Yelp gave this place high scores so it was worth trying out. The restaurant is located in a small converted house. It is simply furnished and very clean. The family run business was busy mid afternoon with inside customers and many to go orders. I ordered chilaquiles - eggs over tortilla chips and covered with salsa - deliciously homey and simple. Partner ordered chorizo on homemade tortilla - also very good. I felt like I was in someone's kitchen. Give it a try. read more

Hubs and I went here for dinner on a Friday night. We were in town for a night on our way to pick up our DD. The restaurant is a very unassuming building, that is a house converted into a restaurant. The inside is small, about 5-6 tables. While we were there it seemed like there were a lot of take out orders. We got chips and bean dip to start and hubs got a horchata. Chips were thick and extra crunchy and the the bean dip was creamy and topped with quest fresco crumbles. Horchata was huge and well spiced. Hubs got Chile rellanos, rice and beans. I got two soft tacos. One shrimp and one chicken. Rellano with cheese was excellent. The shrimp taco was the better of the two. The homemade salsa bar included 6 different options. All were very tasty with a wide range of heat. The service was friendly and fast. The menu prices have increased based on the stickers with handwritten numbers. The menu is a little smaller as well. Literally the BEST authentic Mexican restaurant in East Tennessee and pretentious Boone, NC. A true hidden gem. The owner is a fabulous lady who brings years of her culinary expertise of home culturally inspired cooking to her customers. Her vegetables are local, many home grown and seasonally there is a stand at the roadside. Nothing GMO or "truck ripened". They even have the "original" Coca-Cola in glass returnable bottles without high fructose corn sweeteners. Just like the ones we had growing up in the 1960's. All her sauces and condiments are freshly made. In these times of financial stress I don't go out as often but I do visit LaFamilia as often as possible; (Weekly ). There is also a small grocery store associated with the restaurant that has all authentic products from Mexico. I no longer have to order my favorites from the creepy corporate internet importers. Remember, support your local businesses or they will disappear. Try it once and judge for yourself. read more

What a hidden gem! We ordered a big meal for the family here and were not disappointed. The food was fresh, homemade and delicious. A great little place!! Friendly, excellent service. They give you warm chips and delicious hot bean dip when you sit down instead of the standard chips and salsa. And you can have as much as you want. So good!!! Dinner was fresh and well made and a little different from the usual Mexican food we all love.... But in a really good way. This is a tiny restaurant that knocked it out of the ballpark. We were greeted with fresh complimentary tortilla chips with warm bean dip and two hot salsas. This place is a gem! I use Yelp a lot while eating on the road. We were in Mountain City for a wedding and wanted a little lunch. I had seen this place while driving in and was curious. There were two possible Mexican choices. One looked like your generic Mexican restaurant. La Familia has homemade tortillas and homemade sauces. Delicious. Clearly family run, only seats about 20-25. Restaurant is attached to a small market. Guacamole was homemade and devoured. We had a selection and tacos and burritos. Chorizo, carne asada, shredded chicken and grilled chicken were all a hit. They will customize tacos with choice of toppings. Beware the red sauce has a definite kick, but the green sauce was a great choice too. They were out of pastor :(. No desserts was the biggest drawback as lunch was so good we wanted more. As I stated, a gem! read more
