We had a very disappointing experience with our reservation at La Vie through OpenTable for the Valentine's Day prix fixe menu. At the time of booking, we were charged a prepaid amount of over $190. However, when we dined at the restaurant, the final bill did not deduct this prepaid amount, and we were charged the full price again. After realizing this, we contacted the restaurant. We were told to send an email explaining the situation, which we did two weeks ago, followed by another email one week ago. To date, we have received no response at all. This is extremely frustrating. Not only were we effectively double charged, but the complete lack of follow-up or customer service is unacceptable. We expected much better from a restaurant of this caliber. At the very least, communication and basic billing accuracy should be handled properly. read more

Worst$145 tomahawk steak I had, was tough to chew and not tasty. I had a tomahawk recently at American Prime and that was an excellent steak and La Vié's just not worth it. It was disappointing in a wat that they don't seem to care about its reputation- granted la vie is not known for their steak but if you have it on your menu and at $145 a pop, you better have it, at least, to taste right or cook right. It was as if it wasn't a tomahawk, just a slab of very tough steak and a charred bone next to it to give it appearance of a tomahawk steak. We expected pricey drinks but still, after an almost $400 bill for 3, with no appetizer nor dessert, and at $145, that steak is not worth it! Sides are $17 each and their truffle fries were not good, almost off putting there's an after taste and dried our mouths even despite our drinks and water. It was off! If I had to describe this restaurant in one word it would be "overrated". This was my first trying this place as my friends suggested it for galentines day celebration. It was a Saturday night and I was quite excited to give it a go. Upon arrival a doorman lets you into an elevator and the restaurant is on a certain number floor and 3/4 or something like that. Anyway- the walk through is instagram worthy and you can get beautiful pictures.... Sadly that is all it has to offer. We were only seated once the entire party was present and was not offered to buy drinks at the bar or anything like that. You just stand in a waiting area feeling awkward as waiters with ear pieces looking super important walk past you. I thought " am I in a movie?" Anyway, after I realized there is no James Bond in the house we were seated. They have a wide variety of over priced drinks and because I don't drink alcohol I opted for a non alcoholic beverage but I swear for that price they should just give you the alcohol for free. Must be because of the high price on strawberries. Our waiter was very matter of fact and honestly treated us like he would rather be at home watching Netflix than serving us. Anyway I opted for burger ( no bacon) and we ordered a few sharing items like the hummus and the kofta. The food came out pretty quickly and while we were still chewing the appetizers they came out with the mains and practically took our food away. The burger - it was ok. Nothing to write home about. I am not sure what the other ladies ordered but I can tell you this much - not one of them finished their meal and not one of them wanted to take leftovers.... Hmmm. I asked the waiter if they served decaf coffee and he said no to me very aggressively like I insulted him. I was just so taken back I just said um yeah ok fine thank you bye. I won't even talk about dessert because it was really bleh too. The bill came as soon as we started eating dessert and let me just tell everyone- they charge an auto 20 percent tip. So don't add another tip. We almost got duped- although if I could ask that very rude waiter to rather pay me to endure his service it would be more than 20 percent. I recently celebrated my birthday at La Vie and rented one of their igloos for about $240. I was disappointed that the party in front of us was running over, which resulted in my party having to wait almost an hour after my reservation to be seated. It seems as though they need to allot more time in between reservations so they don't overlap. I am, however, appreciative of the effort they put in to try to remedy the situation. Overall, the igloo was beautiful! I loved the ambiance and the speaker was a nice touch. However, connecting to the speaker was frustrating as the names were all the same and there was no way to indicate which one you were connecting to. As for the food, everything was tasty. I really enjoyed the banana pancakes, but the spanakopita was tiny for the price. I also did not realize the penthouse menu was more limited than the regular brunch menu and as a pescatarian I did not find the options were inclusive enough. My vegan friend opted to eat dairy because the menu was lacking. I also am taking off a star because my potatoes arrived cold. Lastly, I wish Shay was a little quicker with the champagne as we paid for a bottomless experience, but overall she was a friendly server. Me and my bestie came here after enjoying our "Friendsgiving" at the Penthouse on La Vie. We only sat at the bar and enjoyed some mocktails, but the decor and ambiance are definitely a romantic, fun, and colorful vibe. Truly Perfect for party planning and hosting.. Unfortunately, per the bartender, most cocktails are already pre-made, so modifying them to a mocktail version is not offered. Yes, they're warm, there's also heaters inside of them. They provide speakers so you can play music. We did the winter wonderland igloo theme. Tables are fairly small but there's a few. It can fit up to 6-7 persons comfortably. Pricing - The brunch went from $56 to $65 per person and the only thing different is the little carving station area. The changed some menu items but for the most part same concept and not worth a $10 increase. There's a 20% gratuity tacked onto all bills so be aware of that. The igloos are $99 deposit plus an additional deposit amount of $100 that goes towards your bill for 2 hours. Having a deposit amount and a rental fee that high is ridiculous and a scam in my personal opinion. Although it's cute and fun I don't think it's worth paying that much! Just to have your cake cut is $70 for groups larger than 8 or $7 per person.... That's almost as much as cutting the cake. Let's be for real, just to cut a cake to charge that much is insanity. Excellent food, professional service, things like a three Michelin Star restaurant and also walking distance if you're staying near the Spy Museum. Hard to park though so walk or Uber. I'm gluten free and they're attentive to my dietary needs and make helpful suggestions according to my diet. This time I was dining at La Vie on a business trip with a large group. We had shared dishes including the crispy brussel sprouts, mushroom risotto, branzino, chicken thighs, and roasted potatoes. We also had the hummus, tzatziki, and salad as starters. The risotto was undercooked and the chicken & potatoes were a bit dry. The fish and brussel sprouts were perfect! The restaurant is quite beautiful and very spacious. Now La Vie is what I consider a luxury brunch. From the staff to the decor to the food to the views this is probably one of the best brunches in DC. La Vie has been on my list for a while so I was happy I finally had a chance to visit. The staff was so friendly and made it a fun experience. We had a large party so they brought all of the options out. When I say we tried it all we tried it all and it was all good! I didn't have anything that I wasn't a fan of. I will say that the French Toast was the star of the show for sure. It was the best French Toast I've ever had it was just melting in our mouths! The decor was BEAUTIFUL!! When you come inside the building where this is located you are greeted by the elevator door by a concierge person who will tell you which floor it is located on. After exiting the elevator is you have reservations you will be shown to your table. As I was by myself I was told I could go inside the other side of the restaurant where there were velvet green chairs at the bar. The decorations here are very pretty and above the bar there is flowing water from I'm guessing an outside fountain that brings a soothing touch to the atmosphere. It was happy hour but DC happy hour prices which we all know not that cheap. So I did end up getting rice ball appetizer that was so delicious and a couple of drinks that were ok. Now I wanted pasta and the seafood tagliatelle sounded and looked so good minus the cuttlefish so I ordered it. Now the price was over $50 which was kind of ridiculous, but I ended up getting it anyways. It did come with some nicely toasted buttered bread. The sis was pretty good just very very greasy! I did love that it had a great presentation and enough shrimp to satisfy me, but I wish they would have added more clams and maybe without the shell. Because that took up much of the dish and unable part. Will I come back...probably not because the pricing was too high. My fiance was suppose to find the place I had a frose at after a concert nearby and I booked a reservation here thinking it was the same place. To my pleasure, it wasn't! Dined at La Vie on a Tuesday evening with a friend. We opted for outdoor seating though, because of the table placement, I was in direct sunlight for a while. We asked to be moved but the server basically encouraged us to stay because the sun would move as it set. Oh the server...he's the reason for this 3 star review. Really, it should be 1 star, but I'm trying to be nice. He fancies himself a comedian or, perhaps, he is a comedian in addition to working at the restaurant. If he put half as much effort into recommending menu items or providing our bill in a timely manner (he never did this at all, by the way. He disappeared without explanation and we eventually flagged someone else down so we could pay and leave) then perhaps there would be a redeemable quality. But no, he spent abundant time trying to be funny and not knowing when enough was enough. To be really fair, my friend was egging him on but that's still no excuse for whatever ounce of professionalism he has (if any?) to have gone by the wayside. I'll remember the Arancini as the standout menu item. The Halloumi Frites were disappointing. The Harissa shrimp was fine but not special, and the same goes for the Greek salad. The menu is Mediterranean and lots of focus on seafood.we enjoyed the trio of Mediterranean spreads with a pile of warm toasted pita triangles sprinkled with za'atar. I enjoyed a Purple Blossom cocktail with blue butterfly gin and Prosecco. I ordered truffle shrimp on a flaky pillow puff pastry with hen of the woods mushrooms in a creamy bechamel. My companion selected tender pan roasted scallops with couscous. The food quality and service were both excellent. We passed on dessert although we saw several tables order the cotton candy baked Alaska ($39 serves 2-5) which was a gigantic blue fluff that was set alight. One thing to note: there is a 20 percent service fee and 4 percent credit processing fee Automatically added to every bill (we were only a party of 3). I usually tip generously and almost added another 20 percent before I noticed the service fee. I wasn't aware but these are listed on the bottom of the menu. The steak was a bit chewy but I suppose it's the meat they use. I wish they'd offer an upgrade to a filet. I'd pay. Banana Pancakes tasted like alcohol, would have preferred it without that flavor. Mac and cheese was okay, needed more flavor. Salt and Pepper, maybe a sprinkle of a southern ancestor touch. Chicken and waffle was below average. They use dark meat and it was dry. They should def consider the typical breast. This was my least favorite. The price is average for the Wharf. There is an up charge to cover costs for tip, and other explained items so expect to pay at minimum $100 for one person. We were a table of two and the bill came out to $240 The table was not ready when I got there even with a reservation but they were extremely busy. Overall, it was fun and an excellent experience. If you are a solid brunch in the wharf area check out La Vie. They have two floors. On the 4th floor they offer an all you can eat brunch. And on the penthouse floor they save an a la carte brunch. There were 6 people in our party and the bill was almost $1000. We spent $516 (before tax, tip and fees) on the food ONLY and left hungry. I don't think I'll ever go back or recommend this place to anyone. Everything is very overpriced! The branzino was delicious and my favorite dish. Everything else was mediocre. DON'T ORDER THE CAVIAR & POTATO! It's not worth $85. You can't even taste the caviar. The crudo was too cured and didn't taste refreshing. Our server (forgot their names) were attentive and friendly.
