Visiting from NY and decided to give this place a go on my GF recommendations and it was the bomb! She had two bean tacos in a homemade soft shell with just the right amount of filling. I decided on the chicken burrito but this wasn't just an ordinary one...the best I ever had more like it. The five stars are all aimed squarely at the tacos here- truly the best I've ever had. It was a cold and rainy night in 2002 and we were setting up Festival Hall for a ten-day event. One of the gentlemen who helped out at the venue said he was going to run out and grab us some tacos. "Brace yourselves," he said. "You're going to get addicted." He returned with a few white paper plates covered in aluminum foil. They weren't much to look at from the outside but what was inside... oh my god. The. Best. Tacos. Ever. We all begged him for the details on from whence these meaty wonders came but he wouldn't divulge the name of his secret spot. Months later, while working with him on another project, I finally got the answer- La Tapatia. "Don't go there after dark," he cautioned. "Don't expect too much from the interior. I tried the food at La Tapatia for the first time on 4-20-15, based on the review left by Paul V here on yelp. He was not kidding, the food is GOOD (I've only had the al pastor tacos...everyday for the past 3 days). I wasn't too concerned about the neighborhood, it does look sketchy but it seems that people tend to mind their own business and weren't really interested in me or the other customers going in and out. I was surprised that the business opens at 7am-midnight! The employees were kind, service was fast , food hot and fresh. There is a small dining area and I noticed that a lot of people come in to dine during their lunch break. It was kind of crowded today as I placed my order around noon. Excellent food, excellent prices, but the restaurant space is pretty crowded. However, you will not find a better taco place around, especially for the price you pay. Everything is hand made, four tacos about a dollar a piece. Burritos are massive, the tamales are loaded, and the salsa was the right amount of spice. Loved it! Cash only, for whatever reason. This place won me over fast and today it lost me for good. I called in an order and it was apparent that the guy answering the phone screwed up. They took the order again and promised to have my order ready in 10 minutes (4 tacos and rice and beans). 20 mine later, I ask about my order and "oh, I have bad news, I gave it to someone else." Their solution, return my money. Any restaurant offering to send you home without food because they can't get an order out is not worth the trouble - ever. I was looking for awesome, authentic Mexican food after disappointing visits to Los Compadres and Los Taquitos in Kenosha. Sooo glad I stopped at La Tapatia! Yes it's small and the ordering process is a bit odd but the food and service was absolutely wonderful! I had the enchiladas and my dining companion had the steak burrito - top notch stuff. I did not find the area "shady" at all. It's obviously an older area of Racine but not "hood" like some reviewers hinted. This is the only place we will go for tacos! (OK, some days we don't want to drive 30 minutes and go to a different place only to be disappointed!). Small, intimate dining area. Friendly owners. Family run business so you might see mom, dad, daughter, son or even a grandchild. Some days you might find the mayor or chief of police having lunch, other days a bunch of locals. We only dine in as it seems to taste better-the environment is part of the experience. They fry their own taco shells and this is what sets them apart. Oh, their salsa is great, too. Carnitas? I can't find anywhere else around that has the same taste. When I have family that come into town, we make sure LaTapatia's is a stop. While I worked in Racine it would be a weekly trip. I generally order from La Tapatia several times throughout the year. Overall they have average Mexican food. They became a staple in town due to the dirt cheap tacos they once had. The tacos themselves are above average, but the price is about the same as you could expect anywhere else for better quality. Do not dine in this place. It is dirty and in a pretty bad part of town. Also,the staff can be sometimes outright rude. So, trust me, if you go here, call ahead for carry-out and eat elsewhere. read more

Unbelievable! The owner's grandson mentioned his grandparents owned a restaurant. The student graciously shared the restaurant's location. I tried it out that very day. I now know what good Mexican food taste like. Not knowing what to order I had a combination plate. I stole a taste when I jumped in the car. This was our first trip there. I saw them listed on a web site and found some pictures of their food online. We figured we'd check it out because it is pretty close to home. We were not disappointed. The food was outstanding. We ordered the beef taco combo plate, steak chimichanga, nachos, and tamales. Everything was spot on. Not a single complaint. Why can't you find these kind of tacos elsewhere? I'm originally from Racine, but live in California now. However, whenever I come home, I make at least two trips to get tacos, even though most of my trips are only three days. I wish I could clone these. They are that good. So what if the neighborhood is questionable? If you're minding your business, I found, generally, no one will mess with you. It's always amazing how white people will jump to conclusions quickly when in a neighborhood of color, but reality does not support the amount of fear. An overwhelming majority in the area do not have robbing white people on their minds, so get over yourself. Instead, focus on getting the best tacos around. read more

They always go to La Tapatia before they leave Racine again. We've had family visit from various parts of the country and everyone who gets a taste of La Tapatia raves about them. Best deal is the 4 tacos for $4.99. Love the food all of it. My mother who is picky also loved the food. Best services and bonus the owner has Arabian horses as I do also. I've seen some of the reviews and disagree with them. The staff is always friendly and the one time they goofed up my order gave us free chips with guac. La Tapatia appears to be under new management. . My next to last visit I had a milanesa sandwich, it was slow to come out of the kitchen and was so-so at best. My last visit I ordered the roasted pork plate(carnitas), The meat was dried outand nearly inedibleb, the rice and beans cold. I had a upset stomach the next day. The restaurant area appears dirty. I love this place. My only real complaints are they are a bit hit or miss. Sometimes the tacos or burritos are not as good as others. They can be overly greasy with the shells and sometimes the meat is over cooked and dry and sometimes its oily. Inconsistent but when its on, its the best in town. read more
