The information below is from their website that I just 'cut & pasted': The little town of Covina was founded in 1886 by Joseph Swift Phillips. A land speculator, Phillips purchased 2,000 acres of land from John Hollenbeck . The area was located just south of the San Gabriel Mountains within the La Puente Rancho. Phillips immediately surveyed the land into 10 acre parcels and planned to sell each parcel for only $650.00. He enticed a couple of newspapermen to settle in town to help advertise and promote land sales. One investor was Daniel Houser from Stockton, California. He brought five sons, and, using money from the sale of his invention of the Combined Harvester, eventually brought water to the town. Water enticed more people to settle on the fertile land. Businesses sprouted up along Citrus Avenue and Covina was incorporated in 1901. At one time, it served as the agricultural hub of the San Gabriel Valley, producing and shipping more oranges than anywhere else on earth. The Covina Valley Historical Society was organized in 1969 to preserve and promote the history of our community. We own and operate two distinctly unique historic venues; The Firehouse Jail Museum and the Heritage House. The Firehouse Jail Museum, erected in 1911, is located directly behind City Hall just east of Citrus Avenue. This exciting museum contains one of the most complete collections of orange industry documents and artifacts in southern California. Hundreds of school children visit this unusual museum each year. We are open every Sunday (excluding holidays) from 1pm-3pm. Admission is free. The Heritage House is located adjacent to Covina Park at 300 N Valencia Avenue. The territory is incredibly well maintained, with huge mature trees, beautiful flowers, fountains, mini waterfalls, and small ponds where you can see fish and turtles. There is also a lovely grassy area in the center where you can sit, relax, or have a small picnic. Geese walk freely around the gardens, and colorful parrots fly overhead, adding even more charm to the atmosphere. In April, the garden looks especially stunning -- the pergola and trees are in full bloom (I wish I remembered the names of those gorgeous flowers!), and the whole place feels alive and magical. Honestly, this garden is beautiful in any season of the year. You can come here with dogs, which is a big plus, but it's important to respect the property rules: pets must be on a leash, owners are responsible for cleanup, professional photography requires a permit, and activities like skateboarding, drinking alcohol, or organized sports events are not allowed. These rules help preserve the calm and cleanliness of the space. There is also a secondary school located on the property, which adds to the unique character of the place. Parking-wise, we were able to find free street parking nearby without any issues. This is a perfect spot to slow down, enjoy nature, and escape the city noise for a while. Their VIP parking was down a one-way dirt road at the entrance, but we opted for general parking across the street at the Heritage Square metro station. Part of the event was touring the Victorian houses, which was pretty interesting to see. Each house had guides to give insight into how people lived in the olden times. We also got to check out the giftshop for Heritage Square Museum which had souvenirs and mementos if you wanted to support them. Street Food Cinema hosted a special outdoor screening of Sinners. There were two screening areas so don't worry if you can't find a spot at the first one - juts walk aways further and you'll find more seats for the other screen (the movie plays simultaneously on both). Fyi - you don't need to bring your own chairs as they provide lawn chairs for screenings. There's several specialty things to see so it's worth coming early so you can take it all in. There was a Spookeasy with a musician playing songs from the movie, an Oddities Bazaar that offered tarot readings and aura photography, vendors selling goodies/clothes/etc, and of course plenty of food! We had delicious pizza from Angeleno's Wood Fired Pizza, had some cookies from Brady's Bakery, and topped it off with hella strong drinks! It was a 21+ event and they sure had heavy pours! Of course if you don't drink they also offered water, soda, and mocktails. If you get the opportunity to attend an event at Heritage Square Museum, don't miss out on it! The grounds are well-maintained, the employees are all informative and friendly, and we had an absolute blast! Two more things to know before you go - (1) it gets seriously cold at night, so bring a blanket and bundle up. Pro tip: it also comes in handy to secure your seat while you walk around. (2) Outside is mostly dirt and it gets windy, so dress accordingly and be sure to blow your nose thoroughly afterwards because you're going to be breathing it in!

It's actually pretty interesting to walk through and see a piece of Los Angeles history preserved like that. I'd say it's especially worth visiting if the event or entry is free, since it's a nice way to experience something different without committing a full day to it. The staff were extremely friendly and very enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge, which honestly made the experience better. You can tell they care about the history and enjoy talking about it. Some of the homes did have a noticeable old house smell, which isn't shocking given their age, but it's something you'll probably notice as you walk through. Overall, it was a cool and unexpected experience and a nice reminder that LA has pockets of history hiding in plain sight.

Odd place, but worth it for people looking to explore new photo spots. It's just a very small section outside. Egyptian hieroglyphics and feeling like you are someplace abroad for a moment. This is just one odd building in a rare spot. Maybe the developer didn't get funding during and after pandemic to build something else here or expand from the idea. It's unique. There were contractors working inside/maintenance work. Nothing to see other than exterior of building. Good photo spot. No worries, your registration fee comes with transporation to and from. Next scavenger hunt is 6/24 @ the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. And the BEST part is, its not limited to only El Monte residents, anyone can join! It brings you back to an era when, according to a story our docent told us, the couple living here would signal to their daughter living in downtown LA... that they needed help, by hanging a white sheet in the tree on their backyard! Before phones before internet before anything I can even imagine. It's a cool place, leaving you imagining what life was like in early colonizer times in LA.
