A solid Mexican establishment in Kenosha, WI. We were in the area and found this place on Yelp. We needed to have dinner on a weekday night. There was a line to pick up the food, must be the spot to grab some Mexican food around. And it definitely was, the food was pretty good and the portions were quite large as well. I really enjoyed my entree, the steak ala Mexicana. I have never had something like this before at a Mexican place but essentially it was small strips of sirloin sautéed all together with some peppers and onions. Great flavor. The salsas they had as well went great with it. The portion was definitely more than enough for 1 person. And I missed out on the tortillas that were supposed to come with it because we never got them. Next time I'm in Kenosha this is on my list again to try more things! read more

Local Mexican fare at great value, excellent house made salsas. We were visiting Kenosha area and needed to grab some quick takeaway. I was impressed with the value on the menu, with some really good options for dinner platters. We ordered six entrees, 3 tacos Al pastor, mixed enchiladas, beef chimichanga, combination platter, steak ala Mexicana, mixed fajita platter. Each of these came with their own refried beans and rice. I loved the beans and rice that could be its own meal right there. The house salsa were excellent. I think there was an orange one that might have contained mango? A Verde was spicy and tart. I placed the order over the phone, told me it'll be about 20 mins. I think it might have taken a little longer actually as I had to wait a bit, and the checkout process was a little tedious as they have to ring you out only after completing the order ticket. It was the middle of dinner service so lots of customers queued up, that I had to wait to get my order and then process payment. All in all a good experience. Their bean burrito with steak is simply amazing, Ive never had a better burrito. I suggust buying two with one in a combo. Try one hot and one cooled down, personally I think its better cool because the meat is so tender that it matches the consistency of the hot beans when hot. My favorite Mexican restaurant in Racine!! We go here all the time! (Since the Racine location closed... sad... we now go to Kenosha) You have to try our usual: Sirloin Tip Burrito, Enchilada Style. The meat is so delicious and just falls apart, and the sauce that comes with it is fantastic. They have the best rice and beans, really good chicken enchiladas, and I don't know what they do to their chips, but they have that unique "Tacos El Rey" flavor and are super addicting. Everything on their menu that we have tried has been really good. We just happen to keep going back for our usual. I like other Mexican restaurants in the area for different reasons, (some for traditional asada tacos, some for Margs and birthday parties, but the food isn't as great) Tacos El Rey has the best quality food, and a chill atmosphere. The family that owns the place is super nice, as is the staff, and we always have an excellent experience there- which is why we keep going back! read more

Food was great years ago. Now it still tastes good but is much smaller than it was and a lot more expensive. New owner (husband of Tonya) down sized everything. Tacos El Ray delivers. It's cheap food. It tastes good. It's pretty fast. I've been here a lot for lunch and it doesn't disappoint... then again, my expectations were low. The food tastes good... thus it becomes a great gathering place for a group of people for lunch. The menu items are essentially a la carte, but it still totals under a few dollars. I got the combination #2 and can't say I enjoyed any of it. You have to ask for Chips if you are dinning in and the place could really use a facelift. The two guys working the counter were just standing there when there was dirty u Bales that they could Have been clearing. They were not busy they menu is rather confusing split in four seperated boards and the overall atmosphere is unwelcoming. When your order is ready they yell your name. There just has to be a better place for Mexican food. The kids menu is a rip off... The quesadilla wasn't even served with rice and beans and one small tortilla cut in half the sign says a kids toy and that we never saw. They don't have MJ for the kids meals...who give their kids pop? I can go on.... Tonight we stopped in for the first time since the change of owners...Wow! I think we just had the greatest tacos I've ever had here and have been a customer since I was a kid! Just had some Asada and El Pastor tacos and those el pastor tacos are the best I believe I've ever tasted! Tasty and spicey marinade and super juicy and cooked perfectly pork...wish I could have had more than two. My family's favorite Mexican restaurant! Love their food. I've been eating here for well over 20+ years. Service is always friendly, food is great. Prices are reasonable. Food was very good at the beginning, not so great towards the end. Not saying the place has bad food, I think I just might have eaten too much. I like the idea of being served at the counter and then going to seat yourself in a booth... I mention this because when you walk in for the first time it seems like you might have to wait to be seated, although this is not so. They also had a salsa bar with jalapeños peppers, which other reviews have raved about, but did not really impress me. I guess it's cool that it's self-service so you can get as much as you want, but three types of salsa and some peppers don't make me giddy like a school girl. Tacos El Rey has to be my favorite restaurant in Kenosha for one simple reason: condiment bar. So the food here may not be authentic or incredible (it certainly isn't true Mexican food), but the single best part about dining in at Tacos El Rey is the salsa bar that greats each customer. There are three different kinds of salsa (I prefer the thin, mild red sauce) that each have a different flavor and heat level along with a bin of fresh pickled jalapenos. It is simply incredible. I have even been known to eat several (okay around 6) jalapenos before my food even comes. There aren't waitresses here, which inevitably helps to keep the prices so low, and you even have to pick up your own silverware on the way to the booth of your choice, but it is worth it. This place feels homey and comfortable and the food is great Mexican-American food. The chimichangas are spectacular and the refried beans with chips are great too. I wouldn't go to Tacos El Rey expecting a fine dining experience, but if you are in the mood for cheap, tasty food in a comfortable atmosphere, look no further. read more

Third time's a charm. I waited until I ate here 3 times to write a review. Every time coworkers and I came here for dine-in, all of our meals come out at various times, which wouldn't be a problem except that there's a 15 minute interval. One guy gets a hot meal, the next guy gets a warm meal, and then I get a warm meal 15 minutes later! They serve food and take dirty trays at the same spot, there's nowhere to leave your dirties except the table. From the tortillas to the rice and yes even the meat, it's all industrially made, not a single authentic meal or side item from what I've tasted. Simply not worth it, La Fey Cafe further south is authentic and MUCH MUCH better! read more

I am only able to keep two-stars based on past happiness. I am actually at another restaurant writing this review since the service was so frustrating I left. Called in an order which included 2 chicken fajita burritos. Arrived 20 minutes later and the girl at the counter informed me they were out of fajitas. (I had already heard them say that they were out of rice to another customer, so I knew they couldn't make my second choice, chicken-chipotle.) I called my wife and got her replacement order and went back to the counter and said I would take a bean and sirloin burrito. I was then informed that they were also out of sirloin. What's going on here-not paying your bills? Just don't like money? This was 6:30 when they close at 9:00. I might Understand at 8:15 or 8:30, but there is no GOOD excuse for being that short on menu staples 2 1/2 hours before close. Hard to imagine myself going back anytime soon, and that's sad because I've been a regular customer for years. read more

The steak tacos (soft shell w/onions and cilantro naturally) were tasty! The steak was cooked well and cut up nicely and there weren't any nasty fatty parts. I didn't care for the rice. I would also say to skip the horchata as it was 2.75 and tiny and mostly tasted like milk. read more

Love this place. Fills me up and I usually have leftovers to take home. I wish I could substitute steak instead of chicken in my flautas though. It still tastes good so it's not really a problem just a preference. The guacamole is delicious and so is their sauces.
