Gotta love the La Vaquita logo and great decorative elements on the window

One never is disappointed at La Vaquita - home to a fabulous array of pan dulce, great menudo, and cafe lechero (the Mexican version of the Café Latte), La Vaquita even has an horchata / agua fresca station inside. Choice range between sit down dining, buffet, and to-go with associated sweet treats to eat that you can grab to-go. Cash and credit cards accepted, and they serve with love and a smile. Definitely one of the top menudo joints in town.

One of the weird things about this place is there's another restaurant with the exact same name and logo up the street, but they are supposedly unaffiliated. There has to be some sort of copyright infringement going on with one of these two spots, but I guess that's The Valley in a nutshell. My parents wanted to take me somewhere I haven't been before, as Toddle Inn is our usual spot. I can't say I was impressed though. The joint was packed but it was also adequately staffed, so I don't quite understand why we waited so long for our (simple) meals. There's a wall devoted to the Panaderia section of the restaurant, and the selections looked pretty good. The chorizo plate was good, though I got a bizarre side of fried tortilla chips instead of, like, papas. The tortillas were delicious, and reminded me of my Grandmother's. Overall, I think places like this are a dime a dozen, so nothing about this place seems all that special to me. I probably wouldn't ask to go back, but I also probably wouldn't say no if invited back out here.

Buffet is also available on weekends.

Excellent restaurant, staff and owner offer superior service and food is excellent. All the dishes are tasteful and pricing is unbeatable. Don't forget the bakery with fresh bread.

From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with warmth and enthusiasm that set the tone for an exceptional evening. Let's talk about the food: the grilled octopus was nothing short of perfection--expertly charred on the outside, tender on the inside, and paired beautifully with fresh, vibrant microgreens. Every bite was a masterclass in balance and flavor, showcasing the kind of culinary skill that can only come from recipes passed down through generations. The authentic Mexican flavors here are deeply rooted in tradition, yet elevated with a modern touch. It's clear the chef-owner has honed their craft under Michelin-starred mentors. That level of expertise comes through in every dish--from the nuanced seasoning to the thoughtful plating. And then there's the drink: La Paloma de Mi Corazón--hands down one of the most refreshing, clean-tasting cocktails I've ever had. Bartender Benito is a true artist behind the bar, blending flavors with precision and passion. He absolutely rocked that drink! The customer service was exceptional throughout. Attentive without being overbearing, every staff member made us feel genuinely cared for. It's rare to find a restaurant where both the front and back of house operate in perfect harmony. Whether you're a local foodie or just passing through, this place is a must-visit. Authentic, elevated, and unforgettable. Can't wait to come back. The most important part is that if you ask for water you will get FIGI water because Brownsville water has contaminants that are EPA approved but in the long run not safe.
