Spent Mother's Day at La Vasca Deli in Miami with the family, and honestly, it felt like being transported straight to Spain. First things first: if you want their Spanish tortilla with chorizo, you have to order it ahead of time. Same-day they usually only have the regular tortilla available, so plan ahead -- and trust me, it's worth it. Thick, soft, perfectly layered potatoes and egg with that extra smoky chorizo flavor that takes it to another level. A true comfort dish done right. Their tortilla is one of their staples for a reason. We also ordered a variety of croquetas: jamón serrano, queso manchego, camarones, and bacalao. Honestly, all of them were good (and I mean all), but the bacalao croquetas? Wow. Next level. Super creamy inside, crispy outside, packed with flavor -- easily my favorite of the table. And because it was Mother's Day, dessert was mandatory. Everyone ordered something different: flan with almond ice cream, crema catalana, Basque-style cheesecake, and I went for the Tarta San Marcos. I'm not Spanish, so it was my first time trying it, and I was pleasantly surprised. It's made with layers of sponge cake, cream, chocolate truffle -- but somehow it doesn't feel too heavy. It paired perfectly with a cafecito and was the ideal ending to the meal. The place is small, cozy, and very authentic. I hadn't been in a while, and you can tell they've organized the space better -- the wine boxes and market area feel cleaner and more intentional, and there's a little more room to breathe. Service was super nice and welcoming. Overall, La Vasca is one of those hidden gems where the food feels as authentic as it gets. A deli that does not live up to its name. No Basques in the deli or restaurant, very little selection of Basque products or menu entrees. I did manage to purchase a pack of txitorra-basque style chorizos. The music played by the in house trio was southern Spain music and not the music of the Basque Country. read more

Hi everyone and I hope you are all doing well. Well we went out with some friends of ours last night to a Spanish restaurant near the Little Havana district of Miami called La Vasca Deli. We had never heard of it until our friends mentioned it as they said they really enjoyed it and were good friends with the owner. Now this restaurant is located in a very unassuming strip mall on SW 8 Street but do not let the location fool you as this restaurant is the real deal. It has deli section with lots of Spanish cheeses and other items; also, has a wonderful selection of Spanish wines. Hard to miss as there are bottles everywhere. The vibe was that of small European type cafe in Spain and Portugal and was very warm and cozy. The owners are especially nice and provided us with some complimentary bread and some home made crab and salmon spreads with Aoli that were awesome. The restaurant is small so reservations are definitely in order if you are thinking on checking them out and I really recommend that you do. What the owners are saving in operational overhead makes it's way to the quality of their food. We all decided to go Tapas style so we could try a little of the more popular dishes and I have to say it was the right approach. No need to worry on portion sizes either as they are excellent and perfect for sharing. From the home made ham and cod croquettes to the traditional lacón con papas, Spanish seafood medley "Mal de Vida" it was all fresh, made to order and delicious. We really had a wonderful time, eating and reminiscing which is what it's all about right? Parking can be a bit of a problem so if you can't find a spot in the strip mall itself, their is public street parking available and you can drive around back to the residential neighborhood and park anywhere you do not see a "No Parking" sign. Make sure you comply or your car will get towed. Overall, we had a wonderful time and we will be going back again and often! This cozy little gem is as good if not better than many of the upscale Spanish restaurants in Miami and for way less money. So if you find yourself in the Little Havana area or are willing to take a drive to taste some awesome Spanish food feel free to check them out. I am positive you will not be disappointed. La Vasca deli was very good. It is important to note that La Vasca is under new ownership as most reviews I read prior to coming here were about how rude the previous owner was. Well, I'm glad to report that this is no longer the case and that the new owners are extremely nice and pleasant. The food itself was also surprisingly good. Fresh ham, chorizo, really good manchego cheese, etc... all was very fresh and very good quality of products. To accompany our meal was very good bread and wine... important players in Spanish cuisine. The selection of wines is very good. Definitely a little bit for everyone's taste and budget. The family style restaurant with only two big picnic tables that is so easy to find in europe and very difficult to find in Miami. Their paella is one of the best I've eaten in the city (only Saturdays thought) they have a small wine cava with great prices and a fine selection. There is a mini market too, so get ready to spend some dollars. Impossible to leave without buying something, their canned seafood is great, ink calamari, olive oil octopus, sardines. I so wanted to love this place. My family and I love traveling in Spain, adore its food, and try to recreate those experiences here in Miami. However, this place has the promise of authenticity but none of the hospitality. When the owner (I assume) came by to take our order, we told her it was our first time there and if she had any recommendations. I couldn't believe her extremely rude and brusque response: "I don't recommend anything because then of you don't like it you'll return it" (In Spanish, of course). I initially inferred she's the ill-humored grandmother type who's a little rude at first but turns out to be a sweetheart. Not the case. She was rude from beginning to end. We had ordered a sandwich to share, an appetizer, two glasses of wine, and two orders of garbanzos. When she brought the garbanzos, we noticed they had morcilla, which we don't eat for religious reasons. We nicely explained, but she just huffed and puffed and never looked after us again. We were never even offered a glass of water. When we got the check, she had charged us for two sandwiches, although we had ordered one to share. We had obviously been brought one sandwich (if that was two, then the sandwiches here are the tiniest I have ever seen for $10.70), but she said it was two, and we chose not to argue with her. We paid and left, convinced we will never return. I would never, ever, ever, recommend this place to anyone. There are many other deserving restaurants in Miami to support. read more

I wanted to like the restaurant just because it's a small family own business and it was recommended by a Spaniard that lives in Miami. I didn't get to the experience the food because they were closing earlier than advertised. (The owner mentioned the hours online we're not set by her and they were wrong) I had called earlier during the day with some questions about the menu and told her I was going to pass by to order at 6:00 PM. She failed to tell me they close at 6:00. She did not even apologize. Her son seemed to be nice and was attending the only table I saw at the "deli". This is more like a deli not a restaurant. And YES the lady is rude. She can't be nice because she doesn't know how to. Where to begin with how much I LOVE this place. First, the food and items they sell are 100% legit Spanish items. Whenever I get homesick, La Vasca is the first place I think of going. The jamón Serrano is delicious, they have my favorite beer from Spain not to mention the cheeses, the wines and all manner of turón, sweets and beans you name it.
