I LOVE this restaurant. All of the daily soups are delicious - and I swear, magical if you are sick. I'll take a big serving and have it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner - take a shower, get a good night's sleep, and the next day? Better! The empanadas are soooo good. I can confidently say that the Desayuno La Sorpresa contained absolutely no surprises from its menu description or my friend, and frequent customer's, summary. It is also a steal at $11, because it contains basically three meals for the day: thinly-sliced steak, tasty scrambled eggs with tomatoes and onions, seasoned white rice, a perfect cheese arepa, and a soup bowl-sized cup of coffee or hot chocolate. I had to give away my steak to someone with a bigger appetite, and I was still too full to finish the rest. My Colombian friend likes the bakery, and my table enjoyed the fresh pan de queso and pan de bono. The staff was very friendly. It helps if you speak even the slightest bit of Spanish (at least enough to state the name of the thing you want to order, even in gringa pronunciation). read more

Was recommended this place as food being the best in town. We were very disappointed. Parking is awfully. Food was served cold, the Colombian taste was not there. To top it off, We bought a good amount of pastries, sodas(a whole pack of 24) 2 of each and a Colombian bag, for both we were quoted a price..., when I saw the receipt we were charged $5 extra per item-not what we were quoted. Sooooo disappointing, was hoping to visit a great Latin food place in town. I've had Colombian food before so I was really looking forward to coming here. Their bakery stuff is good, but the Restaurant experience was so unsatisfactory. Don't get me wrong, the staff is very nice and welcoming,but I was just not happy with the food. My husband and I ordered a simple chicken dish. We waited 40 minutes!! It wasn't even busy, there was only 3 other people there. I hoped that by the time the food came it was worth the wait, but boy was I wrong, the salad was old, the portion was small and the meat was dry. If I'm ever in the mood for something from their bakery ill just go there, but ill stay out of the restaurant. read more

It was our first time in this restaurant. It is really hard to find a decent Colombian restaurant, most of them have really crappy food. The food in La Sorpresa was OK, we had an Arepa con Queso which was OK, one with chicharrón and the other one with chorizo. The empanadas were clearly not fresh, they had been heated in a microwave, the buñuelos were cold and the coffee; for a Colombian place, was really bad. It was kind of dark and they always kept playing Salsa music, it's OK once in a while but not the whole time. Our waitress was kind. What I really liked was the shop next door that has a bakery and native products; the tamales are average, they should not put chicharrón in them, there should be pork meat, other than that I'd give it another chance for lunch or dinner to see how their signature dishes are. This is a Columbian Restaurant. I came to see what the buzz was about on a Sunday afternoon. It was busy w families & regulars.The service is very friendly- a genuine willingness to assist you with your Spanglish & to explain exactly what the dish includes. We had: fried fish appetizer, beans (red pinto style), rice, fried chicken cutlet, sweet plantaines, fried pork back (chicharone?), avocado(they give u like a whole + 1/2!), fried yucca, and an amazing sauce i could not get enough of- Anejo- spicy, citricy, onion-y goodness. The decor is hodge podge but colorful, Latin music in the back ground & a flat screen TV showing soccer & the Spanish channel. But my honest opinion is that the prices were a bit high for what we got & the flavors were not as good as the spot down the street (see my Yelp review). I would suggest the WHOLE fried Snapper dinner. Bathroom is micro small. Private but small parking lot. Also, there is a small store attached which offers Columbian imports on the side. read more

When you enter you have choice to sit down and eat which is to your right or the bakery and call ahead is to your left. I called ahead and picked up my food. Awful place. Found it on the internet. Music was extremely loud for a restaurant, poor service food was just average not enough to offset the long time it took to order and the dirty bathroom. Not a family place, I went on a Sunday afternoon and there was mostly male customers. Seemed more like a pub than a restaurant. Defenetly wont come back. read more

I found this place after seeking out Colombian food in Norwalk for the first time. I originally tried to go to La Orquidea Bakery but they have gone out of business. It is a very fun and funky place. Totally authentic. When I called I couldn't even get anyone to answer any questions for me in English, so I instantly thought "Damn, their food is going to be GOOD!". And it was. I went in on a Sunday morning and I was surprised that the dining room was about half full and they had about 5 servers between the bar and the dining room. The other section of the store seemed devoted to hot food for take out and Colombian imports. I had a delicious guanabana smoothie and an awesome breakfast consisting of one huge arepa, rice, eggs, and and decent sized, perfectly cooked steak on top of it all for 8 bucks. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that they seemed unconcerned with giving me service or getting me my check in a timely manner. This might just be a cultural thing, but I didn't like how I kept getting passed off from one server to the next. Still, well worth it for the authentic food and lively atmosphere. read more

Went to La Sorpresa on a Saturday lunchtime. I am Colombian so I know what authentic tastes like. The bakery side had everything typical of Colombian bakery items. Pandebono tasted AMAZING, everything was fresh and tasted better that what it looked like. on the restaurant side my family went to have some lunch. The decore is very typical of Colombian culture. Folk art, the spanish roof tiles and colors, the soccer game playing on the TVs and the music very much Colombian. The waitress was extremely patient with us since I was the only one who could speak Spanish and my boyfriend had a hard time deciding what to eat. I had Sancocho de gallina,- hen soup. it had yuca, potato,corn and plantain with a hen drumstick topped with fresh chopped cilantro. Served with a Maduro-Sweet friend plantain, White rice and half an avocado. OMG so good! tasted like it came from my mother's kitchen. My boyfriend had Sobrebariga asada - Seared Skirt steak, with beans, rice, sweet plantains, and fries mixed with fried yuca. He ate every single bite. He loved the Empanadas and the hot sauce it came with. We ended up heading back into the bakery after lunch and grabbing alot of pasteries and bakery breads to take home to eat. I Love this place! the only sad thing i may say is that they didnt have fresh baked Pan de Yuca. I have been searching for such a rare item. it is my favorite. read more

Pleasantly surprised at La Sorpressa that food was well cooked home down food with little to no flaws. The food was fresh, good pricing, interesting flavors and overall an enjoyable dining experiences. yes, this establishment played salsa music with tv during my dinner. That's why we dine at these wonderful places in our town.. After overlooking this place for many years I had a great evening and can recommend this who all seeking alternative cuisines. read more

I went there for breakfast on a sunday with my family. A table of 8 to be exact. Food was Ok but I was very disappointed with the fact that the owner keeps the tips and not the waitresses. This should be illegal because as a customer people tip for the waitress not for the owner. The owner gets paid for the food. I found this very annoying. When I asked the register guy to give me the money for the tip back to give it to the girl he got very upset and he started going at her. If I ever go there again not tipping a Pennie. read more
