clientele that love coming into the store. Can't blame them that they're busy! I love their chicken fingers, my grandfather used to get them for me as a kid and now I still get them as an adult and they taste exactly the same...delicious! Love their fresh bread, the smell of the store also brings back a nice nostalgia. I probably love this place a little more than average because of all the nice memories, but overall it's a nice little place to shop. Good customer service in this place is sadly lacking. There is a particular service lady who takes offense too easily. On a particular occasion she was offended that I took water out of the serving tray for my bocconcini cheese. I reminded her that I was paying for it, which then perked her up. I couldn't quite make that one out. On another occasion, the same woman again was offended when I asked her if a particular cold plate dish was prepared that day. This was clearly, my mistake. If it doesn't look fresh then don't ask because it most likely wasn't prepared that day. She looked at me and responded as if I had just committed a mortal sin. How dare I ask her if her cold plate dish is prepared that day! This is not a place with happy workers. They are clearly miserable doing their jobs. As a result, you are not a happy customer coming out of there spending your money in an establishment that clearly does not deserve it. read more

I've been coming here my whole life and the smell of fresh bread that fills the street in the morning ignites immediate hunger and salivation. The bread and buns are delicious, but I especially love the olive loaf and the chocolate croissants. The potato wedges are a taste of nostalgia for me because I used to have them as a kid all the time, but even with my adult taste buds they taste great; well spiced and flavorful. You will also be hard pressed to find better cannoli in the city. La Rose has that recipe figured out...and I'll admit, I'm addicted to them! The deli is always fresh and it's very tasty. You may need to wait a few minutes for your turn, but the number of people coming through the place just speaks to the quality. Love this bakery! read more

While the food is very good and I've got no complaints about that, I will comment that the atmosphere and service is not great. I feel like of the handful of times that I've went, I had to work hard to find someone to help me. When there are people who walk in to buy big quantities of meat and cheese, I feel like they can forget about their other customers who are just there for a few pastries. Though sometimes I'm craving something baked, I tend to avoid La Rose Bakery out of concern of it being a negative experience. Not worth the bread if I feel ignored/dismissed by the staff! read more

I think the products offered at La Rose Bakery are amazing. At the beginning of the pandemic they were vigilant with their procedures for the number of people and how people entered the store. Now its a free-for-all. No one monitors how many people enter and physical distancing. There are no signs up anymore about how many people can enter the store. A real disappointment. Walking up and down the aisles at La Rose's is like a taking nostalgic trip to my high-school days when me and my boys would grab a thick, crispy, crunchy Calabrese style bread, walk over to the deli-counter, grab gobs of thick slabs of Prosciutto, Capocollo, Soppressata then make a last stop at the antipasto section and grab some hot roasted Italian Red Peppers! Absolutely amazing place! I've been coming here with my family since I was a little girl. As soon as you walk in, the scent of freshly baked bread hits you. Just by walking around, you can tell that this place is 100% authentic Italian. The desserts are honestly mouthwatering. Try the cannolis. I've tasted cannolis at other bakeries, tried to make homemade cannolis, and even tasted different kinds of cannolis in Italy. The ones from LaRose are definitely the best. I can say that about all the desserts there. At the back of the bakery there's a large variety of different kinds of breads. Buns, loaves, baguettes, etc. They're made fresh every day. Right across from the variety of coffee beans, theres many different kinds of olives. They also sell different kinds of products that are imported from Italy (the cookies are the best). The staff are friendly, the prepared food is good, and they have a nice selection of baked goods/deli meats. However, the owner is without question, rude to her employees, and she should be ashamed. While ordering some deli meat (less than a 5 min undertaking). I witnessed the owner berate her staff (while they're assisting customers) on cleaning the glass, organizing the meats, and Blah, Blah, Blah...Then, another customer asked if she had any (forgot the type of meat), and the owner stated...'apparently not here, but I know there is some downstairs' (they) must be too lazy to get it or something to that degree. Well, why wouldn't she get her lazy ass down the stairs, and retrieve this item, (while her staff was busy) for her customer. Is it too difficult to organize the meat or wipe the glass herself?- as a business owner myself, I have no issue assisting my employees, if they are too busy. Apparently, she's too busy gripping, and making a scene!. I expressed my heart-felt sympathy to the staff, and my voiced my opposition to this disrespectful behaviour by the employer!.
