There are no dump stations or amenities, but when you come prepared you don't need that. Definitely come prepared because the nearest store is Alamosa. We absolutely would come back and stay here!

This campground is about 9 miles from the Great Sand Dunes national park. You'll have views of the…read moredunes from up there. To get here from the main road will take about 15mins/3.5miles uphill. Camp sites are first come first serve. We arrived during sunset at around 6pm on Labor Day weekend and was able to secure the last spot. Get there early for awesome sites with amazing views. The one we stayed at did not have views but we were able to stargaze as the location is pretty dark. This is walking distance to the Zapata Falls trailhead so expect a lot of people arriving to hike by early morning.

Rustic? That's a stretch... but I loved it anyway…read more Had a great time at Dakota Hot Springs, but when they say "rustic," that might be giving it a little too much credit. Think more "DIY charm with deferred maintenance." Only one of the two showers in the men's bathroom worked, and the outdoor shower looked like it had retired early. The shade cloth overhead was thin, ripped, and flapping in the wind like it was waving a white flag. That said, the water itself? Perfect. The big pool stayed at a great temp, and if you wander into the "lobster pot," prepare to boil yourself like you're on the menu--it's hot hot. Lots of room to spread out and catch sun, which was a big plus. Now, the real warning: dusk. When the sun dips, the mosquitoes come out like they've been fasting for weeks. I heard it's thanks to the stagnant dump water nearby, and they make sure you know they're there. Pro tip: bring bug spray or plan your exit before happy hour for the skeeters. All in all--quirks, flapping tarps, and dive-bombing mosquitoes included--I'll definitely be back. Just don't come expecting "spa chic." This is a hot springs with character (and a sense of humor).

Yet, getting into & out of the truck was treacherous due to the drop offs on the sides. The tall, unmowed grass was deceiving & falling down hill was a real concern. They locked hot tub, the guest had to request them to unlock it -- feels creepy. Admittedly, I had to change my reservation due to grandbaby's early arrival & I made a mistake. However, I caught it, called them, rather than adding the extra days to current reservation--they made a new one. When I arrived, I pointed this out. Yet, I had to check out & recheck back in. I didn't have to move camping sites -- so that was a plus. We've stayed at many KOAs this one seems to have no pride of ownership. Honestly, for a Holiday KOA we were not thrilled, & would not recommend.

The sites were level, paved, and easy to access, with some trees offering a bit of shade and privacy. The hookups were easy to get to, which made setup quick and simple. The staff was super friendly and welcoming -- they even escorted us to our site and let us know their hours in case we needed anything. It's a peaceful, well-run KOA that made for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Highly recommend this location!

One of the proprietors actually towed my car for me, to the campground, and helped me start it the next morning. You know how sometimes in the mountains, two of the "ridges" in the mountains will come together to form a little valley-like spot in the heights? That's where Pine Lodge is. The cabins are warm, even in deep snow, and well appointed with leather sofas, stoves, sinks, bathrooms and beds, the lake brims with trout, and the proprietors are helpful and neighborly beyond any of my expectations. P.S. Do not underestimate "mountain gazing" as an activity. Seriously.

Being in and out, mostly…read moreout of the cabin, during the 2 day stay, it wasn't until the second day I realized how much dirt was on the floor. Grabbing the broom I swept the whole cabin and came up with a considerable pile which I had to sweep in the corner because there was no dust pan. Then I found food and crumbs in t]he refrigerator and the kitchen sink wasn't very clean. Worst of all, at that point when I realized the cabin hadn't been cleaned between customers, I began to doubt the bedding had even been changed as the bottom sheet found sort of sandy. I did write to the proprietors to give them a chance to at least respond to me, but nothing. Too bad, as it was fun staying at this small mountain area - at least until this happened.

Great Sand Dunes National Park is otherworldly and honestly one of the most unique landscapes to be…read moreexperiences in North America. It's a bit of a smaller park in terms of trails and not going to be like RMNP so make sure you know what you're getting into. We planned our trip for May when the creek is usually flowing and the dunes are optimal for sledding. Unfortunately for us we hit a patch of bad weather and it was drizzling our whole day spent here. Additionally the park is experiencing a dry spell and the creek that is usually flowing in May was still dry. C'est la vie! We still had a blast climbing the dunes, letting the kids play in the sand, and taking in the views. To be honest the views are the best part - it's incredible to see these dunes and learn more about the history of the landscape in this region of Colorado. We didn't get to sled as the conditions were not ideal for it but we plan on someday returning and doing the full experience. If you're on the fence about coming here it's well worth a visit!

We…read morecame over Memorial Day weekend and we had been hearing rumblings in town that this is typically one of their busiest seasons of the year so we were really nervous we would have to wait in long lines, it would be crowded, and we wouldn't be able to enjoy our hike up the sand dunes. It was actually totally chill, it took maybe 15 minutes to get situated and pay for our park pass, drive to the dunes, and find parking but nothing outrageous. I will say the park rangers here are not friendly and fairly rude if I'm being honest. The dunes themselves were super fun, we had never been to anything with this much sand before so it was a blast sledding down the hills! All of the visitors were really nice and friendly to one another which is always great to see. We specifically rented a 4x4 jeep so we could go on the Medano Pass Primitive Road and probably only made it about 5 miles. THIS was actually crowded and unruly as it's one lane and you have to park on the side every now and then to let cars from the opposite direction come through. It was bumpy, not scenic at all, and rather annoying having to stop so frequently so we ended up ditching it and leaving to go to the visitor center instead. If I were to redo this part, I would have just rented a cheaper car that wasn't a 4x4 and saved loads of gas. Because the park is open 24/7, we were especially excited to come back at night though and see the dunes. We returned around 10:30pm and although there were some really annoying people blasting music in the dunes parking lot that ruined the ambiance, the stars were absolutely magnificent. Since it's a certified International Dark Sky Park,they were absolutely stunning and radiating from the night sky. We got so lucky it was a clear night so we could see them so well! That was the highlight of our trip for sure.
